Facebook/Twitter for the over 60 crowd

by Dianne

When I bought my Blackberry, I thought about the 30-year business I ran with 1800 employees, all without a cell phone that plays music, takes videos, pictures and communicates with Facebook and Twitter.

I signed up under duress for Twitter and Facebook, so my seven kids, their spouses, my 13 grand kids and 2 great grand kids could communicate with me in the modern way. I figured I could handle something as simple as Twitter with only 140 characters of space.

My phone was beeping every three minutes with the details of everything except the bowel movements of the entire next generation. I am not ready to live like this.
I now keep my cell phone in the garage in my golf bag.

The kids bought me a GPS for my last birthday because they say I get lost every now and then going over to the grocery store or library. I keep that in a box under my tool bench with the Blue tooth phone [it's red, not blue] I am supposed to use when I drive. I wore it once and was standing in line at Barnes and Noble talking to my wife and everyone in the nearest 50 yards was glaring at me. I had to take my hearing aid out to use it, and I got a little loud.

I mean the GPS looked pretty smart on my dash board, but the lady inside that gadget was the most annoying, rudest person I had run into in a long time. Every 10 minutes, she would sarcastically say, "Re-calc-u-lating." You would think that she could be nicer. It was like she could barely tolerate me. She would let go with a deep sigh and then tell me to make a U-turn at the next light. Then if I made a right turn instead . . .well, it was not a good relationship...

When I get really lost now, I call my wife and tell her the name of the cross streets and while she is starting to develop the same tone as Gypsy, the GPS lady, at least she loves me.

To be perfectly frank, I am still trying to learn how
to use the cordless phones in our house. We have had them for 4 years, but I still haven't figured out how I lose three phones all at once and have to run around digging under chair cushions, checking bathrooms, and the dirty laundry baskets when the phone rings.

The world is just getting too complex for me.
They even mess me up every time I go to the grocery store. You would think they could settle on something themselves but this sudden "Paper or Plastic?" every time I check out just knocks me for a loop. I bought some of those cloth reusable bags to avoid looking confused, but I never remember to take them with me.

Now I toss it back to them. When they ask me, "Paper or plastic?" I just say, "Doesn't matter to me. I am bi-sacksual." Then it's their turn to stare at me with a blank look.
I was recently asked if I tweet. I answered, "No, but I do fart a lot."

We senior citizens don't need any more gadgets.
The TV remote and the garage door remote are about all we can handle.

  2. Dianne I must admit that I resisted getting a cell phone or a computer for the longest time. Now I use both constantly, it seems. I have a GPS app on my phone and I LOVE IT!

  3. SacBarb According to my window thermometer, it is nearly 80 here. It must be really hot where you are. I may be meeting my daughter in Vegas in early June when she has business there. I'll spend all my time in the air conditioning.

  4. J/L, I don't know how hot it was here today, but I finally turned on the A/C.

  6. May in Sac is bike month. Starting today there will be a lot of events that will encourage people to use bikes as a major form of transportation. Lots of free give-aways and other incentives.

  7. Barb It's going to be another beautiful day here but I don't think it will be as hot as yesterday. I don't think I've ridden a bike as an adult. I'd probably kill myself at this point.

I got my nails done yesterday and they sure needed it. I had every intention of going to Curves and exercising but it just seemed too hot to do that. I did go grocery shopping and played with the dog. I made myself a nice dinner and that was about it for the day. I lead such an exciting life. LOL

  9. SLIN - I love the GPS on my phone!! I'm going to dinner with GOLDIE on Monday and she asked me if I knew where the restaurant was, and I told her I'd figure it out. My GPS has never led me the wrong way!

  13. Good morning, HOoters! It's another beautiful day here, unfortunately. I sure wish we had rain in the forecast. Yesterday evening at about 7:00, I watered the front lawn with a hose and felt guilty doing it. Pretty soon there will be nothing to water but dirt and some weeds. At least the weeds are green now.

  14. HOdi I'm glad you enjoyed your movie. Elizabeth and I are going to go see "Monkey Kingdom" on Wednesday after lunch at Benihana. I can hardly wait.

  15. Jodi, glad you liked the movie. I thought it was really good too plus I loved the bull riding in it, didn't you?

JL, you'll have to let us know about that movie. I've seen the coming attractions but I don't know if I'd really like it or not. You might more than me since you are an animal person.

We had our air on for awhile yesterday. Finally got it fixed. A bug had broken the fan switch!! It was dead in there. Glad we have repair insurance. It would have been $300 but we paid nothing. Now our garage door is sounding funny. It's always something.

Louis and I sat down last night and planned our road trip for the end of June. I'm going to be able to meet up with Beverly in Louisville. We are going to Nashville first and I found a package deal with the hotel and three things we wanted to do. The hotel prices are crazy. I wanted to go to the Grand Ole Opry, take a night and dinner tour of Nashville, and do a lunch riverboat cruise. We will then go see Bev and Louis's daughters for about three days and then to Dayton, Ohio, for Louis to go to an Air Force museum. I don't think I'll be doing that for a whole day. We will be gone about two weeks.

Went to my grandsons baseball game today for two hours. I think baseball is very boring. It's my best way to see the boys though but then the other two weren't there. It was disappointing to not see them. Oh well......

Louis is at our ex SIL's tonight watching the fight. I'm hanging out at home napping and doing laundry. Exciting!!

Thinking about all of you tonight. I'm going to lunch with Barb in Co on Tuesday. She's going to Nashville for a week the end of May so I'll be interested to see what their plans are going to be then.

  16. Dianne It sounds like you have a fun road trip planned. It will be fun to get together with Bev, too. I watched that fight tonight. I wasn't planning to but then I saw that my dog walking person asked on FB if anyone was going to watch the fight and asked if she could watch, too. I checked into it and decided I wasn't interested enough to pay $100 to watch it but told her I'd be happy to split the cost with her. She thought that was great so she came over here and we watched it together. I already owed her for watching my dog while I was in Oregon so this took $50 off of my bill.
