Should we judge a book by its cover?

by Bonacci

I would like to introduce you to Oderus Urungus. He is the frontman for a band called GWAR. You can find GWAR’s music in any music or book store. Remember Elvis? The Beatles? How about the Stones or Led Zeppelin? Well, this is what the youth of today is listening to. Not so popular, I think, but mention the band to a teen you know and they’ll probably have to scoop their jaw up off the ground after realizing you even know there’s such a thing as GWAR. Oderus is the product of a super computer and a Petri dish. So he says. Really, he’s Dave and he has a real mom and dad. His stage persona is that of an evil being. No good. He sprays his fans with fluids during his live shows. An oxygen thief if ever I met one. I don’t like his music, I don’t like his attitude and I don’t like looking at him.

Then he went and screwed me. He was driving in Pennsylvania and happened upon a woman, in her 50’s or 60’s, who had a flat tire on her car. Oderus morphed into Dave. Dave stopped and changed the tire for the woman, who was grateful and found him to be a delightful man. She asked how she could repay his generosity, and he told her she could never mention he changed her tire. It was bad for his image. He then explained who he was and why he didn’t want news that he might be a decent guy to leak out.

I am not the first to “out” Oderus. The woman wasn’t either. She kept her word. It’s just not common knowledge. Just like the existence of anything called GWAR isn’t common knowledge, at least to us. My point is that I will never “like” Oderus. I’ll never like Dave because he becomes Oderus. But whoever this thing is, he is a human being and he is compassionate. I know of at least one woman who thinks he’s a gentleman and a stand-up guy. The moral? No matter how disgustingly ugly the cover is, the book might not be so bad.

  1. And there was a miracle! I got first.

Tina did Janice kick you off of her computer? Waving at Janice.

Shirley I hope you are feeling better today. (((Hugs)))

  2. "The moral? No matter how disgustingly ugly the cover is, the book might not be so bad."

That quote bonachichi says it all. You just never know what is lurking beneath the surface.

The band persona is just for publicity and in the news factor. Remember KISS my parents thought they were the most deviant looking band around. LOL

  3. Morning Lynn...

    Happy 1..

Tina is off on Fridays, so unless she is home sitting at her computer, Fridays unlikely she will get first..

Lynn I agree, love this quote!

  5. My cousin went thru that "punk" stage.. blue hair, earrings in body parts, black high top boots, chains hanging from his waist.. etc, etc, etc..

If he were not my cousin I prob would have judged him, but I knew him, and he was/is a really great kid. Respectful, Kind, Loving...

His look outside had nothing to do with him inside..

He actually enforced in me, to never judge a book by its cover..

He now is a young adult 23ish, and lives in Brooklyn, no blue hair, no black leather.. he is as normal as the day begins each day..

  8. Carol... ugliest ever? Did I set a record? Hope so.

Lynn, congrats on #1. The Oderus guy is truly one of the most disgusting looking human beings I've ever met. I am still angry at him for being nice a few times. I want so badly to hate him.

    Happy Friday, Hooters!

  9. Bonachichi that is one ugly dude!!! I try not to judge people by how they look but I have to say if I saw this guy on the street I would be a bit nervous.

  10. Congrats on 1st Lynn!

I'm not really feeling any better. It's just a sore throat and cold, but I haven't had one in about 5 years and I'm not liking it. Not one bit!!

    Just Lin thanks for QOTD!

  12. Good Morning!

BONACHI: Guess what? I actually know who GWAR is..not because I ever listened to them..but because Mr Z loved watching 'Beavis & Butthead' and they mentioned the group all the time. I never understood why Mr Z liked that show so much..he would laugh til tears rolled down his face..watching him curled up with laughter sure re-inforced my belief that inside every grown man is a 12 year old boy! Kind of a twist on what you said today BONACHI..don't assume that just because the age on the Driver's License says 40..that the mind and the heart are 40 too!

Btw BONACHI..I think Oderus Urungus kinda looks like one of those hairless chihuahuas! ;)

I really love the last line of your blog BONACHI..as Dave proved..you can never judge a person's heart by how they look.

  13. LYNN: Cock-a-doodle do..FIRST goes to you! Congrats!

I was so bummed when KISS took off their make-up..they looked so...normal! ;)

CAROL: I have a really good friend that went through the 'punk' stage too..all the while studying computers. He now owns a computer graphics studio and was one of the earliest developers of computer animation software! I still remember him pogoing to the Sex Pistols!

SHIRLEY: I hope you feel better soon..tea and honey..Honey.. ;)

    Area 51:

TINKA: You should have called me! JODI can attest to the fact that I would have had you falling asleep in minutes! ;)

DIANNE: Play report! What did you think?

BARB: Please come over and help me make my cards..I'll make Monkey bread.. :D

  14. LynnD Oooh! Congrats on first today! Tina must still be sleeping and Janice gets a day off from helping Tina. LOL

Shirley I especially like the contrast between the quote of the day next to the pic of Oderus! LOL!

Bonach Once in a while, the cover is the true representation. I don't know about Oderus or GWAR, although I have heard that band name. The titles of their songs are really grotesque, such as "F**kin' an Animal" and "Pre-Skool Prostitute". Their stance is probably that these are only words, they are harmless and they have freedom of speech, yadda, yadda, yadda. But how harmless is it really? Is it a good thing to make money by putting these kinds of thoughts and images into young people's minds? That's pretty damn obscene no matter how many tires Oderus changes. As human beings, we have many layers to our behavior. Ted Bundy volunteered on a suicide help line, yet he was a brutal serial killer and nice looking, to boot. You can't judge a book by it's cover alone, nor can you judge someone just because they changed a tire.

    Great, thought provoking blog today.

  15. J/LIN: I watched a movie about Ted Bundy on TV the other night..freaked me out all over again..

  17. J/Lin; I don't know why I'm struggling with your last post. It was my delete and it just didn't sound right to me.

I don't like the GWAR that everyone sees. You apparently, included. I was really happy hating them. The tire incident was the mechanism of change, though. After that, I realized I should look at the whole man/men. If that Oderus guy were my husband, I might just have to shoot myself. As a fellow human being though, I think I can and have done worse.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Well hello everyone. My opinion is that guy looks very scary to me and I would probably star at him if I saw him out. It is not the same as seeing someone that had a terrible accident or something. I try not to judge a book by the cover but sometimes it is really hard not too.

ZONA; PLAY REPORT: Spring Awakening was very different. I think our TV and media mad more of a big deal out of it than needed to be done. Yes, it for sure was for mature audiences and it would be a strange play to go and not know one thing about it like SACBARB said. I could see why some people would leave during the nudity part if they didn't know. I think my two friends and I were prepared for something much worse than we saw. You see much more at an R rated movie in my opinion. Did I like it and would I recommend it...no. I just got kind of lost in some of the story and I like a musical that I can sing along with and needless to say, I have never heard of one of these songs.

SHIRLEY: Get better soon. I'm sorry you are feeling yucky. Can I make some pancakes for you or soup?

    ReplyDelete
  19. Ohhh, he's cute!!

I have never heard of this dude or his band...remember I am an old fart! I think if I saw him in a dark alley...or even a bright alley...I would head for the for the hills yelling "feet don't fail me now"! Then again, I may think I was abducted by aliens and would feel my ass to be sure I wasn't probed.

SHIRLEY... have some hot tea with honey if you have that. Feel better.

CHI CHI...it is true we shouldn't judge a book by it's cover. A "normal" looking person could be an axe murderer and then vice-versa. Take me...on the outside I am fat and ugly, but underneath I am thin and beautiful!!

Then again, there is my honey...JBJ...gorgeous cover and gorgeous inside ;)~

  20. JUST LIN...I agree and understand your post. But, (you know there has to be a but!!!) I think parents have to spend more time teaching right from wrong so kids will understand that this is not what should be molding them. Too often, parents these days are not parents. They want to be friends or they are totally absent in the formulation of kids ethics and morals.

I may have gone off on a tangent there! I am too tired to be sure!

  21. Miss MO: You are not fat and ugly...you are beautiful and funny and smart and a good friend. You are looking in the wrong mirror!! You need to get the mirror TINA uses every day. Look how confident that girl can be each morning at first...even after she asked me if she was pretty on the video and I told her "kind of", it didn't phase her one bit!

  22. I came over to meet my daughter for lunch today and then stayed and did some farming, etc., and wanted to see the girls after school. The youngest was getting ready to go to a sleepover and dropped her phone and it broke..screen cracked inside. OMG, she was hysterical while her mom scrambled to find the warranty and then thought my husband had it and he thought I had it....confusion. She had to go so I took the phone and said we would see what we could find. My daughter did find it and I called and sat on hold for 54 friggin' minutes to find out what to do. I am such a sweet Nana! :)

I am now alone at their house. My daughter was meeting some friends for a happy hour, my SIL is at work and the girls are gone for the night. I wonder how this happened that I came to visit and here I am with the two dogs on the other side of town? Oh well ...

    ReplyDelete
  23. DIANNE...honey, that is sweet. But my dear, keep holding on to that fantasy and you shall be sorely disappointed in Chicago! ijs

    ReplyDelete
  24. MO: You are a wonderful, caring beautiful person..inside and out!

DIANNE: Did you close the blinds? You don't want to look up and see Oderus Urungus looking in at you..ijs.. ;)

    Thanks for the play report!

I have to get back to my farm..Mr Z and I are playing in the snow! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  25. Mo, I am still laughing at "feet don't fail me now"!!

Would any of us run from a chubby, 40-something white guy? Not unless he was doing something to scare us, right? Same person, different face. We run from one, couldn't be bothered by the other. The very same person.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Thanks Maureen for your medical advice but I don't like tea or honey, so now what?

Just Lin I agree with you about Mo, except if her ass is made of bacon I think that would be a turn off for most guys. ijs!

  27. So who is tramping through the woods this year for the xmas trees for the Manor party? I'm not plowing through knee deep snow and freezing my butt off. I think Zona should do it. Her and the Mr. can steam up the forest! Ok this is what I need for trees:

    The Drawing Room - 12ft
    The Parlour - 12ft
    The Dining Hall - 2 x 20ft
    The Front Hall - 25ft
    The Back Hall - 12ft
    The Ball Room - 4 x 12ft
24x 10ft trees for the driveway (12 on either side)

Do you think you can handle that Zona?

    ReplyDelete
  28. SHIRLEY...Hot cocoa? Do you like that? How about some hot soup?
While you're planning the decor for the party, can you maybe have a Menorah and some dreidles, too?

    ReplyDelete
  29. Helloooooo MO: You have seen a couple of my beautiful videos so you already know what I look like...beautiful but not like TINA...cough cough

ZONA: I don't see any snow on Farmtown or Farmville.
    Where are you finding it?

SHIRLEY; I offered to cook a couple of things for you but I don't know if you want me to drag out the pans or not. I think your idea for ZONA and MRZ to get all the trees is a perfect idea. Snow draws them and like you said they can heat up the forrest. Maybe DEEDEE can find some too in the Houston "snow storm" today. My cousins there say they are "freezing" and closed the offices early. I wonder how they would like my 5 degrees?

Ok, I guess I had better see what you do with these dogs..me being such a pet person and all.

MO: Quit being so darn hard on yourself. You have seen what many of us look like and I think Chicago will be like a Miss America pagent and you all know how I love pagents and award shows!! I'll bring the banners and you can be Miss Cleveland...hmm, that sounds very pretty...right?

    ReplyDelete
  30. Shirley, you should drink Nyquil. A lot of it. Whilst you are busy snoring, we will take care of all your Nest accounting records. No worries, we'll handle everything. All you have to do is drink that Nyquil. It's good for you. What do they say? The Kick-You-In-The-Ass medicine for when a cold's kicking your ass? We'll take care of everything.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Shirley Sorry about your cold. You did see that I got first and 25th today, right? LOL

Bonach I don't mean to be contrary. I guess I'm just saying that sometimes you really can judge a book by it's cover. Take the Grand Wizard of the KKK for example. Is he a better human being if he takes off his sheet and changes a tire for some white woman? Not in my book, he isn't. If most of what a person does with his life is vile, then I don't think everyday niceties makes up for that.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Dianne you can make me the hot cocoa that Mo mentioned. But don't put any of those damn marshmellows in it, I don't like them. And don't put too much sugar in it. Make sure it isn't too hot either, I don't want to burn my throat. Thanks, I appreciate it.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Bonachichi I don't take Nyquil, it doesn't go well with the meds I take. I have just taken Tylenol, extra strength.

Don't worry about the stats. As long as I write down who said QOTD I can come back anytime and get the rest. But thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Just Lin don't worry, I'll make sure your stats get recorded. This is the final month for the stats.

    ReplyDelete
  35. SHIRLEY...since we're helping ypu with the stats, be sure to note that I got 1st, 10th, 25th, 69th and 100 today ;)~

    DIANNE...you're just too sweet! SWAK!

  36. Nice try Maureen. I have a cold, I'm not blind! We haven't even reached 40 yet.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Well it doesn't look like Dianne is going to make my Hot cocoa, so I'm off to bed. I have to go out in the morning to get a few things, then it's back home and watch the 6th season of the Waltons.

    Night everyone!

Ya know, there is always a flip side, and yes sometimes you can see a person for who they are.. I guess it really depends on the situation..
Hopefully we can judge a character enough to know.. I do think knowing comes with getting wiser and older.
