I Hope You All Have A Ball

By Lois Lane AKA No_Newz

Every year for too many to count, I'd race through the house screaming on Thanksgiving morning, "I call the neck!"

Most of the time, I was the early bird catching the worm so to speak. Other times, not so much. My sisters Mary and Lucy were my biggest nemeses in those days. Every once in a while they would "call the neck" before I even rolled my tired little bones out of bed.

I don't know what the fascination was, it's not that tasty, and certainly doesn't have much meat on the damn thing. Maybe, because there was only one neck to be had, and so many mouths that wanted to eat it, caused the stir. Whatever the case, I started my own Thanksgiving morning catchphrase on those years I missed out on the neck.

Sliding into the kitchen in my socks, I'd yell to my mother, "I call the balls!"

I meant the gizzards, but no one felt it necessary to correct me.

As the years progressed, my catchphrase didn't really catch on, because seriously, who wants "the balls" anyhow?

Many necks and "balls" later, I was dared by a bunch of blog friends I met through Ross, to enter The Tonight Show's "Who Wants to be a Correspondent" contest. I've never wanted to be on TV, but I take dares very seriously and went for it. Thankfully the tape never aired.

I had so many jokes in my head, but I was trying so hard to be PG since it was for TV. An unedited version of the same event may have come with an NC-17 or R rating.

Being among friends here at the nest, I thought I would share my audition tape with you. Why? Well because for my audition I chose to cover a Turkey Testicle Festival. I thought the concept would be funny, who knew I'd actually put a real turkey ball in my mouth? That's right, for the sake of comedy I ate a turkey testical.

  6. Morning Glories!

I see my nemesis Scrishy got first again! LOL

Ok I woke up this morning and for some reason Rocky Mountain Oysters popped into my head which made me think Of MEK and Dianne in Denver. Then my thoughts went to who would eat those damn things and why, there was no way I was putting them on my need to try list. No way no how!

Then I come to the blog and Lois has written about of all things, turkey balls! First of all I never even thought about turkeys having balls but I guess that makes sense. I watched the video and I still want to know if it is true that the balls are under their wings? If so why and really how uncomfortable is that? I get irritated if I get a shirt sleeve balled up under my armpit! Hmmmm wonder if that is why they look so mean?

I have to say I am glad I watched the video on an empty stomach as I started to gag as the cook was eating a raw testicle! Gads! Ewwwww! Ok I am gagging again thinking about it!

I would be the one drinking the wild turkey!

So another thing to add to my list of what I do not want to try ever!

Bebbi Wishing you a very happy birthday. I hope you can take a break from your Thanksgiving preparations to enjoy your special day.

scirish Congrats on first. BTW, your coffee pot is in the bathroom? LOL

LL/NoNewz Great blog! I watched your video before and it is hilarious! When I hear your voice it reminds me of Bonnie Hunt, who I really like. She has a new show. Maybe you should send your video to her, too.

I am leaving in the morning to go to my mom's house and will be there for 8 days. I will try to pop into the nest once or twice while I'm there. I hope every one has an excellent Thanksgiving and a wonderful week.

  25. Shirley,
Thanks for the birthday cake! I am having a slice of lemon pound cake with glaze..yum! Best Virtual cake I ever had, you did an outstanding job making it Shirley!

Thanks for the birthday wishes. I don't have anything special planned. I am cleaning and making desserts today. I am making room for the Christmas tree in the living room. It's amazing the stuff we accumulate!

I don't like to make a big fuss about my birthday. Actually, I thought I might sneak by without anyone noticing...lol. So Carol, the intent was there on my part to hide...hehe, so no worries.

Thanks to everyone for the birthday wishes! I do appreciate it.

Thanks Carol, Goldie, Iteach and Just Lin for the birthday wishes!

  26. I am busy decorating. I have just finished the den. So now I have 3 done, the den, teddy bear room and guest room. I will be MIA a lot for about a week. I just wanted to wish everyone a very Happy Thanksgiving and to tell Lois I loved your blog and video. You deserve to be on T.V.

See you all tomorrow. Have fun getting ready.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Regarding the turkey, I am one of those "white meat only" people. No dark meat, neck or gizzards for me, thanks.

Shirley This Devil's Food cake you made for Bebbi's birthday is delicious! I love the dark fudge frosting, too. And it's so good with Vanilla Bean ice cream. :)

    ReplyDelete
  28. LOL, hilarious Lois Lane! For some reason watching this reminded me of Alec Baldwin on SNL talking about big, hairy, sweaty balls. You could still submit this to Ross. He takes news videos from bloggers now. Antonioooo is the only comedian of the bunch. Check him out sometime.
Oh and I did a PR release on the NBC blog reminding everyone to tune in to Rosie Live tonight with a reminder that if the show gets picked up as a weekly variety show that a writing job might be in the works for you. Don't forget Rosie Live tonight everyone!!!Turn every TV in the house on. We want her numbers to sky rocket!
    *****Bebbi*****
Happy birthday. As my gift to you I am sending you a million dollar bill. Just don't spend it because it's counterfit.:0) I got my nephew one for Christmas and put it in his leather wallet. Now isn't that true Auntie love?!
    Have a great Thanksgiving everyone!

  29. I forgot to mention that my sister was always wanting chicken necks when she was a kid. My parents would beg her to eat a piece of real meat but she would always refuse and just naw on necks. ( a bit creepy)... ;) As an adult she now eats chicken breasts. She's come a long way. ;)

  30. Hi Hooters,

Happy Wednesday! And Happy Birthday Bebbi!

Congrats to Scirish for being fist today!

Lois that was a great video! I can't imagine why you weren't chosen as a correspondent, you would be perfect!

What do you think the job title is of the man who fries the turkey balls? A ball fryer? Nut nuker? Turkey jerker? haha

My company will be here shortly, I want to wish everyone a wonderful holiday tomorrow. If you don't celebrate Thanksgiving, hope you have a warm, safe day.

I was going to try to send Myspaz messages to all my friends but probably won't have time now.

Thank you to everyone who leave me comments, I really appreciate it!

I have a hate-hate relationship with MS so don't spend much time on there.

It's raining today! Finally! We need it, and have had hardly any true November weather.

Oh! I have YH baked beans in the crock pot right now! I've made them this way before, and they turn out wonderful :)

  56. LMAO - he just said - "you didn't want to BBQ anything tonite, did you?"!!!

    ReplyDelete
  57. NN/Very funny blog and video.

ZONA: We think alike. I was also wondering what would make LYNND wake up thinking about Rocky Mtn Oysters and MEK and I? I am flattered that we are on her mind first thing though. Unlike MEK, I have tasted them many years ago. I was at some kind of party where they were frying them and putting them on buns. I can't remember what they really tasted like though and I doubt I would want to have another order in front of me.

ZONA: Big night on the home front...getting your new crowns and all! :)

Happy Birthday Bebbi. I am enjoying the angel food cake with the thick frosting that SHIRLEY made for you....not sugar free! Thanks SHIRLEY...I love your cakes! BEBBI: Cleaning does not sound like a fun Birthday to me or a fun anything to me for that matter!

We are going to my son's tomorrow and I still have to get my things to make the vegetable but thought I would go to the store later when the crowd is less. I will be up early to watch the parade in the morning. My dad used to take me to the parade when I was a little girl in New York and he always made sure we were watching it for the rest of his life...regardless of how early it came on tv..and now I am just like him, calling my kids to turn it on.

JUST/LIN: Have a nice time and vacation with your mom.

I hope everyone has a very happy and thankful Thanksgiving tomorrow.

    ReplyDelete
  58. SCIRISH - Congrats on first!!!

TINA - Get your ass out of bed earlier....ya snooze, ya lose!!

ITEACH - Blowing little guys?!!? WOW you've had a busy week!!!

    GOLDIE - Apes....who knew?!!?

ZONA - Yippee for you!!! Maybe you'll grow some more brain cells back now. :P

    BEBBI - Happy Birthday 2 U!!

Tina & MEK I just caught the news on the terrorist attacks in India. It just makes me ill!

I have never eaten Turkey balls, but have been to Gizzard City here in Mich. and had a mouthful of gizzards!
We also tried a deep fried hamburger.
I'm off to clean out my Turkey and make sure it is defrosted...

  62. HAPPY THANKSGIVING TOMORROW.

NN/LL, I enjoyed your testicle blog. It reminded me of my German roommate years ago. She made me try everything like brains, sweet breads, tripe etc. News flash brains are like the consistency of mush!

  63. OMG, Lois, you've inspired a pretty lively nest today! From violated simians to safe forms of oral sex, it's been a wild ride!

    ReplyDelete
  64. MEK - Thanks for answering your phone!!! I was having withdrawals. :P

    CAROL - You have gmail!!!

Off to read my book before going to bed. I have to work tomorrow, but only til noon. Another perfect Thanksgiving....I only have to show up and eat!!!

Everyone have a good night. :D

    ReplyDelete
  65. I want to wish everyone a very Happy Thanksgiving. I will be gone for the next week but will try to pop in to the nest a couple of times to say "Hi".

    ReplyDelete
  66. Hiya everyone! I have worked the food bank today and that kicked my ass. I am one of the youngest volunteers and end up doing at least 3 jobs and the heavy lifting.

In between I have been glued to CNN and am in shock over what is happening in India. Why the hell can't everyone just get along and let us all live our lives? Scary crap!

Tina yes I have tasted balls but Mr. Lynn D makes me take my teeth out before I bite!

Also I kept wondering today if they remove the semen before they fry the testicles or does that keep them moist? I know that is gross but come on!! My brain wanders alot. Also who get to be the luck testicle milker if they drain them??

Dianne and MEK I have now idea why I woke up thinking about Rocky Mt. Oysters! Again it is the weird brain thing!

    Good lord Raped Apes!

Went into town to pick up odds and ends for tomorrow and also Mr. Lynn D from the ride share and it was bumper to bumper traffic! I was also going to get Papa Murphys for dinner tonight and could not find a parking place! Sandwiches are on the menu!

    Bebbi HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU!

I will try to pop on and off tomorrow but I am cooking the turkey and not sure who the hell is showing up tomorrow! Geeez it is like everyone is working up until the last minute and can't decide if our house or the inlaws house is where they should go. Personally I have decided to cook and if they shop fine if not fine and I am going to wear sweats all day and drink and then eat! Perfect Thanksgiving!

Anyone not here tomorrow Wishing you and yours a very Happy Thanksgiving!

    ReplyDelete
  67. oops that should be gets to be the lucky milker! LMAO

  74. My mom always makes her stuffing with gizzards. My nephews love her stuffing, they have been eating it since they were little boys.

However we lied to them when they were little and told them it was made with sausage. They ate it
happily all the years as they grew..

A few years back while we were having Thanksgiving dinner I broke the news to them, that the sausage in the stuffing was not really sausage it was actually Gizzards.

All I remember was them saying "WHAT" and then they looked up with the gizzard was. I thought for sure that was the end of them loving the stuffing...

Nope, not to be.. They love it even more, and request my mom to make it a couple of times a year...

They did admit tho, if we had told them when they were kids, they probably would have not eaten it...

So our lie, was a good lie, I guess it does not hurt to lie sometimes...

  75. Anyone care to comment on Rosie's show or has everyone seen it yet? Not sure if it was live on the west coast or taped for later.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Ronnie I have missed you! I was thinking about you today. I have been having problems with Myspace and have not been on much lately either.

Carol I have been watching and yes it is better you don't watch as it is reminding me of 9/11 also. I feel so helpless and mad because I am so tired of people who claim they do this for religious reasons. Which is I am positive what we are going to hear.

I cook my turkey innards and neck and chop them up for my stuffing too. My family has never asked and they love my stuffing. Tho Mr. Lynn D picks out the heart and kidneys and gives them to the dogs.

I am thinking the revenge pee'r may not get any this year!

    ReplyDelete
  77. OK I guess either no one watched Rosie's show or they don't want to talk about it. I'm off to bed. Everyone who is celebrating tomorrow have a great day!

    ReplyDelete
  78. Shiley, I watched the show, all I will say is that the entertainers were good. She def. needs LL to perk up her stuff. Sorry MHO.

    ReplyDelete
  79. shirley, I didn't mean to change your name to "Shiley" lol!

  80. Howdy feathered friends!
    Brownies are on the table.

Busy day- and I took off 1/2 a day at work. Had to get the 12 hairs cut, go run errands and walk the dog and go to gross-ery store and phew, I'm tired!

Shirley- I watched Rosie's special. Honestly, I was not overly impressed. I was looking forward to it, but really thought it was only so-so. Mr. Goldie thought so too. Looked like she was trying to hard to me.
I saw Liza Minnelli 13 years ago and boy she seems 30 years older!

    ReplyDelete
  81. Happy Thanksgiving Eve!!

I just got home from my mom's - we got the stuffing made -

Shirley - I missed Rosie and hadn't planned to watch it anyway - sorry!!

Goldie - I need my haircuts cut also - but haven't had a chance - also have some major roots showing right now!!

    ReplyDelete
  82. Shirley:
I did see Rosie, however I was not thrilled with it, I guess that is why I did not mention it, as it did not leave an impression.. I thought the Liza/Ro act was awful. And the rest was so-so. I did like Kathy/Nancy thought that was funny..

No, if Lois was writing for them I am sure it would have been much better...

    ReplyDelete
  83. Oh Shirley, honey~ that was one awful show! The only thing I liked was the Donald Trump joke and the Disney commercial that said you could go to Disneyland for free on your birthday! oy~

    ReplyDelete
  84. I think maybe Rosie was trying to hard.

I did get to see Twilight this afternoon and I just about jumped my husband during the kissing part.

Thanks to Aunt Flo I kept our movie theater experience PG.

    ReplyDelete
  85. I would like to hear anyone's reviews about Four Christmas's or Australia.

    ReplyDelete
  86. I thought the Rosie Show was pathetic. It would have been bad even back in the 50's. IMHO

    Okay, back to packing.

    ReplyDelete
  87. After reading the reviews - i am SO thankful that I missed the show.

Just lin - have a safe trip..

    waving good nite to all.......

have to be at my mom's early to get Mr. Tom stuffed and in the oven!

I hope everyone has an Excellent Thursday!!

    ReplyDelete
  88. Jimmy Kimmel is on now....he just called Rosie's show atrocious........and then said "barbara walters wins again!"

    ReplyDelete
  89. Well, I guess the reviews are in on Rosie's show. Lol! I thought the funniest bit was Kathy Griffin as Nancy Grace. I did like the idea of the door but what they did with it kind of fell flat and wasn't funny. If she has any more shows I will watch a couple, but unless they improves a lot I would suggest for Rosie to just stick with blogging. Thanks Mary, Goldie, Carol, Tina, Iteach, Mek and Just Lin...glad to see I wasn't alone in my opinions.

  90. Well, I recorded the Rosie show but it doesn't seem like it is something I need to take the time to watch after reading all your reviews. I might peek in at Liza though. I think Rosie was hoping to be a Carol Burnett and that she is not...

It would be so fun to see variety shows come back on like they were "in my day". I think that is one reason I like DWTS so much..the music and dancing and smiles. I am sounding kind of soupy here tonight. Better go to bed...Night all

  91. SHIRLEY: You are up late tonight. You must be fixing our Owl's Nest Thanksgiving dinner. Am I right? It is a very nice gesture on your part when you already had a Thanksgiving last week. I loved your cake today--it was delish!!

  93. Dianne Thanks. I'm packed except for things I need to use in the morning. I hope you have a great time with your family. I need to sign off now because I'll be getting up early.
