"My Buddy"
by Turtle aka Kahonugirl
Throughout my life my Mom had talked about a song. She was never able to remember the Title or the lyrics. A couple of years ago she had a brain bleed and when she got better her memory from the past had become sharper….go figure.
Last year for the holidays she made her annual migration to the Islands to spend the holidays as she had done for many years. My laptop had died and I purchased a new one, I was uploading data and music that the computer company was able to recover from my old laptop. As I was uploading music I casually asked her about the song. She then started to rattle off the lyrics. I got on Google, found the lyrics, got on iTunes found the song and hit play. My Mom started to cry. The song was “My Buddy” and my Great Grandmother used to sing this song to my Mom when she was a young girl on Sunday mornings.
So last year I asked some very good friends of mine that are Performers here in Honolulu if they could perform this little ditty. They learned the song and that was my last present to her last year. We sat at a table where my friends perform and when they began to sing the song she instantly knew. It is one of the few times I have seen my Mom cry. I wrote a blog about it on my MySpace page.
So that brings us to this year. I was wondering just how could I top that? My friends (the same ones that performed it for her last year) suggested that I record it. I, at first said NO WAY. Then my good friend said he would help me. He is a master Pianist and Producer and invited me to his home studio to record it. So……I did. I was so so nervous and the first recorded track very much showed that. But my friend has a very calm demeanor and guided me thru the process. And yes it is me, and no there was not any manipulation of my voice. Like Carol mentioned on the blog, it is the voice that She and my Father gave me.
So this is my present to my Mom this year. I have shared this already with some of the Owls, so now I share it with you all.
I am just wondering how the hell I am gonna top this next year….lol.

Just back from seeing "The Day the Earth Stood Still." It was OK. It ended kinda abruptly, IMO. We also braved the mall for Black Friday 2. I would never have done it, but Todd wanted to buy Sketchers and he was driving. I stayed in the nice toasty car with the dog and we both took a snooze.
ReplyDeleteJoey, thanks so much for helping with the video so we could all enjoy it.
Tinka, Happy Boxing Day back atcha. I hope your back is all better.

ReplyDeleteWhen the kids aren't looking I try to put some of their unopen toys away in the laundry room. I do this every year. Then in the summer I get them out and it is Christmas all over again.
Hi Everybody!
ReplyDeleteI have been MIA a lot lately, but I hope that will change. My back is feeling a little better this evening. I want to share with everyone about this little blog entry I wrote about my Virgin Healthmiles pedometer. If you get a chance go and read it. I am so excited that they used it and am so proud of choices of getting healthier.

Turtle That was so very touching and beautiful. Thank you so much for letting us share in that. You really have a great voice!
Joey Thanks for letting us see your handsome brother all decked out.
Slani I hope your neck is better.
ReplyDeleteHey Everyone:
ReplyDeleteThank you for all of your kind comments. We we're at my brothers house on Christmas Day for dinner. When dinner was done most had congragated in the kitchen (why is that?) and my niece loaded up the song in the stereo and then called my Mom into the kitchen. I handed her a card and as she finished reading it my niece hit play. She instantly got very quiet and emotional. Thing was she did not realize it was ME singing...lol. That song is so close to her heart that just hearing it causes her to get teary.
When it finished playing my Sister in Law asked who was singing and I replied that it was me. My entire family was like huh? lol. They played it a second time and Mom was a little more composed and started to really take it all in. It was a special moment.
I want to thank Joey for putting it to video as all I had to send Carol was the MP3 version. And thank you to Carol as well.
I hope that all had a wonderful Christmas and Chanukah.
I have been gone all day. breakfast with Mom, dog sitting for my cousin, Dinner at my brothers and then I met up with my old softball buddies. It is after 2am and I am beat but several of you had messaged me to find out her reaction.
Thank you all for letting me share that with you.
Joey Thanks for helping Turtle put together the video! :)
ReplyDelete80 to be tedious!
ReplyDeleteTURTLE...what a heartwarming blog. I can only imagine what your mom was thinking and how she felt. You are a good daughter! Did your mom sing it to you when you were a baby? I think there is a connection closer to your own heart then you know.
ReplyDeleteAnd your voice is gorgeous.
I odn't know how you will top this next year, but I have confidence you will find a way!
