Labels

by Iteach

Labels have been heavy on my mind lately. They are everywhere and lately the negative ones have been clouding my mind. It is amazing how powerful they can be and the reaction you get when you receive a not so friendly label. The following labels pertain to myself.

overweight
plus size
limited budget
PMS

Then I think of my darling husband.

recession
job cuts
unemployment
hiring freezes

Next come my children, especially my sons. They have been hit with labels since the age of two and I have been told from the doctor more may come as they get older.

At work I'm bombarded with labels. It is overwhelming at times. Children come to my room with labels I have never heard of and then there are the curriculum labels. I'm rubbing my head thinking about all the different names they have for teaching reading and it is so goofy.

So what is my point? I'm not sure. (lol) I'm just tired of these labels. I don't want to live in denial, but I'm ready to create new ones. Ones that put a smile on your face. Okay, owls, put your thinking caps on and lets give the above labels a twist. :)

  5. Morning Glories!

Congrats on first Tina and Eunice!

Iteach interesting blog. You are right labels are everywhere. I guess people are not comfortable until they can put something or someone they don't understand into a labled box.

I was amazed at how fast they moved the Oscars last night. No suprise winners but it was pretty good none the less.

Favorite dress Ann Hathaway. She looked great.

    Be back in a bit.

    Morning Birdee and IBB!

  6. Good Morning Hooters!

Way to get that 69 first thing in the morning Tina~!

Hi Birdee, are you gonna poop on her head?

IBB- my personal favorite for PMS is permissible manslaughter.

I agree that there are too many labels given to people to pigeon hole them.

I remember one time my sister and my niece and I were leaving a store and my sister muttered somthing about this guy being a "redneck". My little niece walked right up to him and stared him down. Then she turned to Mommy and and yelled- "Mommy, he doesn't have a red neck, its looks normal". Just about peed myself!!

Hope you Hooters all have a great day. I am again working with my leg on drawer and an ice pack on my ankle. Sucks.

  7. Hi Lynn- you came in while I was typing!!

    ReplyDelete
  8. Morning Goldie! Guess you won't be kicking any ass today! Keep that foot elevated!

    ReplyDelete
  9. Good morning!

Congrats on 1st and 69 today Tina!

Great blog Iteach. We always seem to cling to the negative labels rather than the positive. Why is that?

    Intelligent
    Loving mom, wife, sister, daughter
    Lovely
    Creative

Those are a few labels that I know of you in just a moment's thought.

Today should be a day of positive labels for each of us!

Thank you for the thought provoking blog today! :)

  10. Good Morning Tina and Birdee - Your fight for first is fun to watch. You both posted at the exact time. Once again I say claim 1st Birdee. Tina didn't. All is fair in love and war.

  11. Good Morning Ibebold, Lynn, Goldie, East Bay J. I hope you are all well today.

  12. Iteach~ great blog~ I think it's all in how you perceive the 'labels'!~ I used to be so offended when someone told me I had PMS. Now...i just give them 'the look' and tell them to deal with it....or walk away! :)~ My twins are as different as night and day. My son would tease my daughter and call her dumb, among other things. Of course he would get in trouble for that, but I also pointed out that later in life, she would pass him up because she struggles to learn and will teach herself how to study. Even tho I'm worried about high school, her grades are finally better than his! :D

    ReplyDelete
  13. I love your blog Iteach. I was just about to retire when "labeling" became the 'in' thing in teaching. I swear every second kid had a label attached to him/her. I am still not sure what some of the letters stood for. I was very much against the "specialist" coming into the school and in a short time putting a label on a child. That label would stay with him/her as long as he/she had a file in the school system.

I am off to feed Tia her special diet, then Tango, Teddy and lastly me. I will be back later.

  14. Good Morning Tina. I will race with you to 25.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Tina - I guess I was racing alone. Have a great day everyone.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I got FOADed. Argh!!!

Tina Do they mind that you get 69 at work? Congrats! Everything came to easily to my son when he was in school and he was very bored with it. My daughter had to work for her grades. As adults, she's the one I never worry about as she is the most organized and sets goals for herself and achieves them.

iteach I share some of your labels. :(

    ReplyDelete
  17. Good morning from La$ Vega$!!

    Tina...you work???
    Congrats on first my ho-friend!

Goldie~keep that leg elevated young lady!

Lynnd~ By the time we got to our room the Oscars were presenting the "Best movie". I can't wait to see the all the fashions and listen to the critics. Talk about labels lol!

    IBB~Loved your pms labels!

Birdee~Am I wrong, but aren't you supposed to be labeled "the early bird catches the ho", I mean worm lol!!

Tinka~ Good job marching solo, I was typing as you were leaving. Today I am labeling you
    "Dr Tinka-Love" :)

I am ordering room service. As you all may know, I am not a "morning girl", that is my self imposed label lol!
    BBL
I am ordering a luscious breakfast!

    ReplyDelete
  18. Mary I'm not a morning person, either. Love room service!

  19. Good Morning/afternoon Nesters
A very thought provoking piece ITEACH.
Well, there are labels we give to ourselves and those that others may give us. Other than labels for diagnostic purposes, as far as I am concerned, they should be eliminated.

I may be making more out of this than was meant, but my mind jumps from labeling to teasing or ridicule because of the labels. I abhor cruelty, most especially when it comes to children.
When we put negative labels on ourselves, we confine ourselves. The label should only be used to decide whether we want /can change the cause of it.

  20. EUNICE - You are looking especially lovely today. It must be convenient wearing your hat at work.... you can just lean over and dust your desk.

BIRRRRDEE - You have to get up pretty early in the morning to beat EUNICE. All of that snow may be slowing you down.

IBB & GOLDIE - I do like your PMS translations.

LYNN - I think I am the only one who didn't watch the Oscars.

EBJ - ditto to everything you said to ITEACH.

TINK - I can't say it enough....So glad to see you back.

    Good Morning SLIN

MARY - Enjoy the room service.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Slani LMAO @ Eunice dusting her desk!

  22. ITEACH: I am really worried about labels being given to children, because they can follow a child around for the rest of their lives. Labels that they hear over and over again, and begin to believe, thus stifling their creativity and destroying their self-esteem. I know, because it happened to me. I have struggled to break free of these labels most of my life. Even when I think I've made great strides in tackling something, someone will apply one of those old labels to me..and I'll be right back where I started. I'm sometimes stunned at how hard these labels can hit me..even now, but then, that's probably because I'm "over sensitive". ;)

Great blog today ITEACH. Oh and by the way...personally, I think I'd rather be called plus size than 'pleasingly plump'...anyday..ijs :)

    ReplyDelete
  23. Maybe I wouldn't mind being a "cougar"......ijs. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  24. Afternoon, everybody!

iteach: I'll return to labelling, but a quick question for Dianne:

What did you think of what Sean Penn said?

I LOVED it! It reduced both Mr Whabbear and I to tears!

    ReplyDelete
  25. TINA: Congrat to you on FIRST! Don't forget to water Eunice's bush, kay? You don't want it drying out on you. ;)

BIRDDEEEE!!: Come to AZ so we can melt that snow off your back. It's 80 here right now.

    TINKA: Whoopee! 25! :D

LYNND: The over PC'd labels drive me batty..I don't know why. It's like they HAD to come up with a label and just overdid it.

GOLDIE: I love little kids...the greatest truths seem to always come from them!

    EBJ: Perfect.

    J/L: LOL..69 at work..now THAT's a picture...

    MARY: GOOD LUCK!!!

LANI: Loved your comment..I don't you're making too much of it at all.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Hi Night Owls! I think that's a label we all like! :)

iteach, you are so right--labels can be super annoying. My middle son has labels and he hates them. I tell him they're just words, they don't define him.

    Have a great Monday, all!

I have a label and I have to admit I'm sort of embarrassed about it. "I'm Sandie and I'm a Bachelor-a-holic." Hey EBJ, Mo, Carol, J/L and you other fans--you watchin' tonight? :)

    ReplyDelete
  27. What did you guys do to Eunice? She looks like a cockatoo

We label everything here. Did anyone else here have the pleasure of being part of the MGM program of the 70's? That's Mentally Gifted Minors, and it was basically a license for other kids to tease the MGM participant. I used to cry and try to do badly on tests so I would fit in.

I think we should have just one label. Human Being.

    ReplyDelete
  28. ITEACH - Great blog!! Labels suck...although I could think of a few for you:

    Friend
    Sweet
    Big hearted

    Shall I go on?

SANDIE - I agree, they are just words, but sometimes they do hinder confidence and self esteem.

ZONA - I think I've been accused of the same thing. Personally, I'd rather be that than a cold bitch!!! I think the one that hurt the most is when I was accused of being a "doormat" by my future MIL!!!

Waving a wing @ TINA, BIRDEE, IBB, LYNN D, GOLDIE, EBJ, TINKA, JUST SLIN (lol @ COUGAR!!!), SLANI, MARY & WHABBY!!!

    ReplyDelete
  29. BONACCI - I think you said it best!!!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Thank you, Jodi. My point is that even if a label is "good", it also makes you "different". We're all human. Everything else is just a characteristic.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Bonacci That's the "Eunice in Paris" look. Isn't she lovely? When I was in 8th grade in the early 60s, I was considered part of an "excellerated" group of kids. During part of the day, we were allowed to take chairs outside as a group and "do our thing". Well, it turned out that "our thing" was to laugh, tell joked, make up silly songs and other goofiness. At least we weren't bored and it was definitely the most fun part of the day.

Bear I loved everything that Sean Penn said. It was excellent!

Tinka Nice to see you marching to 25. Congrats!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Um, that should have been "accelerated". Obviously, I was not in that group due to spelling or typing skills. It must have been my math skills, yeah, that's the ticket! :)

    ReplyDelete
  33. OMG!!! I just noticed I got the QOTD.....thanks JUST SLIN!!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Interesting topic...

Been called "names" and "labels" most of my life. Doesn't really bother me much, but I get really oober defensive when they are used on children or those less fortunate than myself.

Whab: I thought Sean Penns speech was almost as good as Tom Hanks speech was when he won for Philadelphia. But I also give kudos to Dustin Lance Black when he received his oscar last night for the Milk Screenplay.

Ultra busy today as we had a fire here at the Pier. Be Back Laters.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Oh and Goldie....

Stanley was about town again~ check ur myspace photos

    ReplyDelete
  36. Jodi No need for me to be thanked for QOTD. I just nominate whatever sticks out most for me by the end of the night. :)

    ReplyDelete
  37. Oh. Well yes. Eunice looks um, lovely. I could see Eunice in gay Pari. Sipping a coffee at a cafe in the Place de la Concorde, then off to the Colonne de Vendôme for some light shopping.

What wonderful friends you are to give her these adventures! I still think she looks like a cockatoo, but a FRENCH cockatoo. Good job owlettes.

  38. Hi every-one. I have been a hibernating bear since this morning. I will now read all the comments.

Mary - I don't like labels but I will happily accept the one of
"Dr. Tinka-Love". I like that one.

I must get something done. It will soon be dark and time to quit working for the day. LOL

    ReplyDelete
  39. Hey, I just noticed. I made 25 and 50 today. Not bad for an old hibernating bear.

    ReplyDelete
  40. iteach, that was a great blog!! I hate labels when they're negative, but I guess it's a fact of life.

I mean, I don't want "gay" to be the first thing people think of when they meet me, so I'm fortunate that I'm not THAT flamboyant lol

No offense to people who are, because "you are who/what you are" and nothing can change that. It's also not that I'm ashamed of it, I just want to be known for more than that ya know? This is probably coming out all wrong but hopefully y'all know what I mean.

    LMAO@Goldie!! Too funny!

Jodi, your QOTD was hilarious! I agree;)lol

I'm in a weird mood again today..story of my life today lol

I'm just stressed and moody(typical Cancer thing haha)

Whabbear, I haven't watched the Oscars yet, but am intrigued to know what Sean Penn said!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Hi Tinka, it's a quiet day around here! I've been doing errands and stuff, now home and waiting for MR. EBJ to get home form work!

Sandie, YES I will be watching Bachelor tonight!! I have not told MR. EBJ that it is 2 hours again! He will be THRILLED!

I can't believe that next week it is all over.

We've had rain on and off, and the sun peeked out once. Poe is on auto-pilot, he has said "OK" every time I say something, then when I don't say anything!! It's so funny.

I guess it is better than when he starts hammering!

Tina, will Eunice be wearing green for St. Patrick's day? I can picture her with a hat of 4 leaf clovers!

    ReplyDelete
  42. labels for myself:

    kind
    generous
    creative
    loving
    loveable(haha)
    moody
    detail oriented
work-in-progress(yes, even at my age hehe)

Congrats on 69 errr 1st Tina lol

Hey EBJ..You sneaked in between my posts haha

    ReplyDelete
  45. EBJ: thanks! I was saying "hey" to you before I saw your post to me LOL

    ReplyDelete
  46. That is a great list of labels Joey. I know I find it very difficult to say anything positive about myself, like many people.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I also meant to say originally that the Oscars are on the DVR lol

I did watch the part live with Beyonce, etc.-the musicals thing!! SO good I thought! I read online though that people thought something was off about Beyonce's voice like lipsynching or something...

    ReplyDelete
  48. oooh I made a double Joey sandwich!

    ReplyDelete
  49. thanks EBJ! awww!
I tried to leave the negative things about me out! haha

I need to find my owl

Btw, I'm craving Girl Scout cookies..ugh lol

    ReplyDelete
  55. We did not have any Girl Scouts come to the house this year. And no one was selling them at work for their kids.

    That is really strange!

    ReplyDelete
  56. yes, EBJ haha

AND we have a fun day planned for WED. too!

I'm enjoying it while I can, because not sure if I'm moving back to VA or where I'll end up!

Tell y'all more about that another day this week!

Have a great night..It was fun hanging out..I need to find dinner..I'm starving!

    ReplyDelete
  57. that is strange...I can't find them either, but can't afford them nor does my waistline need them haha

    ReplyDelete
  58. When I was a GS, the cookies were something like 50 cents a box. And they were big boxes!

They've really shrunk over the years!

    ReplyDelete
  59. oh one more thing..He brought his new PS3 over and I got jealous of a game system! ROFLMAO

Guys and their "big boy toys"..I just don't get into gaming lol

    ReplyDelete
  60. lmao@EBJ!! they have shrunk and I think they're about 4 bucks a box now!

you might get 12 cookies if you're lucky lol

My faves are the "caramel delites" but they're called "simoas" on the west coast I believe

I could down an entire box with some milk if left alone lol

    ReplyDelete
  61. and he's 27, but I'm sure he's not the only adult that loves their games lol

I was impressed with his system..yeah, the game system lol

It is basically a computer!! Fascinating!

    ReplyDelete
  62. We usually buy several boxes and stick them in the freezer so we don't eat them all LOL

Uh, they stay in the freezer a very short time!!!

    ReplyDelete
  63. yea, mine have NEVER made it to the freezer lol

were you a "brownie" too? lol

  64. MR. EBJ just got home, I still get excited to see him! awww

    ReplyDelete
  65. I don't remember if I was a brownie, I don't think so! geez maybe I'm getting dementia already!

    ReplyDelete
  66. aww that's sweet!! I feel the same way after 8 yrs. with dummy lmao

Thanks for cheering me up!!!:) ttyl

    ReplyDelete
  67. haha! let's hope not!

I just thought brownie's were the younger groups of girls..maybe pre-girl scouts lol

    girlscoutsintraining

    ReplyDelete
  68. this thing was at 52 when I got here..now 93 LMAO

    Have fun with Mr. EBJ!

I think I told you before my initials are JBJ! lol

I think of that everytime I see "EBJ"

    ReplyDelete
  69. I'm still stuck on this label thing. Hooters, think about what kind of labels or characteristics you imagine based on that photo. Then see my next entry.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Now the picture's different. Which reflects me as a person? What different labels would you apply to a person posting with that pic? Go ahead, be honest.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Thank you for all your insightful comments about today's blog.

Labels are always heavy on my mind.

I think I should do Joey's idea and write some positive labels about myself.

Hmmmmmm easier said then done. lol

    ReplyDelete
  72. Bonnaci- I would say beautiful, healthy, perky, and happy.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Bonacci LMAO @ French cockatoo!

EBJ Thin Mints are great straight out of the freezer. :)

Joey Glad you had a good weekend. Yes, younger girls are Brownies, then the next step is Girl Scouts. I used to sell the cookies door to door.

    ReplyDelete
  74. BTW- Those were the labels for Bonacci's picture not myself. :)

    ReplyDelete
  75. Bonacci The suit looks unusually dark to me, but otherwise, I don't think there is enough information evident to come to any opinions.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Evening Owls!

Whabby I thought Sean Penns speech was fantastic and really hit the target.

Well it looks like our former Gov. Gary Locke is going to be nominated for Commerce Secretary! Mr. Lynn D and I are excited and think he will be a great pick. Mr. Lynn D has even met him so there is a 6 degrees of seperation working for us! LOL That is 3 people from WA state that are now up for positions in the new Presidents cabinet. Whoda thunk?

    Iteach

    Caring
    Loving
    Teacher of young minds
    Generous
    Funny and Witty!

    Be back later!

Mary I suppose it is to late for you to put a bet down on who will win an Oscar for me? LOL

    Be back later

  77. Congrats on 69 Tina!! Eunice is looking particularly lovely these days. I wonder if she has a new beau?

Well All: Thanks for the kind thoughts and wishes for my dad. He didn't have the surgery today after all. He says he was told by the lady who made the appointment that he would have the surgery and when he called this morning, they said it was just a consultation. My sister and I are puzzled and unsure about whether he got it wrong or the lady really did tell him wrong. No matter either way and probably a mystery we will never solve.

So, it turns out after the consultation that he is too old, heavy, heart weak and smokes too much to have surgery. They want him to try and control his gall bladder problems with his diet. there you have it, a false alarm of which we all are quite relieved (particularly my Father).

I do appreciate the thoughts though. He still needs them. I have tried to get him to come here and read the blog, maybe someday he will pop by.

Iteach: Great blog. Yes, too many labels. My label lately would be "indecisive". But, there would be more..haha.

    Joey: Ohhh..Samoas...YUM..and Double Yum!!

Sorry for the MIA folks. I am just not a very good person sometimes and can't keep up with my life.

I walked a whopping 670 steps ALL DAY ON SATURDAY!! I couldn't get off the couch and I couldn't wake up. I was a mess. I don't know what happened. That is the least I have walked since probably last JUNE! I have to be gentle with myself about it though. It was one bad day out of a lot of good days.

Well, I have to go and enter a mystery shop so I will BBL. Medium is on tonight..woot woot woot!

    ReplyDelete
  78. Bebbi I hope your dad follows instructions regarding his diet. And don't beat yourself up over having some "down time". We're all entitled to take a little time to relax and regroup.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Good evening feathered friends!

It is sad that negative labels stick with the person throughout their lives, but positive ones are so easily forgotten. And to label children is just wrong on so many levels. Too often, they become a self-fulfilling prophecy. Very sad and shameful. I think when kids are labeled as slow learners (or whatever they call it these days) they believe it and become it.

ITEACH...I hope you do make a list...in writing of all your positive attributes. I bet it becomes wayyyy longer then your percieved negatives.

I know it is easier said then done, as we tend to be our own worst enemies.

I see only positives in all of you!

I, on the other hand am a piggy!!

SANDIE...watching the bachelor as I type! I was happy to see that one couple return!

    ReplyDelete
  80. Bebbi You must have needed it. :)

MO You are the greatest and cutest piggy evah!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  81. Oooh, I got #100. Haven't done that in a while. :)

    ReplyDelete
  82. BONACCI...that was interesting. I think that either picture can be a reflection. I think we all have different sides to us. As these are merely avatars...not actual photos...they can reflect our mood at the time. Some days we feel unkempt, artistic, bloated, sexy, sad, mathematical, happy, giving, taking...each day can be 180 degrees opposite...but still "normal" LOL!!!

    JOEY...you're gay?????

    ReplyDelete
  83. JUST LIN...Awww, thank you! SWAK!

    ReplyDelete
  84. MO ROFLMAO @ your question to Joey!!! :D:D:D:D

    ReplyDelete
  85. JUST LIN...looks like it's just you and me tonight! Did you have a good day today? Oh, how was the beef stew?

    ReplyDelete
  86. Shit Mo....are you sure? Joey's gay? how do you know?

    ReplyDelete
  87. Good afternoon
ZONA - I agree regarding children and labels. As parents we always need to educate our children on the harm of labeling.

Hi HODI - I hope you are in the pink this week. How hurtful and destructive to be called a door mat.

EBJ - LOL @ POE'S OK. I can just hear him.

JOEY - It sounds like you are up to speed again. I hope so.

K-Grl - We have been experiencing the storm from your beautiful Island.

BONACCI - The MGM program sounds horrid. As far as your new avatar, I wouldn't know what to say other than it looks like someone on the beach.

    EUNICE - Nice try! :)

    ReplyDelete
  88. TINA...a lucky guess, I suppose!!

    Ho are you hoday?

    ReplyDelete
  89. Mo~ this ho has cramps~ I just may be PMS'ing~ :D DEAL WITH IT PEOPLE!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  90. bonacci~ I like the pic cuz it's real~

    ReplyDelete
  91. It's strange. While growing up, I was called fat and buddah and I think the more I was called fat, the fatter i let myself get. But, all the positive labels I was given, I let go. My mom never said anything but positive things to me, but I just let it in one ear and out the other. I still have a hard time accepting compliments. Any ideas why????

    ReplyDelete
  92. Oh, Maureen, I'm in the same boat.

There has been a lot of research on how a person needs to hear a lot of positive remarks just to make up for one negative comment they heard.

    ReplyDelete
  93. ITEACH...maybe we need to join a club! Remember that character of Al Franken's on SNL that repeated..."i'm good enough, I'm smart enough"...!!

BTW...how is Jennifer doing? I miss her here on the blog

  96. Well, the Bachelor was okay tonight--some of those women are horrid, IMO! Mo, don't you think so??

iteach, there's one good thing about getting older and that is that you're more comfortable in your own skin. I think you'll find it easier to believe those positive labels as you age. You're just a baby now! (I say that in the nicest, most caring (and jealous, lol) way.

Mo, as I say that I agree that it's hard for lots of us to "hear" good things about ourselves. I was teased as a child a lot, too (I was chubby until middle school)and I know that it has affected my self image and weight. Even now, as I lose weight, there's a part of me that doesn't see it and can't believe I'll ever really be thin. I used to be able to shut that part of me up with chocolate, but now I have to deal with her. LOL

  97. SANDIE...you are absolutely right...some of them are truly despicable. I was disappointed in some things on the show tonight...but I won't do a spoiler here!!

I am tired and should be off to bed.

    Good night dear owls...sweet dreams.

  99. Well, it's almost good night owls but thought I would drop by for a second.

BEAR: I thought Penn did well in his speech last night. I guess I was somewhat surprised that he came across as "nice" as he did in the speech as I sometimes think he is kind of grouchy. He was on Oprah today and again pretty much stated what he said last night and actually seemed rather humble that he received the award.

ITEACH; The labels we all put on ourselves are enough much less what others decided what category we should each be in too. I think most of of us have a hard time listing all the pros about ourselves.

MO: Tina will be so glad you let her know about Kimmel. I sent her a text last night telling her the same and she was so grateful..hmmm, let's see...I think she said "you are a ho" or something to that nature. I am pretty sure that means ....'She loves me, she really loves me'!!!

  100. SANDIE AND MO: I always enjoy watching the Bachelor. It was so funny on Ellen today. Meredith from The Today Show was on and she and Ellen admitted how much they love that show. Meredith said she likes it when jason takes his shirt off...Ellen said that didn't thrill her too much but she just loved the show!!

I agree that some of those girls tonight were still not over themselves. I still like Stephanie and Jillian the best of the group that have been sent home. I like both of the ones that are left as long as he doesn't go with Deanna.

MEK: The snowboarder guy (Jesse) has a new girlfriend from a previous bachelor show and he is all happy now..I think her name was Holly.

anyway - I actually wasted TWO HOURS of my life last night having the Bachelor on - I am SOOOOOOO thankful that I have not watched this.

There is NOTHING amazing about it!!
