About Jonathan Livingston Seagull

by Just_Lin

Recently, our dear Carol wrote a blog about going to the Jersey shore and she showed us a flip video which included scenes of a seagull drinking out of the pool. Some of us had rather uncomplimentary things to say about seagulls but I kept thinking, "But what about Jonathan Livingston Seagull?"

Most of you, if not all, are probably familiar with the book "Jonathan Livingston Seagull" by Richard Bach and with the movie with the score written and sung by Neil Diamond. It's been decades since I read the book or saw the movie but it is a classic that covers many themes, including a spiritual aspect . It is about a seagull who is striving to be more than just another seagull scavenging for food like the rest of his flock. He wants to be the very best he can be and he follows his heart and listens to his own inner voice even though it makes him different from the others. His pursuits to learn how to fly like other types of birds fly, gets him ostracized and kicked out of his flock. He continues to strive for higher and higher levels of learning, even at risk of his own peril, but he perseveres in time, he transcends earthly bounds and achieves a higher level of consciousness. He then strives for wisdom, pure love and how to forgive. He understands that the greatest thing he can do is pass on what he has learned to others that seek knowledge. So, in an act of self-sacrifice, he returns to earth to share all he has learned.

The Neil Diamond songs included in the movie are "Dear Father", "Be", "Lonely Looking Sky", and "Skybird". I love all of these songs and am lucky to have seen them all performed in person.

  4. Morning Glories!

    Wohoo MEK got first!

Justlin I remember JLS. It was a beautiful story. I love Neil Diamond. His music is so beautiful. That being said I would never hurt a seagull or a pigeon even tho they are not my favorite birds. This is why I currently have about 30 to 50 pigeons on my freaking roof! I don't want to kill them I just want them to go away. LOL

Dianne from area 51: The kids are going to Laramie as the baby Daddy is going to school there. I never realized how close they would be to you. See you gave me a bright spot in a very dark day! When I go visit I can plan to see you!

Ok gotta go it is food bank day.

  5. Good Morning Everyone!

J/LIN: I saw JLS when I was in highschool. I just got done watching a few of the clips below the one you put up today. I absolutely love the music...it is both soothing and uplifting. The crashing waves are just beautiful, and to see Jonathon soaring through the sky gave me a feeling of freedom and happiness.

Thanks J/LIN for reminding me of not only the movie..but the wonderful soundtrack.

    MEK: Congrats on FIRST!

  17. J/L..

I have never read about JLS, I have heard the name, but did not know the meaning behind it. So when I read your blog I found it quite interesting. It is def a good read for students, as it would teach them to always strive for better, and at the same time teaches them that it is ok to be different.. For him to pass his knowledge onto others shows his character, he is willing to share.
And to share is to pass things onto others, and that is how the world goes round! Great Story!

Loved the vid 2day! I love ND..

Thanks for writing the blog and sending it off to, I appreciate it so..

  18. I have been having issues with my ankles retaining water, which then makes them look like cankles. I went to Dr yesterday, my body is retaining water from my salt intake. I don't add to salt to foods (except meat) and I have never been big on salted foods, so my eating habits have not changed at all. It seems tho, that does not matter, as she explained with getting older our body changes and shifts, and things start to happen that never happen before.. Sooo.. now I am on a water pill.. (I can't believe I just typed that)My pressure was a little on the high side, but that is due to the excess water..

This getting older crap really sucks..

Ok.. gotta go to the bathroom..

  26. Good Morning Owls - Just checking in. I am not typing much today but wanted you to know I was reading comments.

Just-Lin - I remember when the book Jonathan Livingston Seagull was popular. We had great staffroom discussions about it. I think it is still on my shelves, a thin blue paper back. I never saw the movie but I would like too.
Back to resting my hands. Love you all. Tinka

  27. Good Morning Hooters!

    Conrats on 1st MEK!!!!

I loved the movie and I really love Neil Diamond! I always feel bad when Mr. Goldie calls the seagulls 'sky carp'. I love to watch them swoop (as long as it is not at me).

Carol- I went to the Dr. last friday and was told the same thing. You didn't have to change, your body does it for you! THEN you have to change- your metabolism goes to hell and your hormones go with it. The joys of getting older.

Hope everyone has a great day!!

    ReplyDelete
  28. JL....What a great blog! I remember JLS well (hey, similiar initials...I think I shall refer to you as Just Lin Seagull from now on!) I remember reading the book when I was I in high school and loving the spirituality of it all. I love walking along the beach here on the west coast and listening to the sound of the sea gulls. In that beautiful setting is pure yellow!

Extending the group hug from Sunday to anyone needing it today!

  29. Hi, HOoters!

MEK Congrats on #1 and FORE.

Carol I've had been on diuretics (water pills) for years because of cankles. Even the pills weren't working that well anymore, but now that I am really watching what I'm eating, it's getting better. The weight loss is helping as well as not eating so many prepared, microwaveable foods. If you check the packages on those handy foods, you'll see that they are packed with sodium. Our metabolisms do change as we get older, unfortunately.

VIG And my last name initial is even S. : )

I'm glad you all are enjoying the vid and music. I was thinking of this more as a Sunday music vid so did not really get into the themes too much. This story has been the focus of analysis and discussion of many minds much greater than mine. I do know, though, that it is inspirational and speaks to the glory of the human spirit. Many in our nest of friendship are going through very difficult times and even though the challenges may seem too great to bear, you will bear them and you will persevere and will come out the other side even stronger, more compassionate, more loving and wiser than you were before.

  34. Hi Birdee! You must have known that today's blog was about one of your kin. LOL

    ReplyDelete
  35. Just_Lin; Yes, I've heard of this Great Salt Lake in Utah. I'm not sure if I've seen it. Maybe I did and nobody told me.

Still. They're called seagulls which I believe translates to "gulls of the sea". So are the seagulls squatting, or is this "lake" really just a runt ocean that's afraid of schoolyard bullying from the other, bigger oceans?

    ReplyDelete
  36. That was a rhetorical question. I am not trying to be difficult. It just comes naturally.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Bonacci This is what I found out about the Utah State Bird:

"The California gull, even without official status, was long considered the state bird of Utah due to its storied role as a protector of crops. It gained this reputation during the summer of 1848 when swarms of crickets attacked pioneer food supplies. It was reported that flocks of the birds arrived, settled in the "...half-ruined fields" and "gorged themselves" on the attacking crickets. It's often stated that the California gull was made the state bird in return for saving the settler's lives.

It was a long way from 1848 but, over 100 years later, a bill was introduced in the Utah House of Representatives by Richard C. Howe promoting the California gull as the official state bird. The bill was approved by the Utah Legislature and Governor J. Bracken Lee signed the legislation adopting the California gull as the official state bird on February 14, 1955."

    Interesting, isn't it?

    ReplyDelete
  38. Good Afternoon Afternoon. It's a lazy day here in Victoria. I am sitting out on my deck listening to the birds. Living close to the water we have a lot of sea gulls flying by. A lot of people don't like them but they keep our beaches and our city clean. If it wern't for the gulls and crows there would be a lot of garbage. They are both great garbage collectors. I love to sit at the beach and watch them fly by watching closely for something to pick up. They look so free. They catch the wind and just 'go with it'. I would be sad if sea gulls disappeared.

  39. Hi to my daughter Zona-my-Baby, Lynn, Carol, Bear, Tina, Goldie, VIG, Bonacci, Just-Lin, Birdee, and all the other busy owls. Back to my taking it easy. "Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of Summer". Who sang that? I can't remember as I am foggy today.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Just_Lin, that is indeed, some interesting information. I still think there is some degree of fraud being committed here. Maybe it's the seagulls. Because they're not at the sea, they're at a lake. If the lake's really a sea, I blame whatever that body of water really is. Surely California has some responsibility, if only trying to steal glory from the accomplishments of out-of-state wildlife. The crickets I think, are the innocent victims of the whole scheme in that they were rousting about doing what crickets do, which is annoy the s@#t out of people.

My son & I drove to the big city to replace the upstairs one, hence, my whole day was shot, but like the great sea gull I will rise tomorrow and spread my wings to a fresh new day!!(wasn't that clever how I fitted that in lol).

  117. LOL@Bonacci's drinking game! And Carol pinching a loaf! And J/L going to Dead Lobster!

MEK: I would have been right there with you if Tiger had been challenging. BTW, Jim didn't want Phil to come through either! You are both evil!

OMG, everybody, what about that South Carolina governor?

Tinkatia: I hope the arthritis clears up a bit soon... not sure if it ever goes away completely.

Talked to Jim tonight... his Dad's still with us, but just barely. It's kind of weird... I don't think the kinds are going to back for the burial... at the age of 96, there really is nobody left who would come to a funeral!

Iteach: Tut tut on the smut! LOL!

  122. Mary: The story is unbelievable! I was totally out of the loop over the last week or so; I'd never even heard of him. He went missing before Father's Day, and the cover story was that he was hiking in the Appalachians. His wife, asked about his whereabouts, said that she didn't know, and wasn't concerned.

Flash forward to today. He schedules a press conference where he rambles for about 20 minutes, tearfully apologizing to everybody under the sun, and finally admitting to an affair with a woman from Argentina, which is where he was.

And, yes, in case you were wondering, he is a "family-values" anti-gay-marriage Republican who voted for, among other things, federal legislation to block gays and lesbians in DC from having the freedom to adopt children.

Check out my facebook entry tonight for a link to a very telling editorial!
