~ Archbishop Tutu Speaks at Gonzaga University Commencement ~

by Tina~in_ut

SPOKANE, Wash. – Nobel Laureate Desmond Tutu told Gonzaga University graduates Sunday (May 13) to dream, reject cynicism, and collaborate with God to create a gentler and more equitable world.

I know this is long, but it's SO worth listening to. He's an amazing speaker with a beautiful message~

  2. When Tina sent me the announcement that Desmond Tutu would be honored and giving the commencement address at Gonzaga I was confused.

Desmond Tutu is one of my heroes and certainly doesn't share the same beliefs of the Catholic Church. He teaches love and inclusion and equality for all. Not the anti gay baloney that El Pope-O spews from his gilded throne and palace in Italy.

And sure enough...alumni and parents protested against his visit by writing letters and circulating petitions to which the students countered with their own petitions. The president of Gonzaga ended the controversy basically by telling those opposed to "suck it!"

The result is this incredible and inspiring address that had me weeping into my hands as Tutu ended his address with what has been called a "stunning emotional flourish."

As a gay man I have to say that all the negativity from the Christian right everyday does occasionally takes it toll...but listening to someone as distinguished and loved the world over....like Desmond Tutu....stick up for you....gives me the strength to carry on in what I believe is the last fight for civil rights in America.

I watched this address live as it happened and I am so happy that Gonzaga posted this video so all can see and hear what a true Christian looks and sounds like...

The hand of God is truly on this mans shoulder.

  5. It's a beautiful day here today. It's already almost 80 but there is a lovely breeze.

I was thinking of going to the library (duh!)getting a book and sitting in their reading garden for a while. But, I'm really tired and will probably sleep in their reading garden!

And I will go in and listen to the vid.
