  5. on a serious note...

Matthew Shepard passed away quietly in the early morning hours of Oct. 12, 1998, with his family at his bedside. He died because of violence fueled by anti-gay hatred. For a lot of reasons, some of which we will probably never quite understand, the world had been watching, praying for him, and voicing their outrage.

October cannot go by anymore, and never will again, without us wondering what might have been, for us and for so many other families, if hatred of gay, and lesbian, and bisexual, and transgendered people, and all those whom others simply think might be, had been rooted out long ago.

What was done to Matthew is still hard to deal with...remembering thru his parents...and all the videos and worldwide news coverage...

Every time I read about it I learn something new...like the fact that I learned today that a doe was laying near him thru the 18 hours that he was tied to that fence post....
That helped his parents knowing that maybe he wasn't completely alone.
And today I also read testimony that the only places on his face that weren't covered with blood were where his tears had washed it away...

His funeral was the first time I had ever heard of the Westboro Baptist Church...

And I believe that it was the first time America and much of the world was galvanized against this intolerable hate...

Bill Clinton got the Hate-Law ball rolling and Barack Obama finally was able to get it passed....

It was then and will continue to be ignored by the GOP base....equal rights and protection is only good with them if you are a rich christian who believes the fairy tale they push but do not live by....

Thank goodness for the Matthew Shepard Foundation whose mission is to encourage respect for human dignity and difference by raising awareness, opening dialogues, and promoting positive change.
