My Weird Neighbor

by Just_Lin

"Good fences make good neighbors" is a quote from the poem "The Mending Wall" by Robert Frost and I would have to agree with that statement.

I told you all that the recent storm knocked down part of my back fence. It was not the side where my "good" neighbors live but it is the side where my weird neighbors live. I won't go into the long history, as I have known them since they were adolescents, but there is now three brothers living there, all either in their 40's or early 50's. They can't stand each other and each of them has problems and is weird in his own way.

One particular brother has made the backyard his domain. He goes to the dumps and actually brings stuff back! I'm going to refer to him as Rat Boy. He has so much crap back there that it is just like a junkyard and that includes rodents. It got so bad that I had to set a rat trap and electrocute the ones that would come to my side of the fence in the evening. We live at the foot of the mountains so it is normal to see various critters in the night and a rodent or two would not have bothered me as long as they are outside and not inside. Seeing them come over the fence in groups was a little much, though, and I have now killed enough of them not to be seeing them anymore.

A while back I shared with you that several years ago I discovered Rat Boy's giant python in my backyard. He said it had escaped while he had it in a holding pen while he cleaned it's cage. Trouble is, it had been on the loose for days and he hadn't told anyone! Hmmmm...

Anyway, yesterday I talked to Rat Boy and explained to him that I needed him to clear an area near the fence so it could be worked on. He said he would do it that day and he would keep his dog in it's run (there's so much crap back there I didn't even know there was a run), that there were no reptiles (What?!), that he had surrendered that very large python to the Humane Society (Yay!) because it was costing him too much money to feed it 2 rabbits a week (Argh!!!!), and it wouldn't eat rats (Hmmmm) and it had started expanding its territory (??????!!!!!!!). Expanding........it's........territory? Of course I asked what he meant by that and he told me the snake had expanded its territory to include the street below ours!!!! WTC???!!!!! It was on the loose???!!!! I hope no one is missing a cat or small dog.!

Today I saw that nothing had been done about clearing an area by the fence. I saw him out by his truck so I went over there and asked him again to do that. Once again he said that he would do it today. I smiled sweetly and said very nicely, "That's what you said yesterday". His reply was, "It still is yesterday.........according to my clock".

So this is what I am dealing with. Who else has a weird, annoying, or troublesome neighbor? By the way, it is now 6 p.m. and still nothing has been done by the fence. I wonder if it will still be yesterday tomorrow.

***Note to Bear***

Maybe Rat Boy has gone through time dilation. LOL

Morning Glories!

Zona got first!!! Congrats!

Just/Lin do you mean my neighbor who shoots his pistol at all hours as he thinks he is scaring coyotes? Or the one who uses heavy equipment in his yard at all hours? He has no grass nothing just dirt he pushes around. Beautiful house and garage but barren yard.

As far as rat boy I would ask him one more time politely then contact the city about his yard being a hazard. It is also a hazard that he has a python on the loose. It may cause trouble but when your quality of life is affected then it is time to take action. Very hard to do but sometimes it has to be done.

I think you have been a great neighbor by putting up with all of the crap and solving the rat problem yourself but they need to have a reality check. IMHO

J/LIN: I would have been so scared if someone with a roaming python lived next door to me..omg..and rats too? Ick! Rat Boy sounds a lot like the guy that lives next to my sister. He has so much stuff in his backyard there isn't room to walk. There are a couple above ground pools with no water, a spa that hasn't been installed, three cars, two tents, a camper shell, a swingset and on and on. The grass back there is almost as high as my sister's 6 foot fence. It's just a mess. The city has actually been out to talk to him but he still hasn't cleaned up anything.

The Monkey Lady is still living behind us..she actually thought she saw monkeys dressed like ninjas in her trees. All but one of the trees has since been cut down..I think that was probably her daughter's idea.

We have good neighbors..but I sometimes wonder what they think of us during the summer..ijs.. ;)

Great blog today J/LIN..thank you!

Good morning Lynn D!

I have had my share of bad/weird neighbors. I've had a drug dealer who liked to party. A girl with a crazy boyfriend who would come and pound on her door at all hours threatening to break it in. There was the man who wouldn't put his food in the frig. He just kept it in boxes. The whole building developed a fruit fly problem. He literally had clouds of fruit flies in his apartment. Gross!!

Good Morning Hooters!
Congrats on 1st Zonabaaaaaaaaaaby!! LOL at telling them to "put it back". I'm not worried about the the size of the bill- I intend only to pay what WE think is fair in light of the fact that they did it without authorization.

J/L- Ick,ugh and have you thought of calling authorities on him if he is a hazard?

I have wonderful neighbors who love me. One loves me so much their dog comes over every night, comes onto the deck and looks into the patio door, then poops in the yard!! LOL- its ok though, she is so sweet, gimpy and Pepper loves her to death.

The worst neighbors I ever had where when we lived in an a 4 unit apartment building before we got married (yes, I know tina~ I was living in sin) and they were Asians who spoke no English.

Well after weeks of horrible cooking smells, there was another kind of horrible smell coming from the basement. Like dead body smell.

It was July in WI (very hot) and they had cleaned fish in the basement and left all the carcasses and guts in a pile in the middle of the floor for weeks. OMG. The maintance man was puking outside the back door when he had to clean it up- full of maggots and god knows what.

They moved out shortly after that.

Good Morning Zona, Lynn and Shirley!!

Congrat's on 1st, Zona.

J/L Good blog!
UGH!! Sorry you have to put up with that neighbor. I'd be calling the city everyday! Maybe he need's a calender too. ;o)

The neighbor's around here, pretty much keep to themselves and take care of their yard's. If not, then the neighborhood assoc. sends out a letter.
Sort of bummed that I don't have a weird neighbor story to share.

Lynn, your neighbor pushing dirt around...would like to watch that! LOL

Zona, "Monkey Lady"??... funny.

Shirley, I think I would have taken the water hose to all your neighbor's!!

Goldie! Ewwwwww!!!

J/L~ i can't stop laughing at Rat Boy~ that is so funny/sad~ We have neighbors living behind us and we really like the man, but his wife is a crack pot~ She called my hubby to tell him to keep our dog from barking, or she'd call the police. We thought that hubby (who has cancer) was back home sleeping during the day again and our dog was bothering him. Nope! He's just fine....and wifey works 10 hr days...she's only home on Friday.....WHEN I'M HOME!!! I hardly ever hear the dog! She also has this thing about her 40 billion trees and us cutting the branches that hang on our side!

Shirley and J/L, Thank's for the QOTD yesterday and today!! ♥

Think I'm gonna get out again today. It's suppose to be in the low 60's today. That should feel like 80 compared to what it was last week. Beside's, my horoscope told me to have fun today and forget about housework. Sound's good to me!

Dianne, Thank's for the nice comment about my g-daughter. She is nice. She'll be 16 in just under a month and still think's I'm fun to hang with. Hopefully, she'll still think so when she's 18!

I enjoy reading about everyone's kid's and g-kid's here. They all sound like nice, fun kid's!! ;o)

I'm off to the shower!!
Have a great day everyone!!

Good morning, HOoters.

Apparently, a neighbor on the street below ours called the police about the snake. Rat Boy told me he showed the police the paperwork to prove that he had surrendered the animal to the Humane Society. Rat Boy also told me that the snake nearly asphyxiated him. What a lost opportunity! LOL

Hey Zona, congrats on 1st today!

JL I loved your blog today! Boy, I have had a couple bizarre neighbors in the past.

Before we moved, we lived in a neighborhood where we had someone immediatly behind us.

They were Oriental, and I think she must have gotten drunk fairly often, as she would either stand out back, or open the sliding door and scream at her husband in Chinese.

The funny part was that while screaming, she would pepper the tirade with English swear words!

I would just crack up, if I sat up on my bed I could see her and sometimes would call my mom or friends so they could hear how funny it sounded, the screaming in Chinese interjected with F*CK YOU or whatever else she called him.

That lady had a filthy mouth, "F YOU" was the mildest of her vocabulary. She called him the "C" word which sounded really nasty.

When I lived in Hayward, there was a literally crazy lady next door, her name which I'll never forget was Jenna Landa.

She had many, many pets, when they died she put them in the freezer. She called the police on everyone, sued neighbors left and right, just a complete nut case.

People complained all the time and nothing ever got done. I was married to the first MR. EBJ at the time and she harassed us, called us names, had the police come numerous times.

One time I was at work (I worked swings back then) my ex called in a panic, there had been a shooting in front of our house. My first thought was that someone finally paid her back for all the misery she caused.

Unfortunately it was not her. I wonder sometimes what ever happened to her and if she is still living in the same place. I can't even describe how miserable she made our lives.

I hope your neighbor has taken care of the mess today like he told you he would!

We've had a rainy morning so far, it's kind of nice!

I'll check back, hope everyone has a nice day today!

Happy Monday Owls.

J/L, The houses across the street from me back up to the levy of the American River, so we see lots of critters too. About 30 years ago we saw a couple of skunks in our back yard during the day. Since they are nocturnal creatures, it usually indicates rabies when they are out during the day.

After much research, I contacted the Federal Trapper who discovered a whole family of skunks living under the patio of the neighbor next to us. They dug under the fence between us and would come to our veggie garden to feast.

My neighbor didn't want to trap them because "they had a right to live." My concern was, they probably were rabid and I had little ones that might try to pet a cute little kitty with the white stripe.

We finally let the trapper set up his traps on our side of the fence and he caught the whole family of skunks (11). Our neighbor was very unhappy with us. He still owns that house, but hasn't lived in it for the last 15 years. He just comes to visit it once every two weeks, and it remains empty the rest of the time.

Good afternoon everyone. I am on the run as usual. Tomorrow my contractor starts on my new pantry, so I have been busy.
This morning I got a call that my ex SIL had passed away. Tonight my sister & I are going to our home town to a funeral visitation. One of my school mates lost her Father. He was 88. He was a teacher/administrator, and his wife was a music teacher. I have known them all my school years. They were also our neighbors.
Fri will be my SIL, ,Marcia's funeral.

I am lucky to have wonderful neighbors. Sometimes we have small issues, mostly wondering pets, but all is politely taken care of by a phone call or visit.

Have a great week all!!

Good Afternoon everyone. It took me longer than I thought it would to get back on the blog. It wasn't my password however SacBarb. That seems to be working now. I will keep your idea in mind however.

I loved your blog Just-Lin. I also loved everybody's neighbour stories. We have a law here called the Noxious Weed Law. If someone has a messy back yard he/she gets a letter from the city. One is given a few days to clean it up. If he doesn't comply, the city comes out, cleans out the junk, gets rid of all the tall grasses and weeds and the owner is billed. It works quite well. If your city doesn't have that law perhaps you should lobby for it. We are not allowed junk in the yards and that includes too many cars or trailors. However when you get out of the city you see some real strange collectors.

Tinkatia said...

Zona is on the phone. Be back later.

MARY: I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your friend's father and your ex-SIL Marcia. My prayers are with you and their families tonight. {{Hugs}}

Zona said...

SACBARB: Your boys probably would have done just that..pet the cute kitty with the white stripe..you did what you had to do to protect them.

TINK: We do have laws that state if your property is a health hazard or not taken care of the city will come out and not only clean it up and bill you, but fine you as well. There are a lot of people who call in anonymously on their neighbors when there is no real problem...just to be annoying. I think this is why some of the serious calls fall through the cracks.

GOLDIE: Fish guts? Oh that is just gross..

SHIRLEY: So are swarms of fruit flys..ewww..

TINA: Are you sure you're cutting those trees back far enough..ijs.. ;)

BIRDEE: No..be glad you don't have a weird neighbor story to share.. :)

EBJ: I have a neighbor who threatened to call the city because our leaves blew into his yard. I told him Mr Z would be over to clean them up..he wanted us to cut down the tree..because "that's really the only solution.." oh sure..we'll get right on that..lol..

Just a quick fly-by... Dad, Mr. B and I were supposed to drive to Missouri to lay fiesty ol' Grandma to rest, who passed last April. She left her body to science but well, science didn't have a use for a 99 year-old woman. Anyway, we left last Wednesday by car.

The day before, we got news that Uncle Jerry had a massive stroke. 2/3 of his brain is gone. We made the trip, put Grandma in the ground and are now wondering whether to return with Uncle Jerry the way he is.

I've been bad about checking in; so much going on, but I have SatCom on my laptop, so really no excuse other than not wanting to drop bad news at the nest.

Please, no sympathy. Just wanted to let you all know the reason for my absense. I'll catch up on the blogs when I can. Hugs and kisses to all from the Show Me State!

What a great blog!
I am sorry for your troubles with your neighbor, but I was LMAO at you calling him, 'Rat Boy!'

My Mother has always said that each neighborhood has a weird one. So your blog, along with what she has said, got me thinking.
~
I have had to move several times, ( because of Doug's job, and am actually in the middle of one now) so I thought about ALL my neighbors that I have, and have had. Oh sure, I've had the drunks, the snobs, the nosey, the recluse, the sticky and the sweet. But, I have never thought of any of them as actually 'weird.'
~
So now I'm thinking,
if every neighborhood has ONE.....

I MUST BE THE WEIRDO NEIGHBOR!!=:O

One year I was upset because we had a wind storm and all the leaves that people had piled up flew down the street and into my circular driveway. It was almost knee deep. I almost cried. Then a few days later, before the gardener arrived, we had another wind storm and every leaf flew out of my driveway and headed down the street. That was a happy day for me.

I heard the scream but I didn't actually see him hit the boy. I was almost tempted to say I did see it just to get him punished but I didn't want to commit perjury. I did witness him trying to run over the little kids playing street hockey on the cul-de-sac. He thought it was his street and he had a right to do that. We did call the police that time. Hi all....

this topic is so good.....can't help but be funny in most cases....

in the late 80's and early ninties I had a neighbor with Alzheimer's....Rita....

My neice...Alicia...who was 8 at the time was staying with me one summer and one Friday night I let her have some girlfriends over to spend the night. Sort of a slumber party I guess...some of the girls were around 12 years old....I had left them screaming and acting crazy watching something on the television and I was in bed asleep...when Alicia awakened me...

NEENEE!!! NEENEE!!
What is it honey?
NEENEE!!! NEENEE!!
Alicia..calm down! Tell me whats going on!
NEENEE!....someones in the pool!! I think they fell in!!!
OMG!! I thought it was one of the girls!! I flew out there and there she was.....Rita....

Kind of late for a swim isn't it Rita?
YOU NEED TO HAVE THIS COVERED UP!! I FELL IN WHILE I WAS WALKING ACROSS THE PATIO!!

What were you doing back here?

Looking for your rake! You hedges and front yard are a mess!

I went and got her a rake and said goodnight.....

So Rita worked in my yard...in the dark...for an hour or so before moving on to the neighbors......

It was not unusual for Rita to do yard work for her neighbors during the wee hours....2 or 3 times a week....and she fell in my pool every week looking for that same rake.......

She worked in her gown and slippers with toilet tissue wrapped around her big hair-do......

It was a bit embarrassing...explaining her to guests at times....but Rita had been a dear friend for many years prior to losing her faculties....so I...as did others....just went along....and tried not to excite her......she had this soprano voice that would have every dog in the county howling if she got excited....

And boy did Alicia have a story to tell her parents when she got back home.....

Sometimes I would walk out to get in my car and hear a rustling in the bushes...thinking it might be a vicious dog or something....and Rita would step out with some weeds in her hand...... nobody weeded like Rita....

I miss her....and that toilet tissued hair-do....

Just_Lin said...

DeeDee Great story! LOL

In case some of you are wondering, it is approximately 2 days by car from Los Angeles to Moberly, MO. That includes about 4 hours rest in a motel and bathroom stops for about 60 seconds when we fill up for gas.

Dad has always loved those Drive-By-Vacations. Drive there, spend the night, then drive home. I hated it as a kid. This time though, he's willing to stick around for a time. He won't go see Jerry because he has insta-panic attack when he walks into anything medical, but he's spending time with his family.

Jeff and I, city-folk that we are, are bored to death except for chasing the peacocks off the top of our car. Mean little bastards, they are.

Just_Lin said...

Bonach There are a lot of peacocks in my hometown of Glendora, CA. My brother feeds them peanuts.

J/L: Weird neighbors, we had some who moved away (thankfully). There daughter accused me of breaking in their house and messing up her room. Anytime I would come by, she would make hand gestures and her mother just encouraged her. Right before they left, there was a massive egging in our cul-de-sac. It was horrible to live with. Another neighbor's yard ornaments came up missing. Another neighbor tried to be friendly and help the girl and her car got vandalized. Now that they have been gone it has been a much more pleasant cul-de-sac. No eggings, no hand gestures, lost yard ornaments or vandalism..yay!

Bebbilane said...

OH, and most of all..it will be a quiet winter because they would leave their dog out and go away when it was cold and the dog would bark all the time. I felt so bad for it..rain, cold, sleet, it would be out there. I called on it but they never really made them do anything except put a doghouse that was too small for the dog out there. It was cruel.
