Birch or Beech?

by Dianne

Two tall trees, a birch and a beech, are growing in the woods. A smaller tree begins to grow between them, and the beech says to the birch, 'Is that tree a son of a beech or a son of a birch?'

The birch says he cannot tell, but just then a woodpecker lands on the sapling.

The birch says, 'Woodpecker, you are a tree expert. Can you tell if that tree is a son of a beech or a son of a birch?'

The woodpecker takes a taste of the small tree and replies, 'It is neither a son of a beech nor a son of a birch.  It is, however, the best piece of ash I have ever poked my pecker into.'

  1. Oh Dianne tsk tsk LOL!! Cracked me up!!
It is miserably cold here. They predicted light snow, maybe 2-3 ". We surpassed that hours ago! I was out early shoveling so Zoie could do her business when she got up (lazy today). Well, I had to go out and shovel a few more inches again and it is still coming down! Supposed to end by 5 or 6:00. We will see!

Crazy Jim and his buddy took off for the Casino. Oh well, he would have just been miserable and bored sitting in his chair all day ( kind of like ALWAY! LOL)

My son Matthew said the roads were awful this morning on his bus rout. He was behind by 15 minutes. He hates making the kids wait at bus stops, but safety is #1.

  2. Well, it finally quit snowing!
No word on my SIL. My BIL couldn't make it to the hospital due to the weather.
    Hoping to hear something today.

SacBarb, I appreciate all prayers for SIL. Thanks.
You are right. My eye drop container is tiny! What I really hate is that I can't see hope much I have used with the bottle. It is hard to keep track for refilling RX.
Can I borrow Chad for Thanksgiving lol!

JustLin, My traveling group rarely goes to the same resort, unless they are really impressed with it. With all the dangerous things going on, I think they wanted a safer place to go.
Hope you feel better by now. I LOL, @ "staying ugly!"

Dianne, I hope all your laundry is washed and put away! I do it as soon as I walk in the door! You never know what lurks in those clothes lol!

  3. Hi....lucky me...Louis did all the laundry for us! He did it right away too. That was so nice. We already have another darn load. I’m trying to get semi-packed. Mary, we are leaving Tuesday to meet two of my cousins (Judy and Gordon) in Branson for a few days ANDY then to Hot Springs, Arkansas, and then to Houston for Thanksgiving returning the 4th. A week from today I’ll be seeing The Texas Tenors ...yippee! I can’t wait. They were just voted the number one group of Branson. We will be spending the holiday with the same group as the cruise.

Mary, I have to get a nose spray for bedtime for $95 out of pocket with ins too. It’s a very tiny bottle for a month. Do hope your SIL gets better soon. Sound like your weather is not fun. We r in the high 60’s with light snow predicted for Saturday. Hopefully it will be nice Tuesday.

JL, that’s nice your daughter is coming for Christmas. Wow, that’s a lot to board your dog. Does your brother ever come to your place? You will have lots of leftovers after thanksgiving. I’d be happy with stuffing and pumpkin pie for dinner.

BaRb, glad your eyes are better. If you are like me, you will end up with readers all over the house. I even have a pair in the bathroom, every purse, etc. I’ve become very dependent on them. I’ve even got some reader sunglasses from Costco.
How nice to have Chad cook thanksgiving.

I gained 8 pounds on the cruise. Ww. lady said don’t worry, you’ll get it off next week. I won’t be there next week...on vacation. eating again!

  4. Did any of you watch the CMA awards show last night. It was so good. They had the older singers (women) and new ones in a number a couple of times. I always love that show every year

  6. Dianne Wow! It seems like you were barely home and now you are off on more travels so soon. How nice of Louis to take on the chore of doing laundry.

When my mother was still alive, she and my brother would drive up here for the week during Christmas. Now, though, my brother has an odd little, slightly still feral, little cat that he's very attached to. He found her when she was only about a month old. Anyway, she is not a candidate for boarding plus my brother is having some health issues right now. He will end up with surgery, maybe next year, and I will go down there to give him a hand during that time. I've discussed it with my daughter and she will come down here with her dogs and live at this house while I'm at my brother's. It's so fun getting old. NOT!

  7. Mary I hope you are staying safe and warm. Today it is beautiful here but it was very foggy on Saturday. I hope you are very careful when you have to drive in the snowy weather. Does Jim have to go very far to get to the casino?

I went grocery shopping this weekend and my shopping list included a bunch of stuff to make a particular chicken dinner. As I was checking out, I realized I forgot to get the chicken! Unfortunately, my shopping list was only in my head and not on paper. Although, having it on paper is no guarantee, either. LOL

Is there any news on your SIL?

  8. Barb I hope your eyes are noticeably better, now.

Nothing much going on here. Saturday I went to a birthday party across the street for little Autumn who turned 5. There were so many cute little kids of all ages and their parents. And great food, too. Some darling babies there, too, including Autumn's little brother, Jake, who is 10 months old now. What a flirt he is! Anyway, I was there for over 2 hours and just being around all that activity wore me out. LOL It was fun, though. Yesterday I just stayed home and did laundry and housework. What an exciting life!

I just saw on the news that PG&E may be shutting off power again up in the Napa/Sonoma area. OMG! I would be so upset if I lived up there.

  9. JustLin. We warmed up to 32* today! Hopefully the snow will melt so we can rake! Our red Maple leaves still have a lot to drop! Our farmers were out today trying to finish harvesting their corn. LOL, on forgetting the chicken. That is sooo me!!

Dianne, I would fall over dead if Jim ever did laundry lol. He has no idea how to run the washer, or dryer! Forget the dish washer!

Barb,I hope you are seeing ok. I got a new prescription and am seeing so much better!
I will put of the surgery til next year, unless I have problems.

Raquel and her baby visited on Saturday. Her hubby was hunting and mine was at the Casino. Raquel asked if I still had any of my jewelry making tools ,beads, etc. She was thinking of taking up the craft. I told I still had most of it and offered it to her. It took me a few hours to find, clean and organize it before she got here!
I had thought of getting rid of it many times, but kept putting it off! I am glad it will be going to a good home lol!!
It was so much fun having the baby here! She found my bedroom and fell in love with Zoire's stair steps. She went up and down them and giggled the whole time she was here!

Today I went to my last knee appointment. I still have numbness and pain, but nothing he can really do about that. Said it could be another year before it heals up. He offered more therapy, but I declined. I already do all the exercises I was given. Motrin is my best friend! I wasn't encouraging when I asked about CBD products. He is
not satisfied with the way it is not regulated.
It was an early morning appt. I rarely do mornings, but it was the only one I could get. I was in the patient room for almost an hour, waiting in a pair of paper shorts! I finally peeked out the door and asked for a blanket! The Dr showed up just about the same time as the blanket lol! I know I am retired, but my time is still valuable! Hrumf! LOL!!

My SIL has been moved to a long term hospital. She is not breathing on her own yet. They are slowly weening from the machine. She is not fully alert. To Jim's credit, he has been up to see her many times, going tomorrow. I used to scold him when he would drive to Ionia for business or appts, and never stop to visit her, when he would practically drive by her house! Now he drives 40 miles to see her in the hospital! Go figure!

  10. Hi....still in Branson. Cold and rainy. Going to see Johnny Mathis tonight! We’re going to see if we can get into Paula deans for lunch. Having great time and saw Texas tenoRs yesterday. (.sigh). It’s so fun here and I .wish we were staying longer.

  11. Hi Ladies. I am dictating this to my phone. This is so much easier than typing. My eyes are getting better every day but it’s still blurry.
Mary, I am so sorry about your sister-in-law. I am still praying for her and her family. It was so nice of you to give Raquel your jewelry making tools and supplies. Maybe she’ll make you something. I have sooo much paper craft supplies, I could rival Michael’s or Joann’s. I’m sorry your knee is still giving you pain. You went through the surgery to alleviate that, so what happened? Did You already explain it and I missed it?
Dianne, Wow! You are quite the traveler. How nice of Louis to do the laundry for you. Maybe he’ll do it again after this trip. You and the Tenors should be BFF’s by now and you should get a free ticket to their show!
J/L, The Jens are coming over this weekend and we hope to finish our Christmas cards. If we don’t, we plan to work on them on Monday. It’s getting late!

  12. Barb Well that was clever of you to dictate into your phone. I'm always sitting at my computer when I come on the blog but maybe I'll try it your way one of these days. It would definitely be easier than typing on the phone and I guess you don't have stupid auto-correct to mess things up.

My daughter will be coming down for Christmas and we are trying to figure out what we are doing for food on that day. When she lived in American Canyon, we'd go to the Silverado Resort in Napa for their Christmas buffet which is fabulous. Now it isn't feasible as it
is 1 1/2 hours away and she doesn't think her chihuahua could last stuck in the house without peeing for as long as it all would take. The closest thing we can find is the buffet at Top of the Mark in S.F. but it's more than twice the money of the Silverado which rubs me the wrong way. We may end up going to a very nice steak house in San Mateo. One thing I do know is that I don't want to cook. If we end up going to the steak house, it will be during dinner hours so I'd put together some kind of casual brunch for us at home. I think I could handle that.

  13. Mary I believe it's a maple tree that I have in my front yard and it still has more leaves to drop, too. I'm sure my neighbors down the street don't appreciate it when the wind blows and the leaves end up flying down the street into their yards. Oh, well. The fall colors look pretty so I guess that's the price of beauty. LOL Fortunately, I don't have to rake as I have a gardener who comes twice a month and he blows the leaves into piles then takes them away.

I hope you are staying warm and dry. We might actually have a little rain on Tuesday or Wednesday and we are really hoping we do. It would be such a treat to listen to the rain. We need it badly. I noticed the other day that one of the reasons I seem to enjoy watching British shows so much is that sometimes it is raining. I miss having a good rain.

  14. Dianne How was Johnny Mathis? As a teenager, I had some of his albums and would play them over and over. I got to see him twice; once when I was in my late teens and still living in Southern California and again in San Francisco when I was an adult. Love Johnny! He could sing the National Anthem and make it sound romantic.

It sounds like your trip has been a great success. Now you get to plan your next one.

The other night I went with my friends to see "Ford v Ferrari" with Matt Damon and Christian Bale. It was a very good true story and the kind of movie that guys like, too.

  15. Dianne, I loved Johnny Mathis when I was younger, but I haven’t heard much about him for a long time. How was the show? Has his voice held up?

  16. J/L, well, the Jens and I almost finished our Christmas cards. We worked all weekend and today and just had a little more to do when we all ran out of steam. So we all took our share of finished cards and divided up the rest of the unfinished cards and elements to finish at our homes. We made 225 cards and each took 28 unfinished ones home.
We had a sad day yesterday. Chad’s cat, Niko, passed over the Rainbow Bridge. Chad went to Apple Hill with Arch and his family and was gone all day. About 3:30 I noticed I hadn’t seen Niko for quite a while, so I went to check on him and found him in the family room, already gone. Jenn and I wrapped him in a baby blanket I use in the cat carrier. Chad got home about 6:30 and I had to tell him. I didn’t want to text him or call him while he was at Apple Hill because at that point there was nothing he could do. Niko was almost 19 years old and has gotten very frail in the past few months. We’ll miss him.

  17. Mary, The cataract surgery wasn’t bad at all. Both eyes took about 15 minutes each. I’m still healing and my vision is still a little blurry, but better every day. I was told it takes about a month to heal. I am only using one kind of drops now and twice a day this week. Next week, it will be only once a day and then I’ll be done.

  18. Hi....Johnny Mathis was really good. He can still hit those high notes and hold them. He sang his most popular songs and then half Christmas too. He’s 84 and looks good. He was with a huge orchestra too. His songs bring back lots of memories. The stage was beautifully decorated for Christmas. We are in Hot Springs, Arkansas, the last two nights. The weather here is very nice. We went around the shops today and bought a few things!l, we did get into Paula Deens place the Other day. The Food was great...family style ,and dessert. A cute gift shop attached. The Texas tenors were fabulous as usual. I got to sing a note with them too.

I will get back to this in am as I’m falling asleep as I type. Good night

  19. I am so heartbroken. My friends son passed away this morning.
I was at the groomers when she called and I had forgotten my phone. Probably a good thing, because I would have had trouble driving home. Jim was on his way to the Casino and Matthew on his way back to his afternoon bus route.
I decided not to call Jim. He and I visited Fred,(our friend's son)last week. I didn't want to take the chance that he would not be able to concentrate while driving, so I will wait until he gets home. Fred was Matthew's age. He has had many heart surgeries and it looked like he was doing good until this morning.
I have cried my eyes out. He always had such a big smile for me and a huge hug. I can't believe I will never see that smile again :(.
Sorry to bring you gals down. I needed to get it out there. Thanks for being here. Love my owls.

  20. So sorry about your friends son. I think you made the right decision regarding jim.
We are in Houston as of tonight. It’s 76 and humid here. Denver is getting a major blizzard and more on Friday. I don’t know if we will ever get home next week. Again Mary, so very sorry.
