This Night Owl Blog has given so much!
It is a fun place, we don't bash and we have fun being "tedious"!
We offer advice, give love, lots of free food and an open forum which can be about anything that is important, thought provoking or just plain silly.
And sometimes we just March (some to different drummers, but all together). :)
It is not about a single person, it is about all the people on any given day blended together.....Goldie!
Good Morning Lynn - Glad to read that you are feeling much better. Good point about not trying this trick on men. The instigator of the joke was probably worried about men having heart attacks.
26 years ago on this day the space shuttle Challenger broke apart 73 seconds into its flight at 11:38am EST leading to the deaths of its seven crew members...
Michael J. Smith, Dick Scobee, Ronald McNair, Ellison Onizuka, Christa McAuliffe, Gregory Jarvis, and Judith Resnik.
I watched this live...thinking that the rocket boosters, as they broke away was the shuttle and that the crew was safe...
This was one of those days like when Kennedy was shot...and 911...when everyone was just frozen by what they were seeing and feeling...
I hope we never have another event that makes us feel that helpless...
Michael - I remember that day as if it were yesterday. I was teaching at a small school and we were all gathered in the library to watch the launching because for the first time there was a teacher on board. Christa was supposed to teach two lessons and we had plans to watch that too. I will never forget the look on Christa's mother's face when she finally realized something had gone wrong. It took a few minutes before anyone on the ground knew for sure it had blown up. I felt so sick but didn't want the children to get upset. They didn't understand what happened and we didn't really explain. We went back to our classrooms as if nothing had happened. We went home at noon that day because of the snow. I got home to discover my pet rabbit dead and cold. That didn't help my day much. I turned on the TV and watched it over and over again. I don't know how many times all the channels showed the accident but for some reason everyone kept watching. Yes Michael it was day like November 22, 1963 and September 11, 2001 that will stay etched in our memories forever.
LynnD Men probably wouldn't react as dramatically to a dead body. That's my guess. I don't think I'd react that much either but a bad word or two might be uttered.
Tinka Mardi Gras would be fun. I have great memories of when my husband and I took my mother with us for a week-long Mississippi River cruise and we spent a couple of days in New Orleans during Mardi Gras. Good times!
MICHAEL...I too rememmber that day as if it were yesterday.
I was working as a Sales Rep in Allentown and had been back in Cleveland for a meeting. I had brought the other rep with me and we were on the turnpike returning to ALlentown. We had been chatting away when the tragedy was reported on the radio. I was stunned and shocked and so saddened. I was trying to absorb what we just heard. After a while he asked me why I was so quiet. WTF? I kinda went off on him and from that moment on, he was no longer a friend, just a co-worker. I couldn't be friends with someone so insensitive.
Delete was mine. My comment from 2:24 EST suddenly posted again. Voo Doo?
Hi Just_Lin - I have never been to Mardi Gras. I had plans to go and they got cancelled when I got sick. I doubt if I could ever get Jack to go. He hates crowds.
I had a friend...Linda Decker...who is a teacher in the Kline school district in Houston who tried really hard to be the "teacher in space" on the Challenger. There were parties and what-not and I had bought her a "space shuttle handbook"...
Of course Linda was not chosen but she and her partner Martha went to Florida for the launch...it was terrible for Linda...
Then in Feb of 2003 the Space Shuttle Columbia disintegrated over Texas. I was exiting North Park Mall and the valet at Neimans who brought my car told me what was happening. I noticed a small group standing by a wall looking at the sky...I joined them for about 20 minutes or so...all I could think was that I had to get to a television....then I saw the videos of it streaking across the sky.
And as bad as it was....it didn't have the same impact on me that the Challenger did...
MICHAEL...I remember that day as well. I was at the Home Show and was so tired of walking around looking at all the home improvements I wanted to make and couldn't afford! I ditched my friends and went to the snack bar area to have a DC and they had TV's on there. I looked and watched and really didn't believe what I was seeing. I asked some people if that was really happening and they said it was. I was shocked and saddened. I found my friends and we watched for a while then had to just go home.
Now I really need to get out of the house and divert my thougts.
Hi Everyone---yes, that was a very sad day. I too remember what I was doing that day. Sad times.
Michael, I think I would have for sure made a sound or two if I was in that elevator. Funny reactions and I would not have picked up the teeth!!! Thanks for the fun blog today.
We r going to see Red Tails with another couple this afternoon. I believe it is a true story and looks good with Cuba Gooding in it We will then go have some dinner and visit. Should be fun plus r weather is very nice
MICHAEL: That was a funny video! It wouldn't be funny to me if it was me they were pranking tho..because I know I'd scream..and probably faint..I'm not good with 'GOTCHA!!' jokes..not at all..
TINA: Both you and George are just gorgeous today!
LYNN: I think a man would have punched 'em..lol..
TINKA: Not voodoo!!! ;D
MO: Yay!! The sunshine finally got there!! :)
DI: Enjoy the movie, dinner and time with friends..sounds like a perfect evening!
MICHAEL: I remember the Challenger explosion too..I was an A.M. at a drugstore and one of the cashiers wanted to watch the launch on the TV's we had for sale there. I hate to say it..but at that point..most of us were kind of over the space shuttle launches..they had become rather routine. I turned on the TV..and the customers and employees stopped to watch..we all stood there stunned when the shuttle exploded..I couldn't even move..it was absolutely horrific. Very, very sad day..I won't ever forget it. From that day forward..whenever I did watch a launch..I'd hold my breath when they said "Go with throttle up.."
J/LIN: I would never go on an ocean cruise..but a Mississippi River cruise sounds like fun!!
I got a recumbent bike for Christmas..Randy finally got it put together and I'm riding it every night. I started out going 2 miles..and I'm up to 4 1/2..the thing that's funny is that when I hit the 3 mile mark..Nikki starts biting and pawing at my feet as if to say "That's enough..you'll never make it.." LOL!!
btw..I named my bike Hugh..that way I want to climb on.. ;D
Hi Zona - That recumbent bike sounds great. Don't overdo it on your first day or you will be in such pain I will have to fly down and comfort you. I have a stationary bike but I don't use it anymore. It's not good for my condition. When I had my very first computer it was so slow I would ride my bike while the e-mails downloaded. I can't believe how much computers have changed since the 90's.
Michael - I wonder why too. I hardly remember the 2003 accident. I hope it isn't because we are becoming complacent about such things. I can't remember where I was when it happened.
Zona - We had stopped watching launches too. They were no longer "must see" TV. To us the Challenger was different because it was the first time a teacher was aboard. I think most schools in Canada and the U.S watched that one.
Dianne - Thanks for the review. I think I will wait for the DVD. It's a long time since the cost of a movie here was $4.00. There also used to be a children's rate and senior rate. The first time I took the grandchildren to the movies with my gold card, I asked for 2 children and l senior. That's when I was told all rates were the same, $9.50 each. We had gone out for dinner first and I bought popcorn and pop at the theatre. I was amazed at how much the evening cost me. The only times that the grandkids went to the movies were with me. It was too expensive for Cara and Doug to take them. It's a shame because movie night for the family is such a fun time.
Michael - Wasn't it great that Linda wasn't chosen for the flight? It's an example of Garth Brooks' song, "Thank God for unanswered prayers". I know you don't believe that but I do. I guess we will agree to disagree on that one.
Good Moaning back at you Tina!
ReplyDeleteNote to self always go to the bathroom before I go to my hairdresser! Yikes! lol
Michael while that was funny in spots,I kept thinking interesting that they did not pull this prank on men. hmmmm
Talked to Sacbarb yesterday before she went home and she sounded so good!
Waving at everyone!
Good Morning Tina - How gorgeous you look today.
ReplyDeletelol Lynn...there are 1000 sexist answers to that that would be funny in spots...
ReplyDeletebut I want to live :)
It would be funny to see men's reactions to that man falling out of his casket...
ReplyDeleteHi Tinka....how u durrin'?
ReplyDeleteGood Morning Lynn - Glad to read that you are feeling much better.
ReplyDeleteGood point about not trying this trick on men. The instigator of the joke was probably worried about men having heart attacks.
Hi Michael - I am doing OK. My spirits will lift when we turn the calendar to February. How are you doing?
ReplyDeleteor the men were all at work....ijs
ReplyDeleteThis is the second day in a row when the morning blog could give me nightmares. If that happened to me they would be calling 911.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe I wrote that...
ReplyDeleteDoin' fine deep in the heart of Texas...looking forward to Visual Mardi Gras!!
Michael - Your avatar is making my little brown owl blush. I am glad you at least he left his tighty whiteys on. If he hadn't I would be blushing.
ReplyDeleteBreakfast time. Be back later. No big plans for today.
ReplyDeleteBehave all you little owls out there.
Michael - Maybe all the owls should go to Mardi Gras some year. That would be fun.

ReplyDeleteYes, what a tragedy when the Challenger blew apart. Horrible, horrible day.

It is cold and windy here. I has been snowing and then I just looked out the window and saw a strange phenom...SUNSHINE!!
ReplyDeleteMaybe I will get dressed and venture out. Or maybe not!

ReplyDeleteGood Afternoon Maureen - It's ten past noon here.
ReplyDeleteHow could anybody not be affected by such a tragedy? I don't think I would like to be friends with him either. I like sensitive men.

ReplyDeletespeaking of launches....
ReplyDeleteNewt Gingrich said that if elected he will have a colony built on the moon by the end of his second term...lol (2nd term?)
Ron Paul said we are too broke to go to the moon but he does sometimes think that we might need to send "some" politicians to the moon....
:o
The movie was really good. Two good movies in a week. That's pretty good odds. It is getting so expensive for even a senior rate at 4:00!!
ReplyDeleteSo I would recommend both movies.
lol at senior rate....wait...is that me too?
ReplyDeletebut how much is it for Senior-itas??
ReplyDeleteha hahaha... snort

Time for bed. Hugs for everyone especially Barb. So happy you are home.
