The Exercise You Really Need~!

by Bebbi

I am MAD…! Why? Because of the lies that are being told to people about how much exercise you really need. The recommendation is 30 minutes, three times a week and a healthy diet. Well, I am here to tell you from GREAT experience that is a bunch of Malarkey!

There was a study done on this recently and I read it on Yahoo. I didn’t have to read it though, because I have been living it. I have been stuck at the same weight for over 6 months~! AND, I exercise an hour MINIMUM EVERY DAY (no days off, mind you). Also, I eat healthy…lots of fruit and veggies (okay, I do “mess up” occasionally but you would think all the exercise would compensate!). Besides elliptical, I do strength training, yoga, and Zumba. I am impressed with how much I am doing but not impressed with the results on the scale

I could go on and on about this all day. Did you know that an hour of elliptical is 600 calories and 3….yes THREE cookies can be 600 calories. So, I may “bitch and moan” but I know that my issue is a math issue, more intake than out-take in my caloric values.

The article is called, “Why Overweight Women Struggle to Slim Down” by LiveScience. Here is a little snippet, but it is worth going to read the whole article. “The study involved more than 34,000 women in the United States, and looked at how much weight they gained over a 13-year period, from 1992 to 2007.

The women were divided into three groups: those who engaged in less than 150 minutes of moderate-level physical activity per week; those who performed 150 to 420 minutes of this type of activity per week; and those who did more than 420 minutes per week, which comes out to one hour a day. Moderate-level activities included things like brisk walking, gardening and leisurely bicycling.

On average, the women gained about 6 pounds (2.6 kilograms) during the study period. Those in the two lesser activity groups (less than 150 minutes or between 150 and 420 minutes) gained significantly more weight than those who exercised more than 420 minutes a week. “

So there you have it. That is the source of my anger, we are being lied to about what level of exercise will actually help us fight the battle of the bulge. How much do you exercise each week? What do you do? Did you think you could exercise 30 minutes, 3 times a week and lose weight?

Do you know how I release my anger about this? I go and EXERCISE! J

  2. Morning Glories!

Bebbi I don't know if the purpose of the article (because I have not read it) is weight loss or if they are promoting health. The articles I have read promote 30 minutes 3 times a week for a cardio workout. To excercise you heart and lungs.

Face it when women reach a certain age any exercise 3 times a week is not going to help weight fall off. You have to have a cardio, weight training routine that is more like 5 to 6 times a week.

My reality is if they tell me I have to work out 6 days a week for 1-2 hours, well I would say screw that!

A half hour sounds much more attainable and I could possibly do that. I think a lot of these articles just are trying to encourage people to get up and move.

Love your new pic. What ever happened to turbans as a fashion statement? Seems the only ones who wear them now are bikers, gang bangers and certain religious ethnic groups.

  5. Good Morning!

BEBBI: How much do I exercise? Not enough, that's for darn sure! I try to take an hour walk every day, but sometimes my knee just won't let me. I'll be swimming every day, sometimes twice a day, come May. But for right now, walking is about my only exercise. I get so frustrated because I'll walk a mile or so one day..then my knee rebels the next, and I feel as if I haven't accomplished anything. I think 30m a day 3 times a week is really just a start..or a way to maintain your weight. If you want to lose weight I would think you'd have to do a lot more than that..and watch what you eat. It also helps if your husband doesn't bring home apple strudel..ijs.. ;)

LYNN: Helllllooo Gorgeous! :) I've reached that certain age..and right now it sucks! ;)

  6. HI DEEDEE! Is that Joan Crawford? I can't quite tell..my eyesight is of a certain age too..lol..

When I joined the gym I joined just to stay healthy.. and yes I did def feel better.. but did not lose any weight.. but my eating habits did not change..

I think you need to be determined, you just have to want it more.. like Bebbi.. she was ready, and boy did she take off..

  15. Zona!! no silly! Its me!! Just on my way to the hairdresser this morning!

I'll tell you what works for me....I do "Visual Aerobics several times a week....(shaking head yes)...you just find a really comfortable chair...a favorite libation...some wonderful hors d'oeuvres.....and while you are enjoying those....visual yourself exercising!!

This is what I have done for years and have never had a weight issue!

Well....I'm off to get coiffed with Jean Claude.... Tina's plane just lifted off for Atlanta and I want to be ready for the day when her plane touches down....

    ReplyDelete
  16. Gee Bebbi... I saw that report and I thought it was a bunch of nonsense. That's 90 seconds of my life that I'll never get back.

We need to stop beating ourselves up when the numbers on the scale don't change. The target should be health, not some magic number. Bebbi, your body likes what you're doing for it. Don't you feel better?

  19. Happy Monday Owls.

Bebbi, I have not read the article, but I have always known we are being lied to when it comes to exercise. One lie is how much exercise it takes to lose weight, as you have stated and the other lie is that if you exercise, you will have more energy. I never felt energetic after exercising, only tired. I have a stationary bicycle and I usually ride it 3-4 times a week. It hasn't made a difference in my weight at all. I sometimes wonder why I continue to do it.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Bebbi. Don't forget that muscle weighs more than fat. I bet your BMI has continued to improve and you are more toned due to your efforts

Have to run but waving at you all.

  23. you know...I was thinking...rather than have that divan redone....we could just keep it for gas-ie people....and I have one in storage that I think would look nice over here.....

I found it at a yard sale at the Peterhof palace in St. Petersburg a couple of years ago...its a Turkish divan that was given to Catherine the Great by one of her generals as a spoil of victory over the Turks...

I'll post a picture of it on FB...let me know what you think...everyone will be able to see it........

    ReplyDelete
  24. OMG..Tina!..

I had promised that divan to Tina....shhhhhh!! I'll get it moved before she gets back from Atlanta....she'll never know the difference....

    ReplyDelete
  25. Tina doesn't realize that running from all the angry people she's pissed off is exercise.

  26. Finally got my hair done....

Did you all hear about Ricky Martin??!! He came out on his website in a very moving statement about himself and his children.....bless his heart.....I posted it on FB....

I have added a few more divans to the mix......a vote maybe??

Maybe it is just my eye...but there seems to be a urine/poop/puke stain on the first cushion of Catherine the Greats divan....I don't know if the Turks did it or Catherine herself.....sad....

No wonder I got it so cheap!

    ReplyDelete
  27. DeeDee, put the other one back in and check again...

    ReplyDelete
  28. Ricky came out of where? Walmart? Macy's? 31 Flavors? WHERE? ga!!!! DeeDee, why do you leave us hanging?

    ReplyDelete
  29. Hey All!

    Congrats on first LynnD!

I had a crazy day at work so I wasn't able to comment but I did come and see what was up for a second.

Thanks for all the interesting comments. I guess I am just frustrated because I would like to see more progress in my change of lifestyle. I shouldn't get discouraged but it is frustrating at times for me. And, marshmallow eating binges don't help..haha.

    Going to read more comments.

  30. Sacbarb: That was exactly my point in this blog. We are being lied to. I do know why I am doing it but it would be nice to told the truth to and not be lead down a path that 30 minutes, 3 times a day will fix all the years of fast food, high fat and over indulgence. Ya know? I am glad I am doing it but it upsets me for people who can't because it has to be a super high level of frustration. Believe me, I know because my knees and body were heading there too..still, I worry about injury and what will happen if I do injure myself.

Tina: I am sure you are one of those naturally thin women who can eat anything you want and never exercise. My SIL was like that...oh, you people...grrr...must be NICE..I admit it, I am JEALOUS.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Bebbi!!! ARE U ON CRACK? I'm overweight, gained back all the weight I lost.....know full well that I feel better when I exercise....know full well that I should eat better and drink more water.....and I don't!~!!!!~ ugh~

    ReplyDelete
  32. Zona: I understand completely about the knee issues. I have them too..they have been getting better since there is less weight on them but it is a struggle. Swimming is a good idea. I used to do that more often and need to start it back up again. The only thing I found about swimming was that it would displace my knee more..not sure why but it seems to be because of the water...I had more knee trouble when I swam more. I also use Glucosamin / Chrondroitin. That really helps tremendously.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Tina: Oh, you are NOT overweight! No way, I've seen your pics!

    ReplyDelete
  34. OMG, I had the absolutely most crappiest Monday. It really sucked.

  44. They say there is "weather" in SF. Well, duh! Isn't there always weather in SF? We'll be lucky to take off at 8:00.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Speaking of weather, I wonder what kind of clothes I need to bring to Chicago.

    ReplyDelete
  46. LynnD,You are such a cutie today!

Bebbi, I think the 30 minutes works great at a young age. I used to run, bike & exercise all the time and I was pretty buff until I got into my 40s. From then on I kept adding on the lbs! I was making no progress. Then I hurt my knee and couldn't exercise. I am very short and the wait hung on me terribly! About 8 yrs ago I had a tummy tuck and lipo. I looked great until I had to have a knee replacement! more weight!
Well, long story long lol! Wednesday I am having what they call a "Smart Lipo" . I know it is cheating, but am doing it anyway. I will be having a local anesthesia along with some Valium. The fat is melted with laser, sucked out, and then skin tightened. He is a highly accredited plastic surgeon and it will be done in a hospital. The recovery time is fast. If I was working I would be be back to work in 2 or 3 days.
Now that it is getting warm out I will start walking again and watch my food intake. I will not look like a model, nor do I wish to, just want to fit in my cloths better!
I am not sure if I will push "publish"...... lol, K, I will

    ReplyDelete
  47. J/L: Generally speaking the weather is between 65 and 45 in late April and early may. Sometimes windy so bring a windbreaker.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Mary: You made me laugh when you said, not sure if I will push publish, k, i will. LOL, sounds like the things that go through my head too. Well, that is nice that you get the lipo. I would too, and need to get stuff tightened up. I will have to look into it.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Good evening feathered friends!

I just came home from pigging out royally!! I feel like crap, but it was all so good!

BEBBI...we have an initiative at work...Shape Up UH. I am on a team that is going to try and get lots of steps in. I got my pedometer (gratis from the hospital) and I put it on at 1:45 and I have 2075 steps in! I am determined to get 4000 today, so later on I will walk up and down the stairs...or in circles!

JUST LIN...if you are going to be touristy downtown, I would suggest layers, as it may be cold if there is a wind off the lake.

    ReplyDelete
  50. BEBBI...when I was doing WW and hit a plateau, I would have a really major pig out...like a buffet and it would jog my metabolism. I would end up losing weight that week. A plateau is your body being used to where it is and sometimes needs to be shaken up a little

    ReplyDelete
  51. Mo: Cool~! I love my steps..haha. :) I got 18,847 today.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Mary. Good for you. I've never heard of a "smart" lipo before. I assume insurance won't cover something like that. I need my whole body to be lipoed. LOL

    ReplyDelete
  53. Justlin, nope insurance won't cover it. I am dipping into my 401k. I am treating myself! My best gifts are from me! Kinda like redoing my kitchen, only I am redoing my tummy and love handles! lol!!

    ReplyDelete
  54. I think that is a very nice gift to yourself. :)

    ReplyDelete
  55. MARY...that is so awesome for you. If I ever have money, I want to get one of those lifestyle face lifts!

    ReplyDelete
  56. I would get lipo, tummy tuck, booby raise, and laser hair removal on my face..~! Those are the things I want.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Yay!!! Our blog is ready for spring.. check out the new template.. finally, choices..

    Happy Spring!

    ReplyDelete
  58. I have been playing on blogger templates and everyone has been playing here and I missed it..

    ReplyDelete
  59. Maureen...

I have a 60 year old cousin who got that "lifestyle face lift...

She looks great...its most noticeable in her neck....but she told me that if she had known what she knows now...(what she would go thru) that she would spend the extra money and have a complete face lift with eyes included....

She spent $7500 on the "lifestyle" because she didn't think she had enough recovery time to do a regular facelift.....but now she wishes she had gone ahead....

But as far as I am concerned...she looks fantastic....

    ReplyDelete
  60. Oh you didn't miss anything..just some lipo-suctioning, boobie lifting, complimenting and complaining.

    ReplyDelete
  61. CAROL...so pretty! And green...just like LYNN D!

$7500?? They make it sound like it is much cheaper then that!

    ReplyDelete
  62. Bebbi..

you have zappos in your backyard and you shop @ dsw.. tsk, tsk, tsk...

    ReplyDelete
  63. I know Maureen....I was surprised at the cost as well....

but thats what it cost her....

She said there were no surprises....everything, including costs were discussed beforehand...

Its a good thing....they just don't touch your eyes or eyebrow area..

    ReplyDelete
  64. I am ocding about the template, when we post vids I don't think the vid is going to fit, I hate when it goes over the line.. I prob will change the template again, and again, and again, and again.. there are so many to choice from..

    ReplyDelete
  65. DSW is close by and I had a reward coupon. :) Zappos is fun, but on the other side of town and the warehouse is not open late enough for stress shoe shopping (SSS)

    ReplyDelete
  66. I keep changing templates, so much my eyes are burning.. so I have to give up and play more tomorrow..

  69. Hi Everyone...good blog BEBBI. I think you do great on your exercise and walking. I am here to tell you after seeing and spending time with TINA...she is not overweight one darn bit.

MO: Glad to know about out to get off a plateu at WW as I have been following it and am stuck...guess I will go to a buffet..yum, can't weight opps... I mean wait..:)

TINA: Glad you are safe and in your room in Atlanta..probably sound asleep about now your time.

It is going to be 78 degrees tomorrow...wow, are hottest. I had to go to the dentist today to have my stupid bridge checked and drilled down and a filling on a crown that I pulled out a couple of weeks ago. He told me I need yet another root canal on a tooth. I am going to try and take an anti biotic to see if it will let me postpone it for awhile...sick of dentists. I asked him if his Hummer pick up was paid off by me yet. I would much rather be having a face lift or going on another cruise.

J/L: Hope you are home by now and that you had a great time.

Think I will go to bed early tonight as I have early appts for the next three days.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Goodnight Diane :)
You are right, I have met Tina and she is not fat, the bitch!

    ReplyDelete
  71. Another root canal, Dianne? Yuck!

Mary, I guess you're getting one too... of a different sort! LOL!

Exercise... yes, I used to run 40 minutes almost every weekday, until my achilles tendons gave out and I had to scale back. Now the tendons are healthy, and I'm getting back into it slowly but surely, but the damage has been done. Up 12-13 lbs.

    :(

    ReplyDelete
  72. BEBBI - Now that the weather is nicer I've been out walking!! Love it ♥ I still stand by my theory that I'm one goon colonic away from being at my ideal weight!! ;)

CAROL - Will have to watch Nurse Jackie after work today. God bless on demand ♥

Sorry for the late post. My internet was wonky yesterday. I hope everyone has a great Tuesday!!
