For the most part, the calls I get at work are boring. They are the same thing day in and day out: stupid questions. My main job is customer service, but those challenging calls are few and far between now, for various reasons. I'm also newly trained for CRO (Complaint Resolution Officer) calls, but haven't had many of those yet, thank God. A CRO takes calls from disabled passengers who were treated poorly. We take these calls very seriously and to me, these are the scariest calls ever. We get everything from assigning blocked seats because the passenger has an emotional support animal or fused leg, to complaints because an ordered wheelchair was not supplied, to oxygen requests, or because we lost a passengers wooden leg! (that's another story!)
Today a lady called me and the first thing out of her mouth was that she had a lot of stupid questions. I thought, "You and every other person I talked to today!" ..... but I just laughed. Then she said I was going to think she was an idiot. That got me laughing. I told her that I had just hung up with the idiot! Then she told me the reason for her call. Her husband is on oxygen and needed to fly from Atlanta to Phoenix, but she was concerned because he needs it constantly and she found out that he could not use his own onboard. She couldn't figure out how he was going to get from the car to the plane and then off the plane to the house without us supplying the oxygen. You see, this man cannot even walk from his bed to the living room without it and she was sure he couldn't take his through security.
When we get a call having to do with any kind of disability, we are not allowed to answer any question off the top of our head. We have to look up the answer every time, even if we know it. If the FAA audits us and we answer without pausing to look up the information, we get fined A LOT of money. I don't seem to have a problem pausing! In fact, this woman was on hold for a long time. I looked up all the information we had on oxygen and was asking my boss about the situation. I even googled to find out where this woman could get oxygen for her husband.
When I went back to her, before I could even tell her what I found out, she told me her "story." Her husband was dying. He didn't have long to live. When he was told of this, his wife immediately set out to find the daughter he hadn't seen in many years. The man's ex-wife had kidnapped the girl when she was young and told her that her father didn't want to have anything to do with her. The girl was even told her father's name was something other than what it was. The lady found her on MySpace. She's 23 years old and has a daughter of her own now. The lady's greatest wish was to reunite her husband with his daughter. They have talked on the phone, but haven't seen each other.
When I told the woman that her husband could bring his oxygen as far as the jetway, that we'd store it for him during the flight while he used the oxygen we would supply, and then his would be returned once the flight landed, the relief, pure joy, and excitement in her voice made me cry. I've had nasty passengers make me cry before, but I've never had a nice one cause tears. She was so happy. In her eyes, I was responsible for reuniting her family, although we all know that's not true. I don't even know this woman's name, but the 20 minutes I spent with her on the phone will not be forgotten soon. Calls like hers are the reason I do the job I do~

off to read~
well crap.....i forgot it's mine~ lol~
Tina....LOL@ forgetting it was yours..Congrats on first! What a heartwarming story...Wonder why the daughter didn't travel to see him though, it would have probably been easier on the poor man!
MOrning Glories!
Yeah right you forgot it was yours! LOL congrats on first Tina!
That is a beautiful story and I was so happy you could help these customers Tina.
It's amazing what happens when we take the time to find out about people and what we learn. I really think that when we make contact like you did their story or message is meant for us. It to me is a teaching moment from God or the universe. Whether it means to slow down and appreciate your life or just pay attention to this lesson, it had landed in our laps for a reason.
When I feel tired or stressed or ready to throw in the towel at the food bank it seems a new person will come in and I get a teaching moment that humbles me, a gentle reminder that we are all one big human family. Sometimes we all need help.
I so hope that man got to meet his daughter and granddaughter!
Morning Scrishy!
From Area 51:
Mary, Dianne and everyone with dental woes. YOU are creeping me out! I read area 51 and was cringing the whole time. Kgirl lord I just about shut the computer down reading your dental post! Chills I tell you Chills!
Oh and reading how much it costs just to have dental work done. We need DENTAL Care reform in this country too! It is a huge part of Health Care and I wonder if the stupid politicians take that into account? Drives me crazy!
Oh Tina, I love this story! As someone who worked in a call center in the past, I can appreciate this.
Hello everyone! Sorry I only have a moment to drop in and say hello. My stepdaughter just started a 9-5 kind of job so my grandson will be staying with me during the week, probably from now until school starts but I have to say what a joy it is! Before we moved here, my stepson warned me his sister may try to take advantage but as far as I'm concerned, it is a priviledge and a pleasure to have him around! Next week he starts morning swimming classes. This week we'll be visiting the free sprayground (why didn't they have these when I was a kid?) in the mornings at the park before it gets too hot. It's a great way to let him blow off some energy so in the afternoon he's content to let me read to him. He will be 6 at the end of the month and he's already given grandma and grandpa his wish list, lol!
Okay, I hope to get back and read some comments later but wanted to say hello to everyone and let you know I've been dropping in now and then to read the blogs and comments so even though I'm rarely posting, I'm here with you in spirit. Happy day everyone!
Tina, dear, that was so neat. I'm going to picture a happy reunion in my head.
Good morning Caryn, great to see you!
Aren't those spray parks all the rage now!
Of coarse my hicktown doesn't have one, yet, but 30 minutes from here there is a neat park that has one.
The best part of all it is free!
Good Morning All......
TINA! I didn't even ask what you had done at your last salon appointment! I love it! Why its very...ah...full! And Janice looks nice too!
Thats such a sweet story....she was fortunate to get you on the phone.
So if I were flying Delta and say...my eye or leg was lost or misplaced.....you would likely be the one I would talk to? Right?
What about a lipstick? I lose more lipsticks on planes!! Could I expect to be reimbursed or get free upgrades??
Today I am not taking any chances.
I had "25" withdrawal. Now I feel better.
Congrats Tina on another great blog and being first again.
Good Morning Scirish, Lynn, Caryn, Iteach, Mek and Dee Dee. I will read the blog again and the comments and I will be back. I have a doctor's appointment this morning so I will be rushing. Love you all. Tinka
Good morning!
Awww I love these kinds of stories!
Thanx for sharing that today.
I also wonder why the daughter didn't travel to see her dad... oh well, at least they get to reunite.
Hope everyone has a nice day!
LOL@EBJ! That does seem to be an easier solution!
Tina, while you aren't personally responsible for the reunion, your airline is! Sometimes it's good to remember all the incredible things that flying makes possible. We take it so for granted, these days.
Tink: Nice march!
yikes~ I forgot to tell you...the daughter just started a new job right before the wife found her, so there was no way she could take time off this soon~ oops~
LynnD~ you always write just the right thing...thank you~
DeeDee~ sweetpea, that is Janice in the forefront and me behind~ :)~ You really made Janice's eyes bug out when you mentioned her name! :D he-he~ also...you wouldn't lose ur eye....I bought you a pouch for that, remember? And ur leg....yeah....those have been lost before~ Now the lipstick....there are set rules for lipstick....if a flight attendant finds it, she keeps it and ur outta luck~ If a rampy finds it, he keeps it, and ur outta luck. If a pilot finds it....he'll return it personally and.....ur in luck~ :)~
Good Morning to Scirish, Caryn, Iteach, Mek, Tinka, EBJ, and Bear~
Tina, your blog brought about an indirect point. In this Interweb age, when we are dissatisfied, we click a link and ream someone out. I've been guilty of this in the past.
In the last few years though, I have taken advantage of that "contact us" button to praise the people I interface with. It is so much easier to complain about service than to take the time to tell a supervisor about a positive experience and who was responsible.
Might I suggest that we all remember there are human beings on the other side of the phone/chat, and they deserve to be acknowledged for the job they're doing?
A short comment of praise about the manager of the local Carl's Jr. resulted in a framed certificate of appreciation for her. I know this because she showed it to me when I was last there.
It took two minutes to write that comment. Two minutes to make a fellow human being happy.
Tina Congrats on #1 and also congrats on your blog today and doing the job you do. It must be very gratifying when you can help somebody that way. And thank you, too, for not being in India. LOL
Caryn Good to see you here today. Sounds like you have settled in to your new home very nicely.
Good afternoon everyone! I am alive and well,,,sorta lol!
I had a rough night, but am feeling better now. I think the meds are working. I still have an earache from the infection, but that is not as bad as last night!
I got some wonderful suggestions from my sweet nesters and FB friends about Insurance Co. There is one Zona gave me that I will use with my reg DDS when he puts my cap in and future procedures.
I am fortunate to have put away a portion of my G.M. pay into a 401k. I am old enough now that I can transfer portions of it to my Ira account and withdraw with out a large penalty. I also take out enough to cover the taxes. It is my nest egg and don't want to deplete it so I will use the Ins. Zona suggested.
Thanks Zona !! MUAH!!
Tina, you had me in tears reading your blog! I pray that he meets her before he dies! I am glad the daughter is welcoming him. It breaks my heart to know how many years he has lost not knowing her!
p.s. always wondered about the oxygen thing.
Speaking of Airlines, this morning Mr Mary opened his cc statement and was hot! The airline we went through for our next Vegas trip charged him $12 for "reservation rewards" I guess it was a monthly bill added to our reservations. He has no idea how it got there. He called and got an automate message that offered him to opt out, which he did. We were given a cheap rate, and then all the "add ons" came! They had not included the price of the seat wtf?
Here are the extra charges (2)
Airfare $316
Segment fees $14
PFC (?) $18
911 Security $10
prepaid bags $30
seat selection fee $56
convenience fee $26
trip flex (?) $30
Mary, geez that is quite a bit of "extras" you have to pay.
OK I will march to 50!
Maybe I'll keep going...
Holy Buckets,
The phone has been ringing off the hook for hubby today. Four different companies called to talk to him today. It is a great feeling.
oops EBJ I hope I didn't mess up your counting.
67
lol lol
Hey Iteach nice 69 there!
I thought I was marching alone!
I honestly didn't even know you were marching to begin with.
Good afternoon everyone!
Congrats on 1st Tina!
Wonderful blog Tina! Too bad everyday wasn't like that. More people might enjoy getting up in the morning and going to work. I'm glad you were able to help them.
Mary that was so nice that so many owls helped you with the ins. thing.
I really don't know anything except how expensive it is and it makes me cry each time I look at my paystub.
sorry EBJ, I hope your not upset.
Shirley my hubby loves carrot cake.
Good afternoon Scirish, Lynn D, Caryn, Iteach, Mek, DeeDee, Tinka, EBJ, Whabbear, Bonacci, Just Lin and Mary.
Nice marching EBJ and Iteach!
LMAO @ Iteach not knowing EBJ was marching!!
Shirley the carrot cake looks delish!
Def. not upset Iteach, glad you marched along even if you didn't know it hee hee!
I have to think of something to make for dinner. It is too hot to turn on the oven.
TinaHO: I remember you telling bout that on the phone.
hey iteach thanks for grabbing that 69, keeps me and EBJ close..lol.
Mary...glad it is better, the anti-biotics will really kick in today, and you should feel even better tomorrow.
Carol: Hows your toothy?
iteach Keeping my fingers crossed that one of those calls for your hubby is the magic call.
Tina - thank you for sharing today.
i also hope that this gentleman was able to reconnect with his daughter..

Just finished washing my car. Now I can feel like I accomplished something today.
Tina - That is the most heart wrenching story. You should send it to a magazine or book like "Chicken Soup for the Airlines". I loved it. Thanks for sharing.

I can see the owls coming out of the nest to start marching. Let's see who has been here since I last commented.
Good Afternoon - Whabbear, East Bay J, and Shirley.
I can't wait to count them all.

I did it. I didn't think I could because this MacBook is acting so weird. I just bought a 2 year apple care package on it so I think I will be doing some phoning.
After I returned from the doctors and had a nap I have been lazy ever since. I must get something done. Thank you owls who commented on my trout farm pictures. It was kind of you.
I am off to do something constructive. LOL
I am commenting as I catch up... Mary commercial air travel sucks. I have found that if you have enough people, charter travel costs about the same.
Flying charter though, doesn't guarantee a luxury aircraft. I've been on planes that were only slightly better than a magic carpet.
*Note to Self*
Make own travel plans should I ever travel with Bonacci.
Kgrl LMAO!
Yabadabba Doo!! Philip (6) is riding his bike without training wheels! He just gave me a blog inspiration......
iteach, yea for Philip! 6 is such a fun age. You can still impress them with the simple things in life. I was so happy to read that Mr iteach was getting calls, I hope they weren't all from Jodi lol!
Bonacci, we are flying Charter. We like it because it is a non stop.
Kgirl, I was feeling pretty good until I started exercising on my recumbent bike, then the pain started in. Lucky for Mr Mary I managed to cook his supper before it got worse lol!
We have a Karaoke gig this week end. I am hoping the pain stays away long enough to get through it.
Caryn, you will have to take some pics for us, especially you GS.
BTW I don't ride my bike on my face lol!!
Tina, the food channel is showing how gelato is made in Italy. I am dying lo!!
Beautiful blog, Tina, and Lynn's response--equally spot on.
Hmmm, are owls genetically pre-disposed to periodontal issues? Let's get Zona to Google that. Hope all in pain find relief soon.
May bbl--don't want to interrupt or get trampled by the next march. I see 125 is looming. Duck & Cover!!
TINA...what a beautifully touching blog. It really does put our customer service jobs into perspective, doesn't it?
So nice to see BON'O back in the nest!
MARY...maybe a gelato would make your mouth feel better. I do believe gelato cures most ailments!
TURTLE...do you have any buckets I can borrow? LOL!!!
I wonder how MEK's hole is today!!
TINA: I love how you look on the phone..just as I had you pictured.
I used to underwrite mortgages in my "day" and so many loans were made to people that couldn't or shouldn't be receiving them but I can remember some where the people were so excited, could provide a budget from how they were saving and most importantly....buying in their price range. They would be so excited to be approved and it would make me feel good that I helped someone who was truly seeking the American Dream.
Hello to all as I can stay on long. Came home from a busy day with GD of fondue, mani and pedi and then Nana needed her nap so we are going to dinner late. We are thinking up our plans for tomorrow.
MARY: Hope you tooth feels better. I have been taking anti-biotics for six weeks (seriously since the root canal). Hmmmm, think something could be wrong?
Ok...need to fly.
MO!! I think anything too hot or too cold would about finish me lol
I am going to medicate myself and go to bed. Sweet dreams to all, and a pain free night to all that are hurting,(including me lol).
Waving at all the sweet lurkers~~~~~
Kgrl; I've been on planes that have experienced "technical difficulties" that require shutting down one engine or another.
Naive as I was, I'd always wonder aloud how far we could go with only one engine. It must be some universal pilot joke, because the answer has always been "all the way to the scene of the crash".
I don't even ask any more.
Good night, Mary! Hope things are better in the morning!
It is after 9:30 here in SoCal, and I am hungry. I don't usually get hungry. I usually eat a Lean Cuisine or 1/4 of those $5 foot-long Subway sandwiches (hey, $1.25 is an amazing deal for a meal!) around 1 or 2 in the afternoon. That's usually it. I don't like eating at night (dinner) because it doesn't make sense to me to eat then let my body convert that intake to globules of fat.
When I'm traveling and I can't quite decipher menus, I opt for McDonald's (filet of fish) which is known as "McShit" in other parts of the world.
The fact remains; I am hungry. I thought about why I am experiencing this unfamiliar sensation and realized that the last time I ate anything was Sunday noonish - except for my required Mountain Dew fixes.
I am by nature, lazy. I won't raid the kitchen. It's too far from where I am now sitting.
My point is this: If all the owls could perfect the art of laziness the way I have, we'd never have to diet again. I got on the scale (I had to pee, so it was only a slight effort to take the two steps from the commode to the scale) and found I'm 6 lbs lighter than I was before.
So do something good for your body. Become lazy. I will be happy to provide tips, free of charge, in developing this underutilized talent.
Bonacci Don't you think the point should be to try and be healthy? Your diet of nothing but Mt. Dew is definitley not healthy. I'd hate for your health to crash. Please try harder. :)
Kgrl, I think that as a fellow Hellraiser, you and I would have a blast traveling together. If you ever find yourself in CA, I'd love to ride up the coast with you (I call bitch, though).
If the CA coast isn't your cup of tea, Palm Springs is fun, too. Plus, I have family about 15 miles from PS proper, so we could stay there. I'll take care of getting a bike. We could wreak all kinds of havoc and have fun doing it!
Just_Lin, I realize health is important. Under normal circumstances, I always choose healthy foods with the exception on my nemesis, Mountain Dew. There was a time when I weighed 153. I had high cholesterol, high blood pressure and caught every cold, flu and parasite within 50 miles.
When I divorced the father of my kids, I was a nervous wreck. I looked like I had anorexia or some other eating disorder. After having not 1 but 3 strokes, I decided to make some changes. I worked hard to gain weight, drinking Ensure 4 times a day.
I gained 20 pounds that way, enough to get me out of the danger zone. Then I had blood tests and found that, though I was still considered "underweight", I was HEALTHY!!
I continued to aim for additional weight, but wanted the right kind of weight. I want the food I eat to count. I don't diet and eat what I want, for the most part. I'm absent-minded and become absorbed in my work, forgetting mealtimes.
My mom died this past year, in large part because she cared more about stuffing her face with crap than taking care of herself. She weighed 224 when she died. She was 5'3" (and yes, I'm bitter which Carol may allow me to write about in a future blog).
If you saw me walking on the street, you'd think neither "fat" nor "skinny". Your comment did make me think it wouldn't be a bad idea to snack on some fruit or nuts during the day, and I will take that to heart. I will also try to be more aware of making sure I eat every day. I see that as a gift you have given me, Just_Lin. Awareness. I thank you for that.
Just for the record, I enjoyed a marshmallow sundae, complete with whipped cream, nuts and a cherry just a couple weeks ago.
Bonacci I'm glad you are rethinking your eating habits. I hope I didn't sound bitchy. I didn't mean to and if so, I apologize. If you are too involved with work on the computer, maybe you could keep a dish of mixed nuts close by. Also, a mix of raisins and shelled sunflower seeds is very tasty. Maybe a little yogurt would be nice once in a while. If you eat a little bit all day long, your blood sugar levels won't spike and crash. You know these things, of course, I'm just reminding you. :)
My IP and I are one step away from never speaking to each other again. I swear..I can get on..then I go to post, and suddenly there's no connection! This has happened so much in the last 48 hours..it's got me halfway crazy..I don't think I can afford to be halfway crazy..lol..I sure hope this post goes through.
TINA: Very sweet blog today..or yesterday as it seems to be now. I love that you were able to help and that by doing so you made the day happier for everyone involved. I think this is the kind of service that earned you your Certificate of Excellence Award a couple months ago...yes?
TINKA: Lovely marching! :)
MARY: I'm so glad that the info I sent helped! :)
ITEACH: I hope one of those calls is the one you and your hubby has been waiting..saying extra prayers for you all!
Congrats to Phillip! And now I'm singing the Flintstone's song! :D
DEEDEE: Your avatar is freaking me out.. ;)
Whew! My IP and I live to fight another day.. ;)
I hope everyone has a wonderful morning..and that my internet stays working so I can post a comment on the day OF the blog..and not hours later!
Happy Wednesday All!
125..just cuz I can finally march again..even if it is alone.. ;l
ITEACH: I think I messed that post up.."I hope one of the calls you got yesterday is the one you and your hubby have been waiting for"..that's what I meant to write. Plus the extra prayers..of course.
