What's in a Name?

by Maureen

I recently asked SACBARB how her granddog got to be named CANTON, if it was after Canton, OH and the Football Hall of Fame. Lo and behold, that is indeed how the name came about.

I started thinking of pets and the names owners choose. I had the cutest little lab mutt and I named her SHAYNA as that means beautiful...because she was. Sadly she was a beautiful terror and ate EVERYTHING in sight, including linoleum and tore her cute little belly to shreds :( and we had to put her to sleep. I digress...

Once, my friend decided to buy her boyfriend a Beagle pup. Too damn cute. He didn't want it and I couldn't keep it nor could she, so we gave it to the dorm as their dorm pup! The guys decided to name it DAMN IT! They thought it would be cool when they wanted her to come to yell...come here DAMN IT!!

One of my friends found a stray Golden. It was emaciated and flea riddled. They bundled her up and took her to a vet. A dog was the last thing she wanted, but when the Vet told her she was lucky to be alive and had they not found her and brought her in she would have certainly perished quickly. 6 years later she is still known as LUCKY and lives a charmed life with my friend and her family.

Joni just got 2 new kitties (yes, more to take care of when she goes on vacation!!) and being the Seinfeld fan she is she named them ELAINE BENIS and JERRY SEINFELD.

If I ever got a pet I already decided that if I got a kitten I would name it PUPPY DOG and if I got a puppy it would be named KITTY CAT...just for shits and giggles and to see the looks on people faces when I called for my puppy..."here Kitty, here Kiity!"

Tell me about the names of your pets and how you came upon them. Were the names pre-determined or did you get the name after seeing it? And what would you name future additions to your fur family?

  1. Good moanning!

Tina is the most gorgeous this AM! Congrats!

Poe was named when we adopted him. I was going to change his name (to Boris) but he said POE and knew his name.

Nancy was named for my aunt Nancy. My aunt had pancreatic cancer and lived 1 1/2 years.

She received treatment at the MD Anderson cancer hospital in Houston, and was given experimental meds and Chinese herbs.

She lived a year longer than she was given.

Nancy the kitty survived a day or 2as an abandoned newborn kitten.

So her name seemed to fit, both were fighters and managed to survive.

Don't remember how Paula got her name, and Lilly the dog was an Easter present, so she was named for the Easter lilly.

Gotta get ready for work! Hope everyone has a great day!

  2. I named my maltese/yorkie mix Belle...I was thinking of "Beauty and the Beast"...

and paired with my other dog....a gansta-bitch named Blue....there you have your beauty and the beast...

But I find myself almost always calling her "Booger"....and of course I am not referring to the dried snot residue in the nose.....but I really don't know where I get it...

I call her Bellie-wellie....Boogie woogie....my angel wangel...my sweet baby and of course "Y U little shit"....

My parakeet God rest her soul....was named after my Aunt Ruby....who also died of a massive coronary after her husband...the Mayor... was found and photographed in a local motel room wearing a turquoise blue Dale Evans swimsuit with cowgirl fringe...

    it was quite the scandal...

  3. Tucker was already named when we got him......but I call him Dumb Dog! I get in his face and call him that and he wags his stub!!!

My cats official name is DJ (after Dale Jarrett), but I find myself calling her Cheena or ChaCha or My Pretty Gurl!

Oh.....and sometimes I call the dog "You piece of rat crap!" depending on what he does~ :D

  4. Well sheesh! We've all named something, haven't we? I had a potbellied pig named Slop. Ate every living thing in the yard. A mini-horse we named Horse, then changed his name to Asshole when he became the Attack Horse From Hell. I don't know why people laugh when they hear me call my chihuahua Ernie. A perfectly acceptable name, if you ask me.

I did have a dog named J.B., years ago. Jail Bait. Long story.

  5. MO Thanks for the blog today.
Working for a vet, I seen a lot of unusual pet names. I don't recall seeing a kitty named Dog or a dog named Kitty but there are several dogs named Dog and kitties named Kitty. I used to have lots and lots of cats so had to get creative with the names. I only have one 19 year old cat left, now, and her name is Beaner. I'm not sure why. The sound of it just would come to mind as I got to know her when she was a feral kitten.

  7. But Tina...how did you all come up with the name "Draco"....I know it is latin for "dragon" and a constellation....but I have always meant to ask you...and always forget...I guess because you always throw me off my thoughts with your "draconian" verbal beatings...

    sniff..sniff..

Tomorrow we are visiting fishing village and hitting the beach.
My first and only cat was calico, so we named her "Colors". We had 2 beagles during the Jimmy Carter era.
One was "Peanuts, the other "Carter",Then we went through the Vegas stage, named dogs, "Keno", "Black Jack" & "trixie"(hoes tricks, get it)lol!!
Our latest puppy is Zoie, I found her name in my Greek travel guide book under "cities".
I named my son Matthew after a boy I had a crush on who lived across the street, my ex MIL thought it was after her Dad !but that's another story lol!

  11. MO - Our black lab's AKC name was Midnight Dakota HD.....but we just called her Dakota. She was named after both my hubby's vehicles at the time. Midnight because she was black....Dakota because he had a Dodge Dakota pickup.....and HD because he also had a Harley Davidson.

TINA - Moaning again I see!!

EBJ - I remember when you were naming Nancy.

DEE DEE - I had almost forgot about poor Ruby ;)

SLIN - Beaner....cute!! It makes me think of the phrase I use when I take 2 of the kids in the truck with me. We call it "beaner packing"!!

MARY - Your trip sounds devine!! How did it go on the ass....I mean donkey today? ;)

  12. JODI: Your avatar is jut too darn cute!!!

I used to have a lab we called Pepper because she had a white patch under her chin. I don't have any pets. Both of my kids do but I don't really know how they came up with their names except for the boys turtles...One is named John and the other is named Elway...how original and cute it that...."she said". It's fun hearing how you all came up with your pet names. MO: I love your kittty and dog names :)

  14. MO: Nikki is just Nikki because we liked the name..but if I had to do it all over again I'd name her Nutbutt..cuz she sure can be crazy! I usually call her Goofball anyway..lol..Remmy was named after the show Remington Steele..Pierce Brosnan dontcha know. We used to call him Hoover because he was always sniffing around for food!

TINA: I thought Tucker was named after someone that works for DEEDEE.. ;)

MARY: I love the Vegas names! Have fun at the beach tomorrow..take lots of pics! :)

JODI: AKC names can sometimes be so pretentious..but Dakota's name was very cool!

My new washing machine washed my comforter with no problem..Yay! I know..why do we have a comforter on the bed in the summer..I DON'T KNOW!

I better get back to cleaning up..MO I did the left side..now the right is dusty again.. ;)

  15. Jail Bait. A man dating an underage girl? None of you were ever that? I lived with the guy when I was in high school and for a couple years after that. He named our Pug J.B. I never did like that dog.

  16. BONACHICHI - The guy or your pet?

    ReplyDelete
  17. ZONA - We thought it was cool without the stuffiness!!

  18. Jodi, lol! I didn't like the dog. The guy was a nice guy. Much older than me though. All these ex-wives kept popping up though, and it didn't seem like a good omen.

  19. Good eeevening Owls.

Mo, I'm so glad I could inspire this blog. I like hearing how people decide on their pets names.

The cocker spaniel that we had for 16 years was named Dart when we got him. We meant to change it but he kinda fit the name because of the way he chased birds and cats so we just let him be Dart.

When my oldest was four my Hubby brought home a black Lab and my son named him Paladin because he liked that TV show. It seemed to fit because the star always wore black. We also had a white Eskimo Dog I named Casper (as in the friendly ghost).

I also had a Siamese cat I named Cleopatra. I don't know why, it just seemed exotic. And finally, I had an angora cat I named Puff. Puff would eat corn on the cob very neatly, one row at a time. It was a kick to watch.

  20. Tina, you look george-ous today.

EBJ, POE seems to fit better than Boris.

Waving a wing also to DeeDee, J/L, Mary, Jodi, Dianne, Zona and all the others that land later.

MARY...nice to see you visiting from Greece! Hope you are having a great time!

DIANNE...John and Elway! LOL! Was he slow on the field? LOL!! hahaha

ZONA...glad you found that spot on the left! Pierce Brosnan...hubba hubba!

I have been trying to remember other dog's name I have had and I am really drawing such a blank. I did have 2 pups my mom named...Pete and Tillie after some movie that was popular at the time. Pete was a ginormous black mutt and Tillie was a petite little white pup with a massive fanning tail. They were brother and sister so I am assuming the mommy was a slut!!!!

  25. SacBarb, no worries about forgetting me. I do it all the time. Forget myself, I mean.

I really enjoyed reading about everyone's pets and how they got their names. Made me feel quite sane, really.

Mary, get off the dang donkey!! A friend posted a preview for a Brit show called An Idiot Abroad. Would that be you, maybe?

  26. MO Sometimes I call Beaner Bean Bag Baby. I once had male and female ferrets named Mo the Magnificent and Tillie the Toilet. LOL

  27. SacBarb I used to love the show Paladin when I was a kid. When playing house, I would sometimes pretend my husband was Richard Boone.

  28. Hi, Barb! Landing later... LOL!

I wish I had a pet name story to share, but since Huz and I are both allergic to both cats and dogs, I got nuthin!

  31. Good Morning Everyone!

MO, good blog...my first dog was a mutt and I named her Mandy. Not because I liked Manilow or the song that much...I just liked the name.
My first cat was a stray and a mess when we found him, so I named him Icky, even though he was really pretty once he was cleaned up. The second cat I called Kickers, because that's what he liked to do..kick.
I knew as soon as I got the boxers I would name one Ruby Gizella... after both of my grandma's and the other was named after Boz Scaggs, cuz I like his music.

Tina, I meant to tell you....I think your Boxer is adorable.
