Where There's Smoke.........

by Just Lin

When I was 10 or 11 years old, my dad let me try his cigarette. The smoke seared my lungs and I immediately launched into a major coughing fit. I'm sure he hoped that would dissuade me from taking up the smoking habit in spite of the fact that he and my mom both smoked. Unfortunately, it didn't work out that way. After 41 years of smoking, I finally stopped 2 1/2 years ago but, boy, did I love it while I did it!

Growing up in the 50's and 60's, it seemed that most adults smoked. I remember our family doctor smoking in the exam room during consultations. There was a reading room at the library with big overstuffed chairs and standing ashtrays. You could smoke in movie theaters, in grocery stores, and on airplanes. You could basically smoke anywhere and everywhere. There weren't nearly as many ads on TV then as there are now, but many of them were for cigarettes. The most memorable ones are probably the Old Gold dancing cigarette pack with a woman's dancing legs sticking out from the bottom of the pack and the little Philip Morris man. The rugged Marlboro man would come later.

Hollywood stars had glamour shots taken while holding or smoking a cigarette. Cigarettes played a prominent part in the movies of the time, adding a level of nuance to the mood. They could convey revelry and good times, mystery and intrigue, wit and sophistication, or sultry, smoldering passion. I mean, really, who wouldn't want to smoke?

I was the last one in my group of friends to start smoking. I started by bumming a cigarette now and then. Once I got serious about it and started buying my own, it was Pall Malls until I found my true love, Kools.

I remember one night in the mid 60's when some girlfriends and I were just cruising around in the car, smoking and laughing and being silly. My best friend, Alice, was the driver and she thought she was really sophisticated with her cigarette holder. Suddenly, her lit cigarette ejected out of the holder and fell to the floor board and out of sight. We all started yelling and screaming about it as she slammed on the brakes, right in the middle of this huge boulevard, and jumped out to find the cigarette. We laughed about it so many times later.

I know our nest has smokers, ex-smokers and non-smokers. I would love to hear why the smokers started smoking, why the ex-smokers quit and why the non-smokers never started.

Just Lin I smoked for about 20 years. While I was living in my mother's house I was not aloud to smoke indoors. So in rainstorms and blizzards I smoked outside or in my car.

On March 13th,2000 at about 1am I was going to have a final cigarette before going to bed. I held the cigarette in my fingers for a minute debating whether to light it or not. I decided not to. The half pack I had open I ripped up and put in the garbage, then I went to the cupboard and did the same thing to the two packs that were there. With the exception of a couple times when I was drunk, I haven't had a cigarette since.

Lynn D I was bored one day so I decided to count how many blogs everyone had written and then I decided to see who had been first the most. It's quite amusing to watch:)

Today's blog has very apt timing!! I recently bought Herbal cigarettes, hoping they would help me stop smoking. I thought that maybe they would help with those times where you wanted the cigarette just to have in your hand. For instance, when you are having your morning coffee...

I smoke ultra light menthol's, so I was torn between getting the menthol or the light Herbal (for some reason they don't come in both). I chose the menthol figuring they would be the closest to what I actually smoke. OMG! These things are like freakin Chesterfields. I have smoked exactly ONE! And choked my head off while doing it. Not being one to give up, I have now ordered a filter/holder thingy, which will limit me to smoking the damn things in the house, as I cannot imagine flailing around a cigarette holder in public.. I now have about $40.00 into this project, with no idea if it is even going to help....Oh and did I mention that the Herbal cigarettes smell like Pot???

scirish said...

Shirley...What made you decide not to smoke again??? I wish I could just do what you did, but the mere thought of throwing my cigarettes away gives me the shivers...I'm weak, I tell you, weak!

Morning Glories! Even Scrishy and Shirley! LMAO

Wow Just Lin where do I start. I started smoking when I was about 16. Like you it was just once in a while. Unfortunately it took and I am still smoking today.

Why did I start? Because everybody else did, damn peer pressure. I too remember the days of being able to smoke just about everywhere! Now I look back and think how crazy is that?

Why do I still smoke? Well because I love the first cig in the morning with my coffee and really the best cigarette is just after a meal! It is a purely sensual and instant gratification habit. I just plain like it.

Why can't I quit? Well it has become of late a love-hate relationship. I want to quit and have tried several times, but when the stress gets to me I reach for the ol' cigarette. I am from a family of addicts. Whether it be alcohol or drugs. My addiction is tobacco. I just can't decide which is worse, slowly killing myself with my drug of choice or drinking and drugging my way to death. Pretty morbid thoughts those!

Last year I even got the new Chantix drug to quit smoking. Then I read the warnings on the box and freaked out! I suffer from depression and evidently this drug can aggravate that to a suicide ideation. Well hell now I have to choose between being addicted until I am dead or going to the light drugged up to quit smoking?

Crap this is just to hard to decide! I won't even go into the weight issues that go round and round in my head when I think about quitting. Ok now I need a cigarette! I am stressed out again.

There is also an element of flipping the finger to my smoking now. It is like everyone is trying to control me and that above all else drives me crazy! Yeah I get we smokers are the new Pariah's you light up in public and just wait for the Puritan's to come running with a glass of water to toss at you or the evil look of disgust. The teenager in me still lives because I just stare them down as I smoke my cigarette and think hah screw you! I know I know. I still have issues!

Sorry for the long post but you can see where I have thought this through many times.

I may have to book a therapy session after this blog.

Yeah I know no will power at all!

scirish said...

EVEN Scrishy????? huh! and I was just about to say nice things about you...LOL

scirish said...

Seriously though...Lynndeee...I sometimes think we were separated at birth or something..I truly enjoy smoking and also use it as a crutch when I'm nervous or stressed. My new Doctor is death on smoking and has recommended Chantix, but I am nervous about the side affects too, especially with all the other stuff I am taking for my back. My SO's sister tried it and it did really seem to help her, but she stopped taking it after a month (you're supposed to take it for 3 months). She said it made her feel sick in the morning.

ibebold said...

Well... I QUIT...COLD TURKEY!!!!!!January 1 1999......
50 lbs later I am still not smoking .. but can't lose the 50 lbs either....
my doctor says the weight is less damaging than the smoke!!!!

I started when I was 11...

Being in the military we moved every 3 years...
well we left colo. springs in june moved to DC...and then moved back6 months later..I had gained all kinds of weight over that summer... so when I moved back.. into a new school.. big seventh grader... i found all the kids i had run around with in elementary school ...we walked in the bathroom before class... they handed me a cigarette and i just lit it like I knew what I was doing... needed to fit back in.....

so... January one will be ten years for me....

my husbands sisters kids... 2 girls 2 boys... all gave us such grief over smoking.... the oldest .. 18 now... so she was 8 at teh time... looked at me and Mr IBB and said,...

"PLEASE stop smoking... I want you around for my graduation and my wedding..."

So Mr IBB and I decided to stop.
make it our New YEars Resolution....

well Mr IBB lasted 4 hours... he was such a little boy about it...

So I threw him his cigs and said OUTSIDE or DOWNSTAIRS.. I am really going to do this and i don't need you smoking around me...

The key is... you have to really really really want to quit .. or it is not going to happen...

I truly ENJOYED smoking... like LynnD.. I very much enjoyed that first cig in the morning... but I don't drink Coffee....
But the best smoke was after a meal!!!!true heaven!!!!

hope everyone has a great day..

JUST LIN... Great Blog!!!!!!!!!

Whew had to take Mr. Lynn D to his ride share!

I should say Mr. Lynn D quit about 15 years ago. He was one of those people who just decided he was done and quit, like Shirley! I really despise you people who have will power! LOL

Scrishy the herbal cigs smell like pot? LMAO I wonder what the neighbors think?

IBB congrats for quiting! I got the foot prints off of my back but there is still dirt in my hair!

I have to say I smoke outside. Quit smoking in the house years ago. I am a polite smoker I try not to smoke where someone who is touchy might come in contact.

WA state passed a law a few years ago and there is no smoking in any public building. That includes bars, restaurant etc... If you smoke you have to be at least 25 feet from any door or window. Most of the the restaurants and bars have set up smoking areas outdoors for customers. Tho there were many places that went out of business because of the law.

Ok I guess I better get some stuff done this morning. Mr. Lynn D reminded me that Freaking Thanksgiving is Thursday.

See you all later!

night.owls.sb said...

I have been smoking since I am 16, which adds up to 32yrs of smoking, Yikes...

I come from a long line of smokers, Mom, Dad (cigars), Aunts, Uncles, Cousins etc..

I don't think I will ever stop, I actually enjoy smoking, and yes when I am stressed, I need my cigs. But I will tell ya there is nothing like sitting down at a bar with a Apple Martini and a cig!

I know its not good for me, believe me I have been lectured, and perhaps some day it will catch up to me. We shall see..

The good in all this as with the new smoking laws, I do find myself smoking less.

Good Morning Hooters!
Congrats on 1st scirish- better luck next time lynn!!

Smoking, I did it for years and years. I knew better- but I got hooked when I was a teenager. I quit when I was pregnant both times and I quit for 4 years after my youngest was born. I got a little inhebriated one night, bummed a cig and back at it.

I quit on my birthday 2 years ago. I had to. My health required it. As you know I am diabetic, and the last thing I should have done was smoke. I will say, it quiting was the single hardest thing I have ever done.

Sometimes I get the urge- especially that first cup of coffee or after dinner. But the smell totally turns me off now.

The weekend with the babies was a total success! I loved every hoping minute, but I am tired today. We even had extra visitors- JODI came and brought us all the most fabulous apple crisp and it was still warm when she got here!!!
I love that woman.

Have a great day everyone!!

Good morning Carol and IBB.

Here in Nova Scotia they passed a law this year that says you can't smoke in your car if there are children under the age of 16 (I think)years old. You can't smoke in any public building or even on the grounds of thoses buildings. I think some of the laws are a bit too much. There is no way in hell they would ever have enough police to inforce even half of the laws they come up with.

Scirish I don't have as much will power as you think. If I did I would loose the extra 200+ pounds I'm carrying around with me and not let all my fears dictate my life.

LOL@"Scrishy"! Good morning, Scrishy!

Smoking... read all your stories, and wish all who are still doing it would stop. Selfish reason: I want you around in the nest for years to come!

I never got hooked on cigarettes. I tried smoking as a teenager and had a violently ill episode after smoking two cigarettes in a row... way too much! That one episode did it for me.

Now, clears throat nervously, pot is another story entirely! THAT, I started doing as a teenager too and, well, have never stopped (although with this bronchial illness I've had for over two weeks now, I haven't smoked in quite some time).

Is there any reason to quit smoking pot for health reasons? If I saw some correlations between longtime pot smoking and lung cancer, I might consider it. But somewhat surprisingly, the medical research I've read shows no such links, even for people who smoke way more than me (on a typical weekday, I just take two hits before running). The hypothesis is that pot smoke actually contains anticarcinogens that tobacco smoke does not.

I forgot to add that the year I quit was the year Dad died. After his death I just stayed in my apartment and smoked 24/7. I could hear the raspiness in my vioce and it didn't help with my sleeping either. That's when I started sleeping in a chair. By March I knew it was time.

Shirley(NCC-1701) said...

Carol I agree with you. Our government has enough to do without monitering what people are doing in their cars. I also think it's ridiculous that you can't smoke on the grounds of a hospital. You don't have to stand right by the door but you should be able to smoke in your car on the grounds if you want.

When i was in the 7th grade - my friends and I used to go to the roller rink every Friday nite. And, i'm sure every roller rink had those cool, cute boys that everyone wanted to like them......Well, I had one friend (that my mother did NOT like).. I even remember her name - anyway - she told me that in order for "those boys to like you" - you must smoke, it's the only way to be "cool"...........

SO - those cute boys actually skated up to us (I was SOOOOO excited).. and my friend handed me her cigarette and I took a big ole' drag (remember I had watched my dad smoke for years - so I knew "how to do it").......

I never expected that smoke to expand in my lungs like it did... I started coughing and ended up in the bathroom throwing up for what seemed like days!!!!!!!

i NEVER tried it again....... that was my cure..

My mom was glad that my "bad friend" had taught me a lesson!!!

Good Morning Scirish and Lynn, Wow the contest is getting serious. Some other owls should jump into the middle of this and make the contest exciting.

I just scrolled down and there are a lot of owls who have visited the nest this morning.

Good Morning Shirley, Ibebold,
Carol, Whabbear, Goldie, and Mek. I had to scroll three times to make sure I hadn't missed anyone. I hope you are all having a good day.

My fire is crackling and the smell of my mincemeat simmering is permeating the house. I feel like Martha Stewart this morning.

Smoking - Put me on the list of 'those who hate it'. I have never smoked and looking at the cost of a pack I am happy for that. No-one in my family smokes. As a matter of fact most of Victoria is smoke free. The rules keep getting more strict. One can no longer smoke outside of hospital. I will not allow smoking in my home. Sorry Blog Buddies. You are all welcome here but if you have to smoke it must be outdoors and not in my car. I get annoyed when I see how glamorized it is in movies. You don't see it on T.V. like you used to but it is very prevelent in movies. There still seems to be a lot of teenagers trying it. I think that is sad.

I must bottle my mincemeat. I will be back later to read comments.

Good morning. I am watching Rosie on the RachelRay show.
Great topic for a blog J_Lin.
Growing up both of my parents smoked. I didn't like the odor that lingered in the curtains and through out the house so I never wanted to smoke. When I was an adult I was glad to have my own smoke free home. My parents would come to visit and they quickly learned to smoke outside. My parents no longer smoke. My Mother's lungs were charred black and she was getting bronchitis over and over. Her doctor told her that she had to quit. My parents quit together and they haven't smoked for 15 years now.

Happy Monday, Owls!

JL...great, great topic! A burning issue! Literally for me! I tried smoking when I was twelve but burned my fngers with the matches and that was it for me! Never tried again!

Shirley and Carol...luv ya but I am going to disagree with you on the smoking in the car law! I think it's fantastic! It makes me kind of angry when I see an adult smoking in a car with a child in it. My parents did that and it wasn't until they stopped, that we figured out that it was the smoking that made my brothers and I really, really car sick. Even a hint of cigarette smoke in a car now, makes my head ache and my stomache start to heave. Plus one of my brothers and I have a lot of respiratory issues, that can now be pinpointed back to childhood and second hand smoke. I think sometimes laws are created to get the issue out there and to make people think and react!

Have a marvelous Monday and a whacky week, everyone!

Happy Monday Owls.

J/L, Interesting topic. I started smoking as a teenager because 'everyone was doing it.' I never smoked a lot, about a pack a week and mostly when I was with friends and drinking.

I quit every time I was pregnant because it made me sick and after the first two kids I started up again. After my third baby was born, I decided since I hadn't smoked for about 9 months, why start again and that was it. I did try one cig once when my Hubby and I were in a bar and I was pretty tipsy, well drunk really, and I didn't really like it.

My Hubby tried several times to quit smoking and ended up smoking more after each try.

BTW, I think the legs under that pack of cigs belonged to Mary Tyler Moore.

Waving a wing at all the Owls. I am leaving right now to go see Twilight. Have a great day everyone. BBL

Good morning/afternoon hooters!

Congrats to Scirish this morning, you and Lynn D. have a lot of pressure on you now to maintain the lead for first!

Great blog JL! I started smoking as a teen, it was "cool" and most of my friends did it.

I only smoked about 12 years, I quit cold turkey on April 15th, 1985.

Just got sick of it, threw away my pack in my purse and the carton at home (Marlboro light 100s)

I went to nursing school right after that, and if I hadn't already quit, seeing the man in my anatomy class who had died of emphysema would have done it for me.

The man's lungs looked like someone had poured tar in them, they were black and gross.

As a student nurse, I remember one lady I was caring for who was dying of lung cancer. She was hooked up to oxygen and was smoking away. Smoking was allowed in the hospital, but not when you are connected to a flammable gas!

I don't think I could afford to smoke now, they are nearly $5 a pack.

I have had pneumonia twice in the past 2 years, and bronchitis, so I wonder if the smoking is coming back to haunt me now.

Hope everyone is having a good day so far!

scirish Congrats on first! This is getting exciting.

LynnD Congrats on second! Or is that just rubbing it in? LMAO!!!

I'm really enjoying everybody's smoking stories and opinions. I don't think I could have quit without the help of nicotine lozenges. You just stick one between your gum and cheek. There are different strengths based on the question "Do you smoke your first cigarette within the first 30 minutes of awakening in the morning?". Hell, yeah! I'd light up before leaving the bedroom and going to the potty. I used to smoke nearly 2 packs a day so I needed to get over the ritual of it, which the lozenges allowed me to do, while still giving me a bit of nicotine. Then you wean yourself off of the lozenges.

After quitting, I was diagnosed with emphasema, then sent to an allergy specialist who said I did not have emphasema but I do have asthma. Two of the meds I have to take now are extremely expensive but because of the Rx benefits I get as a widow of a career Navy Reservist, they only cost $18/mo. If I remarry, I won't have that particular coverage anymore. I sure wish now that I would have quit smoking before doing permanent damage to my lungs. Once you do that, there's no turning back.

Hi there hooters! It is a snow covered day here in Mich. Mr Mary has been shoveling snow and counting the days until spring lol!

I pretty much lived in a smoke-free,drink-free environment.
I smoked in my 20s when I worked for Chrysler. It just didn't seem right to me. I was told "why don't you inhale", inhale?? lol. I do remember inhaling once, trying a "bong". I sucked that smoke and ran around the room trying to breath! Scared the crap out of me!
I do imbibe in a "doobie" when available. That's about as risque as I get lol!
Mr Mary smokes. Unfortunately he does it in the house. I escape by closing the door to my home office.
Sometimes I step outside and say, "excuse me, I am going out while you smoke". I feel bad for anyone who is so completely addicted.
I do make him clean out the air purifiers. I got tired of all that sticky tar on my hands!

Is anyone having trouble posting here? I keep getting " do you want to navigate away from this page". I will keep trying....
My puter knocked me off agh!!

Good morning/afternoon everyone!

I started smoking when I was 12 because of a boy named Eddie Tucciarone. I quit smoking at 22 after a misdiagnosed gallbladder problem sent me to the hospital for a lengthy surgery and 3 week hospital stay. That was 28 years ago. Now I’m so sensitive to smoke that I have to hold my breath when I walk through a smoky area or my throat will tighten up and I end up with an allergy headache. I don’t like it when non-smokers cop an attitude toward smokers but have to admit there are days when I get frustrated because the smokers have no idea of the physical discomfort their habit can cause me.

For years I watched my mom struggle to breathe because she was suffering from emphysema. Cancer ultimately took her life at age 66 but the emphysema made her much sicker than she might have been had she not smoked. My stepfather died of a massive heart attack at age 50, attributed to his 3-pack a day habit. My sister, 2 years younger than me, has fought chronic bronchitis for several years and has been hospitalized twice with pneumonia since August. She emailed me this weekend to say for her birthday she has quit smoking. I pray it sticks for her this time because I can’t imagine watching my sister die the same way my mother did. She knows it’s her only choice to keep from doing further damage to her lungs.

SCIRISH - Congrats on first!!!

LYNN D - Wow....you were a very close second.

JUST LIN - Very good blog. I am part of this nest that does smoke. It is not something that I am proud of, but it is what it is. I am definitely one of those that enjoy a cig with my morning coffee, and also one right after I eat. I started when I was in my teens.....and stopped with each of my pregnancies. I don't know why, but as soon as I had that baby, I was one of them that made their way down to the smoker's area..and in my youngest's case, that meant OUTSIDE the hospital!! I realize it is an addiction, it's just not one that I care to fight right now. I have never smoked in my house.....we have a screen porch and that is "my space".

Just_Lin said...

outatuune I wish your sister total success. I only tried to quit the one time and it worked. I was very clear that I was not going to smoke anymore and I started telling myself I was a non-smoker. Even when a strong desire to smoke would arise, if I told myself "I don't need that, I'm not a smoker" and it really helped. It changed my perception of myself.

I vote with the "don't smoke in house or car when children present". That is one thing I never did I am happy to say. I have stood outside in some mighty frigging cold weather. I got to smoke in the in garage, but when it is -50 outside, that is a bit chilly too!!

Don't bogart tha joint mary!

I forgot to say that I echo Mary/MI in feeling badly for those so completely addicted. Had it not been for my illness so long ago, I could very well be here saying I am one of those who enjoys a smoke with their morning coffee. Of course mine was a smoke and a Coke. I cringe at the memory that my ex-hubby and I drank at least a 2-liter bottle every day!

J/L - thanks for the wishes for my sister. I'll tell her what you said about thinking like a non-smoker. Maybe it will help....

ya know, I've never had one of those "special" brownies but what pre-, peri-, or otherwise menopausal woman can turn down chocolate, lol!!

Good Afternoon Everyone!!

Great blog J/LIN!!

I grew up in a family where both my parents smoked..(Newports for dad, Pall Mall Golds for mom)and so did all of my grandparents, aunts and uncles. My mom's sister smoked Raleighs without the filter. When they stopped making filterless cigs..she would break the filters off of Raleigh Kings. I don't remember a family gathering without a cloud of smoke hanging in the air.

I smoked two cigarettes in my life. Well..I attempted to smoke two. Once when I was 10..but I got so dizzy and sick, two puffs was enough. Funny though, I never coughed. Not once.

When I was 16, my friends and I were coming back from an Elton John concert..and they were all smoking. So as not to be left out, I lit up too. Again, I didn't cough..but I got really sick to my stomach. They had to take me home. I never smoked again.

Goldie, wow, it's been a long time since I've heard that saying! LOL!
I remember one time flying to Vegas I was sitting on the "john", I looked down the floor and saw a 1"x2" manila envelope. I looked inside and found 5 perfectly rolled
MJ cigs! I put them in my purse and got back to my seat wondering if I should yell out " anybody lose some joints". I decided to tuck them in my purse. I was a nervous wreck until we got to our room. I gave 4 of them to our traveling companions. Fun was had by all lol!

MEK: Your cure for cigs sounds like my cure! lol...

TINKA: The cost of cigs is crazy. Where Mr. Z works..the tax stamps alone are brought in by armored car.

IBB: I'll be one that does not ship early! I am so postally challenged... ;)

EBJ: I had relatives smoke while using oxygen...helloooo???

SACBARB: My mom started smoking when she was pregnant with my brother..she said he made her nervous from the womb!!

Hey MARY!!! Did you make that apple crisp yet?

SACBARB - You'll have to let us know what you think of Twilight!! I broke down yesterday and bought the 4th book.

Supper is ready....turkey pot pie!!

I'm going back to my book....everyone have a great Monday night!!!

sacBarb said...

Zona, I'm back from the movie and there wasn't as much sucking as I thought there would be.

Jodi, I liked the movie and it made me want to read the book.

IBB, Last year they waited until after Thanksgiving to start the Christmas music, too. I really think before Thanksgiving is too early.

Speaking of sucking, I used to hate it when I would accidentally light the filter end of my cigarette! LOL

J/L, and it smelled sooooo bad!

Hi all and good evening! Congrats on first Scirish...close second Lynn D. It is rather fun to watch the mad race to first!!

I used to smoke about 8 years ago. I quit with all my kids and quit a couple of other times. If I smoke, it is a heavy habit. I know I can never have just 1 cigarette because that would be the beginning of smoking a lot again. I am so glad I quit. I remember exactly where I threw the last cigarette butt.

I started smoking when I was 16, but not really smoking regularly until I was about 20.

I hope everyone had a great Monday! I am off for the rest of the week and I am so glad!!

Just_Lin said...

outatuune LOL! It smelled bad and tasted bad, too, which I found out once when I did it outside in the dark.

Bebbi I remember my last cigarette very well. Isn't it interesting how intimate the smoking experience becomes?

Lynn D said...

Evening Owls,

I have to share this because I am caught between disbelief and laughing my ass off.

I went to run errands and stock up on Thanksgiving dinner items today. I was listening to a talk show on the radio that if I am in the car in the afternoons I click on because the two guys Ron and Don, either irritate me or on many occasions make me laugh out loud.

Anyway they were discussing the fact that there were 11 shootings in the Seattle and Tacoma areas over the weekend. Two people were shot at the South Center Mall. Most of the shootings were gang related. So they were asking their listeners to call in and voice their opinion on why all of sudden this is a problem again.

So a guy calls in and says that he has many friends in the police force and the theory is that the old time gang members that were sentenced to prison are getting out now and are recruiting again.

Well that made sense to me.

2nd guy calls in and goes on and on about how these kids are unloved and no one cares about them and that is why they are so easy to recruit. Sounds like a nice guy right? He is sad for the youth of America right?

So Don the radio guy says to him, we all understand that but do you have a solution to stop them from going into gangs? Nice guy says yes I do. It is a little brutal but I think it would be effective. Don says well what is the answer?

I kid you not people this was the guys answer and he was very calm and matter of fact about it.

His answer? To have public hangings every Wednesday night at 9:00 pm on PBS! ( Can I say I felt like I was listening to an SNL skit).

I yelled WTF and then kept listening because Don asked him why Wednesday night? Why not Thursday night or Tuesday night? Weirdo answered because Wednesday is in the middle of the week and it would give people something to look forward to.

I am not freaking kidding!!!

So Ron asks him Soooo you want these 14 and 15 year old kids who you just told us were unloved and have been abused and are lost to swing at the end of a rope? That is your answer? Weirdo's answer yep can't fix them once they are ruined like that!

I am still in shock and awe mode! WTF I keep laughing in disbelief, I can't believe this guy called a radio station! I think the police need to investigate him!

This guy was so calm. Not ranting and raving, just matter of fact.

You could tell Ron and Don were trying to find out how loony this guy might be by asking leading questions but I think they were in shock too!

Lynn D said...

I keep mumbling PBS? PB Freaking S? I donate to PBS and I am not paying for programming that includes hanging people!

WTF?

Lynn D said...

Oh and I had two cigarettes after listening to Weirdo!

night.owls.sb said...

Lynn:
That would have freaked me out to. The guy def had a screw loose or he was messing with Don and Ron, I am going with the first thought "screw loose"

night.owls.sb said...

And why the heck did he mention PBS?

night.owls.sb said...

I would have had 3 cigs :O)

sacBarb said...

LynnD & Carol, I think the guy was messing with Don and Ron. No one can be that stupid to say that and be serious, can he????

night.owls.sb said...

Sacbarb:
There is a lot of nuts in this world and I never underestimate a soul!

night.owls.sb said...

Zona:
Loved your march to 100! :O)

Just_Lin said...

LynnD I would have thought the guy would want it to be on a regular network station so there could be appropriate commercials from places that sell rope, like The Home Depot! Bwahahahaha!!!!

I wonder if PBS could raise more during their membership drives. Sorry, I can't stop laughing it is so ludicrous.

Just_Lin said...

Zona Congrats on 100. I wonder you got 69 and did they smoke afterwards?

Tina~in_ut said...

LynnD~ this morning I would have been shocked~! Right now...I have two kids I'd like to off up to PBS~

I believe it was Lynn D who got 69 today. I'm sure she would have had a cigarette after.

night.owls.sb said...

Well if she didn't I will one for her!

iteach said...

I have never tried one or had the urge too.

My dad did while I was growing up, so it doesn't bother me when I'm around smokers.

Maureen said...

LYNN D...WTF! I sure hope that moron was just playing with Ron and Don. Phew, so glad I already have favorite shows to watch on Wednesday nights so I don't have to watch PBS!! OY!

Just Lin...I am another one of the smokers here. I started as a Senior in College. I was doing an internship at a residential treatment center for adjudicated kids and the stress was unreal. After each shift the workers would head to the bar and drinks their faces off. Instead, I went to the parking lot of May Co. and smoked my brains out! I don't think I have ever even tried to quit. I try to be a polite smoker. I don't even smoke in my house if I have non-smoking guests over. Nor will I smoke in my car with non-smoking passengers.

Working for a hospital, we can not smoke on the property. Even in the parking lot in our cars. We all gather at the Dialysis center behind our office to smoke!

Not a problem to disagree. I totally understand your point.

I don't smoke in my car when non smokers are present including children. When I do smoke in the car I keep the cig out the window. Don't like a car smelling of smoke...

However I just feel if one is in
their own car, then they should do as they please, including the seat belt issue.

My second husband quit smoking many years ago, however, when he did smoke 2-3 packs a day, he would purposely quit every Jan. 1 through April 1 (April Fools Day, appropriately) and then he'd start up again. He just wanted to give his lungs a rest each year. It used to drive his Chief nuts that he could do that.

Guess it's a bit late to say "Happy Monday, Hooters" , so I'll wish you a Terrific Turkey-Week Tuesday! Great blog topic, JustLin!

I began smoking at 21....quit while preggers, picked it up again throughout a career spent mostly in smoke-filled offices, conference rooms and after-work happy hours (we called them Bored Meetings), until the indoor smoking ban. Quit when it was just too humiliating to have to take two elevators down 17 floors to the loading dock. Started/stopped more times than I can count~~cold turkey, patches, gum, lozenges...even a brief flirtation with Chantrix. Best success with Commit. Never smoked in the house, but HAD to have the first one first thing to start the day, and the minute the key hit the ignition in the car. I could easily live on Diet Coke, cigs, and one meal a day. Now I just eat all day instead......does anyone know a skinny former smoker?

Just reading these posts, I'm lusting after my Virginia Slim Menthol UltraLights. Quick, someone hide my car keys! If I weren't in my jammies...Goldieeeee, I need a brownie!

Just_Lin said...

BonO LOL I'm imagining you in your jammies racing to the nearest late night store.
