~ This Is A Drill ~

by Tina~in_ut

At work on Wednesday, it was announced that we would be having a drill on Thursday, and everyones participation was mandatory. We would be activating the Passenger Inquiry Center....that is.....the place you call in case of an aircraft accident. Oh the dread we all felt.

I realize it was just a drill, and that's exactly the first words out of Melissa's mouth when I was "activated" and went to the briefing room. "This is a drill. Flight 69 from XXX to XXX was involved in an accident." The second she said the word accident, my stomach turned and I prayed we would never have to do this for real. Everyone in the room must have felt the same way because we were all quiet and everyone seemed to take this seriously. After we went to the next briefing room for further instructions, we were taken to a restricted area to sign into the computers and phones.

I can't even explain the anxiety I felt. In my head I knew it wasn't real, but the thought that this could really happen was unnerving. AND....although I could receive a call from "the media", someone calling to offer assistance, or someone just wanting details, I KNEW I would be one of the "lucky" ones to get a call from a relative of a passenger.

My first "call" was from the wife of a passenger. She was mean, yelling, wanting information and wanting it NOW! I was able to get her "husband's" name, her name and phone number, but when I entered the information into the computer, I wasn't given any information that told me whether or not he was on the plane. I tried so hard to put the woman on hold to get help from someone, but she wouldn't let me and kept berating me for not telling her what she wanted to know. We had several people walking around to help us. They were all wearing red and easy to spot. When I finally got the woman on hold, there was no one available to help me. I had my hand up waiving like mad, and the next thing I knew, this man I had never seen before was there to help me. He wasn't wearing red. He was actually dressed in business attire. I was so nervous that I didn't care who he was. He seemed to know everything that I was doing wrong. He was such a help. The system we use for this process is something that we are not familiar with. We've never used it for anything else and thank God we haven't used it for what it's intended for either. I sent the woman's information in instead of "searching" the system for the passenger. When I clicked on search, up came the man's name. He was listed as a passenger booked on the flight, but thus far, we had not confirmed that he actually got on the flight. That is what I had to tell her.

If I've learned one thing at this job, it's never ever think you know how a person is going to respond. I thought this woman would start crying once I gave her the information. Oh NO!!!! She thought it was ridiculous that I couldn't tell her for sure if he got on the plane. And let me tell you right now....the people that they used to make these phone calls, they should be nominated for Academy Awards. They were incredible. They stayed in character the entire time and in an office where I'm constantly wearing a sweatshirt because I'm so cold, I was sweating bullets. That's how convincing they were.

Oh! And I made a big boo-boo! The woman was telling me that she wanted to know now and I was no help, and then I said one of the two phrases you are NEVER to say to these people. I said, "I understand!" What I meant was that I understood that she wanted the information, NOT that I understood how she felt. The other no-no phrase is, "I know how you feel!" Thank God I didn't say that one. She lost it again. I never really finished that call because she finally hung up on me. The next call came right in and it was the sister of a passenger. Just my luck! I wanted a "media call."

Afterwards, I learned that the man who had helped me was the person who designed the computer program we were using. He was so nice and helpful. In the debriefing room, we were treated to homemade cookies! Since I'm the type of person who likes to let management know how something works and offer suggestions on how to make it better, I did just that. As crazy as it seems, I also asked if we could do this more often......just in case~

  2. TINA: This was a very interesting blog. I felt like I was reading a book and couldn't wait to get to the end. This must have been quite an experience for you to participate in at work. I think your job always sounds so interesting. I hope you never have to do this for real. I could see how a spouse or family member would be with you wanting to know everything and not understanding why you don't have it all in front of you. I sure would hate to be the person that has to tell a loved one that their person did board the plane. Another good blog (as always). Glad you at least got some cookies afterward.

ZONA: What do you mean..."how about those Raiders"? Are there even any to play the game this week or are they all in jail? Did they even win last week? We won our first game...although, I am sure you already know from your Bronco fan husband! (we play you this week MO)

JODI: I love you new hairstyle and the ala natural looks very nice on you.

BEAR: I haven't given up..I am still calculating but your typo just completely through me off as you know I am "Johnny On The Spot" when it comes to your Wednesday blogs.

We have a busy weekend...going to the mtns on Saturday to look at the fall colors and dinner, Bronco party at our house Sunday and I am cooking for 11, watch girls tonight and take them to soccer on Saturday and by then it will be Monday.

Ok..well I think I will go to bed I mean take a nap now that I am one the blog so early today.

JUST/LIN; Hope you are feeling better and able to eat something not soft soon.

  6. Tina,
Congrats on being #1 again. I think she sets an alarm, runs to the computer signs on and then runs back to bed. Too funny!!

I read about your drill experience and that is one way to get your blood pressure up for sure. Your suggestion was a great one. I think continually have those drills would ease the tension with the employees if the real thing did take place. Great Suggestion!

I worked in a very similar situation but mine was the cable splicer was hanging from a pole 40 feet in the air and I had to come up with a solution to get a cable and pair for a work order. Stress to say the least. Sometimes they could be a little nasty so I would always say, "do you really want the cable/pair or do you want to have a lesson on manners". Now they have fiber optic all over the place and that has eliminated alot of the frustration in the job.

Now onto the lego personel you have for your picture. I am so familiar with lego creations. My grandson has many, many lego's. His favorite fun time to be creative.

Whabby, I left a message on the previous comment page for you.

Tina I am glad you saved this blog for after my RETURN FLIGHT HOME! Lord love a duck I was sweating just reading it. Though I am glad to know you are doing drills, especially since you are trying out new software.

  10. Tina I liked your blog today. I wish drills like that weren't neccesary, but I'm glad they have them...just incase.

  11. Dianne: LOL! Still, I'm sorry about that typo! I wish I could insert the comment where I corrected it above the blog! LOL!

Tina, that was just vivid! Very well described... I was sweating right along with you. It didn't help that I was wakened up this morning early by a dream where I was on a plane that was ascending out of some airport or another and had to turn back because of some problem that was causing all kinds of smoke to be visible out the window. The last thing I remember as the plane spiraled in to what was obviously going to be a life-endind crash was: Emergency landing procedures.

I kid you not... this just happened about 40 minutes ago! So your blog hit home!

Good morning, Jodi, 'weenie, Lynn D, and Shirley (the real Shirley...)!

Gloria: Going to check out A51...

  12. Good Morning Hooters!

~tina, your blog made my heart race.

I could feel your fear and I never want to be the person on the phone calling. As you know, my son is in the air for a living- everytime I hear something about a plane my heart stops for a minute.

I am afraid to say that I would be that screaming meany trying to get info.

Remember my 50th birthday last week and I said it didn't bother me one bit? It didn't. BUT today my 6lb 10oz, 19" baby boy turned 30!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now I feel old!!

Hope everyone has a great day!!

    ReplyDelete
  13. Tina,I swear I was sweating along with you! Text me next time so I know not to read until I am fully awake! I think drills are a good thing. It may save a lot of aggravation in an emergency later.I am sure they will get the "kinks" out of the system. I hope you never have to do it for real!

Waving good morning to Diane-I-can't-believe-u-r-up-in Denver,Jodi,MO,Shirley,LynnD,
    Gloria,and later fly-ins.
I will be gone most of the day. Have fun. Someone throw in a joke or two. Tina has left me in knots lol!! Later..........

  16. Good Morning posters and postettes!

This is precisely why I stopped flying commercially. After a particularily horrifying incident in 1995 I had to ask myself....DeeDee...do you really want to die ...this way....with 300 people that you don't know?
And even if I survived the crash...I have heard that it always knocks your shoes off.....and it may sound shallow but I don't have a single pair of shoes that I wish to part with this way....and for that matter....not a single purse or carry-on bag either. And you know they tell you just to get out and leave that stuff behind in the burning plane.
With every commercial accident I have a reaffirmation that I made the right decision.
Last January when "Sully" put that US Airways flight down in the Hudson....Tina fired me an email and my first thought was freezing water and wet clothes......
And what the families go thru waiting to hear confirmation that their loved one was indeed aboard....of course with an airliner diaster the airline is in a delicate position and is very careful not to give any incorrect information....and coordinating their efforts is usually a monumental task. My hat is off to them because as part of an airline "family" the loss is personal for them as well.
But Lord I don't want the paper to say they found my eyeballs or perhaps one of my hind legs stuck in some mud somewhere....

But proper training can help the airline personnel who might have to deal with a crash situation be better equipped mentally...thereby making it a little less stressful for all involved......but I hope to goodness that Tina never has to go through it.....although it would be reassuring to know that my loved ones were in Tinas capable hands...

    I quote....

"Since I'm the type of person who likes to let management know how something works and offer suggestions on how to make it better, I did just that. As crazy as it seems, I also asked if we could do this more often..."

And after all that scary training....Tina still managed to get a little brown nosing done....thats my girl....don't mean to gush....

DELTA AIR LINES....WE LOVE TO FLY AND IT.....oops! DAMN!!

  17. Tina!

Your blog was so interesting, I kinda forget what the behind the scenes ppl do when a tragedy occurs. I hope as you do, that you never have to use that training, and I agree you should def have more drills.

So glad you got cookies as a treat, and love the pic you chose..

  20. Goldie,
I am laughing right now. Birthday's have never bothered me and I have always been very honest about how old I am. But when it is my kids birthday that is when I feel my age. May 10th of this year my oldest daughter turned 40 years old. Wow, I had such a lump in my throat all day long. I was having a hard time swallowing because now I would have to say, I have a 40 year old daughter. Yikes, give me those hi-lites in my hair, tummy tuck and botox here I come.

I have always told my kids, I feel older when it is THEIR birthday.

  27. GLORIA: I am your age and have a daughter that will be 41 in October and a son that will be 38 in November. What is even making me feel older is watching my grandchildren age. The oldest is almost 11 and the youngest 4 but they act so much older to me anyway. So, I am not only glad to know you on the blog and welcome you but to let you know that there are a "few" of us that are your age and we will be glad that we have yet another "senior" to remember old tv shows, songs, etc., that the youngsters on this blog have never heard of.

I am rushing out the door for a lunch and then to pick up the girls for the night but LYNN I will check out your pictures when I get home. BTW, when will you be coming to Wyoming? I think your grandson is missing you and you for sure don't want to go there in the dead of winter...trust me on that!!!

MO: Have a nice weekend and Happy Rosh Hashona . Be sure and tell us all your plans and what you are eating, etc., as I forget each year exactly what the celebration entails. Also MO, I hadn't gone to bed yet so how about you get up earlier and I will stay up later and we can chat?

    Gotta go....

    Shirley~ lq....get me tomorrow...I'm sleeping in~ :D

Bear~ Those dreams are so vivid....and unnerving....what I can't fathom is those people that pretty much fly for a living....we have a couple of guys who are 10 million milers~

Goldie~ I wouldn't fault anyone yelling at me....i know they want to know everything, and it's frustrating not having the information to give them. I think of your son flying....and really, we are one big family~

Mary~ I'll let you know next time~ It was kind of a last minute thing~

DeeDee~ oh woman...where to start~ Last night when you said "DELTA AIR LINES....WE LOVE TO FLY AND IT.....oops! DAMN!!" i couldn't stop laughing.....it's still making me laugh...thank you for that! and ya whore...I'm not a brown noser! I know the brown nosers at work....and no way in hell am I one of them! I make fun of them! tyvm!~ I really do think you should go back to flying commercially and support us! May I suggest an airline? (it's not American!) :)~

Carol~ I didn't even think of what you would have to go thru as well~ I would imagine your customers would be calling you too~ That would be emotional and draining for you, too~

    Kgrl~ Thanks for listening~

  29. Tina...What a very interesting blog! I would not want to be in the situation you described so vividly. I can relate to your feelings about it though. Years ago I worked as a Controller in the Accounting Dept of a funeral home, because of the nature of the business EVERYONE was taught how to handle a death or grief call. There was little or no chance that I would have to ever take one as there were many layers of backup but I still had to attend the monthly "refresher" meetings. There are certain things that you can never say, most are similar to yours and of course, you could NEVER put the caller on hold. As you've probably guessed, I did have to take one on occasion . My very first one will always stand out in my mind. Not just because it was my first, but because it was for a baby. The father was the person calling. As soon as he started to tell me why he was calling, he started sobbing. His voice wasn't just cracking, he was full out sobbing, with the ragged breathing and all. We were trained to be calm and reassuring, saying things like "Take your time" and "I'm very sorry" and then just wait for the person to regain control. There is a form at everyone's phone, kind of a "cheat sheet" , so that you remember to ask the important questions, name, address, was the death attended by a nurse or doctor if it was at home (if not you have to send the police unless it was Hospice Care). The problem with the form is that you can't read it when your eyes fill up with tears for the poor man that just lost his baby and is emitting heart wrenching sobs. I just sat on the phone with him a while. Oddly, after the funeral, he asked to meet me. As soon as I walked into the room, he hugged me and started crying again. This time I could cry with him.

Then there was the traditional honey cake and mandel bread for dessert.

  44. Ohh, I have some inside political scoop. One of my cousins cousin is a big wig in Washington. She works directly for the President. Anyhow, the ass who called the president a liar last week was totally drunk. Prior, there was a cocktail party and he was boozing it like crazy. Then he went into the wrong room. They took him out and then he started passing his card around while causing a lot of ruckus. When he finally went in and sat down, he was trashed!

MARY...we try to keep up most o the traditions at the various holidays. Sadly, it is lost on most of the younger generation. A lot of the younger kids are being raised either Catholic or with relatively no religion. Most of my generation has married out of the Jewish religion. I don't think any of the cousins in my age bracket married Jewish...except 2.

I have to go to a church service tomorrow, the girl that sits with me at night and does odd jobs in my office, lost her dad.. he was very sick and expected, but it was just him and her, and she took care of him. When he passed she called me to meet her at the hospital, as she did not want to say goodbye to him alone. I went and stood with her as she said her final goodbye, it was extremely sad, but I am glad I was there with her. As I think how much sadder it would have been if she had to do it alone..

CAROL...that was very kind of you to support her like that. I can attest that it is much harder to have to do it alone. You brought her much comfort in her time of need. You're a good person

I know, it is sweet of me to ask Eunice to come with me.. I ordered sandwiches for after the service, so don't feed her, she will have plenty of food to munch on..
