This Night Owl Blog has given so much!
It is a fun place, we don't bash and we have fun being "tedious"!
We offer advice, give love, lots of free food and an open forum which can be about anything that is important, thought provoking or just plain silly.
And sometimes we just March (some to different drummers, but all together). :)
It is not about a single person, it is about all the people on any given day blended together.....Goldie!
Barb, nope didn't have to pay for the stamp. It slipped right through lol!
Zoie and I got home just as the bad weather hit! I guess there were a lot of accidents out there. The snow turned into ice on the roads! I am glad we are home all nice and toasty.
Mary, i'm glad you didn't have to pay the postage. I got one back today that I sent to Shirley. Said I needrd $.22. I looked up the postage to Canada before I mailed and I put what it said. I'm going to the PO tomorrow and ask about it. I sent three to Canada and only Shirley's came back.
I heard about Adele entering an Adele contest. This was really a good practical joke. It Didn't take long for the other constants to realize she was the real thing.
Well, everyone is gone and things are cleaned up from the kids coming tonight. It ended up being nice and the boys seemed to love their gifts ....Todd and Liane too. My DIL was actually pretty quiet. The kids enjoy each other so much. I wish they could see more of each other. I love hearing them all laughing. They are growing up so much. So..... One Christmas down. Olive Garden delivered and set up and it was really nice. It ended up averaging about $14 per person and that was for two salads, breadsticks, fettuccini, lasagna, and desserts. Well worth it.
Finally our weather is a little better. It was 3 this morning but then the sun came out and it warmed up. Mary, glad you are home safe ...I told you I was sending you some weather. I'll send you the nice weather now.
No darn packages in the mail and I'm waiting for things I need before Christmas.
Dianne, I am missing a few things too. I had to go ahead and send what I had to my Great Niece in Texas and My Great Great Nephew in Tennessee. I am waiting for 2 vid games and a Ninja Turtle game. I still need to get Jim one more thing. His mini laptop is dying so I will check into a new one tomorrow if the roads are good!
Barb, I go to the P.O. and ask for a Canadian stamp. Too bad it came back. It takes a while for it to get there!
Mary. I am going to get International stamps from now on! It will not get there by Christmas, but at least she will get it! Holy cow, lady, you have a great great nephew? That is amazing! I forgot how big your family is and that you have older siblings.
Barb. Tonio is the son of my late brother Tony's daughters, daughter lol!!
I finally got one more UPS pkg today. I bought Jim a tablet with an attachable keyboard. I am hoping it is Jim friendly lol. He still has his flip phone!
Jim and I went out to dinner tonight. It sure was nice not cooking! I will be having Christmas dinner h ere for just a few, so no big panic there! Later.....
Well, I had a surprising and fun day. I got a call this morning from my friend, Jane, asking if I wanted to go to a matinee to see a play in San Francisco with her and two other ladies that I hadn't met before. Well, hell, yeah! Anyway, those 3 plus Jane's son's mother-in-law have season tickets to the plays every year but today the mother-in-law was sick and couldn't go. I'm sorry about that but it was a win for me. We saw "A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder" which was funny and clever and very enjoyable. We then went to an Italian restaurant for dinner. It was a very nice day. I enjoyed the play, the dinner, and the company.
Mary I'm glad you got in before the bad weather hit. Today was beautiful and clear. We were very thankful not to be walking in a downpour into the theater. It was hard to see people wrapped in blankets and sleeping on the cold sidewalk, though.
Barb I also looked up what postage to Shirley's would be. I don't remember what it was but I know I put three forever stamps on it and that was more than enough.
Mary You seem to have a lot of extended family that you buy for. I come from a small family and my cousins and I only exchange cards. Well, some cousins, anyway. I have cousins in Florida that I don't know and we don't even exchange cards.
JL, that is one of the plays on my schedule I think next month. I hadn't heard of it. We saw A Christmas Story the other night. I had Never heard of it. It was cute. So do three forever stamps work to Canada?
Thanks for your cards everyone. Took my granddaughters shopping today and to eat. I dropped them off at a store and searched for parking and waited for them at three stores. It was so crowded. I was glad they had each other to shop with and I was the ride. Tomorrow we go to my uncle and aunts annual Christmas party. I always enjoy going there.
Dianne I'm surprised you never heard of the movie version of A Christmas Story as it has become a holiday favorite on TV. But then, you said you aren't a TV watcher. Love the movie. "You're going to shoot your eye out". LOL
J/L, I looked it up again, but this time I Googled "what is the postage to Canada from the U.S." and it had $1.20. The first time I just looked it up on USPS site and it had $.85. So I put only two stamps. I sent three cards that way and only Shirley's came back. I put it in another envelope and put three stamps on it.
Barb Yes, $1.20 is what I got when I was on USPS site and put what zip code it was coming from and what zip code it was going to. I also entered what the weight of the card and envelope were.
Well, the darn Broncos lost again in the second half. Leading at half time and then lose..irritating!! We will be lucky to make the playoffs. I received my Bronco invoice for them though.
Had a nice time at the Christmas party today....lots of yummy food too. I always enjoy the homade cookies since we don't have any around this house.
JL, I'm surprised I didn't know the Christmas show too. I did know about the lamp but didn't know it was from a movie. I'm slow at discovering shows I think!
Dianne Speaking of cookies, I made sugar cookies tonight in the shapes of Christmas trees, stars and Santa Claus. I usually make trees, stars and bells and I think I'll go back to that again next year. My Santas look like they came from Chernobyl. LOL These are the types of cookies my grandkids like the most so that's why I made them. I also made chocolate chip, peanut butter blossoms, and Spritz cookies as well as a lot of fudge. I do more baking in December than I do the whole rest of the year.
JLin, I would love a good peanut butter recipe! We like ours on the firm side. Seems the ones I make are all too soft! I made the sugar cookie dough tonight. I will roll them out tomorrow. I am going to make my first attempt peanut brittle. Looks easy enough.I may find a way to screw it up lol! I bought a candy thermometer so, fingers crossed!!! My son wants a home made pumpkin pie, so that will be made tomorrow also. Did I say it was going to be an easy Christmas Eve dinner a few comments ago lol!
Raquel and her hubby recently bought their new/old home and asked the family over for Christmas Day dinner. It is a bit far, but I don't want to let her down especially just losing her new FIL and this being her first family gathering in it.
Dianne. I watched the game and cringed at the end!!
Well, my house is quiet tonight. Louis was undefeated except one game in fantasy football and this weekend was the playoff. He lost by four points tonight. He's very competitive. He's kind of moping around. I'm glad the damn thing is over! He takes a little too serious.
Went to lunch with my childhood friend today. She lives a couple of hours away so we meet in the sort of middle. It's been so fun reconnecting after years apart. Our picture is on FB tonight. Tomorrow is a big scary day for me. I go get my hair cut and colored by new hair person! I wonder what color my hair will turn out? I do nails at 9, hair at 1 and finally get permanent bridge at 5:30 after two months. I feel like keeping the temp one since its lasted so long. It's a busy day. Hope it doesn't snow!
I don't ever make cookies anymore. We would just eat them all. My friend Barb makes them for us. I don't miss it either for some reason. I used to do it when the kids were younger. My grandkids will never have fond memories of my cooking :(
Dianne I'm sorry but I had to laugh a little when you wrote that your grandkids will not have fond memories of you cooking. You were kind of on a roll there for a little while weren't you? You were making some dinners. What happened about that? You wouldn't eat all the cookies if you packed them up and put them in the freezer as soon as they were cooled enough. That's what I did. I only ate one cookie and that's because it got broken. I did save a little bit of fudge for myself, though.
I don't understand how the fantasy football thing works. It sounds like Louis got close to winning some money. No wonder he got in a funk when he lost by 4 points.
Mary I'm not a baker but would baking the peanut butter cookies a little longer make them more firm? I don't feel the ones I make are particularly soft. I use a recipe that was the one my mother used. She liked this one because it didn't use so much flour that the peanut butter taste got diminished.
PEANUT BUTTER COOKIES
1 1/2 cup flour 1/2 t baking soda 1/2 cup butter softened 1 cup peanut butter 1/2 cup sugar 1/2 cup brown sugar 1 egg 1 t vanilla
Blend butter and peanut butter. Mix in sugars, egg, and vanilla. Add flour and soda. Roll into balls and roll in granulated sugar. Place on ungreased cookie sheet and press with fork in criss-cross pattern. Bake 10 minutes at 375.
For Peanut Butter Blossom cookies: Roll in sugar and bake on ungreased cookie sheet for 8 minutes. Remove from oven and place one Hershey Kiss on each cookie then bake an additional 2 minutes. Let cool one minute before removing to rack.
Hi. ...JL I will get the old crockpot again soon. Good for you freezing them.
More darn snow coming. Everyone gets so excited about a white Christmas ...not me when you have to drive in it and we have to go up in the mountains a little. Last year the drive home was horrible. It's already white from last week. Still waiting for one thing In the mail. Tracking says it was in Indiana yesterday...it doesn't look good.
J/L, I did not put anything on the tree. It just has lights and I keep having to put the tree skirt back under it. I finally wrapped gifts and now I have something to anchor the skirt down and so far it's all good. I didn't want to put the gifts under too early to give the cats longer to play with them.
Dianne, I have made those same peanut butter blossom cookies, but I used a box PB cookie mix and the kisses. Easy peasy! I think I ate one kiss for every two I unwrapped! This is why I don't bake anymore! I have no will power!
I am cooking tomorrow and Christmas Day. I got all the groceries yesterday, including the prime rib, and it cost $370. Of course the meat was almost half of that. My sister gave me $80 toward it because that entitles her to some of the left-overs. I always split the left-overs among everyone anyway, but I accepted her money. So tomorrow I will start the clam sauce about 11:00am in the crock pot and let it cook until we eat, around 6:00. There will be eight of us tomorrow and seven on Friday.
Merry Christmas to you all. I may not be back until Saturday.
Dianne I hope you have a safe and easy drive. White Christmases are beautiful to look at but I wouldn't want to drive in it, either. Good luck on getting that last package in time. Maybe it will be a Christmas miracle. :)
Barb Those kitties probably think the tree, tree skirt, and presents are all for them. LOL
That's good that your sister chipped in on the cost of holiday dinners, especially since you are doing all the work. I hope you aren't being too hard on your back. Don't forget you are still in the recovery stage.
Tonight I will be home with my dog and probably watching movies and I've decided to make myself some beef stew for dinner. I have everything done that needs to be done for Christmas. On Christmas morning the dog and I will go to my daughter's in American Canyon. It looks like it won't be raining so I am very glad of that.
Merry Christmas to all the owls. I hope everyone has a lovely and happy Christmas.
Sounds like you have you day planned, JL. I hope you have a great time at your daughters tomorrow. So far no snow!! Actually quite nice today.
Barb, I agree with JL....don't overdue. Get the others to help you. Hope you days are nice.
We went for Chinese dinner tonight. My package came today so I'm m all wrapped and ready to go tomorrow. Louis and I will do our Christmas shortly. So much prep and over so quick. I'm sure glad I wasn't at the grocery store or Walmart today., those parking lots were full.
Merry Christmas to you all...Mary, Barb, Jl, Jodi, Barb in Co and any other owl looking in today.
I hope you all had a nice Christmas. Mine was nice, though exhausting. Today I just vegged all day with the kitties. They were a little neglected the past two days, which is OK with Tara, but Mellie needed a lot of lovin' today. She spent most of the day on my lap or laying beside me when I took a nap and I don't mind it at all. :) It's 10pm and I am going to bed. Good night and sweet dreams to you all.
