Junk Drawer

by Zona

Every house has a 'junk drawer'...a drawer where you throw things that you don't know what to do with..but don't want to throw away because you just might need them someday. We actually have four or five junk drawers...(and a junk room and a junk closet...but let's not get into those right now)...and I decided to take a look into one of them to see some of the 'can't live without' things that are in there. Here's what I found...one Jack Nicklaus golf ball with the word Muirfield stamped on it. My dad played golf back in the 70's. Maybe we are keeping this golf ball in case Mr Z decides to play one day..of course he'll need a golf club too..let's see..nope..not one in here. There's a Kodak 100 Instamatic camera..it takes 126 film. No film inside it though...phooey. Oh look..an earphone with a cord about 20ft long..I can't even imagine what this is for..maybe so you can listen to a transistor radio that's in the living room while you're in the kitchen? A deck of Pinochle cards. My folks had friends over often in the 70's to play this confusing card game. Oh wait..my mistake..these are Poker cards..ahhh the old days..when we used actual cards to play Solitaire! Flashcubes!! I better keep these in case I find 126 film for the camera..unless you want them DI?? ;)

There are screws and picture hangars and all sorts of other doo-dads in this drawer...I don't why they're all here..I only know that we must keep them...just in case. So...what kind of junk is in your drawers? ;D

  3. However, I do have a drawer that has some very USEFUL things in it:
a pair of Dad's glasses and case (he's only been gone 11 years)
    a cribbage board
    a hammer
    instructions to something
a deck of cards from my b-day in 1978
    thread
a wooden berry masher of my Grandmother's
    an embroidery hoop
    candle snuffer
    a couple key chains
    dice
tongs used to get the cover off a wood stove

As I said, all useful things.

  5. Zona - What a great blog. It gives me inspiration to clean out my junk drawer. I will keep a list and report back to you later. Right now I must eat my breakfast and feed the babies.
Have a great day all owls everywhere.

  6. Okay Zona - I have taken out the drawer and will start to clean it out.

    I see-

Sharpener for scissors, don't know where the scissors are.

Auto car wipes, I opened one and they are still moist so I will keep them.

3 clean ketchup bottle tops. These are handy because every time I use the ketchup I put a clean top on and throw the other one in the dishwasher. I think I got that idea from the "Hints from Heloise" column. I will keep those in the drawer.

Power leash for a puppy - must keep that because one never knows I might get a puppy again someday.

Masking tape - can't find where it starts. Into the garbage it goes.

Fastener for a picture frame. Might find out I need that someday.

    Used Christmas candle (garbage)

Candles for Halloween pumpkins. These I need.

Crayons . Now that my granddaughter is 13 she probably won't be colouring pictures any time soon.

Safety pins and elastic bands. Now I can't throw those out.

I have only started and I am getting tired so I think I will put it all back and clean it out on a rainy day when I have nothing to do.

Zona, your inspiration lasted just so long and now I am off to my farms. By the time you visit me that drawer will be cleaned out. I PROMISE!!

  7. My junk drawer...I guess is my middle desk drawer....I did a little rummaging and found some rattlesnake eggs...a tube of Boudreaux's Butt Paste and some rubber snot.

The rattlesnake eggs were mucho fun. Its an envelope with a menacing photo of a rattlesnake that says DANGER! LIVE EGGS! See...it has this rubber band apparatus that causes a commotion when you open the envelope to look...usually scares the bejesus out of people. But the envelope is old and tattered....if I handed it to someone now they would figure those eggs have to be dead...

The rubber snot was fun too... it has a forked part to hold it in you nose while the big wad of hangy down snot drips out your nose...

a lovely trip down memory lane....

  8. the tweezers are probably ruined....RUINED!!

  9. think I was kidding about the butt paste?

  10. Michael I'm surprised you even know what or where your junk drawer is! Don't you have junk drawer people to take care of mundane things like that?

    ReplyDelete
  11. Shirley....

I have "my own" space...crikey!! NOBODY touches my desk!

btw...I have since located a Cross pen and pencil set and a valet key chain from Tiffany's...and some x-rated negatives that I never knew where to take for development...

And keys...keys to stuff I don't know from...

  12. Happy Friday Owls.

Zona, I have several junk drawers too. In one of them I had 25 of those things that hold water and a single flower. I don't know what they are called. I saved them from flowers that my hubby and children had given me. Last year I was in charge of the Mother's Day Brunch for our sorority chapter and I decided that everyone that attended would get a single rose. We have 19 members and we also had some guests so I was able to use all of them. Now, if I hadn't saved them for the last 40+ years, I would have had to buy them and I am sure they are very expensive. So, every time I go through a junk drawer, I am sure I will use all that crap someday, if I live long enough.

  14. Tina, Good moaning georgeous.

Shirley, LOL @ the junk in your trunk. yvw :)

Tinka, I applaud you for being able to throw out the Christmas candles and crayons. When I was a cub scout leader I would melt old candles and crayons for the boys to decorate for various holiday gifts. I will never be a cub scout leader again, but I still don't throw away old candles, just in case I get in a crafty mood.

Michael, I have a container of something called Anti-Monkey Butt Powder. It was a gag gift one of my kids got a long time ago. The label states that it can be used "indoors or outdoors, work or play or on occasions when you sit on your butt all day." I may throw it out.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Michael...

Does that mean you CLEAN that space too? Wow you are almost like the average man!

    ReplyDelete
  16. Oh Barb don't throw out the Anti-Monkey Butt Powder, send it to Michael! It may help him. He already has the butt cream.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Michael, per Shirley's suggestion, would you like the powder to go with your cream? It has never been opened.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Tina Good morning, er, afternoon, beautiful! Congtrats on being first. Are you all sunshiney where you are?

    ReplyDelete
  19. thanks Barb...but the butt cream is a real product...lol...I don't really sit on my butt all day...sometimes I lie down...but thats funny...you should keep it!!

No Shirley! I don't clean anything...it just messes up worse! But the White girls don't go thru my drawers....as far as I know...although they do put away my washable things...

I have a huge toolbox that holds things like hammers and drill bits...staples and a staple gun...different tapes and all the things to do just about anything...but I don't know where it is....and no one seems to want to talk about it...

  20. Zona Fun blog! You have some interesting stuff in your drawers. ;) We remodeled my kitchen about 5 or 6 years ago so myn "official" junk drawer is not nearly as junky as it was at that time. There are other drawers in this house that have weirder stuff shoved into a corner. However, my official junk drawer has:

    Pens and pencils
3 Scotch Tape dispensers (1 is empty)
    Packing tape
    2 kinds of scissors
1 old toothebrush for scrubbing the hummingbird feeders
    Mini screwdriver
BIC lighter with Taurus emblem (my sign) It was probably a Xmas stocking gift.
    Lots of extra twisty ties
    Twine
    Crayola crayons and Crayola glue
    Note pads and Post-its
    Take-out menus
    Staples and staple remover
    Old package of cough drops
    A safety pin
    A dead 9 volt battery
A package of replacement bulbs for a string of Xmas tree lights

  21. Michael Barb's Anti-Monkey Butt Powder is a real product, also. I see it at ACE Hardware, actually, so it must be very manly. LOL

    ReplyDelete
  22. Shirley You have some nice momentos in your junk drawer. Do you embroider or did that belong to your grandmother, too?

    ReplyDelete
  23. SacBarb At least you will never have a monkey on your butt or a butt like a monkey. LOL

    ReplyDelete
  24. Tinka LMAO @ can't find where the masking tape starts. Good for you for throwing it in the garbage. That'll show it!

  25. I think I found the number one useless piece of junk that I have in a drawer. It happens to be in the corner of a dresser drawer in the bedroom where some other bizarre stuff resides. It is one of those plastic inserts that you put in a 45 record so you can play it on a regular spindle of a record player. I have no 45's or any other records, anymore, for that matter.

    ReplyDelete
  26. IT IS!! IT IS A REAL PRODUCT!!

J/L...I thought Barb meant it was a gag!!!

    Thats it! Gotta have some!

They also have the lady "ANTI MONKEY BUTT POWDER!!"

    Yall give good "drawers!!"

  27. wait a minute....Shirley is trying to give me "pasty ass"...

    ...glares..

  28. I wrote a comment and poof it just disappeared.

    It basically said -
Up from my nap and OMG it is now raining. I promised to clean out my drawer on a rainy day. Oh well we live in the West Coast Rain Forest so I guess there will be many more rainy days to complete that interesting task.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Michael Well, the boys gave it to Barb as a joke but it is quite real. I guess one can't have too much protection against "monkey butt". What is that anyway? A glaring red baboon ass? LOL

    ReplyDelete
  30. Although Michael has the most interesting things in his drawer I think the prize for the "Most useless thing in a Junk
Drawer" must go to Just_Lin for having plastic inserts that you put in a 45 record. Can anyone top that? Let's have a contest.

  31. Barb - Isn't it a great feeling to find a use for something that you have been hoarding? It is usually the opposite for me. I throw things out and then discover I could use them. That is maddening. It even happens on my farms. I sell items just before they could be useful. Isn't there a law that covers that?

    ReplyDelete
  32. Tinka Ah, nature played a little joke on you. I'm sure there will be another rainy day to work on that little project.

    ReplyDelete
  33. We are off to get my hair done. Then if we both feel well we will continue on to the Mall and pick up season 8 of NCIS and seasons 11 and 12 of E.R. We might even eat out. Hoping the rain stops before we get there.

  34. I thought I would march because I needed the exercise.

  35. J/L does have the best drawer so far...

    ReplyDelete
  36. J/L, My boys didn't get the powder for me. One of them got it as a gag gift from one of his goofy friends. He just left it here when he moved out and I never got rid of it. It does have a pic of a baboon with a very red butt.

  37. Is anyone having trouble with Facebook? When I log in I get partial status' of all my friends and I can't get into any other pages.

    ReplyDelete
  38. SacBarb I'm not having anyn FB trouble.

  39. Home from the mall. We got the DVD's and two new pairs of shoes for me.
We had a hamburger at "The Apple Tree".

  40. Tango and Tia were so happy to see me. It's a long time since I have been away from them for 4 hours.
I am not tired at all. Jack is. I wonder if it's because he was pushing the wheel chair. I hate riding in it but we haven't a hydraulic lift yet for the scooter so it's quite a job getting it into the Explorer. The wheel chair is easier. We will have one installed before we do our Christmas shopping.

  41. Barb - I have another drawer that has many half used candles. Can I send them your way?

    ReplyDelete
  42. #50 - I am off to see what has happened on my farms while I was away.
Barb, I have trouble some days on Facebook but it's fine today. It is most annoying isn't it?

Have a great Friday night everyone.

  43. Tinka It sounds like you had a very productive and enjoyable day at the mall.
