I just came back from walking. I took my MP3 player and was listening to songs. I came across this song and it made me start thinking about all the wonderful fads there have been.
I have personally lived to see Pop Rocks, Pet Rocks, Gum wrapper chains Clackers, Big Wheels, YoYos, Peace Sign, Disco Dancing, Rubik’s Cube, Hamster Dance, That Dancing Baby, Macarena, Mood rings, Roos and Jelly shoes are a few that come to mind for me. My kids would say Barney, Power Rangers, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and a whole host of other fabs.
I picked this video because I don’t think there is a much happier thing that this song. It really gets you to smile, no matter who you are. I think that is what fads do for me. They make me smile and think back fondly of a period of time. Just like music can bring back memories, fads can too!
Gum wrapper chains were an important fad in my life. It helped me to make a way through my parents divorcing when I was 10. I worked on that thing nonstop! I wanted it to go around the house and believe me, it did. I had a piece of it up until a few years ago. It really helped me through a hard time to focus on such a mindless task. I am grateful for that gum wrapper chain. As I was chaining it up, my world was falling apart. It held me together, to go and work on it for hours and not think of all the chaos in my life.
Another important and great fad in my life was disco dancing! My brother and I would go to the teen clubs and do a disco routine. We had a lot of fun together doing that. We would practice and practice on it. My brother is very outgoing and he always made friends wherever we would go.
One fad that made me sad was Roos. I always wanted a pair of the “real” Roos but we could not afford them. So I substituted and got Kmart brand Roos. It just wasn’t the same. To this day, I have a bookmark for Roos at Zappos. I am going to buy myself a pair of the real ones someday.

I've been reading another blog, and am just dumbfounded that so many are NOW proud to be an American. I've ALWAYS been proud to be an American. It's a little sad and scary that they are feeling this way. Maybe it's just their excitement. I hope so~

Bebbi, your blog brought back so many great memories but not because of the fads (although they bring back great memories, too!) but because of the hamster song!!
My youngest son used to belong to a professional jump rope team when he was 9 to 12. He was awesome--winning lots of medals at the Jr. Olympics and at the national level. He was actually on ESPN when he came in second in his pairs routine. Anyway, his team won the group routine three years in a row with the hamster song. So, thanks so much for the memories.
Congratulations to President Elect Obama today as we finally begin to move forward again! Way to go, America!

Tina I think that so many people have felt seperate and not represented in our American politics and policies. For the first time they had and have hope and feel a part of the bigger picture.
Like you I have always been Proud and felt very lucky to have been born in America. Tho for several years I have not been proud of all of the things our country has done. I was actually feeling dismayed by some of the things that were being felt around the world about Americans in general. So I am in the hope group that we can and will move forward and the world will once again embrace Americans in the way we really see ourselves. Proud and compassionate, passionate people who care about all!

Congrats to our new President elect, Barack Obama.
I have always been a proud American, and never more then the day my parents were sworn in as citizens, waving their little flags. What it meant to them was pride personified.
I am huge Obama supporter, and hope and pray he can unite this country and make a change. I applaud the gracious speech and dignified manner in which Mr. McCain handled last night.
On a very personal and sad note- it is looking like Prop 8 will pass in California. This breaks my heart- for my son, my friends and everyone who deserves to have equal rights. It is discrimination- pure and simple. I am praying for the miracle that the last 8% of the tally in CA will change things.

My Goodness, I have always been proud to be a American no matter who my president was. How can one say they are proud to be a American for the very first time. What are they thinking. America of course has its faults, but it has given us so much, the life we lead is a American Gift.
We have our very first African American President, this could not be without Rosa Parks, MLK, Colin Powell etc etc, along the way there have been triumphs, these all make me very proud of America,

If you look at the county-by-county voting totals for Prop 8, even almost a quarter of the voters in San Francisco voted for discrimination! The "No" vote plurality there, and the other coastal population centers, weren't enough to overcome the inland counties up and down the state, many of which went for Prop 8 by overwhelming margins (some 80% in favor).
I feel like I've been kicked in the stomach. All the euphoria over the Obama victory has been taken away.

I feel there is difference of being proud of America or being proud of what our politicians do.
I am proud of American always, however I am not proud of some of our politicians, starting with my old Governor Jim McGreevey (not because he is gay)
I am very proud today, as history has been made, and the people of the United States have spoken.
Michele Obama said the same thing in one of her speeches, that for the first time she was proud to be an American...
Perhaps its me, Perhaps I am to patriotic.. I just don't know..

I am just so upset over the prop 8 issue. It is time that this issue is decided on a federal level. No more state intervention. We are all created equal, then we need to pass federal laws to protect the rights of our gay and lesbian brothers and sisters!
I will watch to see what happens in the days to come but I am ready to march on Washington DC if need be! I think it will take another grassroots movement!

Somebody on another blog stated how they felt much better than I ever can. They said it was about not feeling like the speration that has been created through out the years. For the first time they don't just feel like an African American, a Chinese American, a Cuban American etc... But AN AMERICAN. That moved me in so many ways.
You may not feel it, I may not feel it but looking at the last few months many Americans have felt this. That is the disconnet. IMHO

What is Roos? If it wasn't in the JCPenny catalog or something I could find while shopping in Kaiserslautern then I didn't ever see it. My shopping was limited to the catalog or Ramstein BX. I did love going to the Discos. My friends and I would always go to Reginas at Volgeweh.I still remember the Disco balls and stobe lights that made us look like we were dancing in slow motion.
On another note I am bummed to hear that Prop 8 in CA passed and a Proposition in ARK to not allow Gay couples to adopt children passed. Honestly I have never ever watched a news story that said a Gay couple abused or neglected their children. Geez!

As I said last night, I think John McCain gave a very gracious concession speech and I admire him for that. Our new President has a huge job ahead of him. He is charged with a task that can not be completed easily or overnight. My prayers always include our President and other leaders of our country.
Since my parents were not born in this country, they instilled in us how lucky we were to be born here and how proud we all should be to be American. That feeling never left me no matter who was in Office. Like Lynn, I wasn't always happy with who was in Office, but that didn't change my feeling about being an American.
Bebbi, great blog today. I remember platform shoes and loved them because at 5'0" I could finally look above the chest of some people.
I also remember olive green and gold (I hate those colors now), shag carpets (we had orange in our living room, what were we thinking?), and macrame. OMG, I was a macrame fool. I made so many plant hangers and so much macrame jewelry, I had blisters on my hands.
I don't know if you all keep up with the BBC, but today I found it very interesting to read about leaders from other countries speaking out about the results of our election.

The Prop 8 decision is deviating, however, keep in mind the Democrats are in charge full force both in the House and Senate. We may see something on a larger scale than California. I'm hopeful for something nationwide. Equal rights for all citizens.

Goldie, The vote was close - 48 to 52 with 90% counted. There were over a million people, most from out of state, campaigning for Prop.8. The "No" people just didn't have the resources to compete with that. Very sad.

Like Bear I am disappointed and disgusted that Prop 8 was passed. What alot of people don't know is that similiar props/amendments we're passed in Florida and McCain's home state of Arizona yesterday as well.
I have always been proud to be "American", tho I must admit I have been ashamed of some of the leaders that have governed this country.
Having lived in England for a short time I was quite amazed how versed the Europeans are on US politics and how the average European is quite a bit more educated politically than the average American. JMHO. Lois is right about the BBC, give it a listen I think you will get hooked.

Please know that I am not attacking you, but I must correct something you wrote in your last post. Barack Obama does not practice the muslim faith. It is correct that his father was Muslim, as well as his Step-Father and did spend part of his childhood in Indonesia (6 years) and he was given the same name as his father at birth.
Barack attended Secular grade school and a Catholic High School and was raised Christian. He has attended the same Christian church for the last 20 years.
I just don't want to perpetuate an untruth about the man that was just elected President of this country when the tasks at hand mean so much to all of us.

That fad made me a ton of money so I loved it. I would grab up my Mom and take her with me to Hallmark to buy the bears.The moment I saw that people were willing to pay $400 for Princess then my brain went $$$. I still have Germania & Halo in their display cases with the tag protectors. I kept Dobie the Doberman also and it is still sitting next to the photo of my Angel Doberman named Candy.

It's a great resource (and has some fun stuff, too!). I'm forever checking it because I have a cousin who sends me all kinds of stuff almost everyday! LOL I'm always cautioning my Mom not to believe everything she reads. Some of it looks so official that it really can confuse you, though!

Carol thanks for asking about my mum. Since she has stayed on the morphine she hasn't been in pain. Her voice sounds stronger too. She went for a CT scan today and goes to see her doctor next week.
Bebbi I have been thinking all day about fads. I remember some of the girl in high school use to wear really tight jeans. I mean really, really tight. They would purposely buy them two sizes too small. Didn't leave much to the imagination. I would be surprised to learn if any of them have children, cause wearing pants that tight really has to do damage to something doesn't it? Having your "stuff" all shoved up there like that. tsk tsk tsk
I also remember wearing smock tops. They basicly looked like maturnity tops but all the girls wore them, usually with a turtleneck under it.

I am sorry it took me so long to get on tonight. I got a call and my Daddy is back in the hospital. He may have had a stroke the other night. They are going to run an MRI (they only did a CT scan the other night). He hasn't eaten much in the last few days and he was dehydrated. He went to his regular doctor's appt. today and the doctor sent him to ER for being dehydrated. What a worry. I have a MANDATORY meeting on Friday night and my daughter's got stuff going on Saturday morning. It looks like I will be driving to Norris though on Saturday afternoon.
Oh boy.

Well, I didn't get very many steps in today and I am not going to worry too much about it. I got 8,634 which is above my goal of 8000.

Shirley...I remember the smock top well. We made them in grade 8 sewing. I was very proud of mine, but the teacher was not impressed that I had sewn one side in inside out! It was the only course I failed in high school! I wore that smock proudly anyways!
Along with some of the other fads already mentioned, I remember getting caught up in clothes and hair fads...shag haircuts, Dorothy Hammill haircuts, parachute pants, toe socks, leg warmers, hotpants. All really good lucks!

I love Sisters & Brothers, there gay storyline is awesome and written well. I don't understand why they are "cutting back" on them, this is a part of everyday life. We all know and have friends/family who are gay/lesbian, so include it in the mainstream!!

A quick note from work!
Does anyone remember wearing puka shells (I may have spelled it wrong).
I had several different puka necklaces, my favorite had turquoise along with the shells.

Friendship Bracelets got me. I forgot about those, but those came back in when my daughter was in middle school too, during the summer they wore them a couple of summers. Also, they had the braided thing put in their hair.

I can not get over the feelings I have of profound sadness and anger today. I still can not believe that people have voted to deny my son the same rights I have. I really can not express how disappointed I feel today. I would never try to stop my son from moving back to London or somewhere where his choice would be accepted.
I am proud to be an American, I just am not proud of some Americans.

Goldie: I understand your anger and confusion that the Prop 8 passed. I am a strong believer that justice will be brought to the surface. It may take a while, but it will happen. Look how long the African American People had to wait to get the thrill of having a president that is of their race. I think all battles take time and the love, sweat and perseverence that makes the victory sweeter. The day will come with the scales of justice tip in favor of the common sense need for people to be acknowledged that are in loving, healthy and whole relationships no matter what sex, race, religion, etc. they may be.
I have always been proud to be an American too. I am really proud that are country chooses diversity and acceptance. Maybe the acceptance is lacking for now with Prop 8, but I firmly believe that it will come to pass.
I hope that you, Whabby and everyone keeps up the hope and the light.
Personally, I also hope that one day we can have a female president too.

Bebbi, Zona and Lois - I left too soon. If I had waited a few minutes we could have had fun shooting baskets. Oh yeah, I forgot Bebbie's dog stole my ball. VIG is off to the gym and I am off to eat something. I think VIG will exercise for me. At least she said she would. That way I can eat more without gaining weight.

And if anything, it's getting worse rather than better. Why? When you look at the big picture, something quite frightening and horrible is lurking within the results of yesterday's voting. Prop 8 passed, but a similar amendment passed in Arizona too, and in Florida, where it needed a 60% majority, and got it.
And then there's this little nugget, which I just posted over on the Rossblog:

Let me now turn to a variation on this whole theme. I didn't pay much attention to ballot initiatives outside California (my bad), so I was completely ignorant of a certain Arkansas initiative.
I'm ignorant no longer. From Time Magazine online today:
"The majority of voters in Arkansas — more than 57% — favored a measure that will prohibit unmarried, cohabiting couples from adopting children or serving as foster parents. The ballot initiative was introduced by the conservative Family Council in an effort to slow the "gay agenda".
This measure affects gay couples and unmarried straight couples alike; the "Family Council" elected to not mention homosexual couples explicity in the wording to prevent legal challenges to the measure before it went to voters.
Doing a little research, I found that the history and ultimate fate of this initiative were very similar to Proposition 8. In multiple polls leading up to the election, the initiative was opposed by a comfortable majority. But yesterday, in the privacy of the voting booth, true colors emerged, and the initiative passed by an equally comfortable majority.
Let's put a human face on this, shall we? Ross himself has said repeatedly that he'd like to raise a child some day. Most of you know Trey Hatfield, one of the most popular (not to mention one of the nicest) BBs in Rossland. Trey is a gay male Texan who has adopted and raised three children. When you interact with him in chat, it is patently clear that these kids are the center and light of his life.
Imagine a world in which Trey had NOT BEEN ALLOWED to adopt those children; a world in which the lights of his life were extinguished before they could even be lit.
You don't have to imagine such a world, and you don't have to travel very far from where Trey lives to find it, because the good folks of Arkansas just created it.

VIG, I read that the reason Grey's is ending the story line with Erica and Callie is that there is no chemistry between them and they feel it's not working out. I also read they are bringing in a new girl, a best friend of Meridith's, who will do a lot of flirting with Callie but it won't go much past that. I'm also guessing that there's more to the story about the actress who plays Erica Hahn and the network.

Bear and Goldie I, too, am absolutely disgusted about Prop. 8! Apparently, people believed the hateful scare tactics of the proponents. To me, it is discrimination, plain and simple. As for some of those other things that passed in the other states, mind-blowing, really. It's like civilization took a giant step backwards.

J/L: It was Roland. So, same old, same old, really.
And, yep, mind blowing is a good word for what happened last night. And the ironies are starting to sink in. I, along with so many others, was in tears early last night, I was so happy that the country had matured to the point where it could elect an African American, and so delirious with happiness FOR African Americans.
And then, what do I find out today? That the unusually large turnout of African Americans in California to vote for Obama doomed us on Prop 8, because fully 70% of them voted "Yes" on it.
How can black churches, of all places, be advocating intolerance and recommending that people act in the voting booth to TAKE AWAY other people's freedom?
I'm just flabbergasted.
You know what I feel like doing right now? Starting a grass-roots movement to put a proposition on the next California ballot that would ELIMINATE the right of people who marry in certain Christian churches (all the ones that preached in favor of Prop 8, black and white), to get divorced.
I'd call it the preserve marriage act, or something like that. And it would be for the protection of children, naturally.
That way, I'd get an opportunity to vote on THEIR marriages, and restrict THEIR freedoms.
I wonder how they'd like that.
Bear It is indeed a very sad situation and also why there are so many black men on the down low. That, of course, has serious negative ramifications.
There is a demonstration of people opposing Prop 8 going on right now in Sacramento. According to the news, the people are surrounding the Capitol building and it is a very peaceful demonstration. Someone spoke and said the marriages that have already taken place will stand because the Prop is not retroactive.
Oh, they just said another demonstration was going on in L.A. with 2500 people.

BEBBI - Great blog.....I'm guilty of adding to the macrame in the 70's too!!! My Dad had been in a car accident and I remember that he was laid up for quite a long time. One thing that he did when he was home was....go figure....macrame!!! If we had a potted plant, it was hanging from a macrame plant hanger, and wait the best one....we had the macramed OWL!!! I'm not quite sure where that owl is, but it sure would be fun to see it again!!

TURTLE...Thanks for posting to clarify the truth about Obama's religion. Even if he was in fact Muslim...or Jewish...or Protestant...or Buddhist...or Agnostic...should it really matter? While it is true that the 9/11 terrorists were Muslim, does that really mean ALL Muslims are terrorists? I think NOT. As someone who has faced anti-semitism head on, I can only say that there are good and bad in ALL religions, colors, heritages, ethnicities, orientations and political parties. The last time I looked this was the United States of America...not the United States of White, Christian or straight or(insert your word of choice here)America.
Part of what makes this country so great is we do accept everyone. The melting pot of people is something to be proud of. If not for the immigrants that built this country, where would we be. It is not only Native Americans that made us the powerhouse we are, gave us the technologies we have, the books we read, the movies we watch and the freedoms we enjoy...but sadly often take for granted.
I AM and ALWAYs was and WILL BE a proud AMERICAN. Even if not always proud of some of the actions or decisions we make. But, we have that right to feel that way and the constitutional right to express that. And the resposnisbility to vote with our convictions.
We must remember to let the bell of freedom toll for EVERYONE.

GOLDIE and WHABBEAR and TURTLE...I am saddened that Prop 8 and the others like that passed. Sadly, change and acceptance take time to occur, even though that time is long overdue.
BEBBI...I too particpated in all the "fabulous fads" of the day! I had the fake chukka boots, the fake earth shoes, the bell bottoms, the decorated jeans, the smock tops, the blue eyeshadow, the shag (LOVED the shag!), the Rubik's cube, the hoola hoop, the disco dancing, the gauze dresses and skirts...pretty much all of them! Thanks for bringing back great memories!
