Diplomatic Immunity

by Dianne_in_Denver

I wanted to write the blog today to see what some of your opinions are concerning Denver's most recent incident.

A plane was heading to Denver from Washington D.C. and a man was hanging out in the bathroom and smoke started to come out from under the door.  There was a Federal Marshall on the plane and when the guy came out, the Marshall tackled him.  When asked what was going on, the guy told the Marshall that "he was lighting his shoes on fire" and then he laughed.  At this point, NORAD called in some F-16's to escort the plane to Denver.  The passengers were held for four hours for questioning; police, FBI, emergency equipment...you name it...were all there to greet the plane.  We were getting minute by minute updates on our news as they knew more.  Finally, sometime later, it turns out that the "Diplomat" from Oatar was smoking and then stepped on the cigarette to put it out.

Now you all know that there is a fine for smoking on airplanes, making a joke about doing any kind of terrorist comments, etc...  This man was heading to Denver to visit a terrorist that we have in custody from a few months ago (which is irrelevant, but just wanted to throw it in).  This "diplomat" will not be fined, jailed or anything done to him because he has what is called Diplomatic Immunity.  It is for any diplomat who travels and does anything wrong.  He/she is sent back to their country to be dealt with if their country wants to do anything to them at all.

There are pictures as he left Denver with a smile yesterday. Rumor had it that United wouldn't let him on their flight. I don't know if that is true or not.  I guess he didn't get to visit his friend either.

What do you all think about Diplomatic Immunity?  I must be slow on things like this because I didn't really know about it until all of this happened.  Think how much money this cost the state and country and us!!!

  1. Di~ I had a friend on an airplane flying from Atlanta to SLC and she was told that there was "bad weather" over Denver and they would have to fly around it. This was at the same time as this little fiasco~

  2. Hello Pretty!

Diplomatic Immunity is a bunch of horseshit when it comes to everyday manners and rules.

There is a reason there is no smoking on a plane! First of all it illegal. It is also illegal to interfer with a flight crews duties/orders (you know, the part where they tell you no smoking!)

When I first read this story I was so frigging pissed. Asshole- that is all I could think of.

  3. My son earns his living on those airplanes in the sky. Anyone who does anything to endanger his safety and those of his fellow crew members and passengers is shit in my book.

Ok, I feel better now that I vented.

Hope everyone has a nice day!!!

  4. Hola!!

    My allergies are going crazy!!

But about this fool.....I think they should only be allowed to travel on aircraft equipped with "ejection pods" so they can be loaded up and fired out the ass end of the plane should this type thing occur.....

then let the fools country know where they can fetch him.....

or....send the SOB to my house...I will be happy to teach him some manners......

or.....lol...I have always thought they should have at least one "time-out" seat on commercial aircraft...one where you could...say....clamp electrodes to the culprits nips & nads....and if he so much as blinked his eyes...hit the juice!!

This would provide live entertainment for the passengers....getting to watch the foreign diplomat shake and rattle in the seat with sparks flying from his hair!!

I also think that it would help fill seats on flights....I know I would take a commercial flight with this type of entertainment......ahhhh....good times....

  5. Happy Hump Day Owls.

Good morning Tina. You look very Spring-y today at first.

    Goldie, Nice vent!

Lynn, Good point. Maybe the Marshall should have let the passengers "take care" of him.

    Dee, LOL

  6. Dianne, Because I live in the Capitol city there have been several incidents here that have involved diplomats and they have suffered no consequence, as far as I know. Since they know it won't affect them, diplomats seem to have no regard for the laws/rules of the country in which they enjoy this immunity. I should not lump all of them into one category, because there are probably some who do respect the law, but it does burn my behind when I hear of these incidents. In some cases, I bet their home country just dismisses the incident.

  7. Good Morning!

DIANNE: This kind of thing drives me crazy..people doing whatever the hell they want, thumbing their noses at our laws and getting away with it. I haven't heard of too many cases of diplomatic immunity being used..except on TV. Doesn't it extend to the family of the diplomats as well? I'm trying to figure out why diplomatic immunity even exists..it doesn't seem like that bright of an idea to me.

TINA: Looking goooood in FIRST! So are you finding that blondes have more fun? ;)

GOLDIE: YAY..you tell 'em! When it comes to everyone's safety..all the passengers, no matter who they are, should have to follow the laws!

LYNN: I wonder if giving him a swift kick is allowed?

DEEDEE: How about a diplomatic parachute..you break the law..you take your chances..happy landings! ;)

SACBARB: I'm betting his home country didn't think twice about this incident..they probably smirked at us too.

    JENNIFER O: Happy Anniversary!

    From 51:

    J/LIN: I didn't feel a thing..but then, I'm well insulated! :D

  8. Dianne: What a great blog! You have no idea how bad it is! I used to live in the DC area and it is RAMPANT there. The diplomats get all kinds of tickets, never pay them. They can pretty much have prostitutes, be drunk in public..anything they want to do and never get in trouble. Seriously a big and stupid problem to me.

  12. I'm not sure what I think of this. My first reaction was that too much was made of it. I mean F-16's? Really? But then you are thousands of feet above the earth flying in a tin bucket with wings, so anything could happen. Better to be safe than sorry!

    Diplomatic Immunity is a farse!!!!

  14. Good evening feathered friends!

DIANNE...I think that if you are going to get diplomatic immunity, you should act diplomatic. Use some manners, decorum, follow the laws and respect the citizens sround you. This guy was an asshole to the nth degree. I have a story about a diplomat from Qatar that was shopping in the store I managed while his wife was in the Cleveland Clinic. It is too long to write out, but if anyone wants to hear it I will tell you in Chicago!

GOLDIE...I can certainly understand your feelings regarding air travel...and I agree with you.

    TINA...I like your new look!?!

  30. crap, I thought I had all ready been here!LOL! I just finished reading.
I have heard of Dip. Im. (didn't want to risk insulting Diane lol.)
I think they can even evade rapes, murder and other horrible crimes! No one should have that much immunity!! I can see miner stuff like maybe car accidents since they aren't used to our drivers, but this plane/smoking thing just drives me crazy!

I am heading to bed. Have a great thong Thursday everyone!!

  31. I just heard on the news that my 2 buck Chuck is going to cost 7 bucks. The Legislature is drafting an initiative to raise taxes on alcoholic beverages. Wine will be taxed an additional $5, beer $7 and $17 on Vodka, etc. (BTW, for those who don't know, 2 buck Chuck is Trader Joe's wine). I think CA residents will be sobering up if this passes. Maybe I should load up now.
