To Clean or Not to Clean?

by Iteach

mop
dust
dishes
windows
disinfect
vacuum
laundry
iron
neaten
put away
throw away
fold

What do you think of those words above? Personally, they are not my favorite words. The cleaning is such an endless cycle. Should I save it and do it all one day? Or should I spread it out through the week? These endless cleaning questions clutter my mind.

Do you have a favorite chore? The only one that brings me joy is vacuuming. I have no idea why, but I have always enjoyed it. What do you enjoy about cleaning?

I am eager to hear all your cleaning fetishes.

  1. Good Morning Everyone!!!!

Cute blog Iteach. I used to love to vacuum, now I only like it on occassion. Can't stand the noise!

I do like to wash the dishes most of the time, instead of using the dishwasher.

But, I actually enjoy cleaning other people's home's than my own.

  3. How 'bout someone come help clean my house with me today AND then we'll go straight back to yours and get that done together too!!!!!

With a little music and some drinks, we could knock it out in no time! ;o)

  4. I used to work my full time office job and then had two cleaning jobs to do a few times a week and weekends. Don't know how I used to handle 3 jobs with 2 kids.

  5. Morning Glories!

    Birdee got first!

Iteach not one damn chore brings me Joy! LOL

I do the laundry and think to myself how many hundreds of thousands socks have I matched? How many freaking towels have I folded? Then I hit the kitchen and think why can't some damn NASA scientist come up with bio degradable dishes and laundry? Or better yet a self cleaning bathroom that can be installed at home?

I used to clean like a maniac and now my house looks well messy! LOL Dust and dog hair abound! Paper is taking over and I just go buy new socks and underwear!

Ok I confess I do take a swipe at the obnoxious cleaning once in awhile but really I have better things to do like be here! You know I really should dust this computer more often!

Don't get me wrong I like a clean house but I just wish I would win the damn lottery so I could hire someone else to make it clean!

Need more coffee be back in a bit!

  6. Morning Owls!

Birdee....I used to clean other peoples houses too. Now I need someone to help me with mine! I am sort of a clean freak and can't get it done like I used to.

I think my favorite part of cleaning is the sense of accomplishment and, well...cleanliness when it's all done.

My least favorite thing to do is put away clothes, don't know why. I don't mind the folding part, I just don't like to put them away.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Birdee wish you lived closer I would turn you loose on my house! LMAO

I too have cleaned houses and rentals when my kids were younger and then worked two jobs. Any day I had off was usually spent cleaning at home. Maybe it just burned me out!

Now I guess I just don't have the energy I once had.

Will be heading out here in a bit. It is Make A Difference Day in our area and I am doing extra duty at the food bank and will be helping to unload hundreds of pound of food that the 62nd Brigade at Ft. Lewis has collected for us to put in Thanksgiving baskets!

Now that is something I gladly put my energy into! The toilets can wait! LOL

Hope everyone has a great day!

Goldie hope you are feeling Ok today! (((Hugs)))

I'm off for a "me" day!!

I hope everyone has an excellent day!!

  10. Good Morning Birdee - Congrats on First.

Good Morning Lynn, Scirish, and Mek. Hope you having a good day.

My grandchildren are still asleep but my doggies are awake so we are sitting by the fire waiting for them.

I will read the blog and comments and be back in a few minutes.

  11. Thanks for the blog Iteach. There are always such creative blogs. I don't know how you owls keeping thinking of them. I love a clean house but I don't love cleaning. All the years I taught I had a cleaning lady. I couldn't have done both jobs and still have energy to play with my kids. After my divorce I did my own work for a while but vacuuming and washing floors are hard on my back so my daughter would come through like a whirlwind and clean every couple of weeks for me. What she could do in an hour would take me all week. Then I got a cleaning couple and they would great. A few months ago they quit and I don't know why. Now I am looking for someone but it isn't easy to find a good one. The "Merry Maids" love to dust and don't 'deep clean'. Well, I can dust easily and tidy but I find vacuuming and washing floors very difficult. I do love washing, folding and putting away clothes. I wash towels and bedding far too often. I know I am using up precious energy but I don't like to use towels twice. I guess that is a fetish of mine. I don't like dust and I am always putting my pillows and teddy bears in the dryer for 5 minutes to make sure there are no dust mites. I saw a TV show on dust mites and it scared me. They are ugly when you see them magnified.
My sister loved to iron and I loved to hand wash sweaters, etc. We would exchange jobs. I miss that.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I have the grandchildren until noon. Then I have a hair appointment and then I will nap. I am going to a Thanksgiving dinner after that. I always have Thanksgiving dinner with Dave, Brian and about 15 others but it got cancelled this year because some friends were out of town. We decided to have it two weeks later than usual. I guess
this is it for me today. I will be back on the blog tomorrow.
I think I hear my grandkids getting up. Time for breakfast and a Halloween video.
    Have a great day everyone.

  13. Are we having a spelling test? I'm not familiar with these words. I hope I don't have to use them in a sentence.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Good morning and congrats on 1st Birdee!

Good morning Lynn D, Scirish, Mek and Tinka.

My older sister loves to clean. I'm sure she must be adopted. We can't be blood relatives, cause I absolutely hate cleaning. I guess if I had to choose a chore that I like it would be washing dishes. But that's only if I have to choose, otherwise I hate them all.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Ok heading out the door!

Shirley LMAO at the spelling test!As far as picking a favorite chore, if you notice I did not! I won't do it and no one can make me! LOL

    Waving at everyone!

  16. A little morning chuckle.

This morning on the way to work, I looked over to my left and there was a

    Woman

    In a brand new
    Cadillac

    Doing 75 mph

    With her
    Face up next to her

    rear view mirror

    Putting on her eyeliner.

    I looked away

    for a couple seconds!

And when I looked back she was

    halfway over in my lane,

    still working on that makeup.

    As a man,

    I don't scare easily.

    But she scared me so much;

    I dropped

    My electric shaver ,

    which knocked

    The donut

    Out of my other hand.

    In all

    the confusion of trying

    to straighten out the car

    using my knees against

    the steering wheel,

    it knocked

    my cell phone

    away from my ear,

    which fell,

    into the coffee

    between my legs,

    splashed,

    and burned

    Big Jim and the Twins,

    ruined the phone,

    soaked my trousers,

    and disconnected an
    important call.

    Damn women drivers!!

  17. Good Morning!!

ITEACH: I don't mind mopping. I HATE dusting. I like to do dishes, except crusty ones. We have to clean windows? Uh-oh. Disinfectant better already be in the products I buy so it's a twofer. Nikki hates the vacuum, but I kinda like it..there's an immediate gratification when you hear something 'click-clack' into that machine. I don't mind washing clothes, or even hanging them up...I HATE folding them. What's an iron? Tidying up is a specialty..with more throw away than put away. This last one can be repeated...I HATE TO FOLD CLOTHES!!!!

    Other than that...man, housework's a breeze... ;)

GREAT blog ITEACH!! That was fun! :)

    ReplyDelete
  18. ITEACH: Have you ever been vacuuming and noticed a tiny piece of paper on the floor...and instead of bending over and picking it up..you run the vacuum across it over and over and over again?? I do this all the time...I finally sigh and pick it up..only to stuff it into the brushes instead of just throwing it away!! I'm such a goof.

Between the ages of 8 and 19, the first words I'd hear when walking into the house after school were "There's a load of laundry in the dryer to fold..." Oh, the faces I made...behind mom's back of course. Did I mention I HATE to fold clothes?? ;)

    ReplyDelete
  19. Happy Saturday Owls.

Iteach, Interesting blog today. I really love a clean house...I just don't love doing it. It is interesting how we all did so much with so little time when we were younger and busier. Now I really do have more time, but I seem to do less cleaning. I am tired and don't have the energy, and I have aches and pains that prevent me from doing some things, like vacuuming and climbing a ladder to reach things higher than my 5'0" height. Even carrying a load of clothes to the laundry room puts stress on my knees and hips that cause pain.

I have never had a favorite chore (can't even imagine that), I just have some I dislike less than others, but like Shirley I really hate them all. I always wished I could be like Elizabeth Montgomery's character Samantha and twitch my nose and it would be done.

If I had to choose...no I can't do that...nevermind (in my best Emily Latella voice)

    ReplyDelete
  20. BIRDEE!!! Congrats on FIRST! I love being able to see your cute avatar all day! I missed you. ps/ 2nd, 3rd and 4th too! :)

A little music..some drinks...I think I would even iron for those..if you could show me how!

LYNND: Oh hell yes! I want a self cleaning bathroom!!!

MEK: Hello fellow desert dweller!! Don't you find dusting in AZ to be a never ending battle? I just dusted three days ago..and I bet I could write everyone's name on my TV stand right now. ;)

TINKA: PERFECT! I love a clean house too..but don't like cleaning. We are doing the carpets next weekend...past experience tells me this will not be fun.

SHIRLEY: LOL @ the spelling test..and your joke...thanks for the smiles!

SACBARB: I think you were going to show me how to iron...remember? Our lessons stopped at 'first, plug it in..." ;)

    ReplyDelete
  21. Birdee, congrats on being the early Birdee today.

    Goldie, still thinkin' 'bout ya.

LynnD, No one can make you choose.

MEK, Have fun at the crop today.

Tinka, have fun with your grandkids today.

Shirley, Thanks for the belly laugh this morning. BTW, maybe you are the adopted one??

Zona, Good morning. I remember vacuuming when the kids were small and picking up large toys with the vacuum, instead of bending over to get them. They would be too big to get sucked up and I could just take them off the end of the hose and throw them in the toy chest. I also used to suck up the cig butts and ashes from the ash trays (remember them?) instead of dumping them in the trash...saved steps ya know.

    ReplyDelete
  22. SACBARB: We had a canister vacuum when I was a kid...oh geez I hated that thing. It would get stuck around corners...hit me in the ankles and the back of my heels...and the cord was lethal! It was self-retractable and would come whipping at you at maiming speeds!! I don't know how many cord burns I suffered! I would get out of the way, but it would always find me! THWACK!!! I swore to myself I would never have a canister vacuum with a whip cord when I grew up..and I kept that promise!! :D

    ReplyDelete
  23. Bear, I just heard that Google has donated $100,000 to help defeat prop 8. They should have done that earlier IMO. At least the CA Superintendent of Schools is finally refuting the ads about school kids.

    ReplyDelete
  24. GOLDIE: Thinking about you today!! SWAK!! :)

Ok..I'm going to go write everyone's name on my TV stand..hope y'all have a wonderful day!

    ReplyDelete
  25. I had a canister vac too, but I didn't have the whip cord. I had to wrap it around a hundred times to put it away. When the kids got older, one of their chores was to vacuum and they always put it away with the cord all wadded up and it would get huge knots that were a pain to undo.

Hey Tina, there is a big NASCAR race about 20 miles (Roseville) from me today. I'm not going though.

    ReplyDelete
  26. SacBarb: Hooray for Apple! Better late than never... and I heard something yesterday that Dianne Feinstein is going to make a public ad about it before the election too!

Google came out against it too.

Shirley: LOL at the spelling test!

These days, I'm LOVING doing laundry, because I just remodeled my bathroom to put in a combo washer/dryer. It's one of those front-loading machines that doesn't even need venting... all the moisture in the drying cycle is either spun out, or extracted from the air, and sent down the drain!

    It's fabulous!

OK, off to tennis. Will check in later... have a great Saturday, Owls!

Goldie: Send us an update when you can!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Oh... Barb... I LOVE the ad that the superintendent did! He was very forceful and to the point!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Congrats on first Birdie. I wish you and Jax could go with me to the haunted houses this week end. They promise it to be spooktacular!
As I sit here munching on candy corn NOT doing any house work let me explain why.
I bought a Roomba vacuume cleaner that is preset to vacuume for me. It's great for under the beds and around tight corners.
I use a Swiffer mop which makes mopping a 30 second job.
I use paper plates, paper bowls and styrofoam cups (shame on me).
If I want an item pressed then I take it to the dry cleaners. I haven't ironed in years.
My only real chore is the bathrooms. One bathroom is rarely used.Scrubbing bubbles is my best friend at bathroom cleaning time.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Goldie I hope that you are doing well. My dad had a stint put into one of the main arteries of his heart. The artery was shaped like a U so it got clogged very easily.

I didn't see you down there!

  31. mop - the kids
    dust - the kids
dishes - whichever kid is in trouble
windows - i think they do themselves
    disinfect - what's that?
    vacuum - the kids
    laundry - me~
    iron - what's that?
    neaten - I'm neat too~
put away - leave it out~
throw away - hubby...pisses me off cuz i like to leave it out~
    fold - me....and it sucks~

there ya go iteach~ I do as little as possible around here~ That's why i carried three kids, ate for them, screamed as they came out, even carried two at once...and damn were they heavy~ I'm all for not cleaning...to answer your question~ :D

    birdee~ congrats on first~

    Shirley~ thanks for the chuckle~

sacbarb~ my guys are racing in Atlanta this weekend....if it stops raining~

    ReplyDelete
  32. Birdee Good morning to you, too, and congrats on being first today.

Shirley LMAO @ spelling test! Loved your joke, too. :D

iteach I used to be much better about cleaning house when I was younger, had much more to do with less time to do it in. Until a few years ago, I never had a dishwasher and I just love it. I threw my iron away years ago. It an item has to have a crease, it gets dry cleaned, otherwise, the "dewrinkle" cycle on my dryer works just fine for most things. I guess my favorite cleaning chores are hearing the dishwasher, washing machine, or dryer working while I am doing nothing. :)

    ReplyDelete
  33. Birdee, I have missed your cute avatar! Congrats on 1st!

Tinka, I have a wonderful visual of you and your doggies sitting by the fire.It would be nice to have a picture of that.

Zona, sounds like you and your canister had a S&M thing going on lol!

Tina, do you really "dust& mop" your kids lol!!

Shirley, LMAO on the "woman drivers!"

MEK, Have a wonderful "me" day!

Whabbear,Tennis? On a cold, wet, windy miserable day? Oh yah,right...tha's my weather lol!

My biggest cleaning pet peeve is clutter & crumbs. I hate both! I am not a neat freak by a long shot, but there is nothing worse than walking on a floor that has crumbs and is sticky! I visited a gal once who had cereal and crumbs around all the floor boards and sticky cool aid or juice in front of the frig. Grossed me out.
Clutter is the worst. I don't mean projects or normal daily stuff, I mean stacks of mags, papers, things not sorted and put away from months and years! Can't stand it!
I am guilty of ironing. I don't mind folding clothes and putting them away. I like looking at my bird feeder while doing dishes. Mr Mary does the windows.I guess my worst task would be the dusting and cleaning the bathroom.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I hope you all got that I love having a dishwasher, not that I loved being without one.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Have you ever gotten a gift from someone, thanked them and when you got home said "WTF"? Well about 5 years ago my friend bought me an iron for Christmas. Now she had never seen me iron & I had never asked for an iron, so why she bought me an iron will stay a mystery I guess. I did use it once on a pillow case to see if I could make a nice, even crease. I did and the iron has been sitting on the shelf ever since. Things that make you go hmmmmmmmmmmmm.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Just so you all don't think I'm a total slob, I have done some dusting to day. My ass has dusted the computer chair, the chair in front of the TV and the toliet seat. So there :p
    Lol!!

    ReplyDelete
  37. ITEACH - Great blog. I'll be the first to admit, I am not a fan of housework, but I do enjoy vacuuming!!! I just bought a new vacuum.....the old one damn near exploded. Makes my heart happy to have an appliance that WORKS!!! I also don't mind the laundry, but I HATE sorting the whites. With 5 of us in the house, it can be downright frustrating!!! Most weeks I just leave the whites in the basket and it's a free for all!!!

SHIRLEY - lol @ spelling test!!!

ZONA - I hope you spelled my name right.....you better ask TINA!!! lol!!

    ATTN KMART SHOPPERS:

I talked with GOLDIE this morning. She finally got home from the hospital at about 10pm last night. She is "splayed out" on the couch today....as per her dr's orders!!! (I think "splayed out" is a technical term!!!) She says to say THANK YOU to everyone for their thoughts and prayers....especially to TINA'S MOM!!! She will be back in the nest tomorrow.

......BACK TO OUR REGUALARLY SCHEDULED PROGRAM!!!

  39. GOOD AFTERNOON EVERYONE
Typically when I wake up I fix a cup of coffee and sit down and read the days blog. Then I read every one's comments, in part so I can respond. The problem is by the time I finish reading them I can't remember who said what or did what. Not to mention all of you are so clever and funny and I am sitting here feeling dim witted.

I used to be more or less a cleaning fanatic and all items had to be placed on tables, etc. at just the right angle. Those days are long gone, although I still have my crooked picture fetish. Oh, and at work the towels in the ward had to be placed with what I call the spine facing out. Like books on a shelf. There is a creek, hills, trees (which I appreciate) outside my house, however, the environment creates gaggles of spiders. I can hose off the outside of my house and a few hours later walk outside and walk through newly constructed webs. I swear 30 years ago my house was never this dusty.

So, now I not only feel dim witted, I feel like a slob on top of it. Now I feel the need to clean today. Once again, all of you are so funny and once again I feel like I have had another self help session.

J/Slin: Thanks for another wonderful dinner. You are the best cook.

  40. Hello Owls,

I have so much to say, but I'm on the go again.

I woke up early this morning to go early early Christmas shopping with my mom at a mall one hour away.

It started off fine, but then by the end it was time to go home.

I love my mom dearly but we are just opposites.

For example, I'm trying on a shirt I told her to go get me a 1x. She comes back with a 3x. I say, mom, I'm a 1x. My mom says no your more like a 3x. WTF!!!

Anyway, we don't shop for clothes often, so I survived.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I'm now off to the YMCA for a Halloween Party with the kids.

Every year they put on a wonderful party and the kids have so much fun.

Also, it is free which is my favorite price tag. :0

I'll be back later to comment on all your funny comments.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Congrats birdee on first today!

I hope everyone is having a great Saturday! I am on only for a few minutes. My daughter will be home soon and we are going out to eat. I walked 14,750 steps so far today.

This might be a 20,000 day if I keep it up!

  44. He Owlina's!

I am home and boy do I feel old! I think I may have lifted one to many boxes of tomato sauce! I am feeling it everywhere! LOL

Busy day people fed, more food from the brigade than we know where to put it and they stayed to help get our haunted house ready for Halloween!!!

We did this last year for a fund raiser and the community begged us to do it again. We even have a non profit group called the lost boys who dress up as pirates and have a motorized trailer that is a ship they bring with them and get this we will have real live fire breathers performing outside!

Should be fun! LOL I will be there working next Friday and they inform me I need a costume. Crap now I have to go figure that out!

Jodi thank you so much for the update on Goldie! You are wonderful for doing that! Goldie if you read this, rest you hear me!

Ok going to check email and then lay down for a bit.

We have to get J/Linda hooked on GW. She said it is all about cleavage. If that is the case Linda would qualify for a rather large part on the program. :)

  79. My favorite chore would be mowing the lawn. I get such a satisfaction after the yard is done and it looks so nice.

Good evening everyone, I hope everyone had a wonderful Saturday.
Mine was very busy - Operation brightside in the morning, grocery shopping, more grocery shopping, dinner w/ daughter, pumpkin carving, pumpkin seed baking and finally I get to sit for a minute! 16,558 steps since this morning!

    Phew! Going to read comments.

  86. Iteach:
Thanks for writing todays blog and sending if off to me, I appreciate it so...

I have to admit I don't clean, my house is cleaned by my mom, she actually loves doing it, I have tired to help her, but she wants to do it herself. And I don't do laundry she does that as well...

I have a cleaning service that cleans my office once a month.

I take my car to a car wash every two weeks.. And every 10 washes I get a free wash.. Fun!!!

Ok, so maybe I am a little spoiled.. :O)

  95. Lani & J/L did you guys really work on a puzzle last night?

I use to love putting puzzles together. As soon as the kids get a little bit older, I'm going to start dragging them back out.

As of right now I'm stuck with Elmo puzzles.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Bebbi- I have to agree I totally love mowing the lawn too.

I slap the Mr.'s hand if he tries to mow.

    ReplyDelete
  97. iteach Yes, we really did put together a 500 piece puzzle.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Oh, I wish I could do one with you two.

I always like doing the edges first.

    ReplyDelete
  99. ITEACH:Yes we did. We have had puzzle nights for years. Poor Linda - I dosed off a couple of times. I was still not caught up on my sleep from my insomnia incident the other night. Wish you were here so we could do one together. Linda cooked again. She is a great cook. Have a good night

    ReplyDelete
  100. iteach We always do the edge first!

    ReplyDelete
  101. Lani I think you dozed not dosed. LOL Although, maybe you were dosing while I wasn't looking and that is why you were dozing. LOL

    ReplyDelete
  102. BTW, I am not a great cook but I do okay.

    ReplyDelete
  103. I was laughing about your dosing statement, not your cooking statement. :)

    ReplyDelete
  104. Just Lin, Lani and iteach... - My nana always had a puzzle going on at her house and we'd get down to the end - and there was ALWAYS a piece missing...... My uncle would walk into the room and FINISH the puzzle - he would always take a piece......(and just wait!!)...

God Bless him - it's five years ago today that he passed away!!

Thank you for talking about puzzles and bringing back that fun memory of him!!!
    :-)

    ReplyDelete
  105. Oh, MEK that was such a cute story, thanks for sharing.

    ReplyDelete
  107. MEK That is a nice memory but I have to ask, did you all smack him? LOL

Lani Think you know what BTW is now? LOL

    ReplyDelete
  108. Iteach - no problem - he always had this HUGE grin on his face!! cuz he KNEW he had the piece that we were missing!!

    Gotta love him!!!

    ReplyDelete
  109. Just Lin - oh my, My grandmother and mother were NEVER happy with him - but after awhile - you'd have thought they would figure it out!! right??!!

    ReplyDelete
  113. Uh, oh, I just thought of another one to go with weiner.

It must be time for me to go to bed. :)

    ReplyDelete
  114. Today - at the crop i was at, the lady across from me was telling me that she owned a cocker spaniel and a weiner dog - anyway - she said a friend of hers told her that she she had a "theme" going on with her dogs..... took me a minute to "get it" - but it is pretty funny, when you think about it...

    ReplyDelete
  115. Iteach - I am SO happy that you were able to come out and play tonight!!!
    :-)

    ReplyDelete
  116. Call me wild and crazy, but could it mean by the way? Just a lucky guess.

What a sentimental story about your uncle Mek. Now I will think of you when we do a puzzle. You know we actually haven't experienced the missing piece syndrome for a long time. Sometimes it really was missing a piece and sometimes it stuck to one of us or one of the cats.

    ReplyDelete
  117. Just Lin - I am SO glad that you "got it" also!!!

    ReplyDelete
  118. That is funny MEK, those are two odd dogs to have as pets.

    ReplyDelete
  119. lani - good guess!!

yes, it's a great memory to have!! Thanks...

we often wonder if he has a puzzle piece in his pocket in heaven!!

    ReplyDelete
  120. I am too MEK, I have a stack of report cards in front of me that are waiting for reading grades.

    I needed a weiner break!

    ReplyDelete
  121. iteach You are well known for your "weiner" breaks. LOL

    ReplyDelete
  122. I don't think I will be getting a real "weiner" break tonight.

Hubby is sitting next to me with his laptop all mad because his powerpoint presentation has an "error".

He has been working so hard!

    ReplyDelete
  123. iteach This line of thinking has me totally visualizing a different type of "powerpoint presentation". LOL

    ReplyDelete
  124. crap - this baseball game just got tied up!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  125. Before I sign off I just wanted to say this blog is a metaphor for a day in the life. In the morning it was talk of cleaning, then the things to do today and tonight sex and 1-900 talk.
