Old Hillbilly Farmer

by Dianne

An old hillbilly farmer had a wife who nagged him unmercifully. From morning til night (and sometimes later), she was always complaining about something. The only time he got any relief was when he was out plowing with his old mule. He tried to plow a lot.

One day, when he was out plowing, his wife brought him lunch in the field. He drove the old mule into the shade, sat down on a stump, and began to eat his lunch. Immediately, his wife began pestering him. Complain, nag, nag, it just went on and on.

All of a sudden, the old mule lashed out with both hind feet; caught her smack in the back of the head. Killed her dead on the spot.

At the funeral several days later, the minister noticed something rather odd. When a woman mourner would approach the old farmer, he would listen for a minute, then nod his head in agreement; but when a man mourner approached him, he would listen for a minute, then shake his head in disagreement.

This was so consistent, the minister decided to ask the old farmer about it. So after the funeral, the minister spoke to the old farmer, and asked him why he nodded his head and agreed with the women, but always shook his head and disagreed with all the men.

The old farmer said, “Well, the women would come up and say something about how nice my wife looked, or how pretty her dress was, so I’d nod my head in agreement.”

“And what about the men?” the minister asked.

“They wanted to know if the mule was for sale.”

  2. Dianne I checked Area 51 and I don't see that you asked me any questions but I will give you some answers. LOL

I am also done with my shopping except for some gift cards. As I typed that I realize I have to go into the temporary See's Candy store at the local small shopping center and get some candy to hand out to my hairdresser, nail salon, local small coffee shop I go to, and my gardener. Then I will truly be done. It won't be happening this weekend as it is very stormy. I've already got gifts for the two gals that take my dog out to hike and run.

You sure are traveling a lot and I think that's great. If you can afford it, I think you should go on that short cruise in April. Do it while you and Louis are still able. After all, you can't take it with you.

  3. Barb It sounds like you had a very nice Thanksgiving and I'm so glad that Marie showed up. It was probably good for her to get out of the house and interact with others. It sounds like she's all set with turkey dinners for a while. My Safeway dinner came with whole cranberry sauce which is fine but I really prefer the weird canned jellied one. It's just like mom used to make. LOL Actually, the whole dinner was fine but just not the same as if I did it myself. Then again, in recent years I haven't been doing it like I used to, anyway. If it's just going to be me, I don't care to go through the trouble of homemade stuffing, for one thing.

It's a real challenge to have a tree when you have kitties. Are you doing any holiday decorating? In the last couple of days I've gotten a wreath on the door and put up some decorations inside, including my humble little nativity scene, and put up my little tabletop tree and decorated it. The lights on the little tree and the lights in the garland I have going across the fireplace mantle, really cheers the place up. I of someone who doesn't ever put up a tree but does put lots of little trees (like ceramic, etc.) around her house. It's like she collects them or something. Anyway, her cats don't pay them any mind.

  4. Mary How are you doing? I hope you don't have to go out in your snowy weather to do any shopping. We are having a brief break in our rainy, windy weather. I plan to just be hunkered down for the weekend. I made tamale pie the other night so leftovers are what's for dinner.

I have holiday baking and fudge-making to do but my back has really been bothering me so that may not happen today. I need to get that stuff done early and freeze it as I mail a bunch to my son's family and my brother. I used to take it for granted when my mother did all this. Now that she's gone, I feel like I need to do it. It's a lot of work!

  5. Barb2 I forgot to say thanks for thinking of me for Thanksgiving but I wouldn't have been able to come up there as I had no one to take care of my dog. I was invited to join a friend's family on that day for dinner but declined. I was perfectly happy to do my own thing and have a lazy day.

  6. Hi....I had my back shots again for the last try yesterday. Dr said surgery next step but I’m not doing that any time soon or in the future that I can see at this point. I’m just praying these will work this time. I have my doubts. My arms and hands are covered with red marks from all the fuss yesterday. I had to wear long sleeves today out. Louis and I barely started sorting gifts as he’s busy watching football and I need his help. I’m sure tmrw won’t be any different. I met Barb for lunch today as we had a lot of catching up to do. Tmrw going to bday lunch with a friend..we’re celebrating both our bdays. I had to find her little present tonight too

JL, I give gifts to all those people too. It adds up. Reminds me, I have to find my hairdresser gift for Friday. Too much going on. Your dinner sounded good to me. Your tamale pie sounds yummy too. I’d like to go on that short cruise but I think we’ve spent and are going to be spending a lot coming up. When we go see Louis’s daughters we have to pay for everything...meals, entertainment, etc. needless to say, it doesn’t make me happy as they are both on late 40’s and single. If we didn’t we’d sit in hotel all day. At least I get to have lunch with Beverly while we’re there. We’re going to Nashville before but using our timeshare by ourselves.

Barb, I’ll bet your sister is really enjoying those meals. So, no decorating with cats. Does that make you sad or are you ok without decorating? Do you decorate other things in your place? Our fake tree is very tiny but we decorate the mantle with garland and lights and hang the kids and our stockings.

Mary....cute picture of you with Santa today. I may have to come looking for you soon.

  7. Dianne, we aren’t putting up a tree, but I have lots of other decorations I am putting around. I have double doors for the front door and I have homemade wreaths that go up every year. I also have two ceramic trees. One made by my Godmother and the other made by my Godchild (Bob’s cousin). The cats don’t bother them. I also decorate the fireplace. It doesn’t have a mantle, but I string a garland across and hang stockings, even though I won’t fill them this year because I won’t be seeing anyone. I have some shopping done, but I still have gift cards to get.

  8. J/L, I don’t usually get gifts for the gardener and Sheenah, but I give them an extra big tip, even though I tip them for each Service. My hair dresser is a Jehovah’s Witness and doesn’t accept gifts for Christmas, but he gets a pretty good tip each time I go, especially when I get the gray colored.

Marie has been feasting on turkey, etc. and really enjoying it. I am trying to convince her to go to Dean’s for Christmas. Not sure she will.

  9. Mary, I loved the pic of you with Santa. You are all bundled up with just your face sticking out! I’m sure glad we don’t have the severe weather you guys get.

I had another follow-up eye doctor appointment to get my new RX for glasses. My right eye is almost healed, but the left eye is taking longer and I have developed a film behind the lens that is called a secondary cataract. 😩. He said if it gets to the point where it’s impairing my vision, it doesn’t require surgery, but just a laser treatment in the office.

  10. JustLin, We have lost all the snow we got last month. So far just flurries and today it's rained all day. I can't seem to get in the Christmas spirit this year. Mailing out cards is helping. I swore not to by any with glitter lol! I am almost done with my shopping. I love when I am given hints and lists.

Dianne. I would love to go on at least one more cruise before I kick the bucket lol!
Our temps have been mild the last few days, but I see they will be dropping soon!
Sorry about your back. Karina tells me she has been having trouble with her neck.I hate when my owls are hurting :(

SacBarb, I wanted Santa to hold Zoie, but for some reason he seemed afraid of her. He said "Woah, I'm not sure about this one!" She never growled at him. He was there specifically for the animals. Weird Santa lol!
Jim has been having trouble with one of his eyes too. His cataract surgery was 2 yrs ago. I will mention what your Dr said. He is not good at return Dr visits. His hearing is getting very bad, but growls when I mention hearing aides. I was apprehensive about mine too, but sure am glad I have them now! It is still hard to hear when in a crowded place. Most people with or without hearing aides have trouble LOL!

I have been on the phone for a couple of weeks to two different county clerk court houses. I have to get my drivers license renewed next week and need to fine my divorce papers. Who keeps that crap lol! My ex passed a few years ago so I can't ask him which county. I originally filed in one county, but he would have non of it. He wanted to be the one to file! Yup, he was like that! Anyway I kind of panicked when the clerk said that my divorce had not gone through! Then I remembered about his wanting to file. It was filed in another county! I sent them an email with all my info. I called today because I hadn't heard back from them. They promised they would get right on it.
I know I can use my passport to get on a plane, but I might as well get my license certified.
My sister in law hasn't improved a whole lot although she has been breathing on her own for a couple of days, through her throat tube. She is paralyzed on her right side.

Time to get back to my cards :)

  11. Mary, I couldn’t find my passport or my marriage license so I had to get another certified copy of my marriage license to prove my last name change. I had a copy, but they wouldn’t accept it without a seal! Santa Barbara county was pretty quick in getting it back to me. I had my old, yellowed, birth certificate, which I’m surprised hasn’t fallen apart by now. I just got the real ID license in the mail yesterday. I’m glad I didn’t have to take the vision test because I just got my new glasses today. Not sure I would have passed it.

  12. J/L, Another sad day here on Monday. Chad’s cat Trinity wasn’t doing well at all. She stopped eating on the weekend and wasn’t moving much. He even gave her some rotisserie chicken from Costco, which she really loved, but she wouldn’t eat it. He took her to the vet and he said it was time. So, it’s pretty quiet around here now with only two cats. I really think Trinity missed Niko, because she went downhill rapidly. She and Niko were about 18 yrars old and Chad had them for about 15 years.

  13. Dianne, Thanks for the postcard. I got it today. I suppose you are all ready for Christmas. I’m pretty set. I am mostly giving gift cards, because no one but Todd and Vicki give me a list anymore. I am waiting for one more gift for Todd from Amazon. I may have to take a second small suitcase to San Diego just for gifts. I gave all my big suitcases away, because I can’t lift anything too heavy and I have learned how to minimize my packing. I have recently gone through all my Christmas decorations and I’m also bringing all the decorations Todd made as a kid. Now that he has a house, he has a place to store stuff.

  14. I have a question for all of you. I have never had a regular housekeeper, only a very occasional one. I now have one that cleans every two weeks. She speaks only Spanish, but has a helper that speaks English as well as Spanish and they both work. What should I give them for Christmas? Should I get them a gift or give them a percentage over what I usually pay them? I am not sure what is appropriate.

  15. SacBarb, How sad about your son's cats. They sure lived a long time. Zoie is 10. I can't imagine not having her around! Doxies can live to be 19. We will both be slowing down at the same rate lol!
As for gifts, I give cash with a card to most. If I have known them for a while I also give a small gift like a box of candy or a gift certificate to their fave restaurant. For younger ones, I find they like certificates from Mc Donalds, Taco Bell, etc.
Money is usually the way to go.
Ugh, I am coming down with a head cold! I have been running around trying to get my Christmas shopping done and wearing myself out. I only have Matthew and Jim left on my list... as usual!
IO need to wrap and send off pkgs to Wash.state,Texas,Tennessee and Montana.
I have 95% of my cards done.
Take care of yourselves...Bah Humbug lol!!

  16. Barb I'm so sorry about the kitty. Both of Chad's kitties lived to be a ripe old age and they were well taken care of and loved. I hope you both find comfort in that. I can't even think about the day that I will lose my dog. I will be a blubbering mess. I tear up just imagining it.

If you get your gifts in time, maybe you can mail them to Todd's house and thereby save room in your suitcase. I still have some gift cards to purchase and I need to start wrapping some gifts. As for your housekeepers, I have no idea but cash is probably the most helpful to them.

  17. Mary This is not a good time to get sick so I hope you can fight off that bug. Give yourself a day of rest so your body can use it's energy to fight against getting sick.

Men are always so hard to shop for, aren't they? A new sweater is a pretty traditional gift and I'm sure would be useful with the kind of weather you get in the winter.

I got my Christmas cards in the mail a couple of days ago so I feel relieved about that. Now I feel pressure about baking. Last night I was decorating tree-shaped sugar cookies and my back is not happy about all the time I spent at the kitchen counter doing that. Now that the frosting as set, I'll put them in the freezer until ready to mail out. I already have Peanut Butter Blossom Cookies in there and a batch of fudge. I have a couple more types of cookies to make. I may give my back a break today. I'm not sure. Most of this stuff needs to get mailed along with gifts.

  18. Dianne How are you doing? I hope those back shots have given you some relief.

My friends and I went to see "Knives Out" the other night. It was a fun who-done-it type of movie. I need to plan a dinner out with another friend next week. I think Monday will probably be our best bet as we are supposed to have a break in the rain that day. It's just wet and foggy today. I'm waiting for the rain to arrive as predicted.

  19. Mary, Do take care of yourself. This is such a bad time of year to get sick. Well anytime is a bad time to be sick really, But it’s just more difficult this time of year because of all the activities and tasks we have to do. Thank you for your condolences. Chad is doing OK about it, it’s just sad because he had them both for about 15 years. That’s the hardest thing about having pets, They just don’t live long enough for us.

  20. J/L, I got your Christmas card yesterday. Thank you. I am always so relieved when I get mine mailed. I was a little late ordering gifts so I probably won’t have time to mail them to SD. It’s not too big a deal to take two smaller suitcases, since I always do curbside check in and I get assistance when I arrive. I may even be able to get everything into one, if I wrap them after I get to SD.

Thank you for the condolences. Chad has told me and Arch he doesn’t want another cat/kitten right now. My two are plenty, for now.

  21. Mary & J/L, Thanks for the gift advice. I don’t know the housekeepers well enough yet to know what they like in terms of a gift card, so I will give them cash. 😸

  22. Hi,,,,well, today was our HOA Christmas brunch and gift exchange. It was nice to acquaint ourselves with the neighbors. We don’t see them much except to wave or at the mailbox. We had a couple of errands to do and then a Barb met us here to help wrap gifts. She and Louis were in the living room and me in the office all wrapping. We had dinner of bbq here before she left. Louis started to turn on football...no no he’d never get done so Christmas music it was ....I have a couple of little things like gift cards to wrap and then done. My friends granddaughter is wrapping at her house to earn money for me. It’s a big help because I buy too much and lots of little things too. We are going to Greeley...1-1/2 hours away for gathering if it doesn’t snow. My friend Kathy and her grandson are riding with us. I picked up a big brownie tray from the bakery that I ordered today.

Barb, so sorry about Chad’s cat. It’s hard after all those years. Are your two missing chads? Ive had my housekeeper for about 15 years and know her likes and dislikes so I buy her gifts. She always seems very pleased. She checks our house inside while we’re on a long trip so I always pick up something for her and my neighbor that keeps an eye on things. I’ll bet you’re looking forward to going to San Diego. Nice weather (although you already have it) and seeing family. I had to take the vision test last year to get my license.

JL, My back shots have given me absolutely no relief. My back is killing me along with my breathing. I don’t know which is worse. We had to walk to last theater yesterday at one end of hall and then bathroom at the end of another end of hall. I thought I was going to die! We
went to see the Mr Rogers movie yesterday and really liked it. It was very different than I expected. It’s worth going to see. I hadn’t heard much about the movie you went to see. I wish I lived by you so I could come have cookies with you. No one makes them anymore although,, when barb left today she said she’d be making us some cookies.

Mary, are you still getting sick? Miserable to get a cold now with so much to do. What are you getting Jim? I got Louis a couple of shirts he won’t want,,a new bronco hat, gift certificate to shooting range and he mentioned a long time ago he’d like a comforter and shams of the broncos so I got it and pats been holding it at her house for me. He will be very surprised. We’re really not supposed to be getting each other anything because of vacations but we always do.

Well, I truly wrote a novel to you all tonight. Btw Barb, I’m still don’t like the Raiders but I love watching your coach’s face during some of the calls. He shows his expressions a lot! Do you like him?

  23. Sorry about the long post..I need to drop by more often! Lol

    ReplyDelete
  24. Mary How are you feeling? I hope you were able to fight off that cold. This is no time to get sick. I hope you were feeling for your birthday. Your son gave you some thoughtful gifts. That was sweet.

Will you be making tamales for Christmas. My son's mother-in-law always made them for the holiday and we were lucky to get some. Now everything is different. She is passed away and my son is divorced and his ex is a biotch. So no tamales for me.

It's raining softly now. I wish it would rain harder so I could hear it. That's my favorite sound in the world. If I could hear it, I'd go back to bed. That's the best!
