My Angel "Nadine"

So its that time for me, my "squeeze" will be happening today!

It started several years back, on a routine mammo, I needed additional testing, at first I was really taken aback, as it was so unexpected. I was scheduled for a Breast Biopsy the following week. A Breast Biopsy is not very pleasant, as I am sure one would not think so. Large long needles are used and you just cannot watch, you must turn your head, squeeze your hands until they hurt and pray! The Biopsy came back negative for any cancer cells.

However my gyno called and referred me to a breast surgeon and I was told to make a appointment immediately. I went into panic mode, I could not think, all I remember my gyno saying was "immediately". With some searching, I found a Breast Surgeon in my area who took my insurance coverage. If I remember correctly I was in her office within 7days of getting the news.

I did not tell my parents as I could not make the worry, I told a handful of people, and asked one of my friends to come with me, as I so needed a hand to hold. I was very well prepared with all my films and of course my notepad. Why I brought a notepad? I have no idea because I did not write one thing down.

That was the day I met my angel Dr. Nadine Pappas, on first sight she was so simple, so easy, so kind. She spent three hours with me, explaining all that she saw on the films. I had a mass, It seemed to her is was scar tissue from a breast reduction I had, however it needed to come out and be analyzed, even tho my Biopsy came back negative, she wanted to be sure. The surgery was scheduled for the following month. I also had to arrange to have a plastic surgeon in the operating room as if the mass was bigger than she thought I would need reconstruction.

I remember sitting my parents down and explaining this all to them, their faces were pale, their voices empty. And in every breathe I took I made sure I said "no cancer cells were present".

And so the day arrives, I always wondered why the heck you have to be there at 5AM, it just ruins the whole day, as I am not a early riser, 8AM is so much better for me. But 5AM it was and I was there on time, upon arrival I was whisked away by a scrub nurse and prepped, they are all so very sweet, as they hold your shaking hand, and wipe your tears. My doctors came to greet me, and went over everything one more time. My plastic surgeon then broke some news to me. He said "I have a prosthetic, just in case your breast collapses we can put the prosthetic in so your breasts will be even" Excuse me? "What did you just say" and with that he walked away, to leave me with my thoughts of getting a boob job in one boob and not having to pay for it. But wait, this all started because I wanted them smaller! I guess its the ole saying "Be careful what you wish for" .

With me, my thoughts and my nakedness, they wheel me into the OR, and again my angel appears, holds my hand and tells me she is confident of the outcome, all will be ok. I remember being told to count backwards as the angel holds my hand, I think, I got to 9 and that is all I remember. When I awake shivering and nauseous, my angel is in front of me, again holding my hand. She tells me the mass is gone, they sent in down to the lab as soon as they got it out, and waited for the outcome before sewing me back up. They wanted to be sure so if they needed to take more out they could while I was still in La La Land. The outcome! Negative no cancer cells, I am cancer free. And no need for the prosthetic as my boob did not deflate. And to that I say "Thank Goodness". My angel was right all along!

So every six months for the last 7years I visit my angel, we have become somewhat friends, as I now call her by her first name. "Nadine" I say, "how are you"! She hugs me hello, and we then chat, as she pushes, feels, prods and kneads two things of mine that she knows so well!

This part of my life, is part of my history, it is a part of me! It has made me stronger and wiser. I am forever grateful that I came out of it ok. It was a scare, however I am extremely lucky and I know this!

Many thanks to my angel named Nadine.....

I don't know who wrote the blog but that was beautiful!

  4. Ok I have had some coffee and am partially awake.

Dr. Nadine sounds wonderful! I think that struck such a note with me because when I was having the rash problem and it was really starting to concern me it seemed like my doctor was going through the motions at times to appease me. I have to say that this really just made me more concerned and worried.

When I was referred to the dermatologist and he tried allergy testing first, I was paritally relieved but the problem was not getting better. He finally asked me after getting negatives on the allergy test what my main concern was and I told him Inflammatory Breast Disease.

He reassured me by taking my concerns seriously. He tried two medications and the rash was not going away and he said well I don't think this IBD but we are going to do a biopsy anyway because even in medicine you just never know and I don't want to be a doctor who let this one slip through!

I was scared but in a way relieved because we would be covering all of our bases.

I had a different biopsy where they took a 1 inch deep skin punch from my aureola that required 3 stitches when they where done. It was painful after but not during. His nurse held my hand and kept reassuring me that it would work out fine.

She was right no cancerous cells but severe contact dermatitis which we could not figure out the cause. He did finally find a medication that helped.

It was scary and really I think Mr. Lynn D and my friend who went with me were more worried than I was.

At the time I was not sure I wanted to know. In hindsight I have decided it is better to know as soon as possible so you are either relieved or you can make a game plan!

What was the best was finding a doctor who listened and addressed my concerns and fears! That was priceless!

Birdee: I am exhausted and limping but had a great time with the grandkids. I do have to say tho that if I had that energy my house would be spotless, my yard would be landscaped and I would have solved the world's problems in less than a week! LOL

  5. Carol: Great blog! What a scary thing to have to go through. I'm glad it turned out well for you.

Birdee: Same to you! I'm glad you came out OK.

    HUGS to you BOTH!

Lynn D: OUCH! Pinched nerves are NOT fun!

Hope everyone has a great day.

Head still is hurting a bit...but I don't feel as terrible as I had before!

Good Morning Lynn and Jennifer. I can't wait to read the blog but I have to feed my little ones first. Be back in ten minutes.

  9. Good morning birdee (1st!) and lynn.

Great blog Carol. I too went thru the "see a surgeon immediately". Did the mammo, did the ultrasound, did the needle biopsy (ouch) and all turned out ok. But I needed to go back every 6 months for 2 years. Then finally at the 2 year mark- wham, all over again! Apparently one of the lucky ones with cysts that will always have to be watched.

My real angel was in the form of a dental hygienist. Her name was Jayne. I had (have) such a fear that I need valium and gas to even get my teeth cleaned. When things got worse and I needed some more extensive work done, she would come into the room, and sit and hold my hand and talk to me while the dentist and his wonderful assistant Barb worked.

I will always remember Jayne for her kindness to me. She stopped working for my dentist about 6years ago, and she died a couple of years later in her early 40's from years of alcoholism. Demons I never new she had and wish I could have done something for her.

  12. Good Morning Nest!

Carol, what a wonderful blog today. I hope that everyone can have a doctor that they consider their angel when one is needed. What a scary time and to have someone willing to take the time to sit and gently explain everything to you is a blessing.

I am looking forward to Shirley's breakfast. I am hungry! The sun woke me up around 5:45 and my tummy thinks it is much later than it is. I better go boil an egg and get started on my work.

    Have a wonderful Monday Owls!

  13. I just love my ob/gyn doctor Dr. Tugwell.

I would consider having another child again just to see him more often. :)

He is the kindest and most considerate doctor I know. I always felt comfortable wit him.

  14. Good morning!

Carol, what a wonderful blog this morning. I too felt I was right there with you.

I'm so glad you had a good outcome. I had to go in for an ultrasound one time after a mammo and it was very scary.

My mom and dad are coming to visit today! I love when we can get together, seems like they are always busy these days.

    Have a nice day everyone!

  15. Good Morning Goldie, Whabbear and Glynis. Nice to see you.
A powerful blog Carol. Isn't it wonderful that we do have angels who show up when you need one? I had one and I will talk about it another day. It was two years ago tomorrow that we were hit with the news that my sister had cancer and had about 3 months to live. It's strange how anniversaries can affect your life. I am going to try and keep very busy today and tomorrow and think about all the happy things my sister and I shared.
I am off to have breakfast. I hope you all have a great day.

  19. Good Morning Mek, Glynis and Goldie.

Glynis - My beanie babies love it here. They are on cramped shelves but at least they can breathe. They were in a couple of huge baskets before they came here. How can a grandson go from 3 to 13 so fast? If the beanie babies ever become valuable as they once rumoured they would, maybe he can retire early.

  20. Good Morning Owls!

Carol: What a scary ordeal, but I'm glad it had a good outcome. I've had doctors whose knowledge and confidence helped put my mind at ease, but I can't think of any who have touched my heart the way Dr. Nadine has touched yours.

When Cosette was going through her battle with cancer though, some of her vets were earthly angels. Their compassion was a source of comfort and strength for me.

Waving Hi to Birdee, Lynn, Jennifer, Goldie, Whabby, Glynis, Iteach, EBJ, Tinka, MEK!

Wishing everyone a great day and a wonderful week!

  21. Tink~ I am glad the Beanies have a nice home and you can enjoy each other. I never collected Beanies, but I used to collect Boyd's Bears. Then I had my own babies... and then 9/11 happened... and my church wanted to send gently used and new teddy bears to the children of the area. So my collection moved to NYC. I just know they go out on the town often. But no postcard! The nerve!!

Waving back at Amicus!! Good morning to you too!!

  22. Good morning to Birdee, LynnD, Jennifer, Tinka, Goldie, Whabbear, Glynis, Iteach, EBJ, MEK, Amicus, and everyone else yet to arrive.

That was an excellent blog, Carol, and really well written. Good luck today.

So far, I have had no worrisome incidents concerning my breasts. I did have a biopsy done on my thyroid when I mentioned that I had a lump there for several years. (I know, I know) They had me lie down with a small pillow under my shoulders so my head dropped back, exposing my full neck. They used a long needle which they then jiggled inside my neck in order to break away as many cells as possible. My biopsy did come back positive so now instead of a thyroid, I have a thin scar going across my neck and am on thyroid medication. After I woke up from surgery, I was sitting up in the hospital bed when I started dozing and my head fell back. OMG!!!! It hurt SO BAD! An image of me being a giant PEZ dispenser flashed across my eyes! LOL

    ReplyDelete
  23. Birdee congrats on 1st!

    Good morning/afternoon everyone!

Carol I'm so glad everything worked out well for you. Sometimes I wished doctors would just slow down and listen to us. Sometimes all we need is for them to acknowledge our fears and calm them with a reassuring smile or a kind word. Is that too much to ask? I guess for some doctors it is.

Just Lin my brother, sister and mother have all had their thyroids out due to cancer and they have the same scar on their necks. They all take thyroid medication. I do too but I still have my thyroid. It is tested regularly for cancer.

Glynis, I meant to tell you I enjoyed your story about your daughter the other day! She seems so mature for her age! I am trying to get caught up around here, but it's difficult lol

Glad you got the beanie babies arranged Tinka!

  25. I am glad that everything went well and you had no cancer. I hope every woman takes mamograms seriously. My childhood friend just lost her Mom to breast cancer. She was so healthy and she had great insurance. She was such an intelligent woman but she put off her mamogram. At the end she was in so much pain and so scared. Her family took her on a dream cruise right before she passed away. If only people would go to docs ASAP as soon as they feel problems arise and not put them off.
Grandma Moses e-mailed me and told me she had a wonderful cruise despite hurricane Bertha!
    Birdie
    how is Jax doing?
Okay, I'm out of here. Busy day ahead and then off to dinner and a movie tonight. Bucket List was a great movie about 2 men with terminal cancer starring Jack Nicolson! It was funny, sad, and insightful. Watch it!

  26. I was trying to get the nerve up today to make an eye appointment. I know it sounds stupid but I have never had an eye exam done and I don't know what to expect. So the fear of the unknown is really playing tricks with my mind. Plus the anxiety of seeing new people is unnerving. But my eyes have been going bad for about two years. I sometimes have days were my eyes are blurry all the time. I feel presser on the back of my head and get headaches and my eyes water a lot. So I know I have to make an appointment. I spent most of the morning and afternoon debating this in my mind. Finally I grabbed the phonebook and looked for optometrists (I had the book held at arms length and it was still hard to focus on the names). There was a doctor that comes to my town. I called the number. No answer and no voice mail. So I called the office where she is based. They don't book the appointments for this location but told me another location that did the booking. So I called the second location. No, they don't book for this location and don't know why I was told that. Someone will be in office at this location on Tuesday and I can call an make an appointment then. I did find out it will cost $82.00 for the exam. So now I have to wait until tomorrow to find out when I can get an appointment.

  31. Happy Monday Owls.

Carol, Great blog today and as other said, I was right there with you. I'm so glad that things turned out well for you after such a scary experience. We need you here .

Birdee is the early birdee today. Congrats. Good to see your chicken owl in the nest.

LynnD, What a scary experience for you too. I'm so glad it wasn't serious for you too.

Jennifer, Sorry your migraine is limiting you fun with Katie.

Tinka, I hope the bears aren't jealous of your new collection.

Goldie, Love your pics of the grandkids.

  32. SacBarb: Indeed I did... I wore my 50th birthday tee-shirt, and it had the anticipated effect: Jimmy the Bartender (MEK will remember him) gave BOTH me and Huz a free shot of partrone!

And that marks the official END of the celebrations! LOL!

... well, OK, maybe we can do a 50th toast at the BABB!

BTW, is Sharon coming this year? I just found out that Donna Jean is planning on it, pending the outcome of some medical tests with Laurie.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Can't believe I misspelled the name of a premium tequila. Bad, bad, bad.

  34. Bear, Yes Sharon and I will both be there with bells on! Well, maybe not bells, but we ar both excited about attending.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Yea! It's raining! Just rain, no storm. We SO need it. My grass is "greening up" again!!

sacbarb, I think you should wear bells!! Then you and Sharon could do a special 50th birthday dance for Bear. I'm thinking he would like that.

    ReplyDelete
  36. sacbarb: here, there and everywhere! haha

No seriously, internet was not on, but now am connected to high speed cable internet:)

Whabbear, did you see JackieBeat's bulletin about the show for "BEARS ONLY"?! ROFLMAO

    You & hubby should go!

  40. I'm waiting for my mom and dad so thought I'd check in!

Whab we can make root bear floats again. I have a blender, and just need to be reminded what goes into them (besides root bear and vanilla ice cream). :)

How on earth did you talk Huz into coming to the BABB???

    ReplyDelete
  41. Well, Whabbear, if sacbarb and Sharon are anything like me, they would trip on the tassels anyway. I'm just sayin'.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I just woke up. I am getting up earlier and going down for my nap earlier as the summer progreses. Maybe I am part bird.

Shirley - Thanks for some fresh peaches to go with my Slim Fast. I am glad you are getting your eyes checked. When you put on your new glasses it will be like seeing a whole new world.

SacBarb - My bears are at the other end of the house and do not know the beanie babies arrived. It's a good thing as they make not like it that the BB's are on the top floor and they are on the bottom.

Glynis - LOL @ no postcards from them yet. I am glad I am not the only one who can talk to bears. Not only that, they talk back.

I must get to work so I will just give shout-outs to Bear, Joey, Just-Lin and Sandie. Forgive me if I forgot any owls. My eyes are only half open.
    Be back in a while.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Joey - I was disappointed when I found out the picture comment you sent to me of Beanie Babies was not from your collection. Here I thought we had this great thing in common. LOL

    ReplyDelete
  44. I can't believe I said that. I'm kind of blushing . . . I just meant that age, gravity and tassels don't mix . . . LOL!

    ReplyDelete
  45. I think I am procrastinating. Off to do something productive - not that talking to owls isn't productive. I didn't mean that. There is no greater pass-time than talking to owls.

  50. No iteach, but that sounds painful!!

    ReplyDelete
  51. Bear & Sandie: Definiely NO TASSELS!! No one wants to see that.

Sandie, I had the same thought about tripping. LMAO.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I know how to spell DEFINITELY...really I do

    ReplyDelete
  53. My eye doctor said that my optic nerve is swollen.

So he immediately called the neurologist.

The first opening for the neurologist is Aug. 25th.

The eye doctor is afraid that either I might have a brain tumor or menagitis. So I have to have a MRI and a spinal tap with the neurologist to rule them out.

That was not a fun visit today.

  54. Iteach - I just read your post. It certainly wasn't a fun day for you. I will pray that everything works out to be negative and that your eye is perfect.

  72. I went today for just a regular eye appointment.

I'm sure it is probably nothing to get excited about.

I just don't like the idea of having a spinal tap done.

    ReplyDelete
  73. iteach:
Oh my, you had no symptoms?

    ReplyDelete
  74. He immediately asked me if I have been having headaches and I said no.

I can't remember at all when is the last time I have had a headache.

    ReplyDelete
  75. iteach:
See, perfect example of how you never know. I would so think with a swollen
optic nerve there would be symptoms.

You right, it prob is nothing to get all worked up about, however the thought is planted, and now you just have to wait, which I know is a pain in the butt, cause you just want to get it over with...

    ReplyDelete
  76. I am def having a problem with the words you and your today!

    ReplyDelete
  77. iteach:
I also think your doctor is being precautious (sp) which to me is a good doctor!

    ReplyDelete
  78. Iteach: I am SO sorry to hear about your appointment today. I will be praying that it is nothing serious! That is awful that they are making you wait so long! If you need anything let me know! (((HUGS)))!!!

Now I am feeling paranoid about my migraines!

Well, I need to get going. My friend Cindi just left on vacation for 2 more weeks, so I'll be enjoying my "summer home" again!

    Be back later...

  79. I am watching a rerun of the Oprah show with Elvis and Lisa Marie singing "In the Ghetto." All I can say is WOW!!!

    ReplyDelete
  80. Iteach, that seems like a long time to wait if they think it may be meningitis. That's very serious, and I'd think they would want to get on that right away.

Jodi, did you tell them you know what a criminal looks like so they would dismiss you? :)

    ReplyDelete
  81. I was thinking the same thing Sacbarb. I see the eye doctor again next Wednesday for a field test, so I will ask him, if he can get me in quicker.

    ReplyDelete
  82. iteach, I was thinking the same thing as sacbarb--seems like your doctor could call the neurologist and tell him/her you need an appointment way sooner than that! I can't believe he would say something like that to you and then make you wait! That's cruel!

sacbarb, I downloaded that video of Elvis and Lisa Marie on itunes. I love it!

    ReplyDelete
  83. iteach Keeping my fingers crossed and sending positive thoughts your way. Hopefully this is just a false alarm and your doctor is just being very cautious.

Jodi Did you tell them you were a crackwhore so they would dismiss you?

A friend and I are working on a jigsaw puzzle tonight. I'll check back in with you guys later. Hope you all have a good evening.

  84. Hi gang- they don't let crackwhores do jury duty in Dane County, so jodi got out on a technicality, baaahaaaahaaa- JUST kidding-

iteach, excuse me but WTF?? If your dr. tells you that then he needs to back it up with quality care NOW. I had an issue several years ago and was sent to a neurologist- 3 month wait!! My dr. got on the phone with that dr. and I saw him the next day. Be firm with your dr. and tell him it is not acceptable to tell you that kind of info then leave you hanging..jmho

Yes, Jayne was an angel and I think that she really is now if there is a heaven and she is there.

    ReplyDelete
  85. too funny jl- I was writing about our little crackwhore the same time you were!

    ReplyDelete
  86. P.S. iteach- I send you all my best wishes too- didn't mean to sound bitchy. I just worry that you have to worry for so long about something that is probably nothing!

    ReplyDelete
  87. One more thing: I got the cutest little owl Xmas ornament today at the Hallmark store. He has a nightcap on, is winking and is sitting on a "2008". Very cute, but aren't we all? LOL

  88. It seems everyone is off just chillin! Which at times is good thing, we all need to decompress and rethink what are day consisted of and what tomorrow may bring....

My day consisted of work, some grocery shopping, and writing tomorrows blog!

When I write each blog, it of course has something to do with me, however it is always written with you "the owls" in mind, so we can start our day with a new blog, refresh ourselves and begin our day with some new thoughts!

The comments each day are a plus, but to me the most important part is seeing "the owls" converse with each other, building new relationships and helping out each other when needed....

So to all you owls who are just chillin, I thank you for the time you spend here, the gifts you give each other and most importantly the laughter, we must not forgot the laughter.

When Just_Lin so kindly finds the QOTD and sends it to me, she always says such nice things about the owls, she calls you guys a amazing group of people, full of wit and character. She is right!

I am off to bed, I will leave you with my thoughts, that just seemed to flow. I was thinking of apologizing to you all for such a long comment, however I don't want to yell at myself :O)

Have a great nite and a better
    tomorrow!

    Smiles and Happiness always
    :O)

  89. iteach~ I went back and found that you wrote the doctor thought you might have a brain tumor or menangitis. How on earth do they expect you to wait over a month with THAT kind of news? Did you call him back and explain that it isn't OK to wait that long? Isn't there anything you can do to get seen sooner? I agree with Goldie... WTF do they expect you to do and how do they think that it is acceptable to wait?

Prayers for you... and for the neurologists schedule. I mean, COME ON!

  90. Good night Carol. Thank you for everything you do!!

  95. Hey Want~

Carol~ I loved your blog~ You do have an angel there....and so needed~ It's funny tho....at first when I read the blog....all I could think of was..."OH SHIT!".....I don't want the blog to scare "anyone" who may have an appointment coming up.....NO MATTER WHAT....it's ALWAYS important to get yourself checked to head off anything before it gets worse~ Remember....."you" have owls and family and friends that love you and want you around! :D

    Birdee~ Congrats on first~

    Tinka~ I'll be thinking of you~

iteach~ Have your doc call the neurologist.....or go to another one.....but get in there~ You shouldn't have to wait~ I have a fantastic one here.....if I have to, I'll haul your ass over here and get you in!!! In the meantime, I'll be saying prayers for you~

Glynis~ you've got this marching thing down! I thought of you at church on Saturday night....I wasn't on my phone.....but I was thinking of something naughty! :)~

Hodi~ Apparently, they found out you work the streets for extra money and that disqualified you from doing the other civic duty! :)~

  110. Ah my sweet, but very old Bear Buddy!

  111. ITEACH: I also think you need to call your eye dr back tomorrow and not wait until next Wednesday and tell him he needs to find a different doctor that doesn't have that long of a wait. I am not trying to tell you what to do but I know what that waiting can be like for you. I get so mad at some of the medical profession. I am sending good thoughts to you and please call and be assertive (maybe Tina could call for you and pretend to be you)!

TINA: I hope tomorrow's dentist appt goes well for you and without much pain. Now be sure and ask for pain meds.

I was at my daughter's tonight and Where Are The Bachelor's Now show was on and it ended up with DeAnna and Jesse visiting and talking with Trista and Ryan. It was kind of fun to see some of those bitchy women from past shows and what they are doing now. The end of the show was Brad eating a sandwich and watching Jesse propose to DeAnna. He had no expression and then turned it to a baseball game. It was pretty funny.

Yes MEK, I was watching Miss Universe last night and watching Miss USA fall again. I thought at first she was joking but no. She handled it pretty well and she was in the final ten but then they announced the final five and no Miss USA..guess the fall might have gone against her...what are the odds two years in a row for USA to fall down?

    ReplyDelete
  112. Wow, Billy Idol is on The Jimmy Kimmel Show. He is not as young as he used to be! lol

Yup, Miss USA ate the dirt again...

    Hi dianne!

    ReplyDelete
  113. ITEACH: If you read enough being overweight causes every problem. I like the ones where the side effects of medicine is either diarrhea/constipation...hmmm!! I find doing the google makes it worse! (the worries not the poop)

    ReplyDelete
  114. I agree Dianne, I am done googling.

I'm going to spend all day tomorrow with my middle child, Matthew.

We are going to do all his favorite things.

Luckily, he likes to play with barbies.

    ReplyDelete
  115. Thank you, Sleep! LOL!

    Dianne: Good evening!

    ReplyDelete

TINA - Glad you are going tomorrow.....I'll be thinking about you. And no, not sure they know about my "other" profession!!! LOL!!

  122. Ok..I am heading off to bed. It's been a long day. My granddaughter and I had a dr appt so we went to that, had pedicures and went to dinner. It was a fun day and I surprised her with the pedicure...very seldom happens as it is too expensive for a child but today was fun. My other granddaughter was with a friend all day. Tomorrow I head over to the oxygen company with MrD in tow to carry all the tanks and get something smaller and then "maybe" I will use it.

    ReplyDelete
  123. BEAR: Good thing to you listen to the women in your life...like me :)
