My Library

by Maureen

I just read a cute book...Free For All by Don Borchert. The author is an Assistant Librarian in Torrance, CA. He writes sweet, silly, scary and sentimental stories about the library.

I first knew I would enjoy the book because he is from Cleveland and works in Torrance. I am from Cleveland and worked in Torrance! How could I not like it? LOL!

Anyhow, as I read the book I thought about how much my library means to me. I really started using the library a couple of years ago. And yes, I do mean "using" the place. I started to frequent it in the summer, when the heat was unbearable. Not only do they have free books, they have free A/C. I could take in my little bottle of water, cozy up in a comfy club chair, read a book, be cool and refill my bottle repeatedly from their fountain. It really was a lovely way to spend a day.

I have been a regular ever since. And due to budget cuts I have seen the library shorten their hours. But, I see the same employees since day 1. And I have come to recognize some of the other regulars, too! There is the guy that uses the computers that has a nasty mullet, the elderly couple that searches the web for airline fares in a regular basis, the kids that have their homework sprawled around them and Facebook on the screen!

I am thankful for the library and what it does for me. I always enjoyed reading, but somehow forgot to find the time to sit down and read. Since I started going back I have read about a book a week. Sometimes, a book a day! I was a slacker this summer having so much of my time taken up because of Joanne, but I got back on track in the fall.

The library also gave me the freedom to play on Facebook, watch some blog vids, watch some YouTubes and keep my mind sharp (SHUDDUP SHIRLEY) with games of Scrabble (which I win over 90% of the time!).

The library also opened my mind to classic movies and my love of Mr. Cary Grant! I have been able to watch many of his movies, watch wonderful clips on YouTube and read 2 biographies of him. I also became a fan of The Thin Man movies, Audrey Hepburn movies, Gene Kelly movies, Fanny Brice and a hole host of other great classics. I would never have discovered this without the library.

My library has given so much to me, that I almost feel guilty. I feel like I owe them something (besides the 30 cents in fines I owe!) in repayment. Other then voting for levys, I don't really know what else I can do.

I guess the best thing to do is continue to frequent it and support it and use it to discover a whole world of things I had yet to learn. That is what they would want me to do. Don Borchert says so!

Do you frequent your local library?

PS...the pic is of my library!

  7. Mo, wow, your library is huge!
I use the library when I want travel info or hear of a book I want to read.
I have donated books to our smaller village Library. I rarely go in that one because the gal that works there has zero personality!

I have a lot to do today. I hope you all have a good day!

    Happy Birthday Bonachi

  8. DeeDee: Thanks! I love the new place. It is nice. The only stress now is a dog that is in heat and another dog who won't leave her alone. It's pretty laughable when you are "getting any" and you have to sit and watch your dogs hump.. Kind of almost like porn..roflmao..

I had to take Chloe (the female) to my Mom's at lunch today because Bandit is driving me crazy and I really don't want Chloe to end up preggers. She's 5 and was always able to hide under the bed from Bandit, but now I keep them in the Kitchen all day while I am at work and she has no place to hide.

Too much dog sex information yet? lol....

Bonachichi: Happy Birthday to you!!! :) I miss everyone so much..can't wait to get my life in order enought that I can come back online more.

    Happy Birthday, Bonacchi!!!

  11. Happy Friday Owls.

Mo, I used to spend lots of time in the Library with my kids when they were were young. I tried to instill in them a love for reading like I have. They did love to read, however their choice of reading material was comic books. Eventually they graduated to more adult literature, like Mad Magazine. Well, I can't say I didn't try!

  15. Whab: ha ha.. ! Yes, but not now, I took Chloe to my Mom's for the weekend. Bandit got time out last night and bit me while I was putting him in the doggy house. So, I took away his piece of ass. Ha! That will teach him.

    He he..

  19. Gee, thanks everyone, for the bday wishes. DeeDee; I know you, more than anyone, know just how important today is. Thank you.

As far as libraries... I haven't been in one for at least 10 years. I think they might become a victim of technology. Sad, that.

I've many fond memories of begging my Mum to take me there every week. When I was 10, I think. Oh, the summer of reading. Titles like Christine, Valley of the Dolls, Helter Skelter. I loved reading, but those books scared the bejeezes out of me for years.

  20. MO: My dad used to take my sister and I to the library every weekend..we loved it. I still like going..there's just something about finding exactly what you're looking for to read, watch or listen to..and being able to take it home without taking a hit to your budget. The trick is, of course, to return it within the time allotted..hmmmm that's something I've never been able to master! Maybe someday... ;)

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY BONACHI!!

JODI: You're looking gorgeous today..as usual! I sure hope your headache goes away fast! :)

BARB: I hope the doctor can diagnose the problem and fix it asap! I hate that you are hurting..

Waving HI to BEAR, DEEDEE, MARY and BEBBI! :)

  21. Good evening feathered friends!

    Thanks for your comments today!

CHI CHI...Happy Birthday. I think the library can withstand technology, as there is so much technology in the library. And there is nothing like the feel of a book in your hands. There are a plethora of classes they offer and there is even one on using the Kindle.

DEE DEE...did you find your ring, eye and leg? Do we have to start calling you EILEEN? bwahahahaha!

  27. Maureen I haven't been to the library in years. I don't read too many book now. Years ago I use to read Danielle Steele and Star Trek books. My favorite books are Dr. Seuss ones. It's people like you who keep the libraries open. Good for you Mo! Plus it's not bad when the guys who work there are good looking!!

  31. Well, I have a Christmas red cast on my broken foot. This is the third time I have been to the Doc with the same complaint and they finally figured it out. It is a stress fracture, which I think is the Doc's way of saying "You're too fat." I have been to the cast clinic MANY times for my boys and even my Hubby, but this is a first cast for me.

I'm going to bed and hopefully to sleep. Sweet dreams to all the Owls and even you lurkers.

  32. Thank Mo.
I did have what I thought was a minor accident in our mall drive. It really looked like a small fender that would only take a little bumping back! I told the scared kid that hit me not to worry since he only had a small scratch on his bumper and a blinker light gone.
After he left I drove off, all of 20ft when I realized something bad was wrong. I think he hit me hard enough to screw up the alignment. I am hoping that's all it is & not my tie rod or more.
We had to leave it there since it was so late & dark. Tomorrow will tell. Keep your fingers crossed for me!
Have I ever told you when I stress, I eat!! Someone stop me!!

Nite all. I need to de-stress with out food lol!!
