It can happen, anywhere

There is to much on my mind, can't concentrate on words. All that keeps popping in my head right now, is what is going on in the news I guess because I just watched it. What did get my attention on the news was a incident that was to occur today at a high school in Bridgewater NJ which is about 1hr from where I live. Two kids were planning a copycat of Columbine. I learned today that a student, a female, did the right thing and told someone about what she knew.

From NJ News:

"We are justifiably proud of the source within our student body that came forward and of the staff members who passed the information along to the administration in such a timely manner," Riccobono said yesterday of the girl who tipped authorities. "We hope that this whole scenario can serve as a model for future incidents, whether here or at other schools."

In the home of one of the accused they found:

"The suspect, whom police have also not identified, was arrested Friday after authorities said they found an arsenal of explosives, bomb-making plans and ammunition in his Bridgewater home. The teen has been charged with attempted murder, possession of explosives, possession of a destructive device and attempted widespread damage or injury."

I'll tell ya, that is just so scary. What are these kids thinking, and why would death to innocent students, faculty etc, be so enticing? How would doing this deed serve their purpose. It is so baffling to me.

Bridgewater is normally a very quiet town and not know for violence of any kind, it is somewhat of a upscale town. Most people move there to get away from violence and give their kids a good education. It is predominantly of the Caucasian race.

What makes this almost unbelievable is that when you sit and think, it truly can happen anywhere, there are no boundaries. I am just very glad that girl came forward, as she saved many lives, today would have been much different if she did not.

Really frighting and sad....

  2. Oh Carol that is frightening! Words can't cover how proud I am of the girl who stepped forward and prevented a tragedy.

I don't understand this mind set either. Tho in some ways the media and films somewhat glorify these actions as they fall all over themselves trying to get ratings covering it.

I believe there is a movie out right now that has a man out seeking justice by blowing up and killing people because he thinks the system failed him. I can't watch it. People have said it is really good. I think to myself even if it is just a movie isn't that glorifying a vigilante mind set? How cool to get justice your own way in essence.

The world seems upside down right now. Or maybe I am just paying attention more, don't know which.

  4. Carol~ That's so frightening and unreal! My daughter told me of a similar plan at a local high school. It spread on facebook to stay home from school that day and the swat team was called in. Nothing happened, thank God....but it's so scary that it could~

  6. Congratulations to Lynn, #1 Hooter… thinking maybe Tina ought to save a seat at the Hovention for Lynn.

I’m so glad that child was smart and brave enough to come forward.

So true that it can happen anywhere. Lane 2 came home with a story about a girl who had a hit list last year in middle school. I called the principal who took it very seriously, pulled the 11 yr. old girl out of class and found the list in her notebook. She had “been bullied and wanted to pay them back.” In this small town, where everyone is a hunter, most homes have guns. No doubt she could have paid them all back.

Since the topic is heavy today, here goes what I didn’t want to post yesterday, my uncle lost his battle with cancer, for which I should be thankful he is no longer suffering, but I’m selfish and wanted to keep him here forever.

Next day, one of the kids’ friends/classmates committed suicide. (shot himself with his father’s gun) His services were unbearable. Me, a writer, not having words to offer his parents, felt terrible, still does.

Had a houseful of kids the night it happened. I’m not a counselor, but have dealt with my sister’s suicide and my brother in laws a few months ago. It all floated back and then to see all the kids so sad, confused, devastated, how do you explain the unexplainable? I hope just being together helped them cope.

To all of you who suffer from illness, or have a loved one who is sick, I send my prayers good vibes and love. What we learn from these terrible experiences is to just love one an other, and let the people we really care about know how much they mean to us, because no one ever knows if the chance to say it will be there tomorrow.

Owls, I love all of you…even you Tina. xoxo

On a much lighter note, thanks for feeling my pain yesterday about the crow…you whores! LOL! Okay, so maybe that story needs to be a blog post at Home Fires since all of you seemed to get so much pleasure from my pain!!!

  8. Good Morning Hooters!

    congrats on 1st Lynn.

Very scary Carol- and all too often people keep quiet. Good for that girl- how proud EVERYONE should be of her!

Lois- So sorry about your loss and that of your childs classmate. How very sad- they are lucky you were there for them. ((Hugs)

Waving a tired wing at everyone- the inmates are taking over the asylum!!

  9. Now that I have that out of the way lol!
My cute young plumber is here, under my,,,,sink! Dam, when I really would like to see me some "plumber's crack,
he has his shirt tucked in lol!!

Carol, your blog gave me goose bumps!
It is hard to understand what is in the minds of these kids. Thank goodness for the person who took them serious enough to contact the right people. I too think there is way to much glorification on such stuff. I wouldn't publish their pics for sure.

Have a great day everyone, and the same to the lurkers :):):)

  10. Goldie honey, has anyone told you it's winter? Where are your woollies?

  11. Carol and Lois: Your posts and comments raise an awfully important point!

Which is, I wonder, sometimes, if humankind will be able to make it out of our collective adolescence. What's happening at the individual level today is mirroring what happened at the government level back in WWII: Modern science and engineering knowledge have given us a civilization that our ancestors couldn't have dreamed of. With the knowledge, unfortunately, has come widespread access to weapons of both individual and mass destruction.

As we found in Hiroshima, and now in schools and elsewhere across the world, there are few limits nowadays to the destruction that we can inflict on ourselves. We are going to have to find ways of getting people to choose not to do so; to give them reasons to hope instead of to despair.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Lois I am so sorry for the many losses you have been facing, again I just don't know what to say. (((Hugs)))

Everyone needs to hug someone today, just for the reassurance of another human being making contact and acknowledging each other. inmho

  15. Good Morning Lynn, congrats on being first, Tina, Lois, Mary, Goldie and Whabbear.

Carol, I hope we never have to go through another day like Columbine. That was such a horror and could happen again at any time. It really scares me too. I only pray that the example of this girl will spread. I think quite a few incidents have been stopped in the last few years thanks to teenagers with a good set of morals.

Lois - So sorry for your loss, (((Hugs))))

I am rushing this morning with more things to do than I can handle. Today my mother would have turned 98 so my number one priority is to get to the graveyard. My kitchen is full of wreaths, Christmas trees
and flowers ready to decorate the graves of my mom, dad, my sister and Jack's mom and dad. I hope they will see them from Heaven.

Have a safe and happy day everyone. Love, Tinka

  19. Two little boys in my GD's classes (4th and 5th grade) got expelled from school last week for the rest of the year for making a video about blowing up another child in the school and put it on youtube. The Principal came to each class and talked to the kids and of course they all ran home and tried to pull it up on yourtube because she didn't tell them what it was about or who was in it. Word got around quick. These are two little boys that my GD;s have been in school with since kindergarten. Very scary.

Things are pretty quiet on the blog today Guess we are all trying to do our Christmas things. Guess what I did today? I went back to the dentist because the first root canal (done in June) is still hurting. He is sending me back to the root canal specialist but I am going to wait until after the holidays...it doesn't hurt that bad. He gave me an anti-biotic and vicodine (sp) guess he must have thought it really hurts.

I (like of of your)have so much to do. My office is a total mess with presents and crap everywhere. I tell myself every day that I am going to work on it but then I don't.

Anyone watch the Jennifer Hudson Christmas special last night? It was pretty good and I thought better than Carrie Underwood one because this was at least all Christmas music.

Guess I had better go and figure out what is for dinner. Hope everyone is doing okay.

  20. CAROL...that is chilling. How someone so young can have developed such hatred and lack of respect for life leaves me just sick. Thank goodness the young girl spoke up and even more thankful that she was heard and believed.

LOIS...I am sorry for your losses. And I'm sure it did a world of good for the kids to have had a safe place to gather.

LYNN...wowza...1st again! What did you do? Put a hit out on TINA? LOL!!

    TINA...interview for what?

TINKA...absolutley will the decorations be seen as they look down from heaven.

MARY...thank heavens you let us know LYNN got 1st!! Did you ever manage a peek of some plumber's crack? LOL!!

GOLDIE...glad to see you still have your faculties with the littles ones running around. I bet they are every bit as happy to be with you as you are to have them there!! Enjoy!

WHABBY...I think a lot of today's problems stem from the fact that kids aren't taught respect...of things or people or themselves. It is pretty simple, really. Teacher's hands are tied, parents want to be friends...if they are even around...and kids need limits set from a young age and thru their adolescence. It shows them someone cares enough about them to want to teach and protect them. So damn sad...and scary.

  21. DIANNE...we were typing together!! I didn't watch Jennifer Hudson. I was watching SING OFF...it is really entertaining. What's for dinner?

    ReplyDelete
  22. Carol you will never be able to understand people who think about or do this type of stuff cause your mind just doesn't work like that. You would have to think like them to understand them. There are some very troubled people walking amoung us every day. It's scarey out there.

Congrats to that girls for coming forward and saying something! That took guts.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Congrats Lynn D on 1st!! Well done for the second day in a row!!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Mo- what makes you so sure I still have my faculties?

Oh, and my dog has developed a tic.... LOL

  25. Did you know that edible paint does not equate to washable paint?? My Grandchildren look like Smurfs!! So do I for that matter- just my fingers, actually I look like a rainbow.

Yeah for D.C. - hope the rest of the country takes notice- if we can get it passed in that stodgy old place (respectively said) we can get this nation to take notice!

    ReplyDelete
  26. GOLDIE...if the paint is edible, but not washable...have the kids lick it off!! ijs!!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Good lord Goldie you're feeding the kids paint? You might want to check the Grandma Handbook on that one! ijs :)

    ReplyDelete
  28. SHIRLEY...takes one to know one! Or in the immortal words of Pee Wee Herman...I know I am but what are you? LOL!!

And it's better to feed the babies paint then the famous GOLDIE brownies!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Well if she fed them the brownies at least their poop would be a normal color. Now it will look like the American flag...red, white and blue!!!

  30. Hey Maureen when are you going to the libary again and going on FB? I made a video of myself as an elf dancing to a disco song. You should check it out. I dance pretty good, if I do say so myself!

  33. Mary! I CAN'T HEAR YOU!!!!!~

Mo~ My department is closing in February.....they are opening up 2 new departments and to get into either one of them, you have to interview. I decided to try it out even tho my shift will suck the giant one~ My alternative would be to go to regular customer service and get yelled at.....but be able to make my cards~ :D

Goldie~ I thought of you at dinner....i sat next to a little family with itty bitty kids and it just reminded me of your grandkids....too cute~...and then the smallest spilled his drink EVERYWHERE~ good times~

Shirley~ I read your post and thought...how did you know I was back?~

DiDi~ I read your post about the boys in ur GD's class....so scary....i read it to the hubby~

  43. Hi, Hooters. I just returned from a Christmas party. I sat on Santa's lap and told him I was a bad girl. He gave me a box of chocolates. :)

LynnD Good job being first today.

Tina LynnD was first today. ;)

    Mary How's your plumbing?

NN/LL I am so sorry about your recent tragedies. You are so right that all we can do is just love and support each other. (((HUGS)))

Goldie Sorry, but LOL @ your dog developing a tic!

Bear We keep coming up with new ways to hurt each other. Sad isn't it?

Tinka I have a wreath on the door and I've put up some decorations but I still don't have a tree! Yikes!

Dianne I keep not getting things done, too. My mess is in my bedroom. :(

MO That was a good point about the edible paint. LOL

Shirley At least the poop will be patriotic. Hmmmm...does that even make sense?

Carol It is very, very scary how deep the resentment goes in some kids today. I think kids are more cruel to each other and in more sophisticated ways than was possible in the past. Nowdays, they can humiliate someone, videotape it and put it out on the internet for everyone to see. Kids are not being taught empathy or compassion for others.

  44. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MARY!!!!

    it's finally your birthday~ :)~

  46. Happy Birthday Mary and Mr T. I wonder if MR MARY is going to jump on MARY like TINA is MRT.
Too bad you don't live closer to each other and they could celebrate together.

I did something tonight...I have my packages ready to go to the postoffice tomorrow..that is a huge thing and I already have my cards out. I have a cleaning lady coming tomorrow and have to tell her to not even attempt to come in my office. Of course, I had to clean up the rest of the house for her to come over.

Tomorrow I have a dr appt, lunch and then off to the line at the postoffice. Whoops...good thing I typed this as it just reminded me I have to fast right now for a blood test!

Guess I will head to bed and talk to you all tomorrow.

    Night friends...

  47. OMG, I just listened to my voice messages as I forgot to turn my sound on after the dentist today and can I just say "for the record" ...TINA YOUR SINGING IS NOT A SONGBIRD UNLESS IT COULD BE THAT CROW LL WAS TALKING ABOUT THE OTHER DAY!!!!!
