This Night Owl Blog has given so much! It is a fun place, we don't bash and we have fun being "tedious"! We offer advice, give love, lots of free food and an open forum which can be about anything that is important, thought provoking or just plain silly. And sometimes we just March (some to different drummers, but all together). :) It is not about a single person, it is about all the people on any given day blended together.....Goldie!

Life Lessons Learned
Dedicated to our own Iteach, Jennifer, VIG and Tink ~~~
by bon'oregon
Recently I read the inspiring best-seller The LAST LECTURE by Randy Pausch, the 47-year old father of three very young children and Carnegie Mellon Professor of Computer Science, Human-Computer Interaction, Design and Time Management. In September 2006, Pausch was diagnosed with metastatic pancreatic cancer and, in August 2007, he was given the prognosis of 3 to 6 months of relatively good health. Much of the next few months were spent capturing in a 'last lecture' his philosophy of life and lessons he wanted to leave with former students and-~~more importantly~~-his own children and wife. What a wonderful gift he left for all of us educators, parents, HUMANS.
I'm so tempted to leave a dozen or so quotes from the book here, but I'll resist. Here are just a few.....
*"In the end, educators best serve students by helping them be more self-reflective. The only way any of us can improve...is if we develop a real ability to assess ourselves."
*"I've always believed that if you took one-tenth the energy you put into complaining and applied it to solving the problem, you'd be surprised by how well things can work out."
*"Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted...failure is not just acceptable, it's often essential."
*"Whether you think you can or can't, you're right."
*"Showing gratitude is one of the simplest yet most powerful things humans can do for each other."
*"If I could only give three words of advice, they would be 'tell the truth'. If I got three more words, I'd add: 'all the time."
Today is National Teacher Day. This week is National Teacher Appreciation Week. I thought it might be fun, on this day, for each of us to look back and remember the ONE teacher who stands out in our memories for something they said or did which impacted us and our life choices.
Was he/she a Post-Graduate Professor or gifted Kindergarten Teacher? Did we recognize that influence at the time? Or are we just beginning to realize how much of who we are we owe to them? I've had one or two such teachers, but I'd rather hear from YOU about yours!

1 – 200 of 473 Newer› Newest»thanks for the blog today bon'o. and i agree with you in thanking our wonderful owls who teach. most of the time it can be a thankless job. i do think though that people who teach do so out of love because they sure as hell don't do it for the money. i will have to think later on who was my most influential teacher. i will be back later!
Good morning Barb! congrats on 1st.
Will be back in a bit to comment on the blog. I had a fav. teacher.
I give more kudos to teachers then just about any profession.
Have to change my avatar too. Mr. Goldie asked me if it was still his butt and he laughed and said "I feel so cheap".
Good morning everyone!
Barbara in wa congrats on 1st!
Bon'o what a great blog! I certainly have to applaud anyone who wants or is a teacher. What a rewarding job it must be when you see a childs eyes light up because they know the answer, or a parent who says "thank you" or you recieve that 100th cup with "Best Teacher Ever" on it.
I always believed one skill a teacher needed was to be able to listen. I had a teacher, Miss Lynn, who was there to listen to me. Miss Lynn was my grade 7 math teacher. I had a problem with negative numbers. I just couldn't get it and I got so frustrated. She came in early in the mornings to help me. She didn't have to but she did. I thought that was real nice of her.
So many teachers go above and beyond their duties and never even get a thank you for it. I want to say "Thank you!".
Good morning Goldie!

I forgot to thank you for teh wonderful meal yesterday.. and here you have another beautiful spread... You must stay up all night preparing!!!
Thanks!!!
Off to read the blog and getready for work!!!
See ya around the nest!!!
Good Morning Barbara, Shirley, Ibebold and Goldie. How are you all doing today?
Hi Shirley, and IBB!
Mr. Beinama, my 10th grade biology teacher. I loved him so then, and I do now. He was what every teacher should be. He taught me about my abilities to learn ad self-teach.
A heartfelt thanks to all the teachers who have touched my life or my childrens.
Great breakfast Shirley!
Hi Tink!
I am in office about to lose my sanity. Remember when we were robbed? They damaged the doors and frames at the time (to all the inside suites) so we had temp metal plate where the locks were refitted.
I arrived this morning to the workman replacing the door and the frame. The sawing and the noise level in my office is deafening!! I can't use the phone and I swear the nice man doing this moves as slow as molasses in January.
Remember the blog the other day with our least favorite sound? Screw the ice chewing- it is sawsall drill!!
Good morning hooters!
Great blog Bono. I have so much respect for anyone who is a teacher, you know they don't (and can't) do it for the money.
Happy Teachers Day!
Congrats Barb on being first today!
Shirley, thanx again for the good food.
Have a great day today!
Good Morning East Bay J and Goldie.
Happy Birthday Just Lin - Have a good one.
Shirley - Another beautiful breakfast and you even brought whipping cream for my blueberry pancakes. How sweet is that?
Tina - I hope you are well enough today to celebrate George Clooney's birthday.
BonO - Thanks for the shout out this morning. My thoughts go out to VIG, Iteach, and Jennifer every morning as I think about them leaving for school. A part of me wishes I were going with them. They were such happy years. My biggest thrill is to meet a grown woman or man who tells me I was her/his favourite teacher and actually remembers the fun things we did. That's what made it a great life. It was more of a 'life' than a job. I remember the day in the staff room when we discussed the question of what we would do if we won the million dollar lottery. A lot of us were sure we would continue teaching anyway.
I am off to answer a few messages. I will be back to talk about my favourite teacher.
***HAPPY BIRTHDAY JUST LIN******
Happy day to you dear friend.
congrats on 10 MEK!
I just sent that poor workman a look that caused him to actually back up. HELLO- when the phone rings and you see me answer, don't start the frigging saw up!!
How is the mouth today lynn?
How is everyone feeling today? I don't want the details if you ate too much mexican food yesterday though...
Morning Glories!
Barb in Wa got first!!!
Bono: What a wonderful blog. I will have to get that book. I missed the TV program about that wonderful man.
Tink, Vig, Iteach and Jennifer I always have great respect for teachers. I know I could never do your job. Happy Teachers Day!
I had two teachers who come to mind.
One was Mrs. Edlund in the 4th grade. She was not nice to me. Would point out to everyone in class when my hair was not combed or my clothes were messy. My grades dropped dramatically in her class. I never said anything to my Dad about her. One day she called him in for a conference because I was failing math.
I don't know what my Dad said to her. More than likely that my Mom had passed away and I was struggling. My hair was messy and clothes wrinkled because I was doing it by myself. Well she did a 180 and started to be very nice and tried to help me.
I have to say as a kid I really still did not care for her. But she taught me not to judge people by appearances! It was an important lesson even at a young age be compassionate because you never know what is going on in someones life.
The second teacher was my 5th grade teacher Mr. Bezzo. This man was wonderful. He was patient with all of us and really taught me how to enjoy learning. I can remember sitting on the playground kind of droopy and he walked over held out his arm and said come on you are going to be my playground helper today.
He did not just do this for me but for all of the kids. I can see him with his gray hair and tall stature walking with all the kids following him and hanging off of him!
He was a great teacher and a compassionate man!
Goldie: Mouth is a mess today! Calling the dentist in a bit to see if I need to go back in and have it looked at. Good thing I am not at work with you right now. I hurt like hell and I would probably put that sawsall where the sun don't shine! LOL
Oh and goldie tell Mr. Goldie we don't think he is cheap, but we want to know is he easy? ROFLMAO
Ok another long post by me! Sorry gang I am rambling but it is taking my mind off the pain!
Oh and Joey Have fun in New York! that is fantastic.
Craaaap!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY JUST LIN!!!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, LINDA !!!
and, Good Tuesday Morning BarbWa, Goldie, Shirley, IBB, Tinka, EBJ, MEK and LynnD!
For today, my avatar is in honor of Randy Pausch and teachers everywhere. Thanks to those of you who have or later will share with us memories of YOUR favorite teachers and their impact on your lives.
bbl, and hope all have a great day!
Back again. I love reading my mail in the morning.
I was taught by nuns at a Catholic Academy. They were wonderful years. I think each one had an effect on me. That was their life and we knew it. I started school younger than most and I was a very nervous child. For the most part the nuns were so kind and nurturing to the little ones. They could also be very strict and demanding with the older students but that didn't hurt us either.
I think my favourite nun was Sister Mary Eileen who I had the first year I went to St. Ann's. I remember she taught me never to tell lies. As I said I was a nervous child, too nervous to eat breakfast before I left for school. The thought of food made me nauseous. I was then starving way before recess. I would sneak food out of my lunch kit (that was stored in my desk) a little at a time. One day Sister took me out to the hall and asked me if I had been eating a chocolate bar. I looked her in the eye and said "No Sister". She asked me two more times. Each time I lied and said "No Sister". Finally she said "That's fine my Dear, now please go and wash the chocolate off your face". No scolding, no mentioning it again. I was so humiliated I swore I would never lie again and I think I pretty much stuck to that premise all my life. I will always be grateful to her for how she handled the situation. I think I received the gift of empathy from her.
I have another memory from that same year. At Christmas time we chose names from a hat to exchange presents. Each student would get one present. I was so excited. When all the gifts were given out I was the only one who didn't have one. The child who should have brought me a present was sick that day. Sister noticed how disappointed I was and called me up to her desk. She said
"I have a special gift for you". She handed me the most beautiful sterling silver rosary. I was so happy I cried. I still have that rosary on my bedside today. Oh how I love that nun.
Hi EBJ- sorry I missed you earlier- and hi to bon bon too!
I have taken it under advisement lynn, and I am officially going to shove the saw and drill up this guys ass....
LOL..

HAPPY BIRTHDAY JUST_LIN!!!
Well a little break at work...
it is a beautiful spring day in the valley...
My favorite teachers have to be my more rescent
ones in college.. like 3 years ago.. Mrs. Stuart.. my photograhpy teacher... she still tells me i am one of her best students..(most gifted) in photogrphy..(you wouldn't know it from the pictures i got saturday night..)
I hated school...in jr and high school...
Sorry.. now I know how bad that hurt me in life...
oh well At least I learned something from it..!!!
I will break this in 2 posts...
Teachers in MY life:
Good Teacher - Mr. Snyder - Business Teacher in High School - I took EVERY class this guy taught - he was SO good looking - but that aside - he is the reason I got my accounting degree!!
Bad Teacher - Mrs. Sutton - 4th grade - she was the teacher NOBODY wanted to get - and imagine my disappointment when the class lists went up in the windows and MY name was in HER class -
Resource Center Helper - Mrs. Crandell, Jr. High - I still keep in contact with her - she is an amazing woman - She sat at the desk in the Math Resource Center and helped with problems, etc. I ended up volunteering to help during my open period - she made math fun!!
and - My dad - I will never forget "MacBeth" - he sat me down at the kitchen table and read that with me over and over again until I understood EVERY aspect of it..
29
THIRTY
seems the FOAD dude has released me!!
:-)
Termite inspection guy came - NONE.
BUT, as the garage door was opening - I noticed this big, ass spider - BLACK WIDOW - YIKES - he killed it - but that won't take care of the problem... so, I'll have to look "better" - to make sure there aren't anymore!!
Okay - I'm waiting for my mom - we're going on a little shopping trip and lunch!!
Goldie - I can relate to your "pain" today - the neighbors are getting their carpet cleaned and the hose noise is UNREAL!!!
Hugs to all!!!!!!
OH - and I can't forget!!
Tonight is Idol..
PLEASE - everyone in your time zone -
WE MUST vote for David Cook - we need to off set the teenyagers voting for the little david!!
SO - let's do our best!!!
:-)
MEK--You must have sent the FOAD monster to me... i just wrote a long... post about the race and got FOADED... iam not happy...
race went well... posted pictures...
IBB - sorry - doesn't that just SUCK....... that happened to me THREE times Friday night when I tried to tell everyone about the concert -- think I'll write the blog thing on myspace!!!
FRUSTRATING!!!!!!!!!!!
don't worry MEK- I will vote! I love David Cook. Glad no termites, but ick to the spider.
Sorry you got foad IBB- that is so frustrating.
I am sitting here until my workmen get done with lunch. When they finish their's THEN I am taking mine. I figure the longer away from the noise the better. Also found out they will not be done with eveyones stuff today- they need a whole day more! SHOOT me now! At least when they finish my door and put the glass back in it should muffle the noise.
I saw the lecture and purchased the book. Randy Pausch has helped me in so many ways.
The book I'm reading now is Eckhart Tolle's "A New Earth" which is helping me to let go of old conditioning that causes me to react to things in ways I'm not proud of. I'm also following the webcast archives at oprah.com
I can't think of any one teacher who had a dramatic effect on me but I'll never forget my younger son's 1st grade teacher. Andy was very impatient to learn to read because he wanted to be like his mom and big brother. Whenever we went somewhere in the car, he asked me to tell him with road signs and billboards said. By the time he was 3, he wanted me to converse with him by spelling to him. So by the time he was in 1st grade, he was far more advanced than many of the kids in his class.
This wonderful woman, Ms. Delong, recognized Andy's insatiable appetite for books so she would take him to the library and let him check out any book he wished. From those books, she created a special spelling list just for him. Today my son has an incredible gift for writing and I'm sure Ms. Delong had a lot to do with that. I'm so thankful for teachers who recognize they really are an extension of family for our kids. My son was extremely lucky to have Ms. Delong in his life!
And a bright cheery hello to everyone! This owl has been very busy scrapbooking and preparing her house for visitors. Yummy hubby and I are going on a 2-week road trip to Oklahoma and our daugther and grandson will be following us back in her car. She's bringing a friend along to help her drive and I'm happy about that because it's a loooong way from San Francisco to Oklahoma City! We plan to make the return trip with short driving days and lot of interesting stops along the way for our 5yo grandson. They will be staying with us for about a month so we are preparing the guest room for them.
My foster dog is slowly coming out of his shell. Yesterday was the first time I allowed him play time in the back yard (outside of his dog run) and he had a great time! He ran in and out of the house with the little dogs as if he'd been doing it forever! I will post some pictures in myspace in the next couple of days.
I've been reading and keeping up with you guys every couple of days but am so busy with work, the foster dog, etc., just haven't had tons of time for posting. But I want each of you to know I think about you daily and hope life is treating you well.
One more thing ... I'm changing my hairstyle from medium layers to something short and sassy but haven't quite figured out the direction I want to go in. Was thinking of something like Sharon Stone's messy short look but not sure. I don't like my hair to look too "fixed", if that makes any sense. Anyways, if anyone has any ideas or photos, feel free to drop me a line over at myspace (outatuune). My appointment is a week from today.....

You guys have all disappeared from my friends list. When I try to request you as a friend it says I already am. Your old comments are all still there. Anyone have any ideas as to what I can do to restore my friends list? Thanks. I'll check back later.
Good Morning Owls!
Mr. Uhe was my favorite teacher. He was my teacher in 10th grade for Chem I, 11th grade for Physics, and 12th grade for Chem II. He made those classes fun and interesting, and he cared about what was going on in our lives. My photo albums from my Junior and Senior proms include photos of him with a group of us students who adored him.
His former students would often stop by our classroom to see him when they were home visiting from college. After I graduated from high school, I became one of those students who would pop in for a quick hello or for help with my college homework.
He was so proud of his students, and he believed in us, and by doing so, he helped us believe in ourselves.
BonO: Great blog! I love the quotes!
Just Lin: Happy Birthday!!!
MEK: My cordless phones are charged and ready for tonight. :)
Waving HI to everyone!
Happy American Idol Tuesday! :)
ROFLMAO@Glynis!!!
Hey Owlettes..I hope your Tuesday is going well..OMG it's Idol night! WOOHOO!
Excuse my embarrassing posts over in area 51 please;)hehe
Congrats on first Barbara!
Most people must be busy today, as I see there aren't a lot of comments!
I used to think I wanted to teach. I went to college and my major was elementary education. There is a demand for male elementary teachers. After raising my brothers and getting older, I feel I have no patience for kids in the classroom. I don't mean to sound mean, I just don't think it's my calling as I once did. I used to beg my brothers to "play school" in the summer with me as the teacher! LMAO
Carol-You have an important email at your regular addy;)Thanks!
See y'all tonight on myspace for spoilers!!
Shirley,
It's a MySpace glitch. Here's the message they posted on their help page.

Friend lists
Some of you may be having issues with your friend lists. The count may be off, your new friends may not be appearing, and deleted friends may reappear. We are aware of the problem and are working on it. Please wait it out while we find a fix.
I forgot to tell my favorite teacher story.
Her name was Miss Mixon! She was my kindergarten teacher. I LOVED this woman. I became so attached to her, that every holiday my Mother would buy gifts for me to give to her. I even stayed in touch with her via snail mail as I got older. I found out she went on to get married, and we lost touch. I'd love to know where she is today!
I must've really "liked women" at the age of 5, because I not only had a crush on Miss Mixon, but I wanted to marry Maria_________(last name left out to protect her identity! ROFLMAO)
I also played with barbie's that year, so go figure! HAHA
OHHH y'all know too much about me;)

Hi owls!
Happy Birthday, justlin!!
barb in wa, congrats on first!!
LynnD, I am sorry you are still in so much pain. I am glad you're calling the dentist. I hope you feel better soon.
Bon'o, thank you for this wonderful post! It is so sad that Randy Pausch died so young. He left his children a great legacy. Thank you to all who wrote about their teachers!
CA Residents
I've never been to California so I'm needing some help. Is anyone familiar with the hotels close to the Hollywood Bowl? Is it a safe neighborhood? I'm trying to find a reasonably priced hotel that's clean and safe. If anyone has some recommendations, I would greatly appreciate the help!
Thanks!
HIdee Owls,
Just checking in. Called the damn dentist and can't get in until tomorrow morning.
So I cut all the percosett, percocett (however the hell it is spelled) and I am now drugged comfortably. Well until it wears off.
It really is amazing how teachers touch our lives and shape how we have grown to adults.
I thought of another. Mr. Vanderhoven he was my teacher in high school. I also took every class he offered. Mainly english and Media classes and Journalism. He was a very forward thinking teacher and was not afraid to let us make our mistakes while at the same time encouraging us to try again! Great Teacher and he made his classes fun!
Ok back to a lie down and seeing who is sleeping with who on OLTL
MEK: A freaking Black Widow??? I would have to move!
BARB/WA - Congrats on first!!!
BON - Great blog. My hats off to the teachers in the nest, and to all teachers!!! I respect what you do everyday.....nothing better than to help shape the mind of a child!! I know oftentimes its a thankless job......so I just wanted to say THANK YOU!!! You guys are the best!!
My favorite teacher was Mrs. Gardner - my kindergarten teacher!!! She was always so kind.....especially to me. She was very musically inclined and we did serveral little plays or musicals that year. What a great surprise that when my kids went to kindergarten (my kids are going to the same school district that I went to) - they are still using some of the cute vignettes/plays that Mrs. Gardner wrote. I think it has been the neatest thing that they still are using them and that my kids and I share some of the same experiences!!!
GOLDIE - Another day of banging?!!? uff da!!
JOEY - Looking forward to your AI email!! And lol @ the drunk blogging last night.....at least you were having FUN!!!
Happy Birthday Just Lin~
Happy Birthday George!~
Congrats on 1st Barb~
I just love teachers....I sleep with one~ :)~ And he's an awesome one~
One of my favorite teachers in grade school was Mrs H. She was the 7th grade teacher. She taught me to not be afraid to speak up....to stand up for myself! It's something I really needed at the time.
Mrs Rounce was my awesome 5th grade teacher. She was so creative and no matter what the subject, she made you want to learn. I ran into her as an adult and thanked her over and over again for all she did.
Sr. Eileen was my 8th grade teacher. She was absolutely frightening.....you had to know your math....or else!!! The funny thing is...because of her, I learned to love math!
thanks bono....this is a great topic~
TINA - So sorry.....I forgot to wish George a Happy Birthday!!! When I was off of work yesterday.....it was fun watching ER on TNT......two episodes from the first season!!! Ooooh, Dr. Doug Ross.....yummo!!!
Hi again all! Just catching up with your wonderful stories over lunch.
LynnD~~Bless your dad for turning Mrs. Edlund around! I hope she learned from him to be less judgemental and more compassionate toward future students.
Grandma Moses~~yw, but your post frightened me....I've been concerned about Randy Pausch's health status as he hasn't updated his page since 4/28. But, unless there's breaking news I haven't heard, he is still living.
Thank you Amicus for the myspace notice.
I had a 6th grade math teacher that taught us the saying "tough titty said the kitty, but the milk's still good"! ROFLMAO
he had no patience with his students and was a smart-mouth lol
hehe..I did Jodi! I filmed 2 little movies that noone will probably ever see lol
If I show either/or..it'll be up for a 10 minute timespan and then yanked! LMAO
60! Happy Birthday Lin!
YIKES Mek!! I don't do spiders lol
My older brother told me last night that my little brother was bitten by some type of spider and needs to get it checked! They are having an issue with multiple spiders in their apartment in SC!
Just got home from errands and lunch with my mom..
Bono - you are not alone - when I read the post - I thought - how did I miss THAT!!!!!
Glynis!! LOL - my dad taught me how to march!! :-)
Amicus - glad those phones are all charged up!! and - I'm sorry, I can't help you with LA -
Okay - you know it's REALLY scary when you have TONS of MEKAL's coupons and there is NOTHING to buy!!! I ended up giving a couple of them away!!!!!!! Heck - let someone else save some money!!
Better go enjoy the day - we were supposed to have rainstorms and "cold" weather - well - it's hotter than you know what outside!!
hugs to all!!!!!!!!!!!
Hello Owls!! I just adore anyone who has the patience to be a teacher. I get frustrated just trying to help my kids with their homework.
My 1st grade teacher, Mrs. Bales, was awesome. She had bright red hair and wore these pointy, high heeled shoes that she twisted the heel around when she was explaining stuff. The best part was that on Fridays we got to go to her lollipop tree if we had been good. I will never forget that!
Some other parents from school joined me in writing an essay for our elementary school's PE teacher. He is incredible! He is like Jack LaLane, has been teaching for 40 years and volunteers so much of his own time for the jumprope and unicycle teams he has created. He is also very nice, which many of us can't say about our childhood PE teachers. He makes PE fun and never embarassing or overwhelming. I am excited to say that he won Honorable Mention in the essay contest that LandsEnd was sponsoring. He won a $100 gift card... not the same as 1st prize, but at least he will know that we love him and appreciate all that he does for our school and community.
Thanks for the great blog Bon!! Congrats on first Barb!!
Joey - hope he didn't get bitten by one of those brown spider things that does bad things to your skin - can't remember what the heck they are called -
and when we first moved in - we had a problem WAY in our backyard with black widows - and hadn't seen one since - SO, this was a bit of a shock....... and the bug spray guy was JUST here a couple weeks ago - SO, I'll have to have Mr. MEK do an "inbetween" spray!!
:-)
brown recluse Mek!!! If it was that, he could be dead! lol
Very poisonous and they were rampant there in SC!
My own most influential teacher was Mr. (Wayne) Tate, our High School Advanced-Placement English teacher. He was a very liberal thinking Unitarian. While that description didn't 'register' at the time, he was my first teacher with a critical thinking approach. His Literature Appreciation classes were very informal and interactive. We looked forward to entering his classroom each day, if only to read the 'Thought for the Day' he would post on the chalkboard. Invariably, he led us to see some aspect of the world from a new perspective daily.
A nod also to my 8th grade teacher, Mrs. Martin, whom I've mentioned on the blog before. Her 8-word sentiment written to me ("Your poise and confidence will carry you far") at a time when I felt I had neither, have buoyed me through a lifetime of challenges I thought were beyond my capabilities. I owe her, big time!

Yes, Joey - that is it - and I thought of it and then didn't think that I would spell it right - so i just left if alone..
I was bitten by one in Colorado - but luckily - since I worked for doctors - they called the "rigth" doc and I was able to get in ASAP for treatment!!
Ronnie - ;-)
sorry MEK, just flyin thru. bbl to talk about the TOTD, busy as all get out today at work~
Hi peeps!
Hey Turtle - we saw the cutest little onesie thing in Target with turtles all over it and I thought of you!!

Turtle - no need to say "sorry" - I just popped in - saw the 68 and thought of you - didn't even scroll down!! LOL
glad you got it - cuz that is YOUR march!!
:-)
Just checking in. I am enjoying reading all the teacher stories. I have to go back to get my babies in an hour. Hope everyone is having a great day so far. It is beautiful here today.
Bon'o, I am so sorry!! Yikes, I don't want to spread rumors. He is still alive. I was more frightened than you when I read what you wrote.
GM~~Don't scare yourself! Luv Ya :o)
Have to give a shout-out and show some Oregon pride for Michael Geisen, just named 2008 National Teacher of the Year. Quite an honor for a teacher from a tiny (pop under 8,000) town in the high desert! (news excerpt follows)
***************
National Teacher of the Year Michael Geisen honored at White House
The Prineville science teacher takes the opportunity to push -- gently and politely -- for creativity over testing Thursday
Moments after getting a slap on the back from President Bush, Oregon teacher Michael Geisen tactfully suggested that the president rethink his landmark No Child Left Behind Act.
With a disarming mix of confidence and humor that comes from facing a roomful of seventh graders every weekday, the 2008 national Teacher of the Year used the White House photo opportunity to make a case for classroom creativity over a testing regimen.
"So often in public education, though, we squander this creativity, we squander the entrepreneurial spirit of children because we place such a high value on being right all the time," Geisen said during the event.
Howdy Owls!!
Bon thank you so much for todays blog! I love the quotes you picked too:o)
I think in any profession, you have good and bad.
I'd like to think there are more good teachers then bad, especially in todays world.
I've had both.
Some that didn't give a damn and it was a countdown to summer break,PED days etc...and
I've had others that have given me their home phone number with their reassurance to call anytime day or night, they would be there for me.
I can't imagine teaching children in todays world.
Teachers today need the help and prayers from everyone.
The parents, community and governments all need to contribute to education.
These kids will be running our countries one day.
IMHO, it's not the teaching that has changed, it's the parenting.
Jodi!! Loved our cawfee chat, you left sunshine here:o)Ty.
Hi!
Bon:
So glad you you wrote the blog for teachers day today! Thanks so very much! We should always celebrate teachers, they are fantastic!

George Clooney!
Hi to Everyone!
BON'O: Great blog today..and I too salute the teachers here in the nest, as well as anyone else who takes on this difficult profession.
To just think of the fact that someone who I had never met before, had the patience to sit down and teach me to read and write and do math. That these same people did this over and over again with so many kids. It really makes you realize how very, very important teachers are to every generation. We couldn't be who we are, or do the things we do--without teachers.
My favorite teacher was Mr. Helms. He was a Creative Writing instructor in high school. He gave me confidence in my writing and I think gave me the best advice of any teacher I ever knew.."Don't be your own worst enemy."
I just wish I could have had the faith in me that he did. I guess I didn't listen very well, did I?? ;)
Going to get Mr. Z on the road to work, and then read all the posts.
i copied this from my email to MEK.
this is so funny...i'm being harassed on the phone! some woman called and asked to talk to the person who handles our coffee service. i told her that we have a contract for that already thank you. she said ok as i was hanging up. i always just say thank you and hang up or they keep you on the line giving you grief wanting to know who we use how much we spend do we like them blah blah blah. so i hung up. she called back and said "that was rude. so do you want to hang up again?" so i said cheerful like..."OK!" and hung up. ((BITCH JUST CALLED AGAIN!)) let me finish telling my story! she has called like 6 times! so after i did the ok and hung up she called again and said "well you're a bitch. and then she started banging on the keys on her phone. so i laughed and hung up. then she called AGAIN! this time she said "i would like to speak to someone about your coffee service." and I said AGAIN "i'm sorry. we have a contract for that already. thank you." and hung up. well there was an agent standing near me and heard every call. the phone rang again so she ran over and said she wanted to answer it. she said just a moment and put them on hold and says dang it's for trent, the owner. i got the call off hold and said " trent is not available would you like his voice mail?" IT WAS THAT DAMN WOMAN AGAIN! all she said was no thank you and hung up on me. i'm starting to feel like we really should change are mind and do business with her because she is so professional and possesses impeccable customer service!

Waving HI to SHIRLEY, EBJ, OUTATUNE, AMICUS, and GLYNIS!!
Waving back at Zona!! "HEY!!"
Glynis - congrats on 100!!
:-)
Zona- it's not like I WANTED to learn MacBeth - it was for some English class and my dad was an EXPERT on that guy Shakespear!!
:-) AND - my dad is the reason I passed algebra - spent MANY a night at the kitchen table with him trying repeatedly in get that to soak in !!!
cpgem - have fun at dinner tonight.
Barb in WA - when I read your email - I thought - no matter HOW nice you are to those kind of people - they just will NOT give up...
Bonnie, I love your blog the reason why escapes me at the moment.
Hmmmmmmmm-
Oh, yes, now I know why-
Miss Rodriguez-K
Mrs. Pillars- 1st
Mrs. Segil - 2nd
Mr. Hand- 3rd
Mrs. Lancaster- 4th
Mr. Thomas- 5th
I'm skipping middle school, because I'm trying really hard to forget those years.
High School
Mr. Lee
Mr. Baker
Mrs. Spring
MEK, you learning McBeth reminded me of Junior English class!
I had to memorize Julius Caesar, wear a togo and twig crown and recite it in front of the class! LMAO
I still remember some of it:
"Friends, romans, countrymen..lend me your ears..I come to bury caesar not to praise him...The evil that men do..." haha
Aww MEK, I'm about to retire as spelling police, so you could've typed the recluse! lol
Good thing you got quick care!
GLYNIS: I was laughing the other day at my ONE visit to girl scout camp..OMG what fun, but what fear too! LOL! Best part..the S'mores..hands down.
MEK: OH...ok..got it now. LOL! I wish someone would have taught me how to figure out those stupid math word problems. I could never get those. One of the best cartoons I ever saw...Math phobic standing at the gates to Heaven..St. Peter says "Before I can let you in, you have to answer this...2 trains leave the station at the same time..."
If that happens to me, I'm toast.
ITEACH: I thought I wouldn't be able to remember the names of my elementary school teachers..surprised myself..I CAN! wow.
JOEY: I was never able to get up in front of the class and recite poems etc., they had to FORCE me..I was a nervous wreck. You did it in costume yet..!!
Bon'O: Thanks for such a great blog! However, I am not a teacher "yet" (but I do help my individual students).
I NEVER in a MILLION YEARS thought I would want to be a teacher, but once I became an aide, seven years ago, I have finally decided want I wanted to be when I grew up! ; ) I think it is so exciting to have your hand in the future to some degree! I did see the presentation he did on Oprah before he died! How touching!
Tink: I was very touched by your memories! I bet that nun still talks about the girl who didn't admit to eating chocolate (and had it on her face)! You're right...she did handle the situation well!
Lynn D: I'm sorry about your bad experience with being humiliated by a teacher! I'm glad you also had positive experiences with other teachers!
MEK: I think that is great that you had a good experience that made math fun. I also love that you included your dad as a great teacher! After all, our parents are our first teachers!
Now for some of my favorites:
It's funny, because if you look at my report card through the years, you could tell which teacher I liked and didn't like because I always tried harder for the teachers I DID like!
My favorite teachers:
Kindergarten: Mrs. Green. She was alway so patient with me for bringing my teddy bear to show and tell each week! As an adult I would see her at church and she would ask me if I still have my bear (and I do)!
I also loved my 2nd, 4th, 6th and 8th grade teachers! LOL!! I just realized they are ALL the EVEN grades!!!
In high school I had an awesome math teacher who helped me to UNDERSTAND algebra! His name was Mr. Gentry. He helped me every day after school until I finally "got it" (and I DID)! He was very patient and never gave up on me! I did run into him a few years back and I told him how much I appreciated him being my teacher!
Well, ITEACH~~If you want to be that way...
1st~~~Mrs. Valastilicia (WAY to hard to spell in 1st grade)
2nd~~Mrs. Erp (yeah, we went there:o)
3rd~~Mrs. Rogers (thank God this was before "Mr. Rogers")
4th~~Mrs. Neely (I think she was about 85 then)
5th~~Mrs. Ramvick (the Aunt Bea look-alike who rapped me on the wrist in cursive penmanship class--I'll show HER cursive!)
6th~~Mrs. Potter (husband owned a gun shop...that's all I remember!)
7th~~Mr. Dixon (my first crush...until he told us his wife was pregnant...eeeeww)
8th~~Mrs. Martin (the one I owe, big-time)
High School: Mr. Tate (English, see above), Mr. Helms (French)
Jennifer~~You can't tell me you're not a teacher...you may not have the certificate to say so, but I know better. You're not included in my dedication by accident or mistake, my friend.
I also must include all my daughter's teachers (esp. in the early years) who recognized that she needed to be challenged. She (and two other students) were given a special reading teacher to help them read higher level books. Katie is still a great reader to this day and I thank their intervention to keep reading fun and interesting to her!
Of course, I also have to mention all my teacher friends who have encouraged me through the years to become a teacher. They have always been my biggest supporters!
Darn...
ok...114!
ahhh...that's better! ; )
Thanks Bon'O! I feel very humbled!
116!
Joey - do you need to have a Retirement party for you??!! LOL
Here's a funny teacher story...
In High School - I took several journalism classes and was in Quill and Scroll and was the Sports Editor of our school newspaper (See cpgem - I was an Al Michael's in the making!! LOL) - anyway - Mr. Nickle was our teacher for the writing classes and in charge of our paper -
He was an great influence in my life!! During senior week - all of us on the paper staff - went around the town collecting for sale signs, bought toilet paper and "Put his house on the Market"!! WEll, we got caught!! LOL but instead of getting upset with us - he invited us into his house for a soda and had a little party for US!!!
Years later - I was out on a Friday night (I was single) and this drunk man came up to me and wanted to buy me a drink - WELL, to my AMAZEMENT - it was HIM!! poor thing!!!!!! I refused and told him who I was - (Kinda creepy that your teacher tries to pick up up years later!!) - BUT- the good part about that night - he realized how bad off he was and got himself help!! He does not drink anymore!!! I check up on him from time to time when I'm in Colorado Springs!!!
(wow, this is going to be a novel!)
Geez -
Joey - I meant do WE need to have a party for you..
see - you can NOT retire!!!
LOL
wow - I am impressed with everyone knowing ALL of their teachers names thru-out the years..
I must have killed some major brain cells along the way- cuz I can only remember a few!!
:-)
120
OK...here are all of mine Bon'O and Iteach!
Kindergarten: Mrs. Green (loved my teddy bear)
1st grade: Mrs. Shoaf (told me I did not "follow di-a-rec-tions" in a sing-songie voice...also said "MEElk" instead of "milk")
2nd grade: Miss Pollenger (she was a new teacher, very cool and kept me motivated)
3rd grade: Mrs. Morrisy: She called me "Jenny" even though I told her time and AGAIN that I did NOT like to be called Jenny!
4th grade: Mrs. Olsen: She was very sweet and grandmotherly.
5th grade: Mr. Miller: He was a grouchy teacher!
6th grade: Mr. Janowski: He liked to have fun.
7th grade: Mrs. Schriver: She was snobby and I felt she looked down at me because I didn't always have the best clothes!
8th grade: Mr. Bollman: He was another teacher who knew how to have fun and teach at the same time!
High school and college are too many to count!
However, I'll also mention my French teacher, Mr. Higby. I ran into him some years ago and said I thought about becoming a French teacher and he had me meet him at the high school where he gave me a TON of old text books to have to brush up on it! He was great! (He also knows my parents and he still asks how I'm doing)!
Darn it...not again!
122!
Idol on- oh my, seems like someone (won't say who) is TRYING to go home..
124
125!!!!!!!!
Well ... hey guys.. I can't believe you remember all your teachers names... I enjoyed the
70's and 80's too much... I can remember things we did... but names...
My third grade teacher..Mrs.Kinniknick something like that .. took our whole class to her cabin in the mountians for a day trip... and picnic... and we did a nature walk and learned about the outdoors in Colorado.. it was cool...
MEK and I had the same 6th grade teachers... the 2 men in teh big class room...was one of them Mr. Walters.. the one was a retired Lt. Col. remeber them... they were like the odd couple...
My 8th grade science teacher ... made a lasting impression on me .. as to the way he made us see what the word ASSUME did!!! Had it written across three black boards in huge print.. and asked everyone in the class What this word did... no-one answered... so he ran up and down the board circling ASS U ME... about 5-6 circles on each word..crazy.. never forgot it !!!
Idol is half over ... Oh my...
Thank you all so much for all your messages about Jesse. I truly mean it when I tell you that I thought of you guys often during the day, sometimes just to hold it together for others. It was a beautiful service that she planned when she was told she was going to die. She had some of her favorite songs played, I can't begin to say how sad that made me feel, but at the same time a bit joyful at the memories.
A special thanks to IBB and Turtle, both of whom shared their similar experiences with me, I know that was hard.
Turtle....extra thanks to you for putting up with me ranting and raving...I'm not always such an idiot.
Again...Thank you owls...you all have helped more than you know...I love you guys!!!
Goldie you are so right... Somebody!!!
Scirish..Thank you... I'm glad I could help.. That is what we do in here... {{{{HUGS}}}}}
OH - Idol is on on the East coast - you guys need to get your DIALING fingers ready!! LOL
IBB - it was Mr. Swanson - 6th grade and his son - remember him - had the MASSIVE military haircut - that teacher - I will NEVER forget him - I got caught chewing gum in class (it was a BRAND new classroom that was off the library and had CARPET) - so gum was a NO-NO - he made me put it on the end of my nose for until lunch time - to teach me a lesson..
If a teacher was to do that today - parents would be sueing their asses - BUT - I NEVER chewed gum in class again!!!
Scirish - ((((hugs))))
OH MY GOSH!!!!!!!!!!!
Goldie...does someone really want to go home that badly!!!????
OH - I just heard on the news..
Mr. Robbins of Baskin and Robbins died today - how sad...
I am now convinced that 'someone' is trying to get kicked off- can you be that crappy twice?
dialing finger is ready MEK!!!!
Okay - THAT does it - I need a private message about WHO wants to go home tonight!!!
STAT!! LOL
big hugs scirish- so sorry for your pain.

Hi Everyone! Tis I, Donna Jean.
I know, it's been awhile since I last posted a comment. I have been reading the Blogs and comments though.
Life has been a bit crazy lately for me and Miss Laurie. I spent a few days in Sacramento taking care of my sick baby granddaughter, since she couldn't attend Day Care. Although she was very sick, and only wanted to be held, I enjoyed that very much! I did catch her cold though!!!
Laurie's MRI didn't happen last Wednesday. I am very upset! Because of someone at UCSF losing the paperwork her cardiologist sent over (actually no one will actually take the blame) they did not have an anesthesiologist available. So, we traveled all the way to SF, used a half tank of gas, and came back home!
Now they are telling me it could be July before they have another opening!!!
This is unacceptable. I have been on the phone all day with UCSF Radiology Scheduling, her Kaiser Cardiologist, and her PCP Dr here in Santa Rosa.
Her Cardiologist PROMISED me they would make sure she is re-scheduled ASAP. I am not holding my breath.
I am very worried, as we found out several months ago that she had to have this important heart surgery, and now they are giving me the run-around! It is UCSF, not Kaiser, that is screwing this up. As you can tell, I am more than a bit frustrated and concerned.
Laurie seems to be OK though. For now. We are still on her low sodium diet, and she is exercising on the treadmill every day.
As for the Blog today, I can really only remember one teacher that made much of an impact on me. His name was Mr. George, and he was my Creative Writing teacher, my junior and senior year in High School. I learned alot from him, and had a lot of fun in that class.
I am amazed at how many of you can remember all your teachers names!
And Tinka, I am glad you had such good memories of your time in Catholic School with the Sisters.
I, unfortunately, do not have such fond memories of my time with the nuns!!! Most of the Sisters I had at All Souls Catholic School in Alhambra, CA were old, mean and took out their frustrations on us girls! At least, that's what I remember. I am sure there were a few nice ones, but they don't come to mind!
But, I must commend the teachers at my grandson and granddaughter's school, R.L. Stephens, in Santa Rosa, CA. Especially Ms. McArthy, Ms. Reyes, and Mrs. Kennedy. They have been wonderful!!! It is a wonderful school. All the teachers take a real interest in each and every student, allowing them to learn and grow in their own unique way. I know most teachers around the country do likewise, but these are the ones closest to my family, and I salute them whole-heartedly!!!
Lynn, I have been reading about your oral surgery, and how much pain you have been in. I am so sorry! I hope you feel better real soon!
We still have to wait 2 more hours for Idol here on the West Coast, but I am pretty sure who didn't do so well, Goldie!! Can't wait to watch.
And Joey, how thrilling for you to get to go back and visit NYC and see Rosie again! Will you be seeing JACNY again also? Have lots of fun!!!
Lin, hope your Very Special Day was amazing!!!!
Till later my precious Owlettes,
Peace and Love,
DonnaJean and Laurie Elizabeth
I do want to salute all teachers today! I had a very special one at a very difficult time in my teens. I was beginning my career as a wild child. My parents were getting a divorce and I hated the world. I was walking in the front door of school and straight out the back, but I always attended my English class. The teacher was a man my fathers age, but with none of the exasperation or impatience. He would specifically ask me questions, not content to let me glower at the back of the room. He praised me and criticized as well. He demanded more of me than anyone else, and I wanted to sustain his faith. He made me believe that I had something to offer, and because of him, I thought I did too.
Years later, I went back to thank him and found out that he had been fired because he was an alcoholic. I don't know if he was or not, but he was a great teacher. I'm sure being deprived of something he loved doing and did so well must have been quite a blow, it certainly was a loss for the upcoming classes.
Goldie - aren't you supposed to be DIALING - not marching!!!LOL
I was checking email!! ya'll distracted me!!
Congrats Goldie on 150!!
NOW - start dialing - LOL
cpgem - are you voting??!!
I've got 45 minutes to Idol!!
Goldie - taking candy from a baby - I tell ya - you never cease to AMAZE me!! LOL good job..
Tina in UT - I thought YOU would want to know CROCS is having a sale!!! LOL ;-) I got the flyer in the mail today!!!
Yay...the internet is working consistently in the hotel I am staying in tonight!
Wow...what a blog! Thank you Bono and to everyone for your amazing words! I have had a day of meetings where the focus was on budgets and spending and expenses and not a lot of focus on students and I walked away thinking this is not what I signed on for. Your tributes to teachers today have made me step back and reflect on why I became a teacher in the first place. What a gift you have all given in emphasizing the importance of teachers, students and lifelong learning!
Bono...thanks for telling me about Randy Paush's book. I synchronistically started reading it last night...fabulous! When I bought the book yesterday the young woman at the bookstore asked me if I had seen him on Youtube. The whole lecture is there. I see other Owls have included links...I am not sure if it is the same thing..but I think anything about this wonderful man is worth taking a look at!
http://youtube.com/watch?v=ji5_MqicxSo
Tink...I wish I had a time machine and could go back to Grade One again and have you for a teacher! I know you would have been my favourite teacher!
iteach and Jennifer...I love reading what you write about your students and the amazing things you do to enhance learning! You write with such caring hearts! Wonderful!
madame zona...you are awesome! Thank you for being you and for your nice words! And lets keep on talking and laughing...but next time I am wearing Depends!
Lynn_D...thanks for the words and shoutout! Hope you are feeling much better!
just_lin...Happy Birthday! I think your best present will be arriving in about a month!

I can only remember two of my teachers!
Sister Angela
and
Sister Jean
I don't even remember what grade they taught me in.
When I see all your comments with your teachers names, I am so impressed!
I really don't know why I can't remember any other teacher....
DonnaJean~~GRRRRRRRrrrrrr. Thanks for the update.
***Public Service Announcement***
Got stamps, Snail-Mailers? I ordered online today. Postage goes up next week.
**worrying**I know he was up late last night, but has anyone heard from our resident Bear?
Thanks, Joey!! and, btw, I doubt you really want anyone to "peep your page" ;D~ , so I really shouldn't mention this publicly~~ but I keep forgetting to tell you I LOVE the new layout. Reminds me of my very "organized" career binders.
VIG~~The picture comment you sent today of Randy is one of my favorites. What a story, eh?
MEK:
I am not voting, I did not see Idol tonite, I had Beef Tacos instead, and then when I got home I watched DWTS..
I am going over to rickey.org to catch all the songs.
Donna Jean:
Oh my, somebody screwed up somewhere!
Whenever I have appts for my dad I always call ahead and make sure they have all the paper work, referrals, approvals etc. So many times they have not had the required paperwork. And I had to get it all straighten out myself.
I have learned, when it comes to medical test etc, I take matters in my own hands and make all the phone calls myself.
I am confident that all will work out in the end for dear Laurie
Elizabeth.
The important word left out of my PSA earlier(posted while eating dinner, watching news, reading posts) is that I ordered the 'FOREVER' stamps that will be honored no matter how high prices go. I hardly ever snail-mail anymore, but with the news forecasting $5.00+ gas, I don't see postal rates staying static for long.
Gosh, can't say I'm looking forward to watching IDOL tonight. Nor can I say I'm surprised.
Vig:
Hello we have not seen you here lately, and now I know why...
You are traveling!
It is good to see a comment from you!
scirish:
So glad the service went well, it seems this day was a celebration of her life!
Thought of you today♥♥
bon:
My dad bought like $70.00 worth of those forever stamps. The funny part, he did not know they could be used forever no matter what a stamp costs.
I had to explain it to him that is what forever meant!
He cracks me up...
You know what is sad it that I can't remember any of my professors names in college.
Happy Birthday Just-Lin!
iteach:
Sad is me, I can only remember two of all my school yrs...
I lived right across the street from my grade school.
It took me only one minute to walk to school.
Hoot Hoot Owls...Hiya :o)
DWST was fantastic tonight.
It was the 100th show and all the celebs and dancers from previous seasons were back.
But... :o( I think the wrong couple was voted off.
oops forgot to say it was a 2 hour special...so if your waiting to watch it, check your channels, I almost missed the first hour.
congrats (I never doubted you) kgirl on 169!!
Zona- by the way, I left an hour and a half early today. Enough with the damn hammering already!!
Jodi- sorry you had a crappy morning and hell yes a girl can get banged too much!
MEK- I keep dialing, and have only gotten thru twice.
