I'm sitting here eating my Lemon Creme Cake from the Olive Garden and reading about Christopher Savoie when it dawns on me: Buddy, you can't have your cake and eat it, too! I heard about him on the local radio station on my way to work one day this week. I was appalled when I heard his story and felt so sorry for him. Of course, I only heard the short version on the radio. After hearing "the whole story", well, as much as I could find reported in the news, I don't know what to think!
The radio station reported that Christopher Savoie went to Japan to get his kids, 8-year-old Isaac and 6-year-old Rebecca, back and was arrested by the Japanese police for kidnapping. It seems that he and his wife of 14 years divorced in January, and since she was from Japan and they had only lived in the U.S. for a little over a year, he was afraid that Noriko would take them back to live in Japan. He was right. She took them and when he tried to take the kids to the U.S. Consulate to get passports, he was arrested. The DJ's and I were astounded that someone could be arrested for trying to see their own kids.
After looking up the news stories on him, I don't know who I feel more sorry for. Christopher and Noriko are citizens of both the United States and Japan. They lived in Japan and their children were born and raised there. Christopher moved to the U.S. in January 2008 and Noriko and the children followed in June. Before moving, Noriko tried to get a divorce, but Christopher refused. He talked her into moving to the U.S, and when she finally did, Noriko found that her husband had been having an affair and now wanted a divorce. After much fighting, the divorce was final in January 2009 and Christpher re-married in February. Noriko was awarded custody of the children, but during the divorce proceedings, Christopher feared that she would take the children to Japan and asked the judge to not allow her to take the children on vacation out of the country. In cases of divorce in Japan, custody is almost always granted to the mother, and fathers rarely get to see their children. He didn't want this happening to him. The court decided to hold onto the children's passports.
In March, Christopher took his ex-wife back to court. The judge hearing their case asked Noriko if she planned to take the children back to Japan to live and she said no. She was asked this repeatedly and said no each time. The judge did allow her to take kids on a two week vacation to Japan in July. Noriko was given their passports and they went and returned on time. Two weeks later, Noriko left for good back to Japan with the children. The courts never asked for the children's passports upon their return from their vacation.
Christopher went to Japan and when Noriko was walking the kids to school, he took them and rushed to the U.S. Consulate. Noriko called the local police and they were there waiting for Christopher when he arrived. He was arrested and will be held up to 10 days in jail while this whole mess is worked out. In the United States, once Noriko took the children in August, sole custody was granted to Christopher and a warrant was issued for her arrest, but that warrant has no bearing in Japan.
I have a hard time with this one. You have a woman scorned, living in a foreign country, and she's incredibly bitter. Who wouldn't be? I don't know how he could expect her to want to stay in the U.S. at all. It's almost as if he tricked her into coming here. At the same time, she broke the law. But then again, so did he. And where are the children in all this? It seems that neither one of the parents are thinking of the children. What do you think?

ReplyDeleteI just rolled out of bed and had a sip of coffee and I got first? Tina I am getting worried about you.
ReplyDeleteYEAH LYNN! You got 1st
ReplyDeleteI was summoned to the blog by the word 'cake' this morning-now off to read it!
ReplyDeleteHmm, not that kind of cake story.
ReplyDeleteTina~ I totally agree with you about the conflict. I too was totally appalled when I first heard about this. Then all the other info started coming out and I am confused.
I have no solution since the Japanese laws are so different and the views on visitation are so different. That said, no matter what the indiscretions of the parents, they should not be kept away from either one- as long as they are not harming the kids.
Morning Glories!
ReplyDeleteMuwaaaah Goldie!
Tina I have to say that I don't feel sorry for the father. By begging the mother to come back to the US and then having an affair and asking for a divorce, when she wanted the divorce before, he knew exactly what he was doing.
The kids don't matter to him it is all about winning. If they mattered he would have negotiated a custody agreement that would have been in the best interest of the childeren where both parents would be involved with their lives.
As far as I am concerned he is a kidnapper. She is at this point I am sure terrified of losing her children. No win situation.
You are right he wants his cake and eat it too. Which proves to me the kids are possesions in his mind and not human beings that need both parents and a loving enviroment that would provide. IMHO
Good Morning!
ReplyDeleteTINA: I agree with you that the father tricked the mother into coming back to the US..I can just imagine the lies he told her to get her back here..especially since she had been on the verge of asking for a divorce before he left Japan. He must have known as he was trying to convince her into coming back that the marriage wasn't going to last. I only say this because they were divorced in January and he was remarried a month later.
I agree with LYNN..this was about winning for him..taking the children away from her to hurt her. I don't know how it will be worked out..but it sounds to me like they are going to need a judge with the wisdom of King Solomon.
LYNND: Congrats on FIRST!
HI GOLDIE! :D
Happy Saturday, Hooters! LynnD, Goldie & Zona; You're up bright and early today!
ReplyDeleteWhat a mess for those kids. Mom'll get arrested if she comes Stateside. Dad's arrested in Japan. What FUN future visitations will be!
LYNN...congrats on 1st. Did you roll outta bed right onto your computer? LOL!
ReplyDeleteGOLDIE...good morning!
ZONA...is it good morning or good night for you? LOL!!
CHI CHI...good morning! I can't believe how early you left coasters are up on a Saturday!
TINA...it is another case of using children as a pawn. So damn sad for the kids. There is a casae in N.J about a man trying to get his son back from Brazil for like 8 yrs. now. The mom kidnapped him, married a Brazilian lawyer and then died giving birth to another child. The father wants his son and the Brazilian courts won't let him have him. So sad.
SHIRLEY...Ummm, thanks (NOT) for the breakfast you left for me. You tart.
tart? cake? why are you all tempting me this way???
ReplyDeleteGood Morning Zona,Mo,bona.... and of course Lynn- I think I congrated (my new made up like Kate Gosselin word) you but failed to say Good Morning!
GOLDIE...I doughnut know why we are tempting you this morning!! bwahahahahaha!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteMo, I keep strange hours. I am by no means representative of any demographic on the left coast.
ReplyDeletedoughnuts?????????????????? LOL
ReplyDeleteI agree with Lynn D and Zona. The father sounds like an asshole!
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of assholes, I'm so sorry I missed all the banter last night! You guys "cracked" me up with all that talk of cockles and cock holes!
Which brings us back to my description of the father... :| :) :D
He should have thought about the consequences of his affair. The only ones punished are the children. This is what happens when selfishness rules your decision making. The only ones hurt are the innocents. Sorry, but the husband is responsible for creating this mess. Karma can be a real bitch sometimes.
ReplyDeleteGood morning!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on 1st Lynn!
Good morning to Goldie, Zona, MO, Bear, Bona and "L" (who are you??)
I also agree that the dad was wrong, obviously has no concern for the children.
The case that Mo mentioned is also very sad. The dad has tried repeatedly and without success to get his son back.
Today is MR. EBJ's birthday, he hasn't decided yet if he wants to go out for breakfast or have me cook.
Later some guests will be coming over, and we will have a big spaghetti dinner.
Have a nice day, everyone!
Speaking of cake, we are having chocolate mousse cheesecake tonight... yum.
ReplyDeleteMo: Yep! Mr. Lynn D had the coffee ready and sitting in the computer room with my cup! Our rule the one that gets up first has to make the coffee and bring cups! Besides you have to get up really early to be a farmer.
ReplyDeleteFarmer LynnD Congrats on getting #1.
ReplyDeleteTina What a tough situation! This is something people should really think about before marrying someone from a different country. You have different visitation rules, not to mention the logistics of how difficult and infrequent visitations would be even if they were allowed. I don't judge the father as harshly as some of you. I feel he probably does really love his kids and couldn't accept the fact that he wouldn't have much in the way of visitation if he stayed in Japan. Yes, he was definitely thinking ahead when he got the family to move to the US. Here, visitation is more liberal. On the other hand, the children are Japanese citizens. Both parents have broken the law. It's a no win situation. Someone is going to be very hurt, including the kids, as they will be losing one parent, no matter how it ends up.
EBJ Happy Birthday to Mr. EBJ! Hope you have a great day! How's little Nancy? I don't have FB so don't see updates.

ReplyDeleteLynnD~ congrats on first~ I have to say....i breathed a sigh of relief when you agreed with me~ whew~
ReplyDeleteGoldie~ would you like a chocolate chip cookie?~
Zona~ I thought of Solomon as well~
Bonachichi~ get some sleep~
Mo~ you made me lol with the doughnut~
Bear~ how are your cockles?~
Welcome L~
EBJ~ Happy B-day to the Mr.~
J/L~ I stopped feeling sorry for the guy.....I was in an International club in college and saw the "american guy" dating the "asian girl" and the cultural differences and the trouble it caused....not always...but most of the time. Christopher married there....worked there....raised his kids there....I really think he manipulated the situation by having her come to the U.S.~
Thanks for all the wonderful comments everyone~
JL I just sent you a couple pics, one of the birthday boy and Nancy, the other of Poe!
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday to MR. EBJ
ReplyDeleteSleep? Had some earlier this week! Wednesday or Thursday, I think. Maybe. It's tonight in EU, tomorrow in Singapore. What if I miss something?
ReplyDeleteHappy B'day to Mr. EBJ!
ReplyDeleteI'm sure Nancy will enjoy whatever birthday treats are coming his way. He does get a bite, doesn't he?
Thank you for all the happy b-days for the MR!! He appreciates it.
ReplyDeleteHis mother is in one of her "moods" (I think she has some serious depression issues) so decided to skip coming over today. He is a little down over this so I am trying to cheer him up.
I made a nice breakfast for us, Poe loved the wheat toast with cherry jam.
Nancy likes eggs and she and Poe both had some string cheese.
Bona, Nancy is a kitty that likes to take a bite of whatever we eat. She is sooo different than Paula was.
Between her and Poe, MR. E should be able to get a bite of his cake! haha
Safe travels to you, sounds like you are off in the wild blue yonder again!
JL I resisted getting Face Book for a long time. My mother finally talked me into it.
ReplyDeleteI enjoy it a lot more than MS, and so far have not given into the temptation of farming, quizzes, hatching, etc.
I have a question for you Face Bookers. A friend of mine sent a note saying she will donate $1 to breast cancer research for every "poke" she gets.
What is a poke?
lol ebj~ under her name, it says Poke...click on it....then she can poke you back and back and forth it goes....i'll go poke you~
ReplyDeletewait....that sounded bad~
ReplyDeleteTina, I haven't been poked by a girl before! hee hee
ReplyDeleteI just poked Bear. Bear have you been poked by a girl before?
ReplyDeleteJust poked Tina. My first time poking a girl.
ReplyDeletehee hee
Would I poke or pork Mo? :)
ReplyDeleteyou pork her~ lol~
ReplyDeleteI just poked you back....off to shower and go to a wedding~ bbl~

ReplyDeleteI'm just so TEDIOUS today...
ReplyDeleteI don't see what the problem is....
ReplyDeleteyears ago I was on Southwest Airlines and an attendant was esplaining what to do with the oxygen....you know....if ur traveling with a child apply yo max first then the childs max....if u r traveling with 2 children...decide which one you like the most.....
theres the solution...The couple in question have 2 kids...they each can choose the one they really want and divide them equally....one can grow up in Japan and the other in the USA...Then when the one in Japans comes to visit it will be like when Patty Dukes cousin came from England to visit.....
"Meet Cathy, who's lived most everywhere,
From Zanzibar to Barclay Square.
But Patty's only seen the sights
A girl can see from Brooklyn Heights — What a crazy pair!"
"Where Cathy adores a minuet,
The Ballet Russes, and crepe suzette,
Our Patty loves to rock and roll,
A hot dog makes her lose control — What a wild duet!"
OMG...I gotta sober up.....
Somebody call for help!! DeeDee's starting up!
ReplyDeleteEBJ; You could invite your MIL over for a bite. I'm sure Shirley wouldn't mind cooking.
ReplyDeletechocolate chip cookies? YES please tina~
ReplyDeleteshit, now I have to go bake some cookies, I can't get them out of my mind.
Too funny Dee Dee, "decide which one you like the most". HAHAHA!!
ReplyDeleteThat is a great solution...
Raise your hand if a hot dog makes you lose control LOL
Was that really the line from the song? I remember the show, but not the lyrics.
EBJ; I am safely home in SoCal for the moment. I could get used to this; working near home.
ReplyDeleteI don't know about you all, but I'd check Tina for "rashes" before I let her poke me.
Ahhh. Happiness is... An air cannon full of flour. It's like living with Casper.
ReplyDeleteJust popping in to say Hi to everyone...those poor kids, Tina, man, that sucks for THEM...I almost bought a lemon cake yesterday but dayum, Keebler had their evil fudge cookies on sale. So far the packageS (yes, plural, it was a very good price) are unopened...but it won't be for long I'm sure.
ReplyDeleteHope everyone's having a good day today...((((((Hugs)))))) to you all from me!
an air cannon full of flour....hmmmm..that does sound like fun....where would one get one of those??
ReplyDeleteYes EBJ....those are the actual lyrics....there are more....but I just used those......my favs...
and her cousin Kathy....
That was just Patty Duke in a wig! Didn't fool me.....
I usually don't dream. I think I lose that ability somewhere between the second and third xanax....but night before last I did dream....I was "The Miracle Worker"...you know Anne Bancroft played her with Patty Duke in that movie about Helen Keller.......I was Anna Sullivan...
But I was trying to teach Tina!!!
I just happen to have some video of my dream.....
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EHwoRFe70jk
I can't stop laughing.....i kept yelling...pull the chair...pull the chair...and she pulled the chair!!!~
ReplyDeletethen i was yelling...pinch her..pinch her!!!!~
ReplyDeleteoh....that's so like you....picking the food up off the floor and feeding me that! wait...no...you'd have Sweeper get it~
ReplyDeletedayum!~ ur strong for someone 30 yrs older than me~
ReplyDeletehow come i don't say anything?~
ReplyDeletelmbo...i pulled ur hair~
ReplyDeleteand spit food at you!!!~
ReplyDeletehow come i didn't bite you?~
ReplyDelete69~
ReplyDeleteDeeDee, that was some video. Like a night with MMA.
ReplyDeleteI think you can buy air cannons, but they're easy to make. Today's the first time I've seen flour coming out of it. A bunch of white pasty men running about.
EBJ Thanks for the pics of Poe and Nancy and Mr. EBJ! I can't believe how big Nancy has gotten!
ReplyDeleteKarinaBee LOL @ evil fudge cookies!
Looks like I closed down the nest. :(
ReplyDeleteHey JUST LIN...I was out, or I would have talked to you
ReplyDeleteI loved the old Patty Duke show! When I lived in L.A, I got to meet Patty. Her youngest son, Makenzie shopped in the store I managed and had a problem with his purchase. When he came to return it, he didn't know what to do (he was 12 or 13) and I helped him out. A couple of days later, this voice asks who Maureen is. I said it was me, I looked up and it was Patty Duke! She came to the store to thank me for helping her son. It was really sweet. I guess she was more like Kathy then Patty ;)~
ReplyDeleteHello Everyone!
ReplyDeleteI had a busy day... tomorrow is
Ar's b'day so we went out to dinner tonite to celebrate.. food was good, but the restaurant was hot as hell, we will all sweating, especially the Italian Stallions.. Its a small place and there were lots of ppl, so I am sure that was sucking up the air, and I am sure the several bottles of wine did not help..
Hope everyone had a good day!
Tina...
ReplyDeleteThanks for helping out with the blog today.. I surely do appreciate all your help.. Thank You..
We are in need of blogs, so if anyone has anything up their sleeve please send it off to me. Thanks
ReplyDeletecpgem88@gmail.com
Maureen!
ReplyDeleteThat was really nice of her....I hope someone snapped a pic for you since you are a fan!!
I am a fan as well....I I would have thought she would be a nice person...but you never know until you see them in action.....I went out with a group once in Dallas and Paul Lynde was with us....he wasn't funny at all.....he was the rudest...most pathetic DRUNK...it was very embarrassing and he ruined the evening.....I had looked forward to meeting him for weeks....what a disappointment..
So it is settled.. 5/1/10 MWMAG in Chicago.. I am going to start looking for hotels by the Chicago (ORD) airport, I am thinking to stay by the airport so all could take the free
ReplyDeleteairport shuttle to hotel and then back to the airport. If we stay downtown the taxi cab to the downtown area will be to costly as well as the hotels. So in my search of hotels I will be looking for a hotel with restaurants nearby so we can go out to dinner on Saturday nite..
I am also going to look for hotels with free parking, for all the ppl driving..
When I find a hotel that I think will work, I will get the list from Mo that she has of all the ppl that had interest in going and will e-mail you all as a group.
For now I will be arriving on Saturday Morning and will leave on Sunday, If I can work it out I might go Friday nite.. we shall see what works best..
So.. we will finally meet, I am excited and a little scared of traveling alone, but I can do it!
Hope many will come..
Now.. off to bed for me..
ReplyDeletec u all tomorrow..
:O)
DEE DEE...no, I didn't get a pic, but I did get an autograph.
ReplyDeleteThat sux when you have such excitement about meeting someone and they let you down.
CAROL...Happy Birthday to AR! Were the couple bottles of wine just for you, or did you share? LOL
Carol: Remember there are two Chicago Airports - ORD and MDW. I will probably fly in MDW because Southwest flies in there.
ReplyDeleteCarol, one of the nest's travel gurus is pensive about traveling alone? Seems to me, Zena Warrior Princess of the travel world needs to believe in herself. Everyone else does.
ReplyDeleteOne thing that is nice for me. I will be leaving Louisville on Saturday May 1 to go to Chicago. Everyone one else will be coming in for Derby..! And, when I go back on Sunday, everyone will be leaving Louisville! That is good.
ReplyDeleteI'm totally flying into ORD....and honey...if you find a hotel downtown....i will freaking shuttle everyone back and forth myself if I have to...I'm renting a car!~ I'm already picking up Mo~ :D The food is so good downtown~ (and it's all about the food....to heck with actually meeting ya'll~) :)~
ReplyDeleteMo: Please put me on the list of interested to meet too. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteOh Gawd, Chicago Style Pizza..I can't stand it already, I am dying for some! YUM!
ReplyDeleteI am nervous about meeting everyone! And, I have to tell hubby I won't be home for Derby...lol. Oh my. I might see if my son will come with me, he has friends in Chicago he could go and visit. He knows Chicago a lot better than I do.
ReplyDeleteBEBBI...got you're on my list!
ReplyDeleteCAROL...I will prolly be flying to Midway, too. I think I can get far cheaper flights to there. Actually, I may fly in a day or two earlier to Milwaukee and visit my bro, then Tina will pick me up in Milwaukee!
If my son comes, we might drive. It is only 5-6 hours.
ReplyDeleteOkay..I had a long day, I am off to bed. Goodnight all and sweet dreams!
ReplyDeleteThanks Mo for getting me on the list. Hugs and nighters
ReplyDeleteoh good...another driver! :)~
ReplyDeleteThis is the list I have. If you mentioned it, I put you on! If you didn't and you are on it, it is just wishful thinking! If I missed you, please let me know. It wasn't intentional!

I am still here, I paused to watch Lady Gaga on SNL..
ReplyDeleteMo..
Nope, only had one glass, but the
Italian Stallions and Ar.. did not need me to share, they did fine my themselves..
CAROL...there are a number of us smoking heathens amongst us. Do you think there are hotels that still have smoking rooms????
ReplyDeleteSHIT...now I have to start a diet!
ReplyDeleteTina..
ReplyDeleteI will also look into hotels downtown then.. I was worried about the taxi cab fare from the airport.. I would like to stay downtown as well, but again the cab fare is what worried me.. But, now that you are picking everyone up.. maybe we can stay downtown and eat pizza all nite..
Maybe we should also be grouped by intensity of hot flashes and those of us that flash a lot can share a room, so we will be on the same page regarding the a/c!
ReplyDeleteCAROL...we can take the EL really cheaply to downtown from either airport
ReplyDeleteI got 100! I got 100! I got 100!
ReplyDeleteSHIRLEY...get your ass outta bed and mark that down!
Mo..
ReplyDeleteSome hotel chains are completely non smoking.. I will look into that as well..
The other thing to note, is the downtown hotels are usually higher in cost..
I guess I will look at both options and see what I come up with.
Tina.. I think you better rent a minivan.. :O)
Mo..
ReplyDeleteI think you are talking about most of us, so I don't think its gonna matter.. LOL
Tina, also mentioned the EL, and one of the hotels @ the airport that I peeked at, mentioned the EL was close by and can be taken downtown..
Do you think if enough people are going, you could get a group rate with a block of rooms?
ReplyDeleteCongrats on 100 Mo.. well deserved for a piggy..
ReplyDeleteand...
No need for any diet's we like ya just the way you are.. :O)
Carol~ I was thinking of strapping the smokers on TOP of the car~ ijs~ :)~
ReplyDeleteMo..
ReplyDeletePerhaps, but a group rate is usually 10 or more.. not sure if we will have 10 as many will be doubling up..
Oh yeah, we can stay by the airport and all go on the el to dinner. Since we wont be driving, and saving money on the hotel, we can imbibe a little bit more! ;)
ReplyDeleteTina..
ReplyDeleteOh good, just what I need.. to be strapped to the hood of the MWMAG Mini Van, in the WINDY City...
TINA...can you put a rocking chair on top of the car, so I can look like Granny Mae Clampett? woo hoo!
ReplyDeleteMo..
ReplyDeleteSacbarb also mentioned a interest..

ReplyDeleteMO We better be careful not to cause damage to the hotel or restaurants.

That'll be fun to get through security. Especially the gas mask. LOL
ReplyDeleteGeez, MO! Why don't we just wear HazMat suits?
ReplyDeleteOhh, good idea...hazmat suits!
ReplyDeleteBTW, who is "L" that posted earlier?
I'm looking forward to having some Chicago pizza.
ReplyDeleteI was thinking it might be someone who started posting recently until trouble followed her here from the other blog.
ReplyDeleteoh...you mean me? nah....it wasn't me~ :)~
ReplyDeleteIf we all wear hazmat suits, it will easy to spot each other in a crowd. Again, maybe a bit of trouble getting through airport security. LOL
ReplyDeleteTina You ARE the trouble! LOL

ReplyDeleteHazmat suits are sounding better and better. Everyone's gas will be self-contained and we'd be protected from getting H1N1. ;)
ReplyDeleteI'm imagining us in hazmat suits with the butt area all puffed out from accumulated gas. LOL
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of gas production, have you all heard about the new Disney animated musical that features a lighthearted romp through the world of "women's troubles"?
ReplyDeleteThe working title: "Beauty and the Yeast"!
Groan!!!!! LOL
ReplyDeleteSweet dreams, Owls!
