I was actually looking for a different music video when I came across this one and I thought, "What a good subject for a blog!" I know as a child, I would never step on a crack because I might break my mother's back, but I don't think I have any real superstitions now that I am older.
I am kind of superstitious about one thing, though. Every once in while you hear of someone pulling some kind of scam where they will claim to be dying of some terrible disease when they really aren't. I just think that would be such bad mojo to even be putting that vibe out into the universe. It seems you'd really be tempting the fates and could end up with that disease or maybe one that's even worse.
So, dear Hooters, do any of you have any superstitions? Carol, SacBarb, or anyone else of Italian heritage, do you have an older female relative who will put the "evil eye" on someone? Anyone else have an older relative that may have had some interesting superstitions. It seems there were quite a few of them in "the old country", whichever old country that happened to be.
I'm hoping everyone will find this video to be as fun to watch as I did. The dancing! The clothes! The ladies who are wearing Olive Oyl hairstyles! I love it!

I am now on a three day weekend! YIPPEEEEEE! I am going to Pittsburgh (not exactly the vacation I had hoped to be on now!!!) with a couple of cousins to have lunch at Lidia's Italian restaurant. I guess if I can't really be in Venice or Rome, this is the next best thing!
I think I will be around much later today or evening, so I will be back then.

I thought this was funny...when I got to the hell hole last night, the dinner special was...roasted PORK loin!! How ironic! And NOOOO, I didn't have any!
The chef was experimenting with making corn dogs out of andouille sausage (sooooo good!) so we started breading and deep frying EVERYTHING! The best was a battered and deep fried buckeye! In case you don't know...a buckeye is an acorn shaped mound of chocolate filled with peanut butter!!! So good!

actually, I've been sorta lazy at night, cuz the dog's have been waking me up too many times late at night to go out!
I think it's just habit now, because I don't let them have anything after about 8. When they go out at 11 or so they SHOULD be done.
But, NOOOOOOOO! Here they come at 1:30...or 2:30 or even 4 am!!!!!

I am TIRED today for some reason. In fact I think after I'm done with this post, I'm gonna work my way over to the recliner for a little nap. LOL
Ok superstitions, yes, there are a few that stick into my mind that my mother and grandmother and Aunt always said when someone did it, or was just about going to do it. Like Do not open an umbrella in the house??? WHY??? It brings bad luck, everytime when my sons were little they would open that dang umbrella and I would say NO its bad luck, they didn't care they kept on dancing with the umbrella while I was praying not to have bad luck. Another one they always said was Never put shoes on the table or counter, Again BAD LUCK, Or Never talk about teeth why??? BAD LUCK, I do remember that one Just-Lin about don't step on the crack or you will break your mothers back, I told that to my kids, now my 7 year old will never step on a crack. LOL
Now for the Evil Eye, my sisters in-laws say that, and they are Greek. In fact they all wear an eye pendant around their neck so no one can give them the evil eye. They bought my sister one. I didn't know Italians do it, learn something new every day.

Well thats all I have for superstitions now, I might be able to pull a few more out of my head, but like I said I NEED A NAP at least an hour.
One more thing, they are investigating the murder of my girlfriends daughter, the police are now thinking it was an old boyfriend of hers, or girlfriend of his, or even her husband. They do think it was intentional, not a random act of violence. My girlfriend Julie talked to Connie yesterday, shes very upset, but shes comforted by the thought that shes with her Daddy now, and that she has always missed him since he died. Connie is a strong WOMAN she will get through this with help from her friends and family. She does have a very special Mom and Dad.
RENEE...it is so tragic. I am always trying to figure out how a person can take another's life. How they have so little regard for life. I can never find an answer. I just get sickened by the whole thing. Life is far too valuable and it's sad that some can not recognize that and take it upon themselves to end anothers.
BIRDEEEE...two words...DOGGIE DIAPERS!!! Hmmmm, I wonder if they make birdie diapers? My windshield would appreciate them!

I have lot's of supersitions...all imparted on me by my mom. My friends call them Frieda-isms!
I have the same as the ones mentioned, but also...if you talk about someone that has passed, gently tug your ear. Never give earrings as a gift or the relationship will end. Never drive a blue car. They go on and on.....!!!
I better head out, meeting the cousins in less then 30 minutes and still no face has been painted on!!

Just_lin...love that song and love this blog. As much as my rational mind tells me superstitons are hooey, I still do all the ones I grew up with. I don't actually want to find out if they are hooey or not....no bringing on bad luck here. SO I throw the salt over my shoulder when I spill it and I NEVER walk under a ladder or let a black cat walk in front of me. I am not fond of Friday the 13th and all ladybugs live in my presence. Okay, off to work I go and I shall avoid all sidewalk cracks as I walk!

Good Morning Goldie, I am going to listen to Just-Lin's song now and think about whether I have superstitions or not.
I think the nest is now empty. It's funny how often that happens when I arrive in the morning. hmmmmm.
Just - Lin - Thanks for the video. I really enjoyed it; brought back a lot of fun memories.
VIG - I just checked the calendar and there are no more Friday the 13's this year so I guess we can go for lunch on a Friday.
Maureen - I see your birthday celebrations begin today. Have fun.
Birdee - I have been thinking of some trick to keep your babies from waking you in the night. It has become a habit for them and there must be way of breaking that habit. I will get back to you if I can find the answer. Their bladders should 'shut down' at bedtime once they are fully grown.
Renee - Your mother and mine taught us the same superstitions. Have a good nap. I always nap after lunch. It makes for a better evening for me.
Mek - What kind of bugs got in? There is a lot of publicity in our papers lately about bugs getting into the hotels and rest
homes because we no longer use DDT. I was nervous about bringing all of my mother's stuff to my house but I haven't noticed anything yet.
Carol - Have a fun day at work.
The superstitions that my mom taught me still ring through my head when I do them, but that doesn't stop me from doing them. A few of them are the open umbrella in the house, and touching one's face when describing a deformity. One strange one was concerning leaving the house. Once you leave and lock the door, if you have to go back and open up because you forgot something, then you must count to 10 before you leave again. Other wise you may have an accident. I forget things a lot and that superstition comes to mind every time I leave without counting to 10.
Two things I do which I guess are superstitions are: always putting some money in a purse or wallet or else they may face poverty and putting a nickel in the present if it contains a knife or something that could cut. That prevents accidents too.

Walks to the end of hallway and swipes card over access panel provided. Floor panel lowers to a chamber beneath. Steps off floor panel and room lights up. Walls are covered with every size and shape of water guns and cannons. Cases of balloons are stacked, waiting to be filled with water. Three 500 gallon water tanks sit at the back of the room with hose attatched to them for filling the balloons. A large table sits in the middle of the room with a covered object on it. Walks over to table and looks under the cover...***

Just Lin I'm not much on superstitions, but I hate it when you are about to do something and someone yells "Oh no don't do that it's bad luck" and scares the crap (or dejecta) out of you.
There is some saying about seeing crows ...1 crow sorrow...2 crows joy...3 crows girl...4 crows boy...I don't know the rest.
Don't twirl your knife at the table and never cross knives on a table. Bad luck.
If you drop your dishcloth while doing dishes you will have company.
If a bird hits a window it means someone you know will die.

Tinka - living in the desert - the bug spray guy is just a routine maintenance thing that needs to be done so that you DON'T have bugs - but (since you asked) he did find a few things in our traps... and today, found several black widow spiders in the backyard - but he knocked their webs down and sprayed them REAL good!!!

Some Hispanics also believe in the evil eye.I have had strangers (women) come touch my hair when I am out in public. They tell me that they were admiring my hair so they must touch it. Perhaps if they don't touch my hair then my hair would all fall out in the shower as I shampoo it?
My ex husband was Hispanic and his sister's Mother in law practiced white witch craft and was paid for it. I always made sure to stay on this woman's good side because her daughter in law was very beautiful and thin on her wedding day and she gained 100 pounds in one year. There was no thyroid condition or medication that caused this. I truly believed her Mother in law zapped her with black magic!

ReneeEve that is such an awful thing. There have been 3 murders of young women here all killed by ex boyfriends.One young girl was thrown off a third floor balcony. She is alive but her spine was broken and she will not walk again.

J/L, the Itaians have lots of superstitions and my grandmother gave the evil eye a lot. My Mom used to wear a Italian horn pendant for good luck. I don't know if any of that worked. She also used to say never put a hat on the bed. I always put money in a purse or wallet I give as a gift, but it is just because I want to give the money. I had no idea it was tied to a superstition.
I don't believe Friday the 13th or open umbrellas in the house or black cats bring bad luck.
My Grandmother was VERY superstitious and I know there are a lot more that she believed, but I can't remember them.

Tina, I had my last baby on the 13th too! I requested it, because her brother is on the 16th of the same month. The doctor thought it was a strong possibility that I could go soon, so he induced me.
My mother is a full blooded Italian. When she was 22 she had to go to Italy to go get my greatgrandfather who was sick in the hospital. In front of the hospital was a witch and my mom had to flash her gold wedding ring in front of her, so that she wouldn't have bad luck.

I think we should all disregard the superstition about opening umbrellas in a nest and take cover...i think SHIRLEY is gonna pummel us with water ballons!!
CAROL...I had the pasta sampler. Linguine in olive oil w/ sauteed cubes of butternut squash, spinach ravioli in a sauce of walnuts and brown butter and cavatelli with sausage in a light red sauce with a hint of cinnamon. We also had REAL ceasar salad and breads - crusty italian, focaccia and rustic with a pesto or white bean spread.
We got totally lost once we got into downtown Pitts! I called the restaurant and the manager kindly stayed on the phone for almost 20 minutes leading us to the place! They only are open till 2 pm, but he promised that whenever we made it there, we would be served! His name is MATT and is my new best friend in the entire universe!! After we finished eating (and meeting Matt!) the server was talking with us and my cousin told her we drove almost 3 hours (including the driving in circles, going over one bridge then another and in and out of tunnels!!)to celebrate my big birthday. She walks back with the BEST tiramisu EVAH! I am still stuffed!
Then we went and roamed around some HUGE mall. I got home around 7:30.
I want to go again and have a panini there...they sounded yummo! And I want to spend some time going thru the shops that are a few blocks away in the little Italy district. I wanted to do that today, but my one cousin didn't want to. I will go again with friends and we will spend more time there.
