~ Paper Sculptor ~

by Tina~in_ut

Los Angeles native, Jeff Nishinaka, is the world's premier paper sculptor with a prolific career that spans 28 years. Nishinaka attended UCLA and graduated from the prestigious Art Center College of Design, where he first experimented with paper art and sculpture. Nishinaka's commercial portfolio includes Bloomingdales, Galeries Lafayette, Sprint, The Peninsula Hotel, Visa, Penn State University, Paramount Pictures and Coca Cola, among others. Actor Jackie Chan, who is a close friend of the artist, owns the largest collection of Nishinaka's work. Nishinaka began working in paper quite by accident. "I have always wanted to be a painter, but while studying illustration at Art Center, I was given assignments in both a graphic design and fashion drawing class at the same time to experiment in different mediums, one of them being paper. That was my 'Ah-ha' moment. I quickly developed a feel for working with paper. From then on, I began experimenting with different papers, finding ways to shape, bend, and round edges on it. I wanted to manipulate paper in the least invasive way, to keep the integrity and feel of it. Paper to me is a living, breathing thing that has a life of it's own. I just try to redirect that energy into something that feels animated and alive."

I don't know which one I like the best...maybe the bridge with the colors. Oh hell, I love them all!

How extraordinary to even have the vision then the ability to bring it to life...amazing.

good morning Maureen...

Tina...does he make stationery? Or holiday cards? I'd like to order some....if you have the ordering info i would appreciate it.

My avatar today is in keeping with my leaning more toward a vegetarian existence and its called "Lets Gut A Bird And Gnaw On It" Thanksgiving theme...

In the picture you can see the festive removal of the entrails..heart..liver...gizzard...etc.

I think more and more all the time that I don't want to eat anymore animals....

Tina - Those sculptors are fantastic. I remember at Teacher College being given an assignment in paper sculpture. I struggled and struggled and just couldn't do it. Finally I found a book on paper sculpture and followed the directions to make a sleigh and 8 reindeer. Of course I didn't get a good mark on it because the professor knew I had got it from a book. It is really hard to create with paper. These are unbelievable.

Lots to do today. Wishing everyone a happy, busy and safe weekend.

Good Morning Zona-My-Baby - It's fun having husbands home but why does it get exhausting? I guess it's because they put us out of our own little routines. I am always encouraging Jack to give the trout business over to my son. Then again having him here all the time negates the fun of having him return home each day. The "fur babies" and I are always so happy to see the truck pull into the driveway. Even the cat likes it.

Just one more half hour and my babies return from their grooming and we can all have a nap. The house is so quiet without them.

Good morning everyone. Today should ne a fun day-- my daughter is having a bday party/ luncheon today with about 25 friends. I'm ready but not time for me to leave yet. Maybe this turning 65 won't be so bad BUT I'm still a young 64 for a few more days

Mo-nice to see u shing at first and just to plain old see u

Shirley-I'm not artistic either. I can fold a letter for an envelope and that's about it

Michael--those could be beautiful note cards. I wouldn't be surprised if they do make them

Tink--nice day for a scooter ride?

Zona--go to that Eddie Murphy movie tomorrow and give us a full review

Guess I'd better do one more mirror check and then leave. Hope u all have a good day

Tina Wow, what gorgeous works of art. Amazing, really, isn't it?

Just_Lin said...

Shirley I was never very good at making paper airplanes, either. Love your pretty poppy, btw.

Michael I'm glad I didn't look closing at your avatar. Yes, when I think about how our meat is processed, it is disgusting. On, the other hand, I do think we are supposed to eat meat and fish, but not in the quantities that most of us do. Have you heard of the diet where you eat like a caveman....meat, fish, nuts, fruits and vegetables? As much as you want of those but no dairy, no grains. I'm not sure if raw sugar is allowed on it. Cheating is allowed, though, and you still lose weight if you follow the diet 80% of the time. It sounds reasonable to me.

Just_Lin said...

Tinka We don't get to miss them if they never go away, right?

Just_Lin said...

Zona I have a lot of Reese's cups left. Should I send you some?

Just_Lin said...

Dianne Oh, how fun! I hope you have a great time. Glad it isn't snowing on you. We're supposed to get rain tonight.

For some reason, all the patients were shouting "13, 13, 13" as I walked past the mental hospital.

I looked through a hole in the fence and someone poked me in the eye with a stick!

Then they all started shouting "14, 14, 14."

Hi~ Thanks for all the comments today~ I love Jeff's work also~ :D

Today I was a little lazy~ I got up at 4:30......IN THE AFTERNOON!!!~ Got something to eat.....got in the shower....and then went to the High School auction....where I accidentally "won" a scrapbooking basket full of fun stuff....I only had to give them $110.00.....I tole my hubby (who didn't know I bid on it) the the box of markers alone cost $150.00!!!!! Somehow, that didn't make him feel any better~ At least the money is going to the school! :D That's what I keep telling him.....so if I mysteriously die....it's either him....or Miguelito....You decide which one you wanna pin it on~ :)~

Tina~in_ut said...

Oh.....and I've missed Patrick~ :D

Tina Oh, I wish I would have been able to stay in bed until 4:30. Especially since it was raining outside and I LOVE to lie in bed and listen to the rain. But, alas, it was not to be.

At least your money went to a good cause. Also, I bet you didn't have quite enough scrapbooking stuff to get you through 2020. ;)
