A Twist to the Traditional Thanksgiving Meal

by Maureen

I can't believe Thanksgiving is just around the corner already. It doesn't seem possible. The weather has been unseasonably warm so it makes Thanksgiving seem like it should be later then it is.

We are having a different Thanksgiving this year. It is going to be a very small gathering...5. Elaine, who is hosting it decided that we are not going to have turkey and the fixins. We are having steak, twice baked potatoes, vegetables and two desserts...monkey bread and pumpkin pie.

When I have relayed this to some people they are horrified. Blasphemous came out of one friend's mouth! It got me thinking (shut up, TINA!) about the day. Why is it wrong NOT to have turkey? Isn't being thankful for family, friends, health, peace of mind, life enough? Isn't being thankful for whatever food you are consuming enough? Isn't spending the time with the people you love, regardless of what you are eating enough? I think so.

What are your Thanksgiving plans? Are you staying with tradition? Do you or your family have a special thing you do for the holiday?

Whatever you do...

May your stuffing be tasty
May your turkey be plump,
May your potatoes and gravy
Have never a lump.
May your yams be delicious
And your pies take the prize,
And may your Thanksgiving dinner
Stay off your thighs!

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!

Mo~ I don't give a flying fig what i eat on thanksgiving....just feed me! We had crab legs and salmon one year~ I'm just happy to be with my fam~ :D

Good Morning Shirley~ I'm sure there's a rule that you can't be first on Mo's blog, so yay....I'm first!

p.s.!!!! Adam Lambert is a freak!

Maureen I loved the poem at the end! We here in Canada have already had our Thanksgiving, but like you said what difference does it make what you eat? With the economy the way it is I'm sure there will be a lot of people not eating turlkey this year. It's ok. Sometimes I would rather have pizza or Kraft dinner and hot dogs. My younger sister is one of those people who says you HAVE to have turkey. I say eat what you want!

Morning Tina! Sorry, you're about 7 minutes too late for 1st!

There is nothing in the by-laws that says I can't be 1st on Mo's blog. You're just jealous!

Ah Mo, love the poem! I have no plans. Just going to spend a quiet at home/work Turkey Day without the turkey. Just another Thursday for me. (I think the old man and kids are going to Missouri. Still up in the air.)

I hope you all have a great day!

Mo,

I say, totally go for it, the dinner menu sounds delish. I am all for change in foods.. And just think your cousin is saving a Turkey, oh but, not a cow.. :O)

I love monkey bread.. omg, that stuff is amazing.. yum..

Tina..

Adam is more than a freak, I did not like his performance as all. I think he should be on broaday doing theatrical shows. That is were he belongs. I enjoyed the show so much last nite, and then he had to end it.. My fav.. Jay Z and Alicia Keys.. wow that was awesome..

night.owls.sb said...

Shirley..

I agree, she is jealous!

Carol~ My fav was Keith Urban~! I'm so glad Jodi called me and told me not to let my daughter watch Adam! That was just wrong~ People used to not like MJ grabbing his crotch....this was so worse!!!~

Good Morning NN/LL~

I'm ignoring Shirl~ :)~

Mo as long as there is food, good conversation, drink and it is all relaxing who cares what is on the table! I'm with you baby!

Oh Mr. Lynn D would say and football to watch.

We are going to our daughters on Thursday and Friday or Saturday we will cook another meal for the leftovers! Yummmmm!

Have to fly more food coming to the food bank.

Good Morning!

MO: We are having turkey..but only because Mr Z cooks it. I don't do large cold dead fowl..yuck.

I talked to my sister this weekend and we decided no pumpkin pie.. I'm making strawberry cheesecake and apple crisp. There'll be no yams or potatoes..I'm going to bake butternut squash instead. Mr Z always liked those little hockey puck rolls..but this year he wants to skip them.

I think it's a good thing to make your own traditions..why be locked into the past?

Great blog today MO..and I love the poem..thank you!

ps/ Can I come have dinner with your family? It sounds delish! :)

Zona said...

SHIRLEY: Congrats on FIRST..by a mile..well..at least 7 minutes! ;)

TINA: I was pretty surprised by Adam Lambert's 'performance'..and that the AMA's let him do what he did on a show watched by young teenagers.

LL/NN: You're always welcome to have dinner here..we'll be having JODI's mom's famous apple crisp for dessert! :)

CAROL: I love monkey bread too..but always wondered why it was called that..

LYNND: There is nothing better than Thanksgiving leftovers!

We did all our Thanksgiving dinner shopping yesterday..the store was a madhouse. Mr Z got a serious case of the grumpys while fighting the crowds. I really don't mind all the people..as long as there's no rudeness.

Happy Monday Owls.

Mo, When I was growing up Thanksgiving was the only holiday that we didn't have something Italian for the meal and I loved it. And it was the only time we had turkey. It was tradition! (doing my best Fiddler on the Roof imitation) My kids like to cling to tradition, which makes it hard on their spouses, because they have different traditions and want to cling to them also.

I have encouraged both my married kids to start their own traditions that they could continue, but so far they aren't going for it.

Holidays should be about family and not just food. The older I get the more I miss those that are gone.

sacBarb said...

Mo, from A51, You mean there was more? It was very quick with both the guy and the girl, which is why I wasn't sure I saw what I saw. The girls really trashed Adam on the View this morning, too.

And I forgot to say in my first post that I loved your little poem.

sacBarb said...

Shirley, Congrats on #1.

Zona, LOL @ hockey puck rolls. They really do look like hockey pucks when they are burned. Don't ask me how I know that!

Good morning Tina (I think you are pretty), NN/LL, Carol, Lynn and all the other Owls. I hope you all have a great Monday.

Tinkatia said...

Good Morning everyone.

Congrats on being first Shirley.

I would like to wish all my American friends a very happy Thanksgiving. We had ours in October but I will be thinking of you and your big turkey dinners. Stay safe. Love, Tinka

Zona said...

BARB: LOL! Those rolls feel like hockey pucks when they hit you too..you can guess how I how I know that! ;)

Ok..here's one of the Thanksgiving dinner traditions I loved as a kid..putting black olives on your fingers and then seeing who could eat them the fastest! Did anyone else do this? We always got in trouble..but we did it anyway!

Boy..rolls flying..olives on fingers..not surprising that there was a kid's table in our house..is it? :D

TINKA: I wish you could come to dinner. It's going to be just beautiful here..78 degrees!

(What the hell is it???)

Hello Hooters.

We were just discussing this the other day. We are traditional here. We really look forward to the turkey and turkey gravy, stuffing, potatoes, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie. We really look forward to it and to the leftovers. Turkey dinners are one of my all time favorites.

Great blog Mo and that was a really cute poem.

Just_Lin said...

Shirley -- Monkey bread is kind of like a bunch of cinnamon rolls smashed together into the shape of a ring cake. You pull sections off with your hands to eat it. It's yummy. I've seen frozen ones at the gross-ry store.

ALERT FOR THE WEST COASTERS:

JBJ ON ELLEN RIGHT NOW!!!!!!

BBL I'm busy now.

Maureen said...

Good evening feathered friends!

1st I must clarify...I didn't write the poem...it was a forward! But if you all insist, I will gladly take credit for it!

I will miss the leftovers. And after all the dishes are done, we would gather around the turkey and pick at it for a while longer! I went to the gross-ry store last evening and bought some sliced turkey...gotta have them sammies!

SHIRLEY...grats on 1st!! Glad you double checked the by-laws!

TINA...if you weren't so busy admiring yourself in the mirror you could have been 1st! I love crab legs and salmon! Yummmmmm!

SACBARB...if you go to aoldotcom, there is a thing with still pictures and videos of Adam from last night.

TINA...I have to agree...Adam was a freak and I am glad you didn't let Jr. watch it. It was the topic of discussion all over the office today!

JUST LIN...so nice you get to spend the holiday with your mom. And I am glad you are continuing your traditioins.

LYNN...I say start a new family tradition and go to your daughter's house bra-less!! Just don't lean over the turkey while it is being carved! It sounds like the food bank is getting a lot of donations.

NO NEWZ...I'm sorry you have to work. Maybe if the fam is in MO, you can come home from work and pamper yourself with a bubble bath and a good book...or pop over to AZ and join ZONA!

ZONA...78*...I'll trade ya!

TINKA...how's your decorating coming along?

CAROL...lol@ saving a turkey...but not a cow! At least no piggies will be harmed!

SACBARB 2...I would love having Italian food 365! Maybe combine the two...turkey stuffed shells, cranberry relish bruschetta, sweet potato gnocchi, green bean casserole with orzo...

Damn, I'm really hungry now!

Maureen said...

JUST LIN...one day Elaine had 4 ofus over for dinner and she made 2 monkey breads. The 5 of us devoured one and made a good dent in the second one! perhaps the name should be changed to pig bread!

SHIRLEY...

We don't add the nuts or raisins. And we roll the dough into balls. Be careful not to layer them too high because when the rise they will go over the pan and the goop will make quite the mess in your oven!

INGREDIENTS
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
2 cans (16.3 oz each) Pillsbury® Grands!® Homestyle refrigerated buttermilk biscuits
1/2 cup chopped walnuts, if desired
1/2 cup raisins, if desired
1 cup firmly packed brown sugar
3/4 cup butter or margarine, melted

DIRECTIONS
1. Heat oven to 350°F. Lightly grease 12-cup fluted tube pan with shortening or cooking spray. In large -storage plastic food bag, mix granulated sugar and cinnamon.
2. Separate dough into 16 biscuits; cut each into quarters. Shake in bag to coat. Arrange in pan, adding walnuts and raisins among the biscuit pieces.
3. In small bowl, mix brown sugar and butter; pour over biscuit pieces.
4. Bake 28 to 32 minutes or until golden brown and no longer doughy in center. Cool in pan 10 minutes. Turn upside down onto serving plate; pull apart to serve. Serve warm.

I have been a bad owl lately. So sorry about that. I've recently taken a jon=b that was supposed to be "easy", but it's sucking the life out of me. That and the dang FB games you all suckered me into.

I used to cook the whole traditional holiday meals. I'm kind of tired of it now. This year I'll order burgers, chicken burgers, and all the fixin's from a great burger shop called The Counter Burger. They'll be good the next day (Thursday) and we'll have those whilst watching sports and other people getting drunk. So much more fun than slaving in the kitchen.

One year I had so many people that I had to put my homemade stuffing into Hefty trash bags so the flavors could blend overnight. 4 turkeys, a zillion potatoes and 6 pies. Too much work.

I'll try to be a better owl. Hugs to everyone. Off to see who has nicked my melons.

We have the normal Thanksgiving Feast, with all the trimmings. Our veggies are mostly Italian based, like Stuffed Peppers, Escarole, Artichokes, Sausage and Mushrooms, Potato with vinegar peppers..

My nephews are very big on tradition so they look for all the same foods that they grew up having on holidays. My mother does a great job of making them all happy..

Now I am really hungry!

Good evening everyone! I have been busy packing away things from my cupboards. My new ones come Wed.
I wasn't going to cook a turkey dinner due to the kitchen renovation, but I didn't want to let my son down. We only eat the white meat. Every year a local lady stops by and picks up the legs and thighs. I would hate to disappoint her. She lives alone and reminded me the other day, "I'm stopping by" lol!

MO: I liked your blog. We have Pierogos (my daughter will make them), ham because that is what the young people in our family enjoy and I make yeast rolls. We have a smaller turkey and all the trimmings. IT will be a nice day but for the first time, my oldest will not be here for Thanksgiving. That will be new for me. Starting new chapters, that is what life is about. And, someday, maybe I will have steak and potatoes for Thanksgiving instead of turkey too.

sacBarb said...

Carol, you have made me hungry too. I want all that stuff you mentioned.

I am watching Find My Family and I know I will not be able to watch this every week. I have been in tears almost since it started.

My oldest learned how to put olives on his fingers from my MIL and she died before the two younger boys were born, so their brother taught them. I never did that as a kid, so I just thought it was an Okie (my in-laws) thing. I guess not. LOL

Dianne/Denver said...

I love the traditional Thanksgiving dinner. I will be going to my daughters and I bring the stuffing (I make it pretty good). There will be about 15 of us there..my SIL parents and my ex and his wife, their son and kids and then Tammy and her family. My brother is out of town and MRD leaves in the AM. I love going to my daughters but hanging out with my ex isn't my favorite, although I should be used to it by now. I do like his wife and she likes me..they have been married for 35 years!

Mo, you blog is making me hungry all day long and now in the wee hours of the morning.

TINA, I did that Island harvest and even plowed for you...so good night all.
