Christmas Eve, My Tradition

remembering past Christmas Eve's for me
always bring a bright cheery smile to my face
since i was little, our dear Christmas Eve in
my family was bigger than Christmas day

my family, and many extended members would start at my
house were i grew up early in the day
as the fish had to fry, and since we had mounds of fish
early was the way to go

i watched as aunts and uncles starting the
cleaning process, of these slimy creatures
their preparations were endless
in our tradition we are to have
the Feast of the Seven Fishes
so yes, we must have at least seven kinds of fish served

and that they did
crab
clams
baccala
sugelli
smelts
shrimp
calamari
cod
and more

and each of these delightful wonders are prepared
differently, so our taste buds can truly do a dance
i watch with envy how now my mother does it all alone
when at one time she shared this task with her brothers and sisters
i now help her fry the fish, but with this is a ritual, we both begin
with the oldest clothes we can fine so we can ditch them
outside after the frying ends
the smell of frying fish can last for days
so to cut down on the smell of our clothes
out the door they go

the frying takes a while, but mom and i
have to down to a science, two frying pans
ready to go, me frying, her dipping the fish in a concoction
only she can make, and than handed off to me

split splat goes the oil, ouch and ouch again
but it is totally worth it
for in the end around our table the
fish will be celebrating with us
in only a way a perfectly piece of fish can

after our fish feast, we begin our next journey
onto nuts and fruits
our nuts are brought uncooked
my mother roasts them in the oven
on Christmas Eve morning
the smell thruout the house
is indescribable
nuts, such as filberts, almonds, walnuts and chestnuts
are put on the table with nutcrackers
and then the cracking sound begins

the fruit, grapes, clementines, and tangelos are all put in
separate basking around the table, so one can
crack a nut, and take a piece of clementine
and of course mangia

all that is left is coffee and dessert
and no holiday in a Italian household
would be without Italian Pastry on Christmas Eve
Calandra's is the best in my area for these pastries
I go early Christmas Eve morning and pick out all
the ones that my family loves
it is so great to end our quest with a perfect desserts
our night could not end without opening some gifts
so we all head to the tree, to call out names and
the gift giving begins

as the years have gone by, things have changed a bit
mostly the people, some decided to stay home
and do their own traditions
and some have left us, not to enjoy the holiday at
out our table, but certainly in heaven watching over us

this year my two eldest nephews will not be with us
they are going with their wife's family
so yes it will be different, ever since my eldest was born (30yrs ago)
we have been together for the seven fish feast

things do change, but the memories do not
and i can't tell you enough how this memory
of Christmas Eve has molded me
it gave me my foundation of what a holiday
is to be for our family
and it goes back to grandparents (on both sides) as this is
what they did on Christmas Eve
and all these so many years later
we are still doing the same

i am grateful for my elders
in instilling this into my parents, my aunts and uncles
and my cousins
its a wonderful tradition
and in time i know i will be with my nephews
some day, eating Christmas Eve dinner at their home
with their families

i believe in tradition
it makes us who we are

Merry Christmas
♥♥

CAROL - What a vivid description. I can totally feel the love. I love tradition!!! Tonight we have our traditional lutefisk and lefse with my hubby's family. Tomorrow is going to be somewhat different since I have to work til noon. But I am going to make the best of it!! Making a huge pot of my Mom's homemade beef veggie soup to take to my Dad's for supper. We were going to make the traditional oyster stew, but kinda pricey, especially when my kids won't eat it!!

DEE DEE - Love your BAM!!!

BONACHICHI - Enjoy your holiday ♥

Carol: I love your family's traditions. I love hearing about them and seeing them in videos! I hope you take a video of the fish frying that sounds amazing!!!
Traditions are wonderful. It's so nice to have family around.

Good morning Bonachichi, Carol and DeeDee!!

Happy Christmas Eve to all who arrive and Merry Christmas too. :)

My Christmas eve will be going to a church service with my Mom. Also, it will be quiet and wonderful for me. I love traditions but I appreciate this year more than most because I have been granted a new outlook and a new peace.

Jodi!!! Merry Christmas..thank you for the call. I apologize for not getting back to you. I have been crazy busy. Chel had her wisdom teeth out yesterday and I have been putting out fires here, there and everywhere.

Just finishing the wrapping after hitting Wallyworld at 4:30 am and the grocery store at 7:00 am.

Now to make the soup, oatmeal scotchie bars (Dad's request for dessert), and the requisite green bean casserole for tonight!!

BEBBI!!! No worries....and I'm glad you're going to have a peaceful holiday!!

Good morning!

Carol, your story reminds me of spending Christmas with my grandparents in Chicago. The whole family (also Italian) would be in Grandma's huge kitchen, getting everything ready for the big feast.

I got an early start this morning, my gingerbread dough is in the fridge chillin. After that will be sugar cookies.

Nothing like waiting til the last minute to do the baking!

I have a few gifts left to wrap today, plus need to run to See's to get some chocolate and peanut brittle.

Hope everyone has a nice weekend!

I thought I smelled nuts roasting when I woke up!!

but I was dreaming that I was a crudite and Javier Bardem had slathered me with ranch dressing and was about to eat me when I awakened....

it was my merry Christmas zorch on fire....

Carol, hold on to your traditions, and cherish them! Most of of my family's Christmas routine is gone now, a victim of many factors, such as the fact that two of the three kids live far away, and aging parents that made some unfortunate choices in their retirement years.

We do have one ritual that's survived, though. Every year my Mom plays the piano and the extended family gathers around and sings Christmas carols. We did that last night!

DEE DEE....Javier....yummo!!!

WHABBY - What a lovely tradition. My Grandpa Jacobson always played carols for us on Christmas Eve ♥

EBJ....I, too left the baking for today!!

I am done with everything except to fill stockings in a few minutes and then off to church and then to my sons for Christmas Eve. We will then spend the night at my daughter's and then have the day with lots of family tomorrow. I have been feeling physically better for 5 days and mentally better for two weeks....YEA!!!

I want to wish each of you a very Merry Christmas and good weekend to those that already had their special holiday (MO). You are all great friends!

DeeDee Congrats on bamming first today. I am afraid to enlarge your avatar to see what it is. LOL

Jodi No sense in making a dinner that half the family won't eat. My son is cooking us a prime rib for tonight. I will make the baked potatoes and broccoli with lemon butter. There is a large New York cheesecake in the fridge. Yum!

Just_Lin said...

Bear Gathering around the piano and singing Christmas carols is a wonderful tradition. We never did that. We never had a piano and none of us can carry a tune, anyway. LOL

Just_Lin said...

Tina Yay for sleeping in! I'm all for that. This year my grandchildren are here spending the night so I don't expect much sleeping to take place in the morning.

Just_Lin said...

EBJ We polished off a box of See's peanut brittle the other day. OMG it is the best evah!

Just_Lin said...

Bebbi You are adding new traditions to your old ones and changing some. Change is also growth. I hope you have one of the very best Christmas's ever.

Jewish people have Christmas traditions, too. We eat Chinese food!

Since I have moved back to Cleveland, Elaine would have a few us over every Christmas for veal cutlets, baked taters and yummy desserts. This year we all decided to stay home and veg. And maybe order some Chinese food!

Carol, I swear I could smell the fish while I was reading your blog! Thanks for taking my imagination for a fun ride :)
I had a houseful today. We don't have a "regular" tradition since my parents have passed. I rarely go anywhere Christmas Eve, but my home is always open to visitors.I cook all day and keep the food & drinks flowing! I am pooped! It was good to have friends & family bustling about! My Sister & Niece left about an hr ago. I am taking a couple Motrin and crash!
I loved reading everyone's comments. Do your best to keep those traditions going as long as you can.

Diane I was so pleased to read that you have been feeling better. I will keep the prayers going, but need to uncross a few things lol!!

Wishing everyone a wonderful Christmas/ Holiday. How ever you celebrate, be safe, happy and stress free!
MUAH!!!!!!!!
