Jergens Original Scent

by Lynnd

A few weeks ago I was flying through the store doing my weekly grossry shopping and I passed the lotions aisle. Out of the corner of my eye I saw a display for Jergens lotions. One in particular caught my eye as it said Jergens Original Scent. I thought to myself could it be the same formulation from when I was a kid? I did not have time to stop but thought I will check it out next week when I go shopping. Why did this stop me? Call it a scent memory.

Over the years I would occasionally catch the scent of Jergens lotion when I would pass someone. I know that scent! It takes me back to being 4 or 5 years old. My brain flashes to an image of the basement of an old house that my Aunt and Uncle lived in when I was a kid. Then it flashes to a dresser, I can see the top cluttered with various items and in the center is a bottle of Jergens lotion. It has a black top and a curvaceous white bottle with black lettering. This is a grown up ladies thing like make up and hair pins. We were not allowed to play with these things except with supervision and only on dreamy dress up days or Halloween.

I think about my cousins and their Mom and my Mom how it seemed like all of the females in my family used Jergens lotion. My cousin Diane and I would feel so lucky if our Mom’s would get a little too much out of the bottle on to the palms of their hands, they would call us over and have us hold out our hands so they could share the excess with us. This was so special almost like putting on makeup. Then the scent would be with us all day.

I have bought bottles of Jergens in the past but they just did not smell the same and I would always be disappointed. I went back the following week and opened the bottle for a sniff. There is was that clean sweet scent that I remembered from my childhood. It is hard to describe the emotions I felt but it was a cross between sadness and comfort. It kept pushing my brain trying to make memories come forward that I have worked so hard to block out, so well in fact the flashes I have are the ones I described above. My Mother wore this lotion and I think I associate it with her, but I am not sure or maybe my mind plays tricks on me. There is so little I remember about her that it is so hard to be sure. I do have flashes of the house we lived in when she passed away but I don’t know if it is the scent, as they are the same flashes I have when I think about her dying. The living room, the first color TV and the vinyl turquoise colored recliner that my Dad bought especially for her when she got so sick.

I stood in the aisle and read the bottle. Jergens Original Scent, Cherry and Almond. So that is the secret of the heavenly smell. I grabbed it and put it reverently in my cart. As I packed my carry all for the trip down to the family reunion, I put the bottle of Jergens on top. Sunday I woke up and took my shower in preparation of seeing the family, got out and smoothed the lotion on my legs and arms, back and hands and felt a sense of calm and comfort. It seemed to me that just maybe Mom was there with me.

  3. What a wonderful blog Lynn D! Isn't it funny the things that make you remember. I believe my mother use to use that lotion too.

Just so you know, it's written in the bylaws that you can't be first on your own blog, but since you have been up so long and you wrote such a wonderful blog it's ok.

  10. Good Morning!

LYNND: Beautiful blog! I think I read somewhere that scent memories are supposed to be among the strongest we have. My mom wore Ombre Rose perfume. I still have the bottle. When I have one of those days where I am really missing her..I just take the cap off the bottle and spray a tiny bit on my hand. The memories come back so strongly that sometimes I think if I turn around..she'll be standing there.

I recently bought some Jergens Lotion too..only in the baby lotion scent. I guess I was trying to bring back memories from even longer ago.

    Wonderful blog today LYNN..thank you.

  13. Happy Thursday, LynnD, Shirley, MEK, Tina, Zonalady and everyone who arrives later! Have a fabulous day!

LynnD - I agree with Tina! This is your best blog yet. It is so lovely that the scent brings you to your childhood and your Mom. I hope you bought every Original Scent Jergens Lotion in that store - so that you can have that connection with her whenever you want! And I relate...Jergens is my Grandma who died when I was five. I smell that and I am in her kitchen waiting for her to make brown sugar pancakes and playing with her dog Sootie! Thanks for a beautiful memory, my friend!

  14. Thank you all for your comments on the blog today. I wrote it thinking that all of us have scent memories and sometimes you never know when they will be triggered. I often wonder if we are supposed to remember an event as a warning or comfort about current issues in our lives.

MEK I think many women your Mom's age used Jergens. It is nice that she is still using it! Oh and are you still in the bathroom and blogging?

Tina thank you I feel better jumping into first now! LOL PS I do not think you are chopped liver (tho it looks like Eunice has some on her face) I just did not realize that you are so close to Laramie too! :) Geography not being my strong suit!

Zona I love that you still have a bottle of you Mom's perfume. Sadly I don't know if my Mom had a favorite one. If I did know I would run out and buy it.

Shirley thank you! About the by laws, What by laws? Are you making things up as you go along? LMAO

  20. Vig I love your memory! Was Sootie black and white? I don't know why but my brain flashed to a black and white dog sitting in the kitchen when I read your post!

Morning Carol. Yes Carol told me she thought this was my best blog, I just thought she was being a proud sister, but I guess she was right as it seems to have struck a chord with my owls!

    Hope you feel better..

  22. Yes Carol I am having trouble sleeping! The last two nights I keep waking up listening for Ritchie. :(

My daughter called yesterday. They made it safely to Wyoming. She really called because Ritchie was really fussing and she did not know what to do. She had Mr. Lynn D and I on speaker phone and we talked to the baby and he calmed right down. Poor little guy I think he misses his grandma and grandpa time. He must be so confused.

  24. I think because we all know each other, thru the net, we don't have a "connection" of feel, so when one writes a blog on themselves or family, we get to feel that connection if only for a moment. The words bring us closer to the one who is writing the blog, and helps us understand them more..

    Dontcha Think?

  25. Lynn..

Yes I thought so.. hang in there.. WY is not to far away.. you hopefully can be there soon..

    Dontcha Think?

I most emphatically do think! And Lynn D, this was one of the best blogs for forging that kind of connection we've seen in the nest!

I can't wait to talk to my Mom on Saturday (our weekly phone call) now!

Scents and memories... Zona, you're right, scents have the most powerful associations with memory of all. I don't get may hits from childhood because West Coast scents are so different from the Northeast.

    ReplyDelete
  27. thats just amazing......I have tried and tried to remember what that lotion was......my Mother used it and every time we got in the car the scent of Jergens lotion combined with her Chanel no.5 always nauseated me........it didn't seem to bother anyone else and I never said a word but the funny thing is that now I seek out things that remind me of her....Jergens certainly being a big one......
This and ham sandwiches with a bowl of tomato soup....that was something that she made just for me....when it was just she and I....I know it sounds silly....but how I long for exactly that soup and sandwich......but only the way she did it.....and as simple as it was....I can't reproduce it.....I finally decided it wasn't the soup and sandwich as much as it was the gesture and how special she made me feel......
So thanks Lynn D for sharing that memory......I hope I can find a bottle....the Chanel No.5 just isn't the same without the Jergens.....

You hit a home run for me today....thanks again for sharing..

  28. Good Morning Hooters!

congrats on 1st and on your blog today Lynn. It made me smile and tear up at the same time. sniff. I think that the lotion did what it was meant to do. :)

My dad wore Old Spice- still love it. Whenever I need to connect to him, I take out his favorite sweater. I keep it in my closet and it still has the faint scent of "dad" on it- even after all these years.

    Have a good day everyone

  36. Hi Owls!
    ~
Love the blog, Lynn D. :D
    ~
It brought back memories for me too.
    ~
It was 2 years after my Father passed when my Mom brought Doug a couple of my Father's shirts that she thought he could wear. I smelled my Dad in them right away! I said, "Mom, have you smelled these?" She said, "What? They're clean." I told her to smell them. She did and smiled knowingly, but wondered how that could be. I told her I had no idea how, and it didn't matter. That moment, that scent, was perfect. :D

I put them in a ziploc bag to hold his scent, but after opening the bag a few times, the magic was gone. :( They were just shirts again.

You made me remember that though Lynn D, and I thank you.

  37. Good Morning Tina - Yes scent memories aren't always the ones that make you day.

I was thinking about my memories as I was eating breakfast.

The smell of lilacs makes me think of my childhood in Halifax. My mom always insisted that lilacs had a stronger scent in the East than they do out here. I think maybe hotter May days made the difference.

I smell orange blossoms and I am taken right back to Royal Roads and their military graduation. It was the first formal dance I ever attended and is such a happy memory.

There are so many scent memories. Zona, I read that same article about scent memories being the strongest.

My sister was three years old when she attended my Nana's funeral. There were a lot of carnations. My sister always disliked the smell of those flowers because it took her back to such a sad time.

    ReplyDelete
  38. You guys..

    Farrah Fawcett died today...

how sad- and tonight on 20/20 - barbara walters interviews a bunch a people - this was taped before she died.......

  39. DEEDEE: I understand just what you mean..there was so much love put into the meals our mom's made for us. Be it a simple sandwich or something that took forever like perogies..it was the love that made it taste so good.

TINA: Hmmmm...not loving the haircut..if I try to hitch a ride to Co, I'll definately be left on the side of the road... ;)

JAAAAAXX!!: My mom kept my dad's pajamas in a bag for years after he passed away..just to be able to smell the Stetson cologne he wore. After the scent wore off..she put them on his pillow, so she could reach out and be comforted by the feel of the flannel.

TINKA: The hardest thing about cleaning out my mom's closet is that it smells so much like her.

GOLDIE: I always loved Old Spice too..my dad wore it when I was very young..eventhough I kept giving him Aqua Velva for Christmas.. ;)

BEAR: How about fresh baked bread? I smell that in the gracery store and I feel like a bungee cord has snapped me right back into my mom's kitchen.

CAROL: "Dontcha think?".. I think you're exactly right.. :)

VIG: I can almost smell those brown sugar pancakes now..

I gotta get some stuff done..I hope everyone has a wonderful day!!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Zona - I know what you mean.
Sorting through my mom's things was the hardest job I ever had to do. My brother in law took two years before he could change anything after my sister died.

Yikes - I just remembered I have a dentist appointment in 40 minutes. Must run.

  41. yay! Jax showed up today~ I have a t-shirt that I sleep in sometimes and my son says that no matter how many times I wash it, even straight out of the dryer, it smells like me. I thought he meant it stunk, but he grabbed it and smelled it and got this smile on his face. I'll never forget that~ ....maybe that's why he's my favorite~ :D

  42. LynnD Congrats on first (yes, you are allowed) and congrats on writing such a beautiful and poignant blog. Thank you so much for sharing your precious memories with us.

That being said......You all are making me feel SOOOOOOO old! I love Jergen's Original scent lotion and have a bottle on my dresser. I have loved that smell since I was a teenager, plus, it really works well.

Until I was 4 yrs old, I grew up in Florida, living next door to my mom's mother and father. Sometimes, when I am at the pet store, I will get a whiff of a certain type of bird seed that will immediately remind me of my grandfather's chicken coops. It is a pleasant smell to me even though the chickens took my pacifier when I dropped it and tore it all too shreds. LOL

    ReplyDelete
  43. I have a sexy black nightgown that I have not washed since I was last with Custard. It never stayed on long but it has his scent on it. I think I better wash it now so I don't torture myself with it.

For about a year after my husband died, there was one of his flannel shirts hanging on the corner of the closet door where he left it. I came to think of it as the "crying shirt" because I would lean my face into it and cry, even while it remained on the door. He was a tall man and the height of the closet door made it seem almost like I was crying on his shoulder.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Tina, your Son likes your smell! I wouldn't get excited, he may like the smell of his dirty socks too lol!!

LynnD,Your blog was very touching. My Mother used Jergens too.
I keep her dress in my closet. I have one of my Father's aprons he used at his shoe repair shop. I can still smell the glue and shoe polish on it, a very potent memory!

MEK, I hope you don't run out of turlet paper! btw, I am having the "opposite" problem, yes dear friends. I am full of s--t!! lol!!!

  45. I am home. I thought I would save some time by going into the Vet's and leaving a big order before going to the dentist.
They had everything ready for me when I got back. They were helping me to the car with the bags when I discovered in all my organized confusion I had locked my keys in the car. I walked home got the dogs, walked back to get the car. I guess that's my senior moment for this month. My pets and I are off for a nap. See you later. Love, Tinka

  46. Outstanding blog Lynn....

    I have many scent flashbacks~

My Grampa on my Dad's side was a writer. He was an editor for the Chicago Sun Times for 30 yrs or so. He lived in an old Frank Lloyd Wright home in Chicago. He was a pipe smoker.

I loved going to his house and walking up the grand steps to the outer foyer to the Large Wooden Carved Door. Once thru that door you we're in this small atrium type room where another door met you on the other side. It was at that door that you would smell the faint scent of his pipe and once the door opened you would enter a long hallway that led to the kitchen.

On the left was two doors. A closet and then a another that led to his office. You always had to enter his house quietly as he was easily disturbed by sounds. If you heard the tapping of the typewriter keys you knew to pass by quietly and he would join us later in the living room. I always walked that hallway as slowly as possible as the sounds of his typewriter intrigued me and the smell of his pipe was more special to me than anything.

If any of you are old movie buffs and remember a movie called "Call Northside 777" or see it in the future, that is based on a story written by my Grampa called "Tillie Scrubs On" that was published in Reader's Digest. Jimmy Stewart plays my Grandfather in that movie.

Ah I have gone off on a tangent....thanks for taking me back today Lynn. Probably means I will run into a pipe smoker sometime soon that will leave me with a smile on my face and a wish that I was 5 again going to Grampa's on a Sunday afternoon.

    Michael Jackson Dies
Posted Jun 25th 2009 5:20PM by TMZ Staff
We've just learned Michael Jackson has died. He was 50.

Michael suffered a cardiac arrest earlier this afternoon at his Holmby Hills home and paramedics were unable to revive him. We're told when paramedics arrived Jackson had no pulse and they never got a pulse back.

A source tells us Jackson was dead when paramedics arrived.

Once at the hospital, the staff tried to resuscitate him but he was completely unresponsive.

We're told one of the staff members at Jackson's home called 911.

La Toya ran in the hospital sobbing after Jackson was pronounced dead.

  71. Aternoon Owls or evening.

I have read your posts and have loved everyone of your scent memories!

Tina I do have to say how sweet that your scent makes your son smile. That make my heart feel good!

Dee Dee you post made me want to make a peanut butter and Jelly sandwich and a bowl of chicken soup. My Dad would make this for us and he taught us to dip the sandwich in the broth. It was so good and I think you are right it is not the same as an adult.

Kgirl I just loved your description of your Grandpa's house. It made me want to see it in person. Pipe smoke and typing clatter seem to go together in my mind. I love the smell of cherry or vanilla pipe smoke.

Whabby make sure you ask your Mom what her favorite perfume is. Some day you will be glad you did.

Very weird day with all of the deaths. I heard it on the radio on the way home about MJ and it took me a minute to wrap my head around that as it just came out of left field.

I am tired off to eat something and watch the news.

I hope everyone had a good day with no swelling! I walked 22,092 steps today. I also did something I haven't done in years. I wore high heels to work! I wore them all day too! Take care all and hugs!

  82. Evening Owls....It has been a sad news night watching 20/20 special about Michael and Farrah.

TINA: NO...I don't have my house cleaned yet. Do you know how long it takes to clean up your mess from a few weeks ago? I sure hope ZONA doesn't make as big of a mess as you did.

ZONA: I can't wait to see you tomorrow. I will try and be more on time at the airport than I was for TINA but would you please tell you pilot not to rush and be 1/2 hour early like TINA'S pilot did?

I am off to the grocery store across the street to get some snacks for my company (grapes and diet coke). It sounds like a pretty easy list. I got lazy today and didn't go after I went to a late movie. MrD's list is much longer.

My friend and I went to see Ghosts of Girlfriends Past with Matthew McConnahy. It was at the $2.50 movie and we have been trying to see it for about a month. It was very cute.

Tomorrow my youngest granddaughter turns 9. They went with a lot of girls and moms to the Jonas Bros concert last night. My daughter said they kids had a great time screaming and dancing. They all got special outfits for the outing of dinner and the show and then each purchased their own t-shirt with their own money except the bday girl...her's was paid for by mom!

LYNND: I am like J/L...I am feeling old as I also use the old Jergens. I love the smell. I am kind of a lotion freak and have a few around but I always have Jergens in my bathroom by the sink.

Well, I need to get going....night all
