I wasn't even aware that the President was going to speak on Tuesday until I read that LynnD was upset last week. Whenever that happens, I look up Yahoo news or CNN to try and figure out what has happened to upset her. I saw that the President was going to give a speech to the nation's children and that some people were upset about it. I just couldn't fathom why. I read that conservatives were concerned that the President was going to force his ideology on impressionable young minds. All I could think of was, "You've got to be kidding me!" He's the President. You listen to him. He will obviously (obvious to me anyway!) have to speak to their level. He's not going to stand there and in one breath tell the kids to stay in school and then turn around and try to explain Health Care Reform to them. That's insane.
I may not have voted for the man, or agree with most anything that he says, but I was brought up to respect my elders (except the really, really old like DeeDee!) and those in authority. This whole mess is just another example of people not respecting others. When I was young, I rarely saw a parent questioning or challenging a teacher or principal. Now it's an every day occurrence. At work, I oftentimes see co-workers going over supervisor's heads to speak to a manager. I realize that sometimes it's warranted, but rarely. Whether you want your children to watch the speech or not, what kind of message are we sending them by making such an issue out of this?
After talking to Dianne on Thursday, I realized that I hadn't asked my husband how he was handling this "issue" at his school. Well I didn't have to. He came home from work on Friday all fired up! His words: "I'm damned if I do, and I'm damned if I don't!" The directive from the Diocese is to show the speech and follow the lesson plan (which I hadn't heard about), but to let those parents who want to, keep their children home if they do not want them to watch. The school isn't equipped to show the speech to each class at the same time. They have decided that since the speech will be online, they will wait and show it and follow the lesson plan. Half the parents have asked him, "You aren't showing that, are you?" while the other half are asking, "You are showing that, aren't you?" One parent has already told him that she is keeping her child at home because she wants him to watch it live!
Kids aren't Democrats or Republicans. THEY ARE KIDS!!!! Listening to the President of the United States encourage them to get a good education is a good thing. Listening to him tell them to stay in school is a good thing. Listening to him tell them to not do drugs is a good thing. Just the fact that he's addressing them IS A GOOD THING. Some are saying that his approval rating is down and he's trying to boost it with this "stunt"! Children have no clue and don't care and parents need to shut the hell up about it around them and have some respect! Happy Labor Day!~

Wait....let me get my hand's up!!!! ;o)
TINA...good blog today. I agree about showing respect. And what do these ignoramuses really think the President is going to say. I'm sorry, but I don't think there is any hidden agenda. Gimme a break.
nighty night, Turtle! xoxo
(I'm the nice one)
Morning Glories!
Congrats on first Tina!
Tina I am so sorry your husband and many teachers, school boards etc.... have to deal with this craziness. I am starting to think crazy is viral and catching.
What makes me so damn mad is that I remember being in school and watching the current President at any given time talking to us about something or other.Hell I think it was President Regan talked to the kids about why he was pushing tax cuts. Like a kid gives a shit.
The reason the whackos have gone crazy I think is two fold. 1. The lesson plan included the question "What can you do to help our President make America better"? Something to that effect. This sent the deranged into over load telling people the President was indoctrinating their chilren for some nefarious plan. Oh the horror!
From what I understand he is going to talk about staying in school, having good attendance, getting good grades, setting education goals and helping in your community. Again oh the horror, there is that commie, pinko, socialist, fascist idea of helping your neighbors. Making America better for all. Oh my Godz.....he is going to make them wear brown shirts and say Hail to America!
2. Pure evil racism! I know I may get jumped for this but I have thought about this and thought about this and my brain has distilled it down to a very simple and old as the centuries fear. A black man will be telling my children what to do. Does not matter if he is the President. Hell many of them don't even recognize him as the President (note the birthers).
My last conclusion is that there are many parents out there who are so insecure in their parenting that they cannot even stop to make this a part of their values and morals and discuss the situation rationally with the kids.
All the children will remember about this is the whipped up frenzy and fear their parents are showing them.
I was not happy with the last 8 years of the last administration. Many times when I voiced that I was not happy about something I was told "He is your President you respect the office if not the man".
You know I agreed with that. These people promoting all of this are dividing our country and pushing winning at all costs. It does not matter if they take the whole country down with them. They, I think would love that, in their minds then they have won.
Have they?
Geez you guys are full of piss and vinegar this morning!
Tina why the hell are you working on Labor Day?
One quick note I want to pay my respects to the Men, Women and Children who gave their lives in this country and fought for labor laws to make all of us safer in our working conditions.
Sometimes I think we forget what Labor Days is all about.
Well Shit now I have chased you all away.
I will sign out. Go back to having fun even if you are at work. Talk to you all later.
And Finally @ 80 comments, Mo has acknowledged the blog.. I love it..

Good Morning DeeDee~
LYNN...it's funny (not really) that the same people that ranted during the last administration to repsesct the office, if not the person are the ones being disrespctul of this president. And spreading tales and lies. Can't win, can we?
TINA is a cheaqter? For shame, for shame!
BIRDEE...congrats on 1st! LOL!! What are you going to do today to celebrate being 1st and the holiday? Did I read you are going fishin?

OMG..I went over to see if my grapes were ready..played a game of Farkle..and look what happened...102 comments! Wow!
TINA: I can remember watching Nixon's speeches when I was in 5th grade. I don't know how much of all that I understood back then..but my parents were actually glad that we were able to get an insight into politics. I think they were just happy to see us learning. You'd think parents today would feel the same way.
LYNND: I can't believe the preacher we have spouting hatred here in AZ..just sickening.
Good Morning to BIRDEE, MO, CAROL, DEEDEE and SHIRLEY! Good night KGRL!
Happy Labor Day Everyone!
Correction 114..sheesh... :)
Ok I checked back one more time. I could not help it I am so co-dependent and need approval. There I said it.
Tina I knew you cheated when I saw you were first on your own blog this morning. Thank you for writing this, as always it helps me get the toxic out of my system.
Mo ummmm somehow don't think the whore remark will garner any respect. LOL I can hear Tina now "I will respect you old bitch"! While waving her fist or a certain finger at you.
I think all of you started the morning drinking today! Lord what a bunch! Love you all!
MO, I wish I could...haven't been since I was a kid....I was just wondering what everyone else is up to today....Actually, my BIL asked dingaling to go saturday and wanted to know if I wanted to join them? ha! I think for my first time trying it again, I should start in a canoe....not a big old boat in deep ass water!!!
Shit...knew I forgot something this morning...drink!
MO!!!~ I'll respect you, ya old bitch!!! Can you see my finger waving?
LynnD~ :)~
DeeDee~ shut up!~ :D
ZONA...good morning!!! How ya feeling today?
DEE DEE...thanks for the warning about TINA spitting.
TINA...it's "old fucking bitch" to you! ijs
DeeDee Tina is fake coughing! Yep I see it the pill is in her hand! Grab her!
Birdee Thank you. Voice of reason might be stretching it just a bit. LOL (((hugs)))
Zona I do have to ask what is in the desert water down there? Anyone praying for someone to get a brain tumor (least of all our President)should never be able to talk to Sunday school let alone be out in public. IMHO. This is what they are teaching in church now?
SHIRLEY...do you celebrate Labor Day in Canada?
Oh Lord I just searched my cupboards and discovered I am out of Mimosa fixings. Need to run to the store already this am. Guess I better get my shower and get dressed before I start drinking.
Will be back later.
The piece is great.......but tina...the gop is responsible for undermining him at every turn....as well as this talk....which has never been done before......which is an exciting and incredible thing for the kids......unless it has been ruined for them by their parents......imagine....this address from the President is especially for you...not the grown ups....for you....because you are the future...........and you are Americans......
The main problem with Obama is that what he wants to do and hopefully will do despite it being an uphill battle against people whose pockets are lined by the things that are wrong with this country....is that he wants to fix the things that are wrong....which have been made that way by corporations and big business that lobby with billions of dollars to make more money from the sweat of American workers.....its greed......its capitalism and I have seen it at its most ugly..........big business couldn't show multi billion dollar quarterly profits without the corruption that they are fighting to keep at the huge cost of slowing down one of the best Presidents this country has ever had........and if he fails it won't be on his watch..like in the case of GWB.....it will be on the watch of corruption and the greedy lust after the almighty dollar........he may even be killed for the dream he has for this country.......money talks and it also fire weapons.
Corporate America and the GOP have whipped people into such a frenzy with their lies that I wouldn't be surprised if someone doesn't get killed.....a man already used his finger for a pointer and drew back a nub....
As far as the black thing goes...A young good looking family looks great on this country!
Since JFK and Jacki look what we have had for first ladies....
Lady Bird....bore a striking resemblance to an ostrich...
Poor Pat Nixon...the thing she was most proud of was her Dick!
Betty Ford...drunk...
Rosalyn Carter...hick
Barbara Bush.....her husbands Mother....
Laura Bush... squint eyed with a seventies haircut...
Nancy Reagan....loved her...but a little long in the tooth....
Hillary...she was ok....but no Michelle Obama!
This time is still reminiscent of the Kennedy era if you just take out the nutz and the squirrels...
Yes Mo we do celebrate Labour Day in Canada. You know we have to do everything you guys do!
Good morning Carol and Lynn D and Zona and DeeDee.
No major plans for the day. Called mum a little while ago to see how she was. She usually stays in bed till noon and that is where she was, Can't go visit her today cause the one taxi in town isn't running. I'll go tomorrow. So I'll just stay home and sell my fish on FB or play Farkle.
Oh DeeDee~ ur make me smile~
Morning All!
Here I thought there was going to be some raging debate about the blog...You all are just waaay toooooo chipper this morning!!!
I didn't even know all this was going on with the parents and kids etc. But what is the big deal? I too remember watching Presidential speeches in grade school (boring). I just think people in general hate anyone that differs from their specific beliefs and I don't get it. Is it because of internet access or are people just meaner than they used to be?
And WTH is Farkle? It sounds like an obcene noise.....
I love being a whore ;O)
Tina, I agree, the kids should def listen to our President..
Mo...
Not much going on 2day, and I am loving it.. just meeting up with my cousins for lunch.. and a stop @ the book store.. hooray for nothing to do..
:O)
HI SCRISHY!!!!!!!
Carol~ shut up whore!!!!!~
SCIRISH...nice to see you. And it does seem people are meaner these days. What's up with that?
CAROL...are you looking for a particular book? I just started reading an older book (1996) called Mona in the Promised Land. It is about a Chinese American girl that decides to convert to Judaism. It is pretty funny so far. I am only 63 pages into it, but so far so good. I have been getting 2 books a week from the library. All are books that would make a great Sandra Bullock / Hugh Grant type of movie!!
JUST LIN...your Alaska pics are spectacular! And you look gorgeous! You have such a beautifu smile!
You made me cry this morning Tina!
You are so right about the whole respect thingy, that is something I have totally learned from the past election year.
Respect is a two way street and it works both ways.
From a teacher's point of view, I need all the help I can get to keep students in school.
Every year the attitude of students is getting worse.
So many just come out and say I hate school. All they talk about is their video games. I could go on and on!
Oh, and another thingy!
The President speaking to the children and me feels like I am getting support instead of more paper work. :)
LYNND: I have no idea what is wrong with that pastor, but he is scary.
MO: Hugh Grant?? Did you say Hugh Grant? :)
HI SCIRISH! HI JENNIFER!
OMG, you guys are cracking me up this morning! And Delores, I just read your description of the first ladies to Jim... they were too funny!
Wow... I came on too late to say anything original about this speech to kids uproar! I agree with Lynn D and Dee Dee, basically.
But the whole speech flap brings up an interesting larger point. I don't have the impression that prior to, oh, maybe the 1980's, whether the President was Democrat or Republican mattered nearly as much to people who were members of the other party. Did Republicans absolutely despise Harry Truman or Jack Kennedy? Did Democrats vilify Gerry Ford or Dwight Eisenhower?
But, starting in the 80's, it seems to me that the country has become far more polarized. Republicans just despised the Clintons. We dyed-in-the-wool Democrats couldn't stand even the sight of George W Bush. And now, dyed-in-the wool Republicans are going after Obama with all the vitriol they can muster.
What's happened here? Have ideological differences between left-wingers and right-wingers grown over time, to the point where all the common ground has eroded away?
Happy Labor Day (or Labour Day for our neighbors to the north) Owls. (BTW firefox is telling me I spelled that wrong).
Wow, 140 comments and so early in the day. And the first 80 or so aren't even about the blog! Amazing!
Tina, you are so right about this topic. What is wrong with anyone, no matter who it is, telling our youth to stay in school, etc? Would those parents be in such a frenzy if it was say, the Jonas Brothers giving the same speech? I think NOT! I just don't get it!
Lynn and Dee, I echo your comments as well.
The BIG news here all weekend has been about the Bay Bridge. It has been closed all weekend for repairs and was to open Tuesday @ 5am. They found a crack that wasn't on the original repair list and now the bridge may take longer to repair. I swear, they have talked about this every half hour all weekend. I already get white knuckle nervous crossing bridges and have been known to go miles out of my way to avoid it. I don't need to hear about this CRACK every half hour. sheesh!!!!!!!!
Geez, it's like Whores on Parade this morning.
Tina What corner are you working? And you've only had 1 customer? Maybe a little more makeup would help....ijs.
DeeDee LMAO @ Pat Nixon!
SacBarb And I see you brought crack!
Okay, now to be serious.....
I am so ashamed of how so many of my fellow Americans are behaving and I have to believe that at the bottom of it is racism, pure and simple. They would deny that of course, but they act like President Obama is not the "true" president, but some imposter who accidentally assumed the office. His skin is not the right color so of course he can't be worthy of the office. I am ashamed and appalled at these people and the message they are giving the children.
And have you noticed that some really evil people have infiltrated the churches? I am not a church goer but I am reading up on Christianity and these assholes are so far from being righteous, I'm surprised we can't see their horns and tails.
MO Thank you! I have lots more pics but I tried not to be too overwhelming so I just post a sample of this and that. LOL
Did I shut down the blog? Gee, a girl could get a complex....
J/LIN: I'm here...the Secret Service has contacted the pastor of the church in Tempe that LYNND and I mentioned..finally..before it escalates even more.
Now I'm going to go check out your pics!! :)
Tina, good blog today. Quite frankly I am surprised about all the hostility... on both sides. President wants to talk to children, some like it some don't. I know this is simplifying it, but blowing it out of proportion is getting us nowhere. Let him speak. I am sure the world will not come to an end. Deep breaths everyone and show the kids that we have choices in this country. That is a good thing. It all reminds me of an article I saw in the paper yesterday. I don't remember it exactly but it went something like this...Parents at a soccer match were being unruly in spite of warnings from the officials. The players tired of it faced their parents and told them to behave or they would have to leave.
Have a great day all!
btw, I wasn't refering to anyone here to leave lol! I reread my post and it sounded like that sorry :-(
Mary Gee, look what you did now! Everybody left! j/k LOL
150
Unreal! Hubby is on a rampage!!!! omg!!!!
DeeDee loved the first lady descriptions!
Mary scared the hell out of me. I kept waiting to hear everyone get along or I will bang your heads together. You go Mary!
Iteach I don't know how you do it day in and day out. I loved what you said about getting some support. That made me teary eyed.
Whabby It seems that the very extreme have taken over and no one in authority is speaking out. This is more than political dirty tricks, but a more evil influence well I guess evil dirty tricks if you will. I think there are still many of us who are sane and see through some of it but sadly there are some that just love to hate and fight.
Just/Lin us no holds barred gals seem to clear a room! LOL
Sacbarb Crap you are scaring me with the bridge thing! We have a few of those here in WA too! You will still be picking me up at the airport won't you??? Do yo have to cross the bridge? I could maybe find a horse and carriage or something to carry me just in case. I don't want us both to have nervous breakdowns next weekend.
Hi Zony!
Scrishy I loved that you posted today was thinking about you this morning!
Has anyone heard from Tinka?? Is she Ok?
I need to go work on the rest of the paper work. I am in the home stretch!
I came home early from work to find that hubby had to spend half his DAY OFF drafting a letter to the parents of the school explaining why he can't show the President's speech LIVE tomorrow. He is away at a Principal's meeting tomorrow and will review the speech (actually already has) and show it to the appropriate age groups (not Pre-K). The reason he had to write the letter is because he received 8 emails from parents. Not from those who don't want it shown, but from those who are pissed that it won't be shown live. One even said to him, "I’m concerned that those in administration are giving in to a very vocal minority." WTF!!!! You have no idea how pissed I am! They don't have the equipment to show it live to all the children. It will still be shown, but to a couple of classes at a time. OMG!!! What a bunch of assholes! I bet if GWB was giving the speech, these same parents would be after him to let their kids out of listening to it. My hubby has the utmost respect for the office of the President. Quite frankly....we both just discussed it....if it were Clinton during his second term giving the speech, we wouldn't allow our kids to watch it. We wouldn't want our kids listening to him tell them one thing while he was busy abusing the office of the President (literally!)!! I feel like LynnD right now! I am so fucking pissed!!!!
Tina sadly the idiots are running loose everywhere. Face being stupid is not limited to just one party and both sides have crazy fanatics.
First half of Presidents speech to the children of America. It is posted on Huffington post.
Hello everyone - how's everybody doing today? I'm here with students at Wakefield High School in Arlington, Virginia. And we've got students tuning in from all across America, kindergarten through twelfth grade. I'm glad you all could join us today.
I know that for many of you, today is the first day of school. And for those of you in kindergarten, or starting middle or high school, it's your first day in a new school, so it's understandable if you're a little nervous. I imagine there are some seniors out there who are feeling pretty good right now, with just one more year to go. And no matter what grade you're in, some of you are probably wishing it were still summer, and you could've stayed in bed just a little longer this morning.
I know that feeling. When I was young, my family lived in Indonesia for a few years, and my mother didn't have the money to send me where all the American kids went to school. So she decided to teach me extra lessons herself, Monday through Friday - at 4:30 in the morning.
Now I wasn't too happy about getting up that early. A lot of times, I'd fall asleep right there at the kitchen table. But whenever I'd complain, my mother would just give me one of those looks and say, "This is no picnic for me either, buster."
So I know some of you are still adjusting to being back at school. But I'm here today because I have something important to discuss with you. I'm here because I want to talk with you about your education and what's expected of all of you in this new school year.
Now I've given a lot of speeches about education. And I've talked a lot about responsibility.
I've talked about your teachers' responsibility for inspiring you, and pushing you to learn.
I've talked about your parents' responsibility for making sure you stay on track, and get your homework done, and don't spend every waking hour in front of the TV or with that Xbox.
I've talked a lot about your government's responsibility for setting high standards, supporting teachers and principals, and turning around schools that aren't working where students aren't getting the opportunities they deserve.
But at the end of the day, we can have the most dedicated teachers, the most supportive parents, and the best schools in the world - and none of it will matter unless all of you fulfill your responsibilities. Unless you show up to those schools; pay attention to those teachers; listen to your parents, grandparents and other adults; and put in the hard work it takes to succeed.
And that's what I want to focus on today: the responsibility each of you has for your education. I want to start with the responsibility you have to yourself.
Every single one of you has something you're good at. Every single one of you has something to offer. And you have a responsibility to yourself to discover what that is. That's the opportunity an education can provide.
Maybe you could be a good writer - maybe even good enough to write a book or articles in a newspaper - but you might not know it until you write a paper for your English class. Maybe you could be an innovator or an inventor - maybe even good enough to come up with the next iPhone or a new medicine or vaccine - but you might not know it until you do a project for your science class. Maybe you could be a mayor or a Senator or a Supreme Court Justice, but you might not know that until you join student government or the debate team.
Part 2
And no matter what you want to do with your life - I guarantee that you'll need an education to do it. You want to be a doctor, or a teacher, or a police officer? You want to be a nurse or an architect, a lawyer or a member of our military? You're going to need a good education for every single one of those careers. You can't drop out of school and just drop into a good job. You've got to work for it and train for it and learn for it.
And this isn't just important for your own life and your own future. What you make of your education will decide nothing less than the future of this country. What you're learning in school today will determine whether we as a nation can meet our greatest challenges in the future.
You'll need the knowledge and problem-solving skills you learn in science and math to cure diseases like cancer and AIDS, and to develop new energy technologies and protect our environment. You'll need the insights and critical thinking skills you gain in history and social studies to fight poverty and homelessness, crime and discrimination, and make our nation more fair and more free. You'll need the creativity and ingenuity you develop in all your classes to build new companies that will create new jobs and boost our economy.
We need every single one of you to develop your talents, skills and intellect so you can help solve our most difficult problems. If you don't do that - if you quit on school - you're not just quitting on yourself, you're quitting on your country.
Now I know it's not always easy to do well in school. I know a lot of you have challenges in your lives right now that can make it hard to focus on your schoolwork.
I get it. I know what that's like. My father left my family when I was two years old, and I was raised by a single mother who struggled at times to pay the bills and wasn't always able to give us things the other kids had. There were times when I missed having a father in my life. There were times when I was lonely and felt like I didn't fit in.
So I wasn't always as focused as I should have been. I did some things I'm not proud of, and got in more trouble than I should have. And my life could have easily taken a turn for the worse.
But I was fortunate. I got a lot of second chances and had the opportunity to go to college, and law school, and follow my dreams. My wife, our First Lady Michelle Obama, has a similar story. Neither of her parents had gone to college, and they didn't have much. But they worked hard, and she worked hard, so that she could go to the best schools in this country.
Some of you might not have those advantages. Maybe you don't have adults in your life who give you the support that you need. Maybe someone in your family has lost their job, and there's not enough money to go around. Maybe you live in a neighborhood where you don't feel safe, or have friends who are pressuring you to do things you know aren't right.
Part 3
But at the end of the day, the circumstances of your life - what you look like, where you come from, how much money you have, what you've got going on at home - that's no excuse for neglecting your homework or having a bad attitude. That's no excuse for talking back to your teacher, or cutting class, or dropping out of school. That's no excuse for not trying.
Where you are right now doesn't have to determine where you'll end up. No one's written your destiny for you. Here in America, you write your own destiny. You make your own future.
That's what young people like you are doing every day, all across America.
Young people like Jazmin Perez, from Roma, Texas. Jazmin didn't speak English when she first started school. Hardly anyone in her hometown went to college, and neither of her parents had gone either. But she worked hard, earned good grades, got a scholarship to Brown University, and is now in graduate school, studying public health, on her way to being Dr. Jazmin Perez.
I'm thinking about Andoni Schultz, from Los Altos, California, who's fought brain cancer since he was three. He's endured all sorts of treatments and surgeries, one of which affected his memory, so it took him much longer - hundreds of extra hours - to do his schoolwork. But he never fell behind, and he's headed to college this fall.
And then there's Shantell Steve, from my hometown of Chicago, Illinois. Even when bouncing from foster home to foster home in the toughest neighborhoods, she managed to get a job at a local health center; start a program to keep young people out of gangs; and she's on track to graduate high school with honors and go on to college.
Jazmin, Andoni and Shantell aren't any different from any of you. They faced challenges in their lives just like you do. But they refused to give up. They chose to take responsibility for their education and set goals for themselves. And I expect all of you to do the same.
Part 4
That's why today, I'm calling on each of you to set your own goals for your education - and to do everything you can to meet them. Your goal can be something as simple as doing all your homework, paying attention in class, or spending time each day reading a book. Maybe you'll decide to get involved in an extracurricular activity, or volunteer in your community. Maybe you'll decide to stand up for kids who are being teased or bullied because of who they are or how they look, because you believe, like I do, that all kids deserve a safe environment to study and learn. Maybe you'll decide to take better care of yourself so you can be more ready to learn. And along those lines, I hope you'll all wash your hands a lot, and stay home from school when you don't feel well, so we can keep people from getting the flu this fall and winter.
Whatever you resolve to do, I want you to commit to it. I want you to really work at it.
I know that sometimes, you get the sense from TV that you can be rich and successful without any hard work -- that your ticket to success is through rapping or basketball or being a reality TV star, when chances are, you're not going to be any of those things.
But the truth is, being successful is hard. You won't love every subject you study. You won't click with every teacher. Not every homework assignment will seem completely relevant to your life right this minute. And you won't necessarily succeed at everything the first time you try.
That's OK. Some of the most successful people in the world are the ones who've had the most failures. JK Rowling's first Harry Potter book was rejected twelve times before it was finally published. Michael Jordan was cut from his high school basketball team, and he lost hundreds of games and missed thousands of shots during his career. But he once said, "I have failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed."
These people succeeded because they understand that you can't let your failures define you - you have to let them teach you. You have to let them show you what to do differently next time. If you get in trouble, that doesn't mean you're a troublemaker, it means you need to try harder to behave. If you get a bad grade, that doesn't mean you're stupid, it just means you need to spend more time studying.
No one's born being good at things, you become good at things through hard work. You're not a varsity athlete the first time you play a new sport. You don't hit every note the first time you sing a song. You've got to practice. It's the same with your schoolwork. You might have to do a math problem a few times before you get it right, or read something a few times before you understand it, or do a few drafts of a paper before it's good enough to hand in.
Don't be afraid to ask questions. Don't be afraid to ask for help when you need it. I do that every day. Asking for help isn't a sign of weakness, it's a sign of strength. It shows you have the courage to admit when you don't know something, and to learn something new. So find an adult you trust - a parent, grandparent or teacher; a coach or counselor - and ask them to help you stay on track to meet your goals.
And even when you're struggling, even when you're discouraged, and you feel like other people have given up on you - don't ever give up on yourself. Because when you give up on yourself, you give up on your country.
Part 5
The story of America isn't about people who quit when things got tough. It's about people who kept going, who tried harder, who loved their country too much to do anything less than their best.
It's the story of students who sat where you sit 250 years ago, and went on to wage a revolution and found this nation. Students who sat where you sit 75 years ago who overcame a Depression and won a world war; who fought for civil rights and put a man on the moon. Students who sat where you sit 20 years ago who founded Google, Twitter and Facebook and changed the way we communicate with each other.
So today, I want to ask you, what's your contribution going to be? What problems are you going to solve? What discoveries will you make? What will a president who comes here in twenty or fifty or one hundred years say about what all of you did for this country?
Your families, your teachers, and I are doing everything we can to make sure you have the education you need to answer these questions. I'm working hard to fix up your classrooms and get you the books, equipment and computers you need to learn. But you've got to do your part too. So I expect you to get serious this year. I expect you to put your best effort into everything you do. I expect great things from each of you. So don't let us down - don't let your family or your country or yourself down. Make us all proud. I know you can do it.
Thank you, God bless you, and God bless America.
The end.
Pretty radical he loves the children of America.
Thanks for posting that Lynn D. Now can you explain to me what all the fuss is about? That speech seems pretty harmless to me, encouraging kids to stay in school and try their best. Geez people chill out! Next someone will say if you play the message backward there will be another crypted message saying take drugs and drop out of school!
Dammit Shirley don't give the crazies anymore ideas!
Sssshhhh but if you take the first letter in every third sentence I think it might spell..........
See how hot under the collar this topic can make you on one level or the other.
Chill...thats what the enemy wants.......
Even you Tina...you have just contradicted your own blog....
See....this thing doesn't have to affect you in the obvious way...on the surface.....but on any level...and whatever frustration or anger you experience personally...will eventually filter down to "OBAMA DID IT"....
Your perspective warps a little when you are angry......sensible people have got to keep a level head......otherwise you will eventually be biting fingers off as well.....
Don't let the evil that is out there working on people suck you into becoming part of the problem......people on the side of fairness and sensibility must remain and become more a part of the solution....
I am sorry to say....I am afraid this is going to get worse....and to the point that we may just have to hang Rush and Glenn and Ann up by their feet and have a public caning....or possibly some tongue augmentation....or both!
Set some examples you know....
lmao at Shirley and Lynn D......
"don't give the crazies anymore ideas!!"
'but if you take the first letter of every third......."
My goal it is a simple goal, in honor of DeeDee. I will not bite off any finger wagging in my face no matter the provacation or political leanings of said finger.
oops need my dictionary that would be provocation! LMAO See how excited these damn people make me.
Ok I am going to go watch some mind numbing and escapism TV.
lol LynnD~ I read the speech.....every one of the parents sent the link to the hubby...as if he wouldn't read it....and I have to say, Middle School and higher....I don't see the younger ones listening that long or even getting it. The teacher will have to explain it in a nutshell~ We asked our Senior if he was going to watch it in class and he said they weren't...that they could watch it for extra credit....and knowing him....it won't be watched~
DeeDee~ I wish the crazies would stop talking like they are the only ones that are right~ They are so not open to any other opinion than their own~
169~ hi mary~
170 Tina ;-)
LYNN...I read the speech and I cried. I truly believe in my heart that he means every word. That he truly does care about our youth. That he is indeed our President, but he is a father first. What made me cry the most was the bullshit bruhaha that is being made about this. If I were a parent, I would want my child to see this.
I have to share some stories about a suburban school here. It is an upper middle class district that I have 2 cousins attending. They are special ed, as they have some learning disabilities (I think the biggest disability is thier mom, but that is a different blog!). When they were in 4th grade, they had reading problems. Instead of teaching the kids to read better, they played with easy-bake ovens...the level of reading was the directions to make cakes in the easy bake. That is a damn useful thing! As the kids progressed to the next grades, instead of being taught to read better, they were placed in classrooms where the teachers read them the tests, because they were not capable of understanding what they read. WTF?? TEACH THEM THE SKILLS.
In this same school, their 5th grade teacher told the students that "while Hitler was a bad man, he was a good leader" HUH????
How are these teachers supposed to be inspiring the students?
JENNIFER...I wish everyone had you as a teacher
Tina..I knowwwwwwwww.....but I must say I am surprised to hear you say it.....crazies be damned! U R finally seeing the light!!
Praise XENU!!
Interesting blog today, TINA> I personally think that the kids should hear the speech. My parents made us listen to many president speeches on TV and i did he same to my kids and I don't ever remember hearing if he was a Democrat or Republican. We just knew he was our President. I also did not vote for Obama but have thrown my full respect behind him as our nation's leader. My grandchildren will be listening to him tomorrow. I don't know how much they will understand but they will come home and talk to their parents about it. MrD and I have very different opions so I think I am really glad we didn't raise kids together.
I enjoyed reading all the banter this morning before I got out of bed. You are all so funny. BIRDIE: THERE is no doubt in my mind the TINA was able to get herself on as first by cheqting.
The mom, kids and I went to see All About Steve. We thought it was cute. It was just silly but I loved the people in it and it made you laugh.
Ok....let's get serious about the traveling necklace. It has to be somewhere as I doubt that Jennifer's daughter kept it (right Jennifer)? Someone is sand bagging on it and doing their picture and mailing it on....WHO IS THE CULPRIT? COME FORWARD, PLEASE!!
Tina I think it is a little long for the grade schoolers too. I think 5th grade and up would get it. The little ones will lose interest after 5 min.
I also see nothing wrong with making it optional or extra credit. Especially the schools who have limited TV's and resources. Which I believe are most schools.
Mo I am hearing the Hitler crap everywhere he was a bad man but a great leader. This is being taught in many fundamentalist churches. I am reading about the C street house and The Family and this is part of the garbage they teach along with every other dictator and crazy.
Dianne Hope you are feeling better! Who does have the necklace. Sandie do you have it back if you are reading?
GOLDIE...HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
MAY YOUR DAY BE FILLED WITH SUNSHINE, LAUGHTER AND TONS OF LOVE!
