by Shirley
I heard about this on the news the other day and then I saw this article on line:
Mass. principal bans students from saying 'Meep!'
DANVERS, Mass. – Who knew "Meep!" was a four-letter word? The utterance favored by bungling lab assistant Beaker of "The Muppet Show" has been banned at Danvers High School in Massachusetts after students said it to repeatedly interrupt school.
Principal Thomas Murray said the word was part of a disruption planned using Facebook. The Salem News reports that parents recently got an automated call about "Meep!" from Murray. He warned them that students who said or displayed the word at school could be suspended. Murray says the warning was needed because students didn't heed his "reasonable request" to stop the meeping. Danvers High sophomore Melanie Crane says it doesn't mean anything in particular.
Ok, who thinks this is absolutely ridiculous? If you don't then please explain to me why. Suspension for this is just crazy. IMHO.

In your face!!!!
Good morning everyone!
I look forward to all your opinions.
Fruitloops for everyone!!!!!!!
Shirley, Could I please have bacon and eggs again? Oh, and cake too, if it isn't too much trouble?
Nope. Scirish all I've got is fruitloops. Take em or leave em!
**psst...Scirish...psst...come on out back and I'll get you the bacon and eggs. I just didn't want everyone else to know, then they would be putting in orders.**
*tippy toeing out back***
I ate shirley! Oh honey.....I read this to the hubby and he won't shut up!!! Honey, we agree with the principal. He asked not to use the word and they obviously didn't listen to him so he took it to the next level. He better stand by what he said and follow through if the situation warrants it! It's not about the word meep, it's the intention behind it. The kids planned to disrupt the learning process, and that's not fair to the kids who want to learn or to the teacher. Okay, I'll shut up now!
Hi scirish!
Wow, Tina! I thought I was really hungry, but at least I didn't eat a whole person!! Isn't that biting (or eating, as the case may be) the hand that feeds you?
Shirley..
I see your taking lessons from Tina, first on your own blog..
ya know that is tacky right?
:O)
Hi Scirish, Hi Tina
Hmmm....Shirley, I was going to agree with you until I read Tina's post. Then I agreed with her. Thennnn...I had an idependent thought, (it does happen sometimes!) I don't think the Principal should have reacted to the word, I think he should have disiplined the students for the disruption. Period. I mean, the students will just come up with another word, how many words is he going to ban?
Ok, so maybe the principal had to stand by what he said, he had to follow thru to set a example. I totally get that.. but why would "meep" be such a big deal to begin with.. Unless the kids were saying it constantly to each other in the halls, gym, outside etc, and perhaps the teachers complained that the use of the word was a total nuisance. Perhaps when a teacher would ask a student a question he would answer with "meep" totally possible. If that is the case then I agree with the principal.. If the kids were just using the word for fun and not that often, then I don't understand the harm..
Tina..
"you ate Shirley?" I thought Shirley ate Birdee..
I am cornfused..
"cornfused"?
Oh sure Shirley.. cook for Scirish and leave us all to fend for ourselves.. Geez.......
Yes.. "cornfused" its a joke with my Italian Stallions.. instead of saying confused we say "cornfused"
We are total goofs..
:O)
Carol I left you Fruitloops.
Oh..wow, first on your own blog, Shirley?? ..I thought that was not politically correct. I think Tina is having a bad influence on our sweet Shirley!!
Congrats anyway though. :) We all know it is not your fault if you are being corrupted.
Good point on the blog, really dumb suspencion..sounds to me like someone is "power tripping". That is ridiculous to demand compliance and suspend someone over something so stupid!
I hope everyone is having a great day. I am having a Monday..but am hanging in there.
don't like fruitloops..
do you have any cherrios?
Hi Bebbi.... have a great day "stepping"
:O)
Shirley are you there?
Helloooooo Shirley......
(tapping fingers on desk with impatience)
I have to go to work.. Shirley?
(broke a nail while tapping fingers to hard)
:(
Well then I guess I have to starve, cause feeding fishing is way more important to Shirley then feeding me.
Off to work..
:O)
Hey.. did I get 25??
Yea, I think I did..
Shirley, Shirley.. plz make note..
I wonder if Shirley fell in the fish tank? Geez I hope there were not woman eating fish in there.. Cause that would be just a mess.. And quite smelly I would think..
:O)
Bye........
Actually Carol I was sunning myself on my island.
No I do not have any Cheerios, but I think there's half an apple on the counter left over from Halloween. Take the razor blade out first though. Have a nice day at work :o)
I'm off to mum's. Later!
Oh, good morning Bebbi!!
Morning Glories!
Congrats on first for your own blog Shirley! I knew this baby was rigged!
Well the principal sounds like a meeping idiot to me! What next Golly? I know beep beep. Lord should'nt he be worried about I don't know....drugs, date rape, sexual harrasment, guns, the list goes on and on.
Now if it was fuck I could get behind him.
I have been thinking about this and I have to say that I really think the principal overeacted. Suspension come on. one warning and detention or maybe let the teachers decide in their classroom and make the punishment a pop quiz where it would affect their grade.
Seems to me that suspension means nothing if you use it on everything.
I also wish that the adults would be more creative. Kids like attention, disruption, controversy. Why not turn the tables and create a meep day? Like on home game days where they can meep away. Pretty soon it would lose all the fun and the daring to them.
You have to out smart the little buggers.
SHIRLEY AND OWLS: This story kind of reminds me of in my day of the old show Mork and Mindy. Everyone at school was doing the "nano nano" but I think it was in the hallway not to the teacher. If this is disruptive to the teachers then something has to be done to take action but without being there it seems like suspension is a little harsh. I guess I would like to hear the teachers side of the story and then the kids and then give kids a couple of wacks on their bottom and back to class....uh oh...now I am a child abuser, right? I forgot that this is not the 50's.
I am up early for me, all dressed and cleaned up and ready to go to my foot dr and they just called and said their was an emergency and had to reschedule for tomorrow. They caught me 5 min from leaving so that I am thankful for as the roads are still a little slippery anyway. Hmmm, so should I farm, do laundry, clean, or go finish my sleep....? I have to think about that for about a second..sleep it will be (probably).
SHIRLEY; I am not fond of Fruit Loops either and it is the holiday season and a time for gingerbread, pumpkin or eggnog pancakes (I saw an ad for these at IHop) so could you whip up your batter soon? Thank you and quit showing favoritism to some (SCIRISH) for what they want to eat...not fair!!!
Ok...I am just going to peek at my farms and then lay down....seriously, just peek!
Meep, Meep!
Hello Hooters and congrats on 1st Shirley!!
I am so excited- just bought my BON JOVI tickets for their concert at the MGM Grand in Vegas in March!! Wahoo.........
Hope everyone has a great meeping day.
I hate you goldie! Give my boyfriend a bj for me!
GOLDIE: What did they charge for them in Vegas? I am interested to see how ours sell today for the price . I think they will sell out.
SHIRLEY: I can see both sides of this..the principal has to control this kind of thing before it gets out of hand..but I also think that the punishment is a little over the top. The school loses money when the students don't show up..and if a lot of them say 'meep' and are suspended, then their absences are going to be disruptive too. Remember when we were kids and had to write words we weren't supposed to say 500 times? Make it 1000. Maybe something that simplistic is the answer..no one is going to want to stay after school to do that. I think maybe I'm just showing my age..cuz my solution looks silly..even to me! :D
SHIRLEY: Congrats on FIRST! Do you have any Apple Jacks? I've already dealt with fruit loops today.. ;)
SCIRISH: LOL@ independent thought..mine actually scare me sometimes!
BEBBI: Less than 10 hours to go..hang in there.. :)
CAROL: If you're still hungry..I know of an island... ;)
DIANNE: Are you done peeking? ;)
LYNND: You would love the solution the priest uses to a problem kinda like this one in the movie "The Chocolate Wars"..
GOLDIE: WooHoo!
TINA: My..you sure are generous with your boyfriend! ;)
GOOD AFTERNOON EVERYONE.
SHIRLEY - I hope this principal is also paying as much attention to kids who are being bullied, or being beaten up.
ZONA - I think you are right about the disruption of so many missing students....And I also think you are right on about the detention and writing the word 1000 times. Not silly at all.
I guess my RIGHT ON kind of gives my age away also. :)
Happy Monday Owls
Shirley, congrats on #1 on your own blog.
I agree with Scirish in that the behavior should be dealt with instead of the word itself. Students should be disciplined for disrupting class, whatever the mode of disruption. I think putting so much emphasis on the word only encourages the rebellion gene to grow. IMO But what do I know. I raised three perfect boys (four if you count my Hubby). Perfect "what" I never figured out, however. ;)
From A51
Carol, LOL he was wearing blue overalls and a purple shirt. Did you see him too?
Jennifer LOL @ horny farmer men. Happy Birthday to Matthew.
J/L, Mandy played an excellent role. Had me in tears. Maybe you can catch it online.
Lynn, If I can't get in one way....
Carol, my family says 'cornfused' too. LOL We also say garbage proposal (for disposal) and other silly things.
I hope everyone is having a good day. I think I'll go check the harvest. BBL
Dianne- the cheapest were 59 and up. we went middle of the price point- got good seats too!
Meep!
Man, Goldie..I watched that Bon Jovi movie on Showtime. IT was so good. I had no idea the history of that band. I bet you are excited! Who is it here that loves Bon Jovi so much? I can't remember as usual!
Meep.
Good eeeeeeeeevening everyone! (said in my best Alfred Hitchcock voice). I felt like I was in his movie The Birds this afternoon after I got back from mum's (who was really cranky today)! There were all kinds of blackbird, crows and other birds out today. They were very loud and noisey and zooming past my window. I was not impressed!
FYI
I looked into the by-laws about being first on your own blog and in very fine print at the bottom of page 1104 it stated that "statistic taker are allowed to be first on their own blog, but NO ONE ELSE.

Hi Bebbi - I stopped in again woo hoo :) Just wanted to say hey! Hope everyone had a great Monday!!
Hello feathered friends!
JUST LIN...thanks for the QOTD!! It was just a natural response to TINA's blog!
SHIRLEY...I don't know much about this situation, but I have to say that there was a rule made and the students need to obey the rules or face the consequences. Sadly, there are too many kids that feel entitled and feel the rules don't apply to them. And even worse are the parents that don't support the schools. Maybe suspension is too harsh, but that was the rule that was set forth, so they know what they are facinf should they choose to disobey.
maybe I am just an old fuddy-duddy!
SHERI...Welcome!
BEBBI...Jon Bon is my secret hubby :)~
Amen, Mo~
and p.s....THAT's why JBJ is my boyfriend!!!!! ijs~ :)~
Scirish very good independent thinking. I'm impressed!
Tina you brought up a very good point. The principle HAS to stand by his word now or he looses his respect in the eyes of the students, the teachers and the parents.
Carol for the last time I did NOT eat Birdee!! I gave her head to you and...wait a minute...does Just Lin's avatar look familiar to anyone? Hmmmmmmmm?
Bebbi thanks for your opinion. Suspensions have always been hard for me to consider as a punishment. In some cases the student doesn't want to be in school anyway so they get what they want. I think suspensions are used more than they need to be. IMO
Lynn D I really liked your solutions to the problem. I only wished the principle had thought of some different ones too.
Dianne-sore-looser-in-Denver if you saw an IHOP ad for gingerbread, pumpkin or eggnog pamcakes then I suggest you go to IHOP and get them, cause the only pancakes I'm making are plain, blueberry, or chocolate chip. Oh and by the way "give kids a couple of wacks on their bottom and back to class" probably won't be a smart move for the school. ijs
Goldie you should put a sweater on. Aren't you cold? Congrats on the Bon Jovi tickets!
Zona thanks for your comment on my blog. I agree with you. No, I do not have Apple Jacks.
Lani thanks for stopping by and commenting on my blog. I hope your back is better.
SacBarb I believe every parent thinks their child is perfect don't they? I liked reading your comment. Thanks.
Yes Maureen you are an old fuddy duddy! But I still like you and respect your opinion (even if you're wrong).
So Tina JBJ is your husband too? Wow, the perks you get for living in Utah...multiple husbands!

SHIRLEY...the school my friend teaches at has in-school suspension. The kids still have to come, but they are not in their classrooms. Keeps them in school (and keeps the state funds coming!)!
TINA...because I am so generous to share my hubby with you and SACBARB!
SHIRLEY...I hope you aren't going to serve Grape Nuts...I hate those little rabbit turd looking pellets!
WOW...I almost got a 69'er!
That's a good idea Maureen. Are the kids made to do school work?
Yes, they have to do schoolwork all day. They are given their assignments so they don't fall further behind.
And if I wanted your opinion on my opinion I would ask you, you little tart you!!!! ;)~
Someone is a little grumpy tonight! hehehe!
I'm not grumpy. I'm cranky!
SHIRLEY: I think you are a little grumpy too. It isn't very nice to tell me to go to IHop instead of enjoying your cooking. IHop cost money and you cook for free and better (I thought I had best add that). I still don't think it is very fair that you cook special for some people and not others. Remember, I am one of the elders in this nest and need a special diet ---of gingerbread, eggnog and pumpkin pancakes. Oh yea, ok, I guess I won't swat the kids and send them back to class or you will have to get out the bail money for me and maybe you wouldn't do that either!! sniff sniff (feeling slighted by Shirley) sniffs turn to tears..Oh and one more thing.....I am having to deal with a Bronco three week loss and when sad I need to eat to feel better...now am I getting to your heart?
GOLDIE: That is a good price for Vegas tickets. I wonder why the concert in Denver is so much more? I would much rather see it in Vegas, I know you will have a great time. Bon Jovi to you is like Tim McGraw to me.
DIANNE...it is the 4th qtr and Cleveland is losing 16 - 0.
I am stopping by to say goodnite.. I will catch up on the comments tomorrow..
Shirley..
TY for the blog today!
Hope everyone has a good nite sleep..
:O)
Shirley I was going to congratulate you on being first and getting 50 and 59 and I was even going to pretend to believe you didn't cheat BUT....then I saw that you are blaming me for Birdee's missing head! Hey, Tina is the only one talking about head in here so I suggest you look in Utah!
MO Grape Nuts are good! Besides, it's Cocoa Puffs that look like rabbit turds.
scirish Tomorrow will you please whine at Shirley for me, too? I'd love to have breakfast with you.
Shirley Why did you eat Shirley?
Carol Congrats on 25!
LynnD I like the pop quiz idea. If the whole class has to take the test, peer pressure will eventually keep students from acting up.
Bebbi Sorry you aren't having a great day.
Dianne I guess the band charges a certain fee to play and the venue has to come up with that money plus their own overhead. Perhaps, the MGM seats more people so there can be a little more of a price break. I saw the Rolling Stones at the MGM Grand and they were medium category seats at $350 a seat! I know! Hey, once in a lifetime to see an iconic band. I don't regret it at all.
Goldie I'm excited for you! You'll have a lot of fun.
Zona That's a good solutions, too. Maybe the kids would get sick of it, then.
Slani That was heavy, man. LOL
SacBarb Excellent idea! Thanks!
Sheri Welcome!
Shirley I have no idea if you got 59 but I meant to type 69. :)
Shirley I think the kids are just being goofy and having fun. Yes, it is disrupting, I'm sure, but they will get tired of it. I remember a group of us being silly in 7th grade math. Everytime the teacher turned her back, something went flying across the room. She never actually saw it, which made it all the funnier to us. It was a hot day and she had the door open. Suddenly a shuffleboard-puck type thing came flying in and hit her on the foot. OMG! We laughed soooo hard and could not stop! My friend and I were punished by making us sit outside at the picnic table. Hello! We enjoyed our little "time out" and continued to be goofy as our "punishment".
Lynn D: This WAS very suspicious! The only other owl who routinely blogs and then gets first is Tina.
Tina and Shirley... Shirley and Tina... hmmmmm....
Bear Hmmmm...interesting.
Tina,I have no clue how to answer this. I would have to walk a mile in his shoes to get the whole picture. Schools are dealing with a lot these days. I know there is zero tolerance on bringing in drugs, weapons, etc. There should be zero tolerance on disrespecting School personal as well.
That being said sometimes punishments can be over the top.
Time for this owl to climb on her branch and hoot herself to sleep :)
Goodnight all'''
Not forgetting all the sweet lurkers :):):)
MARY: You are hooting too loud..,I can't sleep!@ shhh
Shirley, I know you wrote the blog. My comment was directed at Tina's answer. It was a thought provoking blog.
Sorry I left early last night. I had to get up early and go into the office today so I went to bed early. I meant to come back here after I checked my island and fish tanks but I forgot.
Thanks everyone for commenting on my blog. I appreciate and respect everyone's opinions.
