Hugs

I saw this poem posted on another blog and thought I would make it into a blog topic. I mean who doesn't love getting hugs right? Well, it turns out that some people do not like hugs. If you suffer from aphenphosmphobia you have a fear of being touched. I don't have that fear, but I have many others.

I always give out hugs here on the blog and in emails and I have often wondered if I saw you in person would I be able to hug you? I'd like to think I would otherwise I would probably get a smack from some of you! Lol! I've seen all the blog buddie meeting pictures and I say to myself "could I do that?". My family isn't very affectionate. We all know we are loved, we just have difficulty showing it.

I remember being at a friends on New Years Eve about eleven years ago. Her family and another mutual friend was there. When midnight hit everyone started hugging each other. I didn't know what to do so I just awkwardly hugged back. I still feel awkward when I hug someone, unless it is a child and then I have no problem.

So how about you. Do you like hugs? What kind of hugger are you...gentle or bone crushing? For all you romantic lovers out there has anyone ever ran acrossed a flower filled field and jumped into the arms of their true love? You know, like in the movies when they kiss you and twirl you around. Maybe I watch too much TV! ((((((HUGS))))))

It's wonderful what a hug can do.
A hug can cheer you when you're blue.
A hug can say "I love you so,"
or "Gee, I hate to see you go."
A hug is "welcome back again;"
and "Great to see you! Where've you been?"
A hug can soothe a small child's pain and bring a rainbow after rain.
The hug! There's just no doubt about it --
We scarcely could survive without it!
A hug delights and warms and charms.
It must be why God gave us arms.
Hugs are great for fathers and mothers.
Sweet for sisters. Swell for brothers.
And chances are your favorite aunts
love them more than potted plants.
Kittens crave them. Puppies love them.
Heads of State are not above them.
A hug can break the language barrier and make your travels so much merrier.
The more you give, the more there's of 'em.
So stretch those arms without delay
and give someone a Hug today!

    I LOVE hugs! Always have....my little brother doesn't give hugs often lol

    I think he has aphenphosmphobia! lol

    My other brother and I used to always joke about him hugging you is like hugging a limp noodle lol

    There are many people in my life, that have passed on, who I'd give ANYTHING for one more hug:)

    I hope you all have a Happy Thong Thursday...For those interested, the 3rd date was postponed until TONIGHT:) Say a prayer for me haha

    I, personally, LOVE hugs! We never hugged growing up but when I met my first husband's family, I learned that there are people in the world who actually DO hug!

    I've never hugged my father. Nope, never. I only started hugging my mother as an adult, and I know it made her uncomfortable at first. I don't get it. It's just something that my side of the family doesn't do. My current husband's family are not big huggers either.

    But I hug all my friends. It's genuine and natural with them. It means, "I'm so happy to see you!"

    My kids and I have always hugged and we always say, "I love you." My ten yr old even still lets me hug her before she gets on the bus each morning! There is nothing uncomfortable or awkward about the hugs between my kids and me.

    My son and his wife will be here tomorrow and I know the first thing we'll do is hug. I can't wait!

    I'm somewhere between gentle and bone-crushing.

    I get countless hugs at school all day, which is the best part of my job. I love it when a child feels comfortable enough to hug me.

    I am one of those touchy feely type of people.

    However, I do try to read people who don't like to be touched and I try to stay in my own bubble.

    As a grandma she has become one, but it was different when I was growing up.

    My sister is just like her, she doesn't like to be touched.

    We haven't had a rainy day in a long long time, it feels kind of good.

    Usually I only like sunny days.

    Good blog Shirley- I am a fan of hugging people I know- not a big fan of hugging by strangers. My family always hugs hello and goodbye.

    Good luck Iteach-my hubby had an MRI last week too. Said he never met more professional people then those doing it. Totally put him at ease about the whole thing.

    Joey got first! Congrats!

    Shirley what a great blog! I had to really think about hugging. I am not an overly demonstrative person because growing up my Dad was not a real hugger.

    In the last few years he has become more of one. We do hug and I always appreciate a sincere and welcome hug but I do have times when it is just a person I know casually that I am a little stiff and uncomfortable.

    I do love to hug the grandkids and try to give everyone in my family a hug whenever I can tell they just need it. A hug from someone that is a sincere, I am so happy to see you or I can tell you need a hug always lifts my spirits!

    I have not had the TV on this morning and have not seen the news. I am going to go do that!

    Vig and Tinka please check in I hope all is well in your neck of the woods that is awfully close to WA I hope we are not in for a big one!

    Shirley, wonderful blog! I didn't grow up with hugs but I love them now! My parents were just never huggers--still aren't. But, I hug my kids every chance I get!

    I would hug you, Shirley, before you could even think about hugging me!! Thanks for such an uplifting blog today.

  17. Thanks so much for the concern about the 6.1 earthquake in Canada. Tink and I do live on Vancouver Island where the earthquake happened, but it happened at the top of this very large island and off the island, so it wasn't felt in our area or on land. At least I didn't feel it..did you, Tink? It is the thrid one in that area in the last couple of days, and the experts are saying there could be more. Might be a good idea for all in the PNW to update the earthquake kit! Thanks again everyone for your thoughts!

  20. Thanks Vig- glad all is ok. It was shocking news to see the "breaking news" about the earthquake. I sure would be hugging you all if we were together.

    Shirley- I get what you are saying about it being awkward when you don't know people. That is when I do not like to be hugged. A new friend and a hug is fine, but someones MIl's sisters cousin at the grocery store, not so much.

    And for whatever reason I am way more comfortable being hugged by another women than by a man if it is someone I am not close too.

    Ok, back to work- or should I say, I better get started with work. I have been on the phone arguing with the insurance company over a charge at my dr.s office. OY-

    Lynn_D...yup, we don't live that far apart, do we..we deinitely can feel the same earthquake. The big one in Seattle in 2001, I spent under a table in a class at the University of Victoria. It was the strongest one I have ever felt. Eathquakes are a scarey reality on the westcoast.

    Shirley...love your blog and love hugs. I have noticed in the last few years that people have become huggier or at least it seems a hug has become an acceptable way of saying hello and goodbye. Sometimes it is hard to who to hug..how well you know them...if it is a handshake or hug relationship..and that little dance of whether it is going to be a hug or handshake is always quite funny. I love hugs and swnd hugs out to you all this morning!

    Haven't been on here much lately because life is intense and busy mainly with trying to get a research project done by next week...back to work I go. Happy Thursday!

  25. Good Morning Owls. I am off again early this am, but I wanted to check in since I never got here yesterday.

    Shirley, Love the blog today and the video. Our big Italian family is very BIG on hugs and I love it. Bone crushing hugs are saved mostly for family and some close friends.

    I hug a lot of my friends, but I draw the line at total strangers. I saw a video once where a man was in an airport (I think) holding a sign that read 'free hugs' just to see how many people would hug him. I'm not sure I would, although it produced a lot of smiles from the participants. I would definitely hug all of you, though.

    Glad to here the quake was not close to our nesters!

    Shirley, We didn't do much hugging in our family. Now it seems so good and natural to say "I love you" and give hugs. In public I give & get hugs from people I know.
    At out VFW post I always hug our Vets, they love it! They only time I am uncomfortable getting hugs, is from strangers and ANY drunks lol!!!
    I noticed breakfast is not being served here yet and I am too lazy to make it lol, soooo I am off to eat my raisin brand....

    Let me ask y'all (I love using that Joey!) a question. If you met a fellow Night Owl would you automatically go for a hug? Would you expect a hug a from them? I find it interesting that a lot of us didn't get hugged as kids. Was it a generational thing. I bet Carol's big Italian family are huggers. Of course some of the men in that family I wouldn't mind hugging myself! Lol!

  28. First of all, thank you owls for being concerned about us on Vancouver Island. I am really late in checking into the blog or I would have responded earlier. I listened to the 7:00 news before we all got up. That is late for us and a very pleasant experience. I think Tia is starting to mature and we don't have to leap out of bed to get her outside at 6 or 6:30. Anyway, I heard on the news that there were a series of earthquakes off Northern Vancouver Island, none big enough to be felt here and not big enough to cause a tsunami. Earthquakes scare me and I don't even like to think about them. I do have my earthquake kit well stocked but it always worries me that I might not be able to get to it. We are on the same fault line that extends from B.C. to California. Every once in a while the news starts talking about "The Big One" coming and all I can think of is the state of our brick schools holding our precious children. They are slowly updating the schools but "they" don't have the money to work quickly. I think it should be top priority. Anyway, thanks for the concern. No, we did not feel anything here.

  29. Good Morning Shirley - What a great blog you presented this morning. It lifted me up just reading the poem. Then to see all those children hugging touched my soul. Thank you for the warm feeling your blog gave me.

    I loved to be hugged from friends and family. I do think it is more 'fashionable' to hug when you meet up with a friend today as compared to when I was young. I don't ever remember seeing adults hugging. They always shook hands. Shaking hands now seems to be the formal way to greet someone, usually someone you have just met. I know a few people who don't like to be hugged. They give out that aura and people I know respect that. No-one should be forced to be hugged. I don't think there is anything more embarrassing that watching someone be hugged if they don't want it. The look on his/her face is one of almost panic.

    My family is very affectionate. I feel very fortunate for that. I know families who are not and it seems strange to me.

    I loved being hugged by the children that I taught. I don't know what it is like now in the schools but for the last few years I was teaching we were warned to not hug children for fear of being accused of child abuse. I thought that was so sad. I know teachers who would never hug a crying child because of that warning. I thought it was time for me to leave when that policy came in. Hugging an upset child is an automatic response for me. I ignored the warning up until the day I retired and hugged anyone who needed it. If I were still teaching I know I would still be hugging.

    Yes, I LOVE hugs! I hug just about everyone I know, (and a few I don't) JK!!

    My family was always big on hugs and kisses growing up, and so was my husband's family, so we just naturally assumed everyone else felt the same way.

    Whoa! Were we wrong! The first time I met a friend of a friend and went in for the hug, I almost fell down, she moved back so fast! So, I learned quickly to never assume everyone else feels the same.

    My oldest daughter's husband comes from a family of non-huggers, and it has just been within the past year or two (they have been married 16 yrs) that he will give me a hug. I have learned not to take it personally, I know he loves me, but sometimes I just want a big old squeeze from him! Now the grandkids, are HUGE HUGGERS! Sometimes they don't want to let go! I just love that.

    Great Blog, Shirley, and I loved the video! And yes, I would give you a big old bone crushing Hug if and when we should ever get to meet each other!

    I am sure there will be lots of Hugs going around the BABBQ this weekend, but, maybe I should play it by ear and see who wants one before I go in for the kill!!!

    DONNA JO~ from Area 51, yes we can pretend to be long-lost twins! So glad someone else remembered the blue denim 3 ring binders! And yes, writing all over them was a must! And of course the yellow Pee-Chee folders with all the sports jocks all over the front, too!

    VIG and TINKA~ so glad you weren't affected by the earthquake. We have them all the time where I live, it is just part of our life. I am not afraid of them. I would rather have an earthquake than a tornado or hurricane. I am also sending prayers to everyone that might be in Gustav's path! I sure hope New Orleans doesn't get the brunt of it.

    Well, like SacBarb, I am out the door early today. Gotta get some shopping done before we leave for the BABBQ, have the oil changed in my Jeep, and make sure the tires are FULLY inflated!

  47. Oh Sacbarb I hear ya on that one! Lol! I won't even wear shorts in public. If someone comes to visit and I have shorts on I rush to put pants on and shoes. I rarely go barefoot if anyone is around. Even family.

  52. I remember about 5 years ago I had a very bad staph infection in my leg. The bandage had to be changed every day and wearing pants was just too aggravating so I went out in short. I thought I would die from embarrassment. I guess I didn't though.

  60. I am doing the same thing I do every day. I stay home. I have tried to find someone to take me grocery shopping but I haven't had any luck. I can only buy a few things and I don't want to pay $9.00 for a taxi fare.

    SHIRLEY: I was hugged a lot as a child, though I wouldn't call my family 'huggers'. I guess I just stuck my arms out..and I got the hugs I wanted and needed. As an adult I don't shy away from hugs at all...in fact, just like when I was a kid...I still love them. So when you meet me....Hug Away!! :)

    JOEY: Congrats on FIRST!! My sis is the same as your brother, she isn't big into hugs...but when I grab her...she doesn't have much of a choice...we usually end up LOAO!!

    ITEACH: Sending good thoughts and prayers your way...loved that you 'hugged the rain'. What a wonderful visual!

    TINKA: Glad you and VIG are ok..and didn't even feel the EQ. I lived in So. California for ten years and shook through quite a few medium size quakes...I know how scary they can be.

    Delivered on the steps at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. on August 28, 1963

    Five score years ago, a great American, in whose symbolic shadow we stand signed the Emancipation Proclamation. This momentous decree came as a great beacon light of hope to millions of Negro slaves who had been seared in the flames of withering injustice. It came as a joyous daybreak to end the long night of captivity.

    But one hundred years later, we must face the tragic fact that the Negro is still not free. One hundred years later, the life of the Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination. One hundred years later, the Negro lives on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity. One hundred years later, the Negro is still languishing in the corners of American society and finds himself an exile in his own land. So we have come here today to dramatize an appalling condition.

    In a sense we have come to our nation's capital to cash a check. When the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of the Constitution and the declaration of Independence, they were signing a promissory note to which every American was to fall heir. This note was a promise that all men would be guaranteed the inalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

    It is obvious today that America has defaulted on this promissory note insofar as her citizens of color are concerned. Instead of honoring this sacred obligation, America has given the Negro people a bad check which has come back marked "insufficient funds." But we refuse to believe that the bank of justice is bankrupt. We refuse to believe that there are insufficient funds in the great vaults of opportunity of this nation. So we have come to cash this check -- a check that will give us upon demand the riches of freedom and the security of justice. We have also come to this hallowed spot to remind America of the fierce urgency of now. This is no time to engage in the luxury of cooling off or to take the tranquilizing drug of gradualism. Now is the time to rise from the dark and desolate valley of segregation to the sunlit path of racial justice. Now is the time to open the doors of opportunity to all of God's children. Now is the time to lift our nation from the quicksands of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood.

    It would be fatal for the nation to overlook the urgency of the moment and to underestimate the determination of the Negro. This sweltering summer of the Negro's legitimate discontent will not pass until there is an invigorating autumn of freedom and equality. Nineteen sixty-three is not an end, but a beginning. Those who hope that the Negro needed to blow off steam and will now be content will have a rude awakening if the nation returns to business as usual. There will be neither rest nor tranquility in America until the Negro is granted his citizenship rights. The whirlwinds of revolt will continue to shake the foundations of our nation until the bright day of justice emerges.

    But there is something that I must say to my people who stand on the warm threshold which leads into the palace of justice. In the process of gaining our rightful place we must not be guilty of wrongful deeds. Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred.

    We must forever conduct our struggle on the high plane of dignity and discipline. We must not allow our creative protest to degenerate into physical violence. Again and again we must rise to the majestic heights of meeting physical force with soul force. The marvelous new militancy which has engulfed the Negro community must not lead us to distrust of all white people, for many of our white brothers, as evidenced by their presence here today, have come to realize that their destiny is tied up with our destiny and their freedom is inextricably bound to our freedom. We cannot walk alone.

  94. Oh, depends on who you ask. The people that sell them will tell you that they do. I bought it and a ankle bracelt because I liked the looks.

    I have noticed NOTHING since wearing them, but I think it may have to do more with mind over matter. If you believe it will help it might- I just never went into it believing it was going to relieve the symptoms of PAD OR Neuropathy. For shits sake my drugs barely do that, so a little magnet is not going to do it. But that is just my humble opinion.

  99. Hey folks I went out and hugged a tree! LOL

    Popping in I have to get off my sorry butt and get some stuff done here! Just got off the phone with one daughter and again the day is slipping away!

    Vig in 2001 when the earthquake hit I was at work in our local garden center in a giant hoop house that we had all of the chemicals in for pest control watching them fall off the shelves and hit the floor and break open! Scary crap! I was also trying to get a very elderly couple out the doors and away from it. Mr. Lynn D was at work in our state capital Olympia he watched as his computer monitor literally hop hop hopped across his desk and hit the floor. No room under his damn desk to hide.

    Oh and thanks for the reminder on that very moving speech. It has taken some time but maybe we have matured as a nation and can see more of that promise happen here in the near future!

    Just got back from visiting the history museum in downtown Augusta with my hubby and parents. They have a James Brown section now. Of course, there's a big golf section, too! MEK would love it.

    Shirley, I think it is a generational thing. My Mom does not like to show emotion and always tells people not to cry--"it doesn't solve anything." She used to always tell my kids that when they were little and I would tell her not to say that to them--they could cry if they wanted!! I realize that's just the way she was brought up. And yes, she's a real hugger with the grandkids but was never like that with my sister and me. Interesting.

Today at the museum there was a section about slavery, etc. and there were signs that used to be outside of rest rooms and near water fountains pointing out which were for "whites" and which were for "colored." It just felt so weird to see that. I said to my Mom, what would those people who endured that say today to see a black man running for President? I think it's so awesome!

    Shirley Loved this blog and loved the video!

    To me there are hugs, then there are (((HUGS))). I've always been a hugger with my kids and we always say "I love you". I was not brought up that way although I have changed that. Back in the 70's I started saying out loud "I love you" to my mom, dad and brother, so of course they'd say it back. My dad is no longer alive, but it has become who we are to hug each other and really hold each other. We always say I love at the end of a phone call or visit. Really holding someone and allowing yourself to be held is really a very comforting and healing feeling. For me, it is a feeling of being loved and at peace. One of the two owners of the vet clinic I work for, gives the very best hugs. She will hold you in a wonderful warm embrace for several minutes and just be in the moment. It's marvelous.

    One more thing: Tinka and VIG So glad the earthquake did not affect you.

  110. Shirley: What a great blog!! I had the uncomfortable feeling too when people used to hug me. I finally got over it. Now, when I hug someone, I always ask first because I remember how I felt when I was uncomfortable. I think asking someone and genuinely waiting for their "Okay" or "yes", really prepares them for the hug and then it is okay. It is like permission to come in and be close for a moment. We all should always ask before just diving in because it does make some people feel a little squishy. BUT: Cyber Hugs are different..so I give lots of those here. :)

    I am a hugger, yep, thats me.. My parents are huggers, all my family are huggers, and the best hugs I get are from my nephews, it does not matter that they are all in their 20's now, they hug me, I hug them and love every minute of it...and my sister, she gives great hugs.. :O)

    I even have clients that hug me when I see them, as with some our relationship is a long one, and hug from them is always good...

  121. BONO: In answer to your question the other night..I just talked to my son and yes, he and about a thousand or so of his co-workers are at the Bronco (Invesco) Stadium. He was handing out water to the people in line for a couple of hours today. He said people are renting out their driveways for $80. All the parking lots are closed and with security. Our weather is perfect today..low humidity and about 80 for the high today..a beautiful breeze tonight.

    I am interested in watching this convention and the Republican one next week. I guess I an enjoying this with it being in my city. I change my mind daily on who to vote for but I like watching the history being made. I am glad my son will be able to be in the Stadium and see all this as well. I do have to say I told him to not jump in front of anyone to save lives...that's what the Secret Service is for!! I guess he is just my 36 year old baby boy!

  124. I'm sure most of you are watching the convention in Denver. I just wanted to say I enjoyed reading all your comments on my blog. I guess a lot of us grew up without very many hugs. Like I told Hartldo, I think it is very important to make sure we tell our kids they are loved and give them lots of hugs every day. It's hard being a kid and they need to know and feel that they are loved.

  125. SHIRLEY: I love your blog today. I didn't grow up with a lot of hugging but my children grew up with it in our house. As an adult, I was a little uncomfortable in my younger years (early 30's) but changed as the years went on. I hug a lot now with all my friends and the two blog buddies I have met. When I was married to my now deceased husband, hc came from a Mexican family and they hugged all the time. I used to kid with them as there were so many that my the time you hugged everyone hello it was time to leave and hug them all good by!

    It felt like I was being hugged by a big machine.

    I slept through most of it.

    The MRI tech knew I was sleeping because she could see my eyes moving, she said I had rapid eye movement.

    I won't know any of the results until my Dr. appt. on next Friday.

  153. Dianne~ I have a ginormous Mexican family~ You are right....when we have a family gathering, my hubby says "Let's start going!" which means to start the hugging goodbye so we can be gone w/in the hour~ :D
