~ The Eddie Is On ~

by Tina~in_ut

I received an email from Kgrl on Tuesday......The Eddie is on! She sent me a link so I could watch it live. I was mesmerized all day long. I had it in the background on my computer at work and showed everyone who walked by. I couldn't wait for my kids to get home from school so they could watch, too. It was still on when I got home from work and the family was watching.

"The Eddie", officially called The Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau, is held at Waimea Bay, Hawaii. In its 25 year history, this surfing competition, which is by invitation only, has only actually been completed 8 times. The event is only held if waves reach a height of at least 20 feet sometime between Dec 1st and Feb 28th. Tuesday, Dec 8th, the waves consistently reached 35 to 40 feet, with some as high as 50 feet. It was an awesome spectacle. One participant's surfboard broke in half when he wiped out. Another competitor came charging through the white foam even after I was sure he had wiped out. When all was said and done, Greg Long won by a margin of 10 points.

"The Eddie" got its nickname from the very first lifeguard at Waimea Bay, Eddie Aikau. Eddie was regarded as one of the best big-wave riders in the area. The phrase "Eddie would go!" refers to his willingness to take on huge waves that others would not brave and his courage to make a rescue in impossible situations. Not one life was lost in the time that he was a lifeguard. On March 16, 1978, Eddie set out on a 2,500 mile trek from Hawaii to Tahiti in a double-hulled sailing canoe as part of the crew. The canoe developed a leak in one of its hulls and capsized about 12 miles south of Molokai. Eddie paddled toward Lanai on his surfboard in an effort to save the crew. Hours later, a commercial plane spotted the crew and the Coast Guard was sent to rescue them. Eddie, though,
despite rescue efforts, was never seen again and lost at sea at the age of 31. Six years later, Eddie's memory would live on as the first surfing contest in his honor took place. His brother, Clyde, won the contest in 1987.

When my daughter and I went to Hawaii in October, we spent time with Kgrl at Waimea Bay. The waves were just a tad rougher than when we had been there in July a year before. We had to go out a little further so as not to be pounded by the waves. Here is a picture Kgrl took that day:

....here's a picture from July 2008.....

....and here is a picture from Tuesday....

Can anyone see a difference? The Eddie Is On.........

Tina your a Ho! Getting first on your own blog is just so Unclassy! LOL

Yes Deedee I think you are prettier! LOL You guys crack me up!

Great blog and I just learned a little history about surfing. Never thought I needed to but that was interesting and informative! Thank you Kgirl and Tina.

Tho I do think they are crazy to surf in waves that high. But I don't understand extreme sports enthusiasts (sp) either?

Actually the fact that I take on batshit crazy volunteers daily maybe I am up for extreme sports. Hmmmmm Might be easier.

  4. Mo I am saying prayers and sending good thoughts! (((Hugs)))

Carol not many lights up in our area so far this season either. Really did not notice until I watched your vid. Oh and I had to laugh at 37 degrees it has not been above thirty degrees here all week. We are having a heat wave this morning as it is 7 degrees on my porch instead of 4. Wohoo! I will have to dig out my light weight long johns this morning.

Off to tend my farms and cafe as I have to head out later to work our bazaar today. Raising money for the kids whose names do not get taken from our giving trees.

    Have a great day everyone!

Goldie wish I was with you and your grandkids this weekend. I do love to go sledding! The one winter sport that I enjoy doing. We used big intertubes when the kids where little.

  6. Good Morning!

Yeah I watched that link thinking it was a video and I kept thinking whens this sumbitch gonna end!!! Then I realized it was a live feed from Hawaii and I watched intently because the waves were supposed to top 50 feet on Tuesday I think....

I have been thinking about sponsoring my own surfing competition in Galveston...the only difference is we will chum the water first and the surfing competitors will have to wear a large Carmen Miranda like fruit headdress....do finger snaps to the elbow and cheek while singing
    "Chica Chica Boom Chic"......AND surf...

Ya think I could draw a crowd??

  16. Wow, those waves and surfing look so much fun...if I was young and not scared. They were showing this on our news the other night too. TINA, next time you go for a visit....pictures needed of you on your surfboard..oh yea, I don't think you look very pretty at all. You hat is crooked too, j/s/

CAROL; FROM AREA 51...I also had to smile when you were telling your temps and we were at -17 and on our fourth snow storm of the season (first one being in Sept~). We have lights around our streets and buildings a lot. We will take the list from the paper and go and look at some of the houses. I love Christmas lights, etc. My shopping is almost done. I bought two WII's for the kids (family gifts). Target had a good deal that you got a $25 gift cert with the WII and since I was buying two..... Well, on Sunday Walmart had the ad that you gt a $50 gift cert. Target would not honor it so I took those back and got them at Walmart. Again, when you are buying two that is a big help to pu towards the second remote I needed for each of them. I watch sales but am not a wanderer shopper either.

MO: Sending good thoughts out to you and Happy Hanukkah to you today.

DEEDEE: With all do respect, you look like you bought your hat at the same store TINA did and you both look a little lop-sided. I think maybe an Oprah makeover might be on the Xmas list for both of you...remember, this is only something a friend would be able to tell you both.

NN, I will be off to read your blog next. Hello to you,TINA, DEEDEE, ZONA, LYNN, BEAR, ZONA AND CAROL.

I only slept for two hours and have no idea why and I have plans today so no nap for me. I made a to-do list before bed and then couldn't stop thinking about it in bed.

Have a good day and see ya' all later.

  21. Hello Owls. I have been home from Christmas Promise for almost 2 hours and I haven't done a thing except eat. I had breakfast and then nothing until after 6pm. I've been eating for almost two hours. I might have a glass (or bottle) of wine next.

Tina, I saw waves this high one year when I was in Maui in Jan//Feb. It was really exciting, but no one was surfing. I can't imagine how exciting that would be. Thanks to you and Kgrl for the interesting history about the Eddie.

Tina, thanks also for the kind words in A51.

  22. Good evening everyone, and Tina! First again on your own blog I see.
    Tsk!Tsk!

I assume everyone is out partying and merry making...except Mary who is home with her vibrating phone and does not want to be disturbed.

  23. Tina I can't see the video, but I did check it out the other day when it was live. I saw K-girl mention it on FB. It would be so awesomw to see waves like that in person. Thanks for for telling us the history.

  24. Lynn, I'm so sorry you have to work with batshit crazy volunteers. The ones I work with are so nice and easy to work with. Of course, I'm not in charge, so my expectations are low.

The firemen were in again to wrap gifts and they are always a LOT of fun. They talk about their long hoses and stuff. I love it.

  25. Mo, praying, sending good thoughts and crossing everything I can cross for you.(((HUGS))) ♥♥♥

  26. Hi SacBarb! Why did you not eat all day? You must have had time for a sandwich. Have a glass of wine for me! Is it red or white or both!?

    ReplyDelete
  27. Zona, You mean you aren't going to try an extreme sport. What do you call sock sliding?

    ReplyDelete
  28. Talk is cheap SacBarb! I want to know if they showed you how their hoses worked!!

  29. Hi Shirley, I was working at Christmas Promise and we were so busy there was no time to eat. Usually they have snacks there, but not today. I did have a cup of hot apple cider, tho. I'm drinking red tonight, tho I prefer white, but it's all I have. I'll be happy to have a glass for you.

    How's your Mum doing?

    ReplyDelete
  30. Shirley, That's what I said and no there was no show and tell. :(

    ReplyDelete
  31. SacBarb I prefer red to white, so that will do just fine, thanks!

Mum is doing ok. Some days are better than other, but that is to be expected. Thanks for asking.

  32. Carol you never commented on the dress code I mentioned for the party. I wanted to know if you agreed to it or not so I could go buy mine. To refresh your memory I thought the dress code for our party should be black tie ONLY. What do you think?

    ReplyDelete
  33. It's 1:00 am here in NS so it's time I went to bed.
    Good night everyone, and Tina!

  37. Ho, Ho, Ho, Tina Congrats on ignoring the bylaws and being first today. I really enjoyed the vid and blog. We've been hearing about it on the news here as the surfers converged on Hawaii instead of coming here to Mavericks, as the waves would have been a little bit smaller by the time they got here. Mavericks is right over the mountain, about 15-20 minutes south from me. It's amazing how they put the word out, and surfers arrive from all over the world within 24-48 hrs for the surf contest.

Shirley Are you suggesting we wear black ties and nothing else at our party? Won't we be cold?
