A Tale of Two Telescopes

A Tale of Two Telescopes

by Whabbear

Owls, have you heard of the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence (SETI) institute in my hometown of Mountain View? The institute used to be part of NASA until Congress de-funded it back in the 1990s. Today, it is thriving through public donations and public support.

SETI’s biggest benefactor is Paul Allen, the Microsoft billionaire. Allen’s donated over 25 million dollars to built the Allen Telescope Array (ATA), a new suite of radio telescopes that will do radio astronomy and search for signals or broadcasts from extra-terrestrial civilizations.

Last week, I read an article about where in the galaxy they were deciding to aim the ATA to do their first search, and their reasoning was absolutely fascinating (well, at least I thought it was)! They’re going to search in the band around our solar system that’s formed by the ecliptic, the narrow region of the sky that contains our astrological “sun” signs.

Now why on earth (LOL!) would they search there? The answer is associated with another telescope that’s going to be launched into space next year by NASA, not the SETI institute. This remarkable instrument, called Kepler, will aim itself at one section of the sky and monitor about 100,000 stars continuously. Why? Kepler will be searching for tiny periodic dips in these star’s brightness levels that would reveal the presence of an earth-sized planet “transiting”, moving across the face of, the star. Only about 2% of the solar systems around these stars should be oriented right along our line of sight, so that their planets pass directly in front of their stars from our vantage point. If every one of those 2000 stars has an earth-like planet orbiting it, Kepler will discover 2000 earths (in fact, the actual number of earth-like planets is likely to be much smaller than that… just how much smaller is the million dollar research question. If Kepler detects no earth-sized planets
at all, we will have for the first time hard evidence that our home planet is very unusual indeed).

There is pretty good reason to believe that all the planets in other solar systems are like ours, in that they all inhabit a narrow band around their stars. Now suppose alien beings in other star systems have been doing the same thing we are about to do with Kepler, trying to detect transits of Earth-like planets across the stars in their survey area. The only regions in space where they would detect the Earth itself are those aligned with our ecliptic, that is, stars in the direction of Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, or Sagittarius! Accordingly, that’s where the Allen Telescope Array is going to look first!

Stay tuned, owls! If there are any ET civilizations out there that have discovered life-bearing planet Earth through the transit method, they may be phoning us right now!

  1. Whabby...Wow! How cool is that? It's also a little creepy at the same time.

  2. Good Morning SCIRISH..congrats on FIRST!!

WHABBEAR: I'm headed off to bed, and eventhough I've read your blog twice, I think I'll have to read it again when I'm fully awake to really, truly "get it". Suffice it to say, if there are any other Earth like planets out there, I hope the inhabitants just want to teach and learn...not take over and destroy. I know...I watch too many movies.

Have a GREAT day everyone. Stay cool, stay warm, stay dry, stay safe!!! Night!! :)

  3. Good Morning Scirish, Zonababy and Whabbear - How are you today?

  4. Hiya hooters!

I need to re-read the blog from this morning. I've read it once and will do so again after I've had coffee.

Hi Scirish, Zona, Pinkatia and Carol!

Hope everyone has a nice day today!

  5. Well I said Good Morning to Whabbear but obviously he isn't in the nest but his blog is. I will feed my 'children' and I will be back when the nest fills up. I don't want to be here alone. Knowing Bear I bet it's a great blog. I will read it before I go. See you all in a while.

  6. Good morning, Scirish (congrats on 1st!), Zona (goodnight!), Tinka and EBJ!

Wow, Whabbear, what an interesting blog! While it would be so cool to find other life out there, I agree with Zona that it scares me, too. I had no idea that SETI existed!

Thanks for making us think this morning, Whabby!

    Have a great day everyone! It's down to 92 today--a cold front--yippee!

  7. Bear always has such great informative things to see about the universe. It always amazes me to listen to him.

    good to see you again.

I hope Paula is doing well. I have not had a chance to read updates at all.

  8. Good morning, scirish,
    zona, ebj, and Tink.

    Interesting blog Whabby
    Congrats scirish on #1
    G'night Zona

Well now, this is an interesting subject. Whabby, if we do find 'blips' rotating around some of these stars that are being monitored, do you think we will explore them, up close and personal?

I can't help but think that if there is life on other "earth" planets, the inhabitants and basic nature elements would be somewhat different than ours, as we know it.
This would be because the eveloutionism would probably be at a slower, or faster, but definitely
of different result, because we have produced most of our environment here.

I just hope I'm around to see if there really are "little green men" out there.

Also, why are we, as human inhabitants of this particular "earth", so vain to think they may not be there and if they are, why would we be the superior being?

    Makes me go....hmmmmmm.
I just want to be around long enough to know AND to see.

  9. Morning Glories!

    Scrishy got first!

Whabby: I had heard of SETI before as Mr. Lynn D is a Science and SCI FI nut! LOL

Very interesting did not realize this was going on. I have mixed emotions on this. On one hand it will be fascinating to see if they find anything. On the other hand I am just not sure I am ready to find out I may have relatives somewhere out there! LOL Great informative blog as always!

Glynis: Prayers to you and your family today! I am so glad you did get to say your final goodbyes!

So good to see so many in the nest yesterday when I caught up this morning. Welcome back Sandie and DonnaJean, CG!

Carol: I am so glad you are OK what a storm! Worried about the midwest and also all of our friends in WEsconsin. What crazy weather. I am currently wearing polar fleece sweats as it is so stupidly cold right now. I just can't get warm.

I won't be on much today so I am waving at all of you now!

Whabbear, as always you pose thought provoking and informative information. I applaud your enthusiasm and dedication to space. I always smile when I "hear" you speak on the topic. I love passion, even though it is a subject that I don't necessarily keep up with.

  15. Morning again everyone!

I'm done making myself pretty (just in case anyone on those other planets is looking) and am off to the house again...almost done and boy am I gonna have one heck of a celebration when it is!!!

Thanks for the great blog Whabby...btw I have a earth/planets/climate question for you....I vaguely remember from science class how the planets and earths rotation changed the climate drastically making the dinosaurs extinct and at that time there was no man or pollution etc. Could the climate changes we are experiencing today be caused in part by something similar? I am not questioning our need to be "green" but it seems to me that there are more forces at work than just man made Global Warming????

Hope everyone has a wonderful day!

  25. Boy I am hormonally challenged today!

I am having an Aunt Flo visit the second one in 14 days and I have no energy and I am so bitchy.

I just checked my email from yesterday and had one from someone I have known for years. Really like this lady but she keeps sending me Obama propaganda and it is getting on my nerves.

Usually I just delete them but I think I snapped. I emailed her and let her know I am an Obama supporter and would she kindly please quit sending me the propaganda. I also promised not to send her any McCain propaganda. I told her I was happy she is engaged and ready to vote but enough already.

Was that bitchy??? Boy I think this is going to be a very long day!

  28. Good Morning Scirish - Congratulations on being first on the blog today. I have been missing you lately.

Good Morning East Bay J, Sandie, Ronnie, Lynn, Shirley, Joey, Goldie and anyone I missed.

Zona - I hope you have a good sleep.

East Bay - I am having my orange juice with you as you drink your coffee.

Sandie - Wow, down to 92, you must be freezing. (Do I sound jealous because I am? ).

Ronnie - Your post is almost as educating as Whabbear's. Until I got to the line about the little green men I thought it was Bear talking.

Lynn - I won't be on much either. I just found out one of my Japanese students who used to live here is coming on the 16th for a 10 day visit. I have to get all the teddy bears out of her room. She wants the room she had when she lived here 8 years ago. I hope she knows more English now than she did back then.
I am not sure what she is going to do for 10 days but I couldn't say 'no' when she asked if she could visit.

Joey - Hi, I have been missing you. I didn't realize it was Friday the 14th until you mentioned it. I say I am not superstitious but I cancelled Tango's last surgery when I discovered it was Friday 13th. One can't be too careful.

Goldie - I agree with you. I love Bear's passion for science too.

Shirley - Breakfast again. How lovely. I will have biscuits and strawberry jam, tea and a chocolate Slim Fast to go. You are a sweetheart.

Whabbear - Last but never least. Your blogs always fascinate me. You know so much and I learn so much from you. I have always been interested in the stars. I stare at them every night and wonder. If you listen to "Coast to Coast' in the middle of the night there are a lot of people who believe the aliens are all around us now. I don't believe that. But when you look at the night sky and see millions and millions of stars and know that our sun is just one of the stars then I agree with Ronnie. How could our sun be the only one with planets and possibly living creatures on it? It is 'small' of us to think that. Who knows what has happened over the last millions and millions of years to our solar system and to others? I am going to be thinking about this a lot today. Thanks for making us think.

I'll be back when the new owl is posted. Have a great day everyone.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Lynn- I don't think that was "bitchy".

Obviously she feels very passionate about him and she was bursting to share it with everyone.

However, I believe there is a fine line on what and whom you share to.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Whabby your blog is very interesting today, in fact, the Mr. wants to read it when I'm done typing.

I really hope you keep us updated on what happens.

  31. It is about as dark as it can be for 9:45 am outside. I think the heavens are about to open again.
Waders? I am going to need a rowboat!

They put signs out in our neighborhood that they were doing water main flushing! Mr. Goldie called the water dept and asked if they had lost their frigging minds? In a nicer way- but still what moron schedules main flushing in the middle of flooding?????? We happen to have a fire hydrant on our corner lot- so not too excited about them opening it up on saturated ground.

I am having a very hard time getting anything at work done too. I am soooooo ready to leave on vacation that my mind is just gone. Oh well, what I don't do now will be sitting here waiting when I get back.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Goldie- I forgot to mention that I wish you a wonderful & peaceful vacation! :)

  35. Iteach: Thank you and I don't mind passionate debate either. It is the the under current of the messages that are distateful to me. It carries what I consider bigotry thinly veiled. Not about issues. (((Hugs)))

Goldie: Have a great time! I hope you are going somewhere dry! LOL Love that Mr. Goldie called and questioned their sanity about flushing the hydrants!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Ok just checking back before I drag my sorry dragging sagging butt off.

Tinka: I hope your visit is wonderful. What a great honor that she so fondly remembers her time with you!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Goldie: OMG! I just talked to Kim (Lil Ol' Me) In Iowa, and she said the flooding around her town of Jessup is really bad too.

From A51 and before: Sandie and CG: Nice to see you back!

Is this disrupting your travel plans? Hope not!

Good morning, everybody else, and thanks for the positive comments on the blog!

Ronniegirl: Provocative questions, indeed! To you and especially Shirley: Yes, it is amazing that we're alive in the time where these questions will start to be answered! We're lucky!

scirish: There have been several mass extinctions in Earth's long history. The leading theory for the dinosaur extinction is that it was due to a large asteroid hitting the Earth in the Gulf of Mexico 65 million years ago.

The biggest extinction event happened 250 million years ago, and climate change, possibly due to massive outpouring of lava from gigantic volcanic eruptions may have played a role there.

But your basic point - that there are forces that influence just abrupt climate changes - is correct! Analysis of ice samples from Antarctica and Greenland have revealed abrupt climate changes in as little as several decades. And it is poorly understood what triggers the interglacial periods that separate ice ages. We're in one now, it started about 12,000 years ago, and that's about as long as any of the previous interglacials have lasted (I think the last one happened about 90,000 years ago... I need to check on that).

But the point is, it's not clear what triggers an interglacial, or what ends one and plunges us back into the more typical long period of cold and ice advance that's characterized the Earth's climate for the last 1.8 million years.

And we sure don't know how our recent outpouring of greenhouse gases is going to affect our current interglacial's duration!

Thanks for the question! Sorry about the long-winded answer! You've made me late for work! LOL!

    ReplyDelete
  38. I see Whabby has written the blog - I'm off to read it and pray that I understand it!! LMAO!!

  39. Okay - now that I got that out of my system..

  40. Whabby! I LOVE your blog! You are so knowledgeable! One thing that often worries me about finding intelligent life out there (and I do believe it does exist in our huge universe) is how we will treat others. I look at our world today. We are all human beings, and we still can't get along with one another. What happens when we add a mix of another species to the equation?! I think as a human race, we need to get along before we can accept any other being!

    Thats just my thought anyway!

Morning all! I have a busy day of painting ahead.

    Scirish: Congrats on 1 & 2 today!!!

Shirley, thanks for the breakfast today! Hope you are still feeling good! Glad to see you!

Morning to Zona, Tink, EBJ, Sandie, Dreama, Ronnie, Lynn D, Joey, Goldie, iteach, and MEK! (Morning also to Whabby, Shirley, Scirish)!

  46. Good Morning Owls...

Whabbear, thanks for the blog today. I have always thought that we cannot be alone in this universe and wonder who/where and why they are there. I love Paul Allen for having the desire to look and watch and learn. (OK, and for owning the Seattle Seahawks too!)

Wouldn't it be great if there was another livable planet out there? Maybe it isn't as nice as ours and we could send all major criminals there... kinda like Australia used to be for the British. (and then some day it will be a huge tourist spot and we will hop a shuttle there.) Of course, we would really piss off the aliens living there and then they would have to come and destroy us with their lazers. So nevermind.

MEK~ Thanks. I am doing fine. Really. I appreciate your kind thoughts and prayers though. I hope you are well!

Tomorrow is Field Day at my kids' school. Berry is going to be in the dunk tank. How could I NOT be happy knowing that? HA!

  47. Happy Thursday Owls. I am on my way out again, but I want to wish everyone a good day.

Whabby: A fascinating blog as always. I have seen those SETI telescopes in pictures, but I didn't know they were so close. Didn't they use them in a movie with Jodi Foster? I think the name of was 'Contact.' Anyway, I had the same thought as Jennifer, how are we going to accept aliens, when we can't accept each other? And I have mixed feelings about whether I want to be here when/if they arrive.

MEK: I had the same thought...my phone is ringing.

Goldie: Stay dry and have a wonderful time.

Shirley: Thanks for breaky. I'll just have some toast and coffee.

Joey: Is the Mr. still sleeping?

Back to work so Hello to everyone!

  62. I'm thinking today's sweet owl is
    East Bay J.

Ronniegirl I went to MEK's BABB photos, too. :)

    ReplyDelete
  63. OH OH OH - I think I know this one!!

i'm going to guess before I read any of the comments...

I believe this AMAZINGLY BEAUTIFUL owl to be

    EBJ!!!!

    :-)

    ReplyDelete
  64. Okay Gly,,,,you know it's coming----Poor Barry !

    ReplyDelete
  65. EBJ- that is my guess and it is because I am led by the masses (and MEK)...

Thanks again everyone for your warm wishes on my vacation. If I actually get there and they don't close down the interstate later I know that I will love every minute of it!

    ReplyDelete
  66. I am so happy to see that I am in good company with my guess!!

Now, we just have to wait to see who Tina guesses!!

Just Lin - each day does get better, thanks!!

    ReplyDelete
  67. Hi Want! Driving by mid day tomorrow- look for me standing up thru the sunroof waving~~~~

    ReplyDelete
  68. Goldie - i, basically, suck at this guessing game - so I wouldn't really go by what i think...

    :-)

    please drive safely!!

    ReplyDelete
  69. Mek!~ I don't guess....I know~ lol~

EBJ~ i keep forgetting to tell you i love the pinka name you made up~ OH...and how come you don't know that the grad pic is a pic of YOU?!!! :)~

    Scirish~ congrats on first~

Whabby~ what I want to know is....if we find "another earth" out there, will they be lucky enuf to have a Whabby, too? :D (and a nest!)

Goldie~ have fun on vacation~ when do you get back?

    ReplyDelete
  70. Tina, that's a funny thought--little green women blogging about alienopause!

    ReplyDelete
  71. And, of course, little green Whabby and Joey.

    ReplyDelete
  72. sandie~ if they DON'T have alienopause....i'm moving! FOR SURE!!!! :)~

  74. Good Afternoon everyone!

Another great and informative blog by our very own NASA informant, Whabbear! I am not sure though about "real" life out there somewhere. If there is, I sure hope they are friendly, nice people, creatures, or whatever, and not like those in Armageddon or Independence Day!!! I also had to read it twice, science was definitely NOT my best subject!!!

Whoo Hoo to Scirish, #1 today! You go girl.

I don't have a guess yet about the Beautiful HS Senior Of The Day. Maybe I'll just follow the crowd and say EBJ! I will go back and look at the pictures of the 1st BABB before I commit to a guess. I MUST be the only one of the Nester's without MySpace! You all can go sneak looks at everyone's albums!

I'm afraid I flew in too late for Shirley's delicious sounding breakfast, so I am thinking of making a grilled cheese on sourdough with white cheddar, havarti, and swiss. Tomato soup sounds good too, if it were not so darn hot outside! A nice cold Red Tail Pale Ale will go nicely, though!

Goldie, have a wonderful vacation! Anyone else got some cool plans for this summer?

This will be a "staycation" for Miss Laurie and myself. Maybe a couple trips to the Coast to get a break from all the heat, and then get really HOT and go visit my daughter in Sacramento! Lots of movies in nice A/C theatres. That's our plan. Maybe next year a real vacation, like a cruise.

Tomorrow is Friday the 13th. I am not superstitous, but I sure hope nothing more terrible happens like more tornadoes and floods. I am thinking of all of you being inundated by the storms, and sending you my love and prayers!!!

Laurie is still not feeling well, and is in fact taking a nap right now, thank goodness. Each day a bit better.

Have a fantastic Thursday everyone, and I'll fly by later to see what shenanigans I have missed!

    Peace, DJ

  75. Those are my deletes...

Needed to clean up my mess I called posting.

I agree with Tina about it being EBJ.

  76. Yes, just looked at the pics from Bear's BABB party, and I definitely believe that is our own Northern California Beauty, EBJ!!!

    ReplyDelete
  77. I didn't look at Tina's post before I am guessing EBJ because of the picture with her little kitty. I am still moving teddy bears. I will check in later to see if I am right on my own accord this time.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Tinka, if I ever come to stay with you, please keep the teddy bears in the room I would just love them!

  80. Hey HO's!!! Just making a quick post in between storms.

GOLDIE - Enjoy your vacation!!! Could you drop off a batch of potato salad for WANT?!!? Oh.....wait.....I'm sure it wouldn't make it all the way up there!!! Maybe I'll have to hand deliver a batch the next time I go to Minneapolis!!! Hugs and kisses to the grandbabies!!! Remember....plenty of pics!!!

TINA - lol @ your march to 100!!! Oh, I hope you cash in on those coupons soon!!! :P

My vote for today's pic is EBJ!!! Thanks to all that thought it was me......:D

    ReplyDelete
  81. Ok..I was going to say the picture looks like Tina..except for the sweet and innocent look!! I am terrible about guessing all these pictures..sometimes, I even think it is me!!! lol

SHIRLEY: I love seeing your sunshine in the morning. Thanks for all the food. I ate everything as I am still on prednisone...sorry SANDY...that's where all the food went..in my tummy...when is lunch?
I also loved the PMS statement about putting chocolate chips in the omelet..made me laugh! Now I have a question for all of you, I don't have PMS anymore and I am over Menapausee BUT I still have most of those same feelings from time to time..so I wonder what you call that at my age?

LYNND: I don't think you were being a bitch. If you can't tell a friend what you don't want then who can you tell? MEK: Interesting about your friend on the last election...never to hear from them again..hmmm.

WHABBY: Interesting blog today. It just can make you wonder what is out there. This gives a whole new outlook to MATCH.COM!!

I just wanted to say hi to everyone that has posted...RONNIE: Going fishing anytime soon? ZONA: Are you in the pool? Tina...what are you doing again and where are you??? (we didn't get your weather either today!!)

    ReplyDelete
  82. Rushing in and out

Iteach - You are welcome to visit me and if you wish you can stay in the Teddy Bear room. I have no proof of this but I have a strange feeling that they come to life at night. Are you sure you wouldn't want the Guest room?

    ReplyDelete
  83. Scirish:
    Congrats on First!

    Whabby:
Thanks for your blog today, I did find it quite interesting, I had no idea, so I do feel a bit informed now. Your blogs are so different, and I enjoy them!

Thanks for making me feel smarter!

  86. HI Everyone!

Heya, tink, neat about the Japanese visitor! My son made it safely home into Chicago about an hour ago! His friend is fine too.

    Goldie: Have a great vacation!

Whabby: Great post, very interesting. I sure hope that we are *allowed* to know if they find something. Gubberment Cheese might think it is too much for us common folk to wrap our heads around! ;0

    Joey, - U Rock! ;)

    scirish - congrats on first!

Hey Dreama, IBB, iteach, Mek, scirish, zona, ronniegirl, lynn d, shirley, amicus, jodi, EBJ, jennifer, Barb in WA..wow a lot of posters today. I hope I didn't miss anyone and I hope all is well with everyone today.

  87. I am on a caffeine drip using Diet coke today. Besides getting the room ready for Marie (pronounced Mar ee) I have two baseball games, a photo shoot with my computer club, a luncheon with the retired teachers, a birthday tea for Naomi and preparation for Father's Day family picnic on Sunday. Why didn't I anticipate this and get ready earlier? I knew she was coming but I didn't know this soon. I will be popping in and out and may miss some interesting comments. Message them to me please if I miss something really good.

  88. just got back from seeing The Strangers. i was the only...ONLY!!...person in the theater. kinda freaky watching a horror movie all by yourself. now i need to see who everyone is saying the pic is of!

    ReplyDelete
  89. Barb in Wa: I went to see a movie one time and it was only my daughter and I. It wasn't even a scary movie and we were freaking out! I don't know how you managed to stay!

    ReplyDelete
  90. ok...since i still can't tell...i'm going with the group and saying today's hottie is ebj!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  91. bebbi...this is not the first time i have sat in a theater all by my lonesome. but this is the first time it was a scary movie. i don't usually go to scary movies, but i was bored so i decided to give myself a jumpstart and see something that would keep me up until hubby gets home late tonight! and it worked!

i just had a rufus hummingbird come up to the feeder. he is so loud the kitties freak out and run to the window whenever they hear him! so pretty too with his copper colored body and brite red head!

    ReplyDelete
  92. Ohhh...I love hummingbird! When the gladiolas come out that I planted in front of the family room window, we usually get to see a few. They are so beautiful!

I am not a big scary movie person. I spend too much of my time with my eyes closed and my hands over my ears while I hum to really enjoy it. I used to be when I was a teenager but I got burned out on them.

    ReplyDelete
  93. hummingbirds..even,here is more than one..!

    ReplyDelete
  94. sheesh...I can't type today!...not "here is" more than one..I meant "there are" more than one!

Too long a day at work.*sigh*

Whabby...Thanks for your answer, it was something I have been wondering for quite a while. Hope you weren't tooo late for work :)

There is a bath calling my name...will read the rest of the comments later, hope everyone is ok and healthy.

    Hugs to all!!!!

  97. I'm going with the masses and saying EBJ!!

TINKA: How neat that a former student is coming to visit with you!!

Just so you know, I've been making Mr. Z walk VanBuren so that I could afford to fly up to meet you and VIG in the fall. I believe you have invited me to stay in the guest room. I don't want to be pimpin' out my hubby if the room is gonna be occupied when I get there!! ITEACH, you won't mind the Teddy Bear room, will you?? Actually, at the rate Mr. Z charges and the action he's getting, it might be a while. ;)

  98. goldie:

I just got a text from jodi as well, will you let us know here when they have passed?

She said they we're as close as a couple of miles in her text.

I SCREAMED at her to get in the basement too....

    ReplyDelete
  99. tina~ I get back the night of the 23rd!

Weather really bad here, Jodi is in the basement, tornado about a mile from her but she is ok.

The people of WESconsin need your prayers- it is flooding, storming, tornados, evacutations- nasty shit here!

    ReplyDelete
  100. BARB/WA: I love hummingbirds. Mr.Z was trimming our tree once, and an irridescent blue hummingbird started chirping at him and flying around his head. He stopped and looked at the limb he was about to cut off, and saw a nest. He assured the hummingbird he would not cut that branch down..and he didn't!! lol

    ReplyDelete
  101. will do kgirl- we are not out of the woods yet.........
and I am in the basement too..

    ReplyDelete
  102. GOLDIE & JODI: I will be praying for you! Please stay safe...let us know as soon as these storms pass.

    ReplyDelete
  103. GOLDIE: Is WANT near the storms too??

    ReplyDelete
  104. shit goldie, did not know you we're affected too,

what about WANT? Is she in the nasty area too?

you have water, meds, and radio nearby right?

    ReplyDelete
  105. These storms have been scary! We were supposed to get hit, but it is all heading north of us (to Wisconsin)!

Hoping all my Wisconsin buddies are safe!

    ReplyDelete
  106. Can someone type out a list of everyone who is in the storm areas? This has been such a crazy weather pattern. Thankfully I have sun today for the first time in ages. I hope that the good weather is headed to you all too!!

My thoughts are with you and your family, blessing to you all and to your Dad.

    ReplyDelete
  109. SACBARB: There are wildfires in your area...are you all right??

    ReplyDelete
  110. GLYNIS: I think I read that BEAR also said LIL OL ME was in an area that was flooding in Iowa..

    ReplyDelete
  111. YIKES! The sun is shining, but there was just a blast of thunder! (I see from the north-west it is very dark)! Quite an ominous cloud. No sirens, so I think Iteach and I are safe (for now)!

Hoping Jodi, Want, and Goldie are safe!!!

    ReplyDelete
  112. zona: tried texting you, but realized its your landline. i got a reply but cannot pull the reply.

    did you reply?

    ReplyDelete
  113. I'm watching the progression of the storms on the Weather Channel website...these are really nasty suckers. There looks to be a clearing coming soon though..I hope so.

    ReplyDelete
  114. KGRL: Yes..left a voice message..it gave me that option.

    ReplyDelete
  115. Zona: It seems California is burning. There are fires in Sac but not close enough to me to worry. I think there is a fire somewhere in the Bay Area too. So, EBJ, SSL, J/L and Whabby, is it near you? I really wish whoever it is that pissed off Mother Nature, would apologize and do some heavy penance.

Barbwa: A hummingbird was hovering around the bride and groom at my son's wedding and many saw it but no one got a picture of it. I was in the front row but I didn't have my camera. It was very cool though and we all took it as a good omen. It was kinda green and lavender.

    ReplyDelete
  116. Prayers are going up for all our WI Owls and all others in danger from Mother Nature.

    ReplyDelete
  117. SACBARB: Glad you are safe...

  123. ok- Want is North of Jodi and I- we are in southern WI. I don't think its as bad up there.

We are in a lull of the storms right now. But the night is young. There have been a lot of tornados and flooding- Jodi had one about a mile from her, but didn't hit her.
Roads are closed, washed out- the intersate is shut down north and east of here.

Meds, dog, husband, flashlight and food in the basement. Nice finished basement too- I am hoping it stays that way!!

I emailed Lil-o-me, she is ok, but she has family hit HARD in Cedar Rapids- lost their business in the floods.

It is going to be a long night I fear. Hope everyone EVERYWHERE is safe!

    ReplyDelete

Just wanted to let everyone know me and my family are ok. Tornadoes everywhere tonight.....the closest one hit about 1 1/2 miles south of me, but we're ok!!! Thanks to TURTLE and TINA for updating everyone and checking on me.....helped me pass the time.....first time since the kids were little that we've had to hit the basement.

Just heard from my cousin in Kansas who said they're ok so far, but "It is building up SW of here this evening and we are under a watch until 10p.m. It looks like it could get ugly. Chapman, KS was wiped out last night". Still waiting to hear from cousins in flooded Rapid City, SD area and my niece in Appleton, WI. Be safe, Owls!!

Sterling and Rock Falls has a flash flood warning (luckily I don't live near a creek or river, and I don't think Iteach does either)!
