This Night Owl Blog has given so much! It is a fun place, we don't bash and we have fun being "tedious"! We offer advice, give love, lots of free food and an open forum which can be about anything that is important, thought provoking or just plain silly. And sometimes we just March (some to different drummers, but all together). :) It is not about a single person, it is about all the people on any given day blended together.....Goldie!

May Day!
Happy May Day to you!
by iteach
When I was a child May 1st was one of my favorite days. My mom would help us make Mayday baskets to give to all the neighborhood kids. We always used a white styrofoam cup and attach a pipe cleaner to it as a handle. We filled it with popcorn and candy. My little sister and I had so much fun making these with our mom. Then came my favorite part. We would leave them by our neighbor's door, ring the doorbell, and run. It was so much fun to be sneaky. Even though it was a lot of fun doing it for other people, I secretly hoped I would get one by my door too. I would scream with delight when I would hear the door knock and see baskets on the steps.
Those were the good old days, because May day is now a dieing tradition. I'm so surprised every year to hear my students say that they don't do that tradition at home. I still do it in my classroom. We make a basket out of construction paper. Then we fill it with paper flowers, popcorn, and candy. Finally, we leave the basket at another classroom's locker.
I also still do it with my own children. We make them the night before for all the kids in their preschoool classroom. We don't have any neighborhood kids to give them too. Last year they had so much fun making them and I can't wait to do it again this year.
Did you make May Day baskets when you were a little child?
Also, here is something corny to do since I'm a corny type of person. Let's make May Day baskets to hand out to our fellow owls.
Here is my basket to you-
salty white popcorn
orange circus peanuts
gumdrops
dumdum sucker
and violets from my backyard

Huh even drugged I still made it! LOL Off to read.
Morning Glories!
Iteach: Great blog!
Yes we used to make May day baskets when I was a kid. It was alway great fun to leave them on a neighbors door ring the bell and run. I always loved this tradition.
We made them out of the little milk containers cut in half and then covered them with construction paper and filled them with flowers. No candy or other things tho.
So here is my May day basket to the Owls:
Filled with roses and lilacs, and of course Morning Glories with a touch of Babies breath!
Happy May Day everyone!
As you can see I am alive and moving tho somewhat slowly today. I will be back in a bit with some comments and I will tell you all about my new phobia.
Good morning!
Happy first thru fourth LynnD!
I remember as a kid that we would decorate the "May pole". I guess it must have been a teather ball pole (with ball and rope removed).
We would put colorful paper streamers and ribbon and decorate the pole.
I don't remember making baskets, but it is such a lovely idea.
Will check back later! Have an AMAZING day!
Good Morning!
I loved iteach's blog today, I had no clue what May Day was all about. I never ever celebrated it, I am not sure why. I wonder where it started from? And why it was not a traditon for me?
Hmmm...
Ok, my Basket...
~~White Carnations
~~Kraft Carmels
~~Box of Hot Tamales
~~Starburst Fruit Chews
~~Herseys Kisses with Almonds
Have a great May Day to All!
Happy May Day! congrats on 1st lynn.
Like Lynn, we always made our May baskets from the little milk cartons at school. And always filled with flowers, no candy.
So, today I will hand out my baskets filled with:
*vicodin for those in pain
*chocolate~ because it makes everything better
*pretty flowers to brighten your day
*special brownies :)
*big hugs
*money (this is cyberworld, so if I am giving, I am giving big!)
Have a good day Hooters!!
Good Morning Lynn (1st), East Bay J and Carol - Just a quick note. I wanted to say HI because I haven't been in the nest for a couple of days. After my two weeks of fun I got hit with the same thing that had me sick before Easter. I guess I am not a spring chicken (like Birdee) anymore.
I have never heard of May baskets either. When I was a child living in Halifax it was the tradition of the oldest son (or daughter if there were no sons) to bring a bouquet of Mayflowers to his mother. If he wasn't available it would be the next in line to bring Mother flowers. Out here in the west the words "May Day" didn't really mean much. I am interested to hear what VIG has to say about this.
Iteach - I loved your blog. I could just picture you as a child running up to the doors of neighbours. How nice you still make baskets with your class.
Birdee- Thanks for the hugs.
ZonaBaby - Thank you for the telephone call. It really cheered me up.
VIG - Thank you also for your call. This was our "High Tea" day that I had looked forward to for weeks. I promise I will be well for our next date.
I am leaving May baskets full of Mayflowers that I had shipped out from Halifax just for each of you.
Happy May 1st Owls. And good morning, Lynn_D, EBJ, CPGEM, Goldie and my neighbourlady Tinka.
Tink...hope you are feeling better today. I am looking forward to meeting you and celebrating your birthday year and that will definitely happen later on in May. Big healing thoughts for you!
I haven't been on here for a day or so hence didn't comment on yesterday's phobia topic.
I just went to the window to see what kind of day it is and there in the shrubbery right in front of my window, my phobia was looking right at me! A great big rat! Frick and dang....not a great way to start the day! I'm just not a big fan of rodents (sorry Mickey!!!)
iteach...wonderful topic. I have never heard of May day baskets. I had only ever heard of May Day as International Workers Day. I googled May Day baskets to find out where they originated. So thank you iteach..your blog was a great one AND educational.
Here is what I found out:(from Wikipidea)
May Day was celebrated by some early European settlers of the American continent. In some parts of the United States, May Baskets are made. These baskets are small and usually filled with flowers or treats and left at someone's doorstep. When you ring the bell, you are supposed to run away. The person receiving the basket would try to catch the person running away. If they caught the person, a kiss was to be exchanged.
Good morning! Congrats on first Lynn! You left us! lol
We were all marching to 20,000th on my myspace comments! lol
Congrats to Birdee and Jax! It was a tie!
I'll read your blog later iteach! I am pooped after all that commenting!
ROFLMAO@Mary's quote!!
Good Morning Owls!
Like Carol, this is the first time I've heard of May Day traditions.
Iteach: Thanks for teaching me something new today! :)
Happy May Day everyone!
My basket is boring though, because right now, the only things I can think of are pink roses and Riesen's chocolate caramels. :)
Waving Hi to the early birds:
Lynn, EBJ, Carol, Goldie, Tinka, VIG, Joey!
Congrats to Lynn D, and congrats to Joey on hitting the 20,000 milestone!
iteach: I'd never heard of that May Day tradition... I don't think it exists in Ontario.

I'm 12, I missed Whabby... Hey...Waving a flap of ear skin right back at ya... Hope you are healing well... I took my mom to have the MOH'S done... It is quite amazing...
And-- Amicus... Sorry to have missed you...
HEY!!!
Hi gang! I layed down and dozed off again. Must be why I did not realize that Joey and gang were marching to 20,000! LOL
I want to thank everyone for sharing their phobias yesterday. There were a couple there that I too have. Vertigo looking over edges and heights was one of them.
Thank you to all of you who wished me well. It seems to have worked! I am still tired and draggy today. I look like a hamster with his cheek pouch full but all in all doing ok.
The oral surgeon was great so I placed my trust in him well. Of course the Nitrous express was an even greater help!
The worst part was getting the prescription for the pain pills filled. It was so early in the morning no pharmacy was open. Finally ended up at Safeway in town and had to wait a half hour for them to open as the novocaine was wearing off. The little jerk pharmacist made a big production about the prescription as it was for Percosett. He did everything but finger print me and then told me I had to wait while he called to verify the perscription.
I thought my friend was going to reach over the counter and choke him. By this time I was getting woozy and was gagging on the damn gauze they had shoved into my cheek.
Well folks this is gross but I took matters into my own hands. I stepped up to the counter and started gagging and then reached into my mouth and pulled out the bloody gauze and proceeded to wrap it up in a napkin. I had had it.
It was amazing how fast they filled the prescription then!!!!
All of that for 12 tablets and no refills! I keep wondering if he thought I was going to start my drug empire or something!
Ok Must lay down again! Will Check back later.
Thank you Carol for letting me write that blog. It helped me immensley when I was starting to panic about having this dental work done! Bless you
Hope you feel better Tink!
Congrats on the comments Joey.
Hey Whab, aren't astronauts supposed to be "shaken but never stired?". No wait, maybe that was a martini...
Good morning everyone!
Congrats on 1st Lynn D and I'm glad you are feeling better, even if you are drugged.
Iteach what a great topic! I you had been my teacher when I was in school. Your students are very lucky. Is it too late to send them a postcard from Nova Scotia?
The only May Day tradition I know of is hanging onto a piece of ribbon attatched to a Maypole and running around the Maypole until (A)you got dizzy and fell down
(B)you tripped over someone else and fell down or
(C)everyone else wrapped their ribbon around you and tied you to the pole
Not much fun really.
I like the idea of the baskets. Mine will contain:
tulips (cause they are my favorite flower)
a candy necklace
some owl stickers
peanut butter cups
TOP TWENTY!!!
MAY DAY!!! MAY DAY!!!!!
off to read the blog!!!
MAY DAY!!! MAY DAY!!!!
Hey Lynn D is NUMBER ONE!!!
TWENTY!!!
Shirley ~ I love candy necklaces- what a blast from the past. Those and the little dot candies on paper that you peeled off...happy childhood memories.
I guess it depends on who is tying you up to a pole on whether it is fun or not! :)

MAY DAY!!! MAY DAY!!! (for MEK!!)
Happy May Day Owls. We have a busy nest already.
Great blog iteach. I grew up in So. California and have never heard of the May Basket tradition. I would have loved doing that. I went to Catholic school and since May is dedicated to Mary, the whole school participated in a procession to church and attended Mass. Then we did the May pole thing and it always turned out as Shirley described, with everyone tangled up in the ribbons. LOL
So, my May Basket to you all contains:
your favorite flowers; cherries that I picked from the overhanging limb of my neighbors tree; and lots of hugs for you all.
LynnD: Congrats on #1. I hope you heal quickly from the extraction. The drugs should help keep you happy, and the brownies from Goldie, too.
Tinka: Feel better soon.
Joey: Wow, 20,000 views! Congrats. How long have you had your MySpace page?
Whabbear: Glad you are feeling better.

HAPPY MAY DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's TGIF Eve! Hugs to all you earlybirds. LynnD, glad you're feeling ok. You do bring 'glory' to my mornings :o).
Thank You, ITEACH! I'm surprised at how few of us share this memory. I remember my mom regaling me with stories of her own 'knock & run' May Basket adventures, some involving pranks on old neighborhood curmudgeons. Also, have memories of my daughter and her preschool mates greeting us at the end of the day on May 1st, wrapped in ribbons from the Maypole dancing, with flower-filled (ice cream) cones.
My MayBasket to Owls would look much like the ones I made in early childhood: construction paper & ribbon cones, artfully (?) decorated and filled with whatever wildflowers were available nearby~~usually wild climbing roses, trilliums, wild sweet peas, lilacs, apple blossoms and daisies...maybe even a dandelion or two as they are ALWAYS plentiful.
Childhood MayDay was always that first joyful 'tease'that Spring is here, school will soon be out for Summer, life is good!
Potato salad in my may basket!? Yahooooo...............

Iteach~ I loved your blog! The May Day Basket is beautiful! Your students are lucky to have you. We didn't celebrate the first of May in our class.
Lynnd ~ Hope the "happy pills" are working for you!
Tinka~ sorry you have been ill :-(
Did someone say RAT?? was it dead or alive LOL!!

Mary/Mi~~Love your basket. Good luck in Lost Wages!
A quick fly by to leave a basket. I don't really remember if we did or did not make baskets in grade school. I have a vague memory of a Maypole, though, so maybe we did.
I hope everyone who is sick or hurting is feeling better even as I type.
My basket to you contains:
Homemade chocolate chip cookies
A pastel #2 pencil
A kazoo
Wax lips (muah!)
A single pink and yellow rose from my rose bush
BonO~ LOL!! That's what we call it too!! Since I'm retired we just say we are spending the kids inheritance!
I love that you added the dandelions to your basket! Is there enough there to make dandelion wine?
I have GOT to finish packing!!
Mary/MI...I was the somebody that said rat! It was very alive and looking at me through the front window! Dang!
Off to get ready for work... hope you have a wonderful May Day!!!!
Later taters...
Happy May Day... And Hello to all the Owls.
I love your blog, iteach. Thank you for sharing.
We didn't make the little May Baskets to leave at the door of friends, then knock and run. BUT, we did do the Knock n Run thing at other times. lol
At our school, we always had a "May-fate" and the 5th graders danced the May Pole. We all wore Sunday School clothes and had a ring of flowers in our hair that someones mother had made. The pole had looong ribbons on it and we 'danced' over and under each other trying to weave it all the way down...which usually ended in a mess. It was a big deal.
Lynn~I'm so glad you're on the mend, and there's nothing like bloody gauze to drive home your point. Take care and relax today.
MEK~Have you made a 'sweet-spot' on your new couch yet? lol
I'm a little bit of an older Owl here, and I'm reaching back a few years to make something special for my May Day basket, just for you.
A necklace made out of clover flowers..
A bottle of Evening In Paris, from the 'olden' May Days..
Pink and green jellybeans..
A flower on a bobbie-pin, made out of kleenex..
Violets from my mothers flowerbed..
Hope everyone has a sweet May Day.
ronnie- do you have any black jelly beans left over from Easter? Those are the only ones I like and I'd be happy to take them off your hands. I remember making the flower on a bobby pin when I was in girl scouts(yes, I was a girl scout~stop laughing people)
Hi Goldie~
You can have a "few" of my black ones...I like them too. lol
I was a Scout too. We MUST trade stories sometime. OMG!!!
btw, we also sneeked in to our mother's perfume and sprayed those little bobbie-pin flowers. Remember?
left, left, left, right, left!!!
left, left, left, right, left!!!
MAY DAY!!! MAY DAY!!!
left, left, left, right, left!!!
left, left, left, right, left!!!
left, left, left, right, left!!!
left, left, left, right, left!!!
left, left, left, right, left!!!
69!!!!!
Off to make a pan of chocolate chip pan cookies for the reception following my daughter's school orchestra concert later. I hope everyone enjoys the rest of their MAY DAY!!!
I love chocolate chip cookies.....
Ronnie, I don't remember using the perfume, but knowing the little devil I was I probably did!
left, right, left,
left
75?
75!
Goldie~~
Did you 'Knock n Run' also. That was really fun, until my mother came out and called us home at the point we were hiding in the bushes at our neighbors house, who was the most recent knock.
We got in a lot of trouble for not coming when my mother called...but we COULDN'T.
Iteach thanks for today's blog.
I had never heard of May Day when I was growing up and we never celebrated. I have seen the cones though, especially now that I have children. Our kindergarten teacher makes these for the kids to bring something home to mom for Mother's Day.
Joey~ It cracked me up that you remember the May Pole because I was once told that this is some sort of ancient falic symbol. I don't remember the whole story, but I think someone has a dirty mind to think a pole is a falic symbol. Whatever!
OK, I couldn't just leave that alone, so I looked up May Pole in Wikipedia. If you scroll down, they actually mention that it was indeed a phallic symbol (proper spelling~ look Ma, I learned a new spelling word!)
Now then, knowing that the May Pole is a phallic symbol makes reading this description even funnier:
The maypole is a tall wooden pole (traditionally of maple (Acer), hawthorn or birch), sometimes erected with several long coloured ribbons suspended from the top, festooned with flowers, draped in greenery and strapped with large circular wreaths, depending on local and regional variances. What is often thought of as the "traditional" English/British maypole (a somewhat shorter, plainer version of the Scandinavian pole with ribbons tied at the top and hanging to the ground) is a relatively recent development of the tradition and is probably derived from the picturesque, Italianate dances performed in mid-19th century theatricals. It is usually this shorter, plainer maypole that people (usually school children) perform dances around, weaving the ribbons in and out to create striking patterns.
Here is the symbolic description:
The Maypole is often considered a phallic symbol, coinciding with the worship of Germanic phallic figures such as that of Freyr. One clear sexual reference is in John Cleland's controversial novel Fanny Hill:
...and now, disengag’d from the shirt, I saw, with wonder and surprise, what? not the play-thing of a boy, not the weapon of a man, but a maypole of so enormous a standard, that had proportions been observ’d, it must have belong’d to a young giant.
Potential other meanings include symbolism relating to the Yggdrasil, a symbolic axis linking the underworld, the world of the living, the heavens and numerous other realms. Also likely related, reverence for sacred trees can be found in surviving accounts of Germanic tribes, for example, Thor's Oak, Adam of Bremen's account of Sacred groves and the Irminsul.[citation needed]
The present day tradition of maypoles coincides geographically with the area of influence of the Germanic mythos.
The assertion of phallic symbolism in relation to Maypoles reflects its current semiotic values: celebration, community, youthfulness and the arrival of summer.
Hope you have enjoyed today's lesson. ;0)
OK, and in Joey fashion I have one more post!
For the record, I am now also convinced that the number 100 is a phallic symbol. So congrats to whoever gets 100 today!!
I ran to Walgreen's and I'm back now. Not really 'RAN', I don't break-stride for anything, I drove.
Anyway...
Glynis~~I'm appalled that all of us danced around a pole that was a phallic symbol. No wonder the little old ladies were smiling so big at us. Shizzzz Maybe this meant the impending approach of young womanhood. Thanks for the information...way to go, Wikipedia.
You said that the number 100 is a phallic symbol too, and we all march to it. Just what did Wikipedia have to say about the marching to 69?
Never mind!! In my best Gilda Radner voice.
Hugs to you!
Hey Owls I have been sleeping off and on today. Just woke up to heavy machinery in my yard. The trenching is done and the cable has been laid! Hmmm That sounds a little dirty...
I forgot to say Yay MEK got her couch!!!
BarbWa: I am hanging in there feel like a mack truck ran over me today.
Bono: I glad my Glories make you smile!
Glynis: I read your lesson on the may pole and what I learned is that Swedes have shorter poles than others!!! Poor Swedes.
Mary: Play the slots for me! Sending you a roll of cyber quarters! LOL
Vig: Ewww a rat? Did he smile at you??
I am sending Muuuah's to all! Back to the couch and pillow.
Glynis Wow! Thanks for the background on maypoles.

Hello everyone! ITEACH!!! I LOVE your blog!!! Is this just a midwestern tradition?
I also remember making May baskets with popcorn, peanuts, M&M's and hand picked violets from the yard.
You're right....it was SO MUCH FUN leaving them on the door step and then running away (ringing the doorbell).
Katie and I used to do it, but we stopped doing it for some reason. I remember we left a basket at my grandmother's retirement home (and some of the residents seemed very jealous and laughed as we knocked and ran away). Hhhmmm...that might make a good project (to leave them at places like that).
YEAH - Tina is BACK!!!
Yes, I am enjoying the new couch for all who asked.
Just got back from MEKAL's..
lynn d~ I am not really sure about the Swede's having a shorter pole. It is a much colder country afterall!
Glad you are feeling better today! I loved the story of the pharmacy at Safeway and the gauze. Proud of you!!
Took mom with me so I could use all three coupons..
how's that?
Lynn - glad you are feeling better.
I see Glynis - thanks for the lesson.

Tina - I got foad - and couldn't get back in -
NO - I'm not kidding... I knew Glynis was marching - didn't know who else showed up!!!
CONGRATS - and welcome back!!!
Congrats Tina! Now what are you going to do with a phallic symbol in Utah?
MEK~ did you get that couch for the nest or your house? :D
Iteach: I thought that was cool of your class to sneak in another class and leave baskets for them. How fun!!!
I forgot to leave my basket:
a beautiful purple basket with:
Dark Chocolate

Feel free to send me a good looking, intelligent, single man who doesn't mind his woman a little on the chunky side! (Wrapped in a purple bow)! ; )

I'm off to watch idol extra on the Fox reality channel!!!
Do my eyes deceive me.....or is it a mirage?!!? Is TINA actually in the nest?

I have been busy at work, I want to scream, however nobody will hear me, so its not worth it.
I see Tina is back! How are you feeling? How was your Mexico trip?
Did you sweat? Did you have good food? How is you dad? Is it still snowing?
Oh so many questions and so little time!
Not sure what the heck time I am getting out of here!
I will check back later...
Hope everyone had a good day....
Mek:
I am so very glad you are enjoying your new couch!
Glynis:
What is a phallic symbol? Did I miss something, I will google it!
Lynn D:
Hope you are feeling better!
Shit, gotta go :O)
cpgem - usually when you need to "go", you do need to "shit"!!
Evening everyone...plumbing issues have kept me very busy today..sorry..
May 1st has always been the day we turned on the air conditioner, except for this year. I wish, ITEACH, that I would have grown up with a tradition like you did. I really think it's nice. Orange circus peanuts..wow..haven't seen those in forever. Thanks for a great blog!
Congrats LYNND on first..hope you are feeling much better tonight..
Did I actually see GEORGE CLOONEY in the nest!!?? That must mean TINA is close behind!! Good to see you again WILD CHILD!! But shouldn't you be resting? ;)
JODI: Have a good time at your daughter's contest..if there are any chocolate chip cookies left over..I'm kinda craving them..;)
MEK: How are you lovin' the new sofa?? Have you done a full once over??
TINKA: Hope you are feeling better soon. Love you.
VIG: A RAT??? Oh geez...he didn't have a flat tire did he? ;)
JOEY: Congrats on 20,000!
GOLDIE: Hope Mr Goldie is feeling better..
DIANNE: NO..and you are such a scorch..but I love you to bits..;)
Waving HI to AMICUS, WHABBEAR, IBB, SHIRLEY, BARB/WA, SACBARB, BON'O, MARY/MI, J/LIN, RGIRL, GLYNIS..and CPGEM!! Hopefully I didn't miss anyone.
Off to check the pipes...
JODI: Sorry..I meant your daughter's CONCERT!! CONTEST?? I don't know where that came from...honest!!!
OMG!!!! Plumbing? is that what we are calling it nowadays, Zona? :)~
ok so here in Hawaii we don't celebrate May Day in the usual way....
May Day is Lei day in Hawaii Ne (ne is pronounced nay).....
So it is tradition to lei peeps who mean something to you~ There is also a great concert every year by The Brothers Cazimero at the Waikiki Shell (a mini version of the Holllywood Bowl).
So my basket is full of nothing but fragrent colorful leis of every variety! Step up to get lei'd Hooters.
Well wishes to all that are not feeling well or are on the mend, and waving to all who are here, been here, or are soon to arrive.
TINA: Well..drips..overflows..plunging...lots of plunging...yeah, I think so... ;)
124
oops 125 by the wrong count...lol
KGRL: Is it ok if I get lei'd in about five days?? ;)
Hey Tina, good to see you back.
MEK: Have you and Mr. MEK 'christened' your new couch yet???? Bwaaaahaaaaahaaaa
Zona: Are you still sick? You should call that doc.
Hi K-girl. Thanks for the lay er lei
SACBARB: I'm too afraid he'll find something..
May Day is Lei Day in Hawaii
Garlands of flowers everywhere
All of the colors in the rainbow
Maidens with blossoms in their hair
Flowers that mean we should be happy
Throwing aside a load of care
Oh, May Day is Lei Day in Hawaii
May Day is happy days out there
This is a famous song that is sung by many on this day, written by Auntie Genoa Keawe who just passed away about a month ago~
what a germ? go to the Doc Zona, and get a few horse pills to knock that crud outta you~
KGRL: No, a germ I could handle. He wants to run some tests for the headaches..
My tummy is full from all the yummy treats in my May Day baskets and I'm in love with all the scented flowers that I'm smelling today in the nest.
SO GO!!!
I have had migraines all my life. Have had MRI's, CatScans, Sleep Studies, you name it.... I think other Hooters suffer the same irritating, nauseous causing, life halting headaches, and if a test can help alleviate the cause, determine the cause, cease the cause or just plain rule out other scary stuffs then I say go for it!
Other than a couple of needle pricks none of these tests are evasive and should be covered under your medical plan.
Zona Please go to the doctor. The headaches are taking precious time away from you.
iteach I was in a hurry earlier and didn't thank you for the blog today. It was a wonderful idea for today's topics and I'm really enjoying all of the
May baskets.
Lynn D I don't know how you managed to be #1 even when on drugs. Good job!
Tina It's so good to see you back. Sorry you're so sick.

Carol~ did you figure out what a phallic symbol is yet? :)~
Tina:
No, unless it has something to do with porn, I am at a loss :O)
for carol:
A purple and white "Christina Style" lei.
For Whoretina: A "Firecracker" lei of royal gold and orange colors, and it kinda has a weave to it that looks like the numer 8.
