Watch and think about an Owl we all know and love and who’s wedding we celebrated here on the blog not long ago and who is now having to deal with the fact that the majority who voted in his state believe his love and his marriage are not real and should not exist.

No More Hate! This law is so wrong in so many ways. It makes me dismayed in this day and age that division and trying to exclude and control people in our country is still going on and gaining strength.
I will push to make sure everyone is guaranteed their rights in this country. If that is letter writing donating money to the cause and even marching if need be.
I personally have learned so much in this election process about the far rights religious beliefs that it is out and out scaring me and making me very mad.
Whabby I love you and your marriage is every bit as important as my own.
Inalieable rights says it all. It does not say except for blacks, except for Indians, except for women, except for sexual orientation. It says for all!

Vig- this is near and dear to my heart. As you know, I have a gay son who lives in CA. He does not have a significant other at this time. BUT- if he did, I want him to have the rights and respect afforded him that my straight son has.
I can not tolerate in any way those who hide behing religion as the reaon for their hate and homophobia. To me that is bullshit. If you took everything the Bible says (as interputed by man)and followed it to the letter- we would be selling our sisters and so on.... you get my drift.
I am less tolerant of this than I am of just plain stupidity.
I actively support the Human Rights Campaign, I write letters and I speak out when I can. I will march, and head the line if I am able.
Whabbear, I know that you marriage is real. It will always be real and I applaud you and Huz. We must overcome the days of Matthew Shepard and the days of church burnings. This country must move forward-not back and realize that:
"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness."

Vig great blog! I just don't understand why this is even an issue. People should be allowed to marry whoever they want and have all the legal rights that are offered to anyone. No one can tell me that's wrong. It's just plain common sense, and the right thing to do.

VIG - Great blog. I am just watching ABC and seeing tens of thousands protesting about the ban on gay marriage. It said the churches are taking the "heat". Let's hope this is the start of something that ends with "Justice for All". Let's hope so. In the meantime we send our love to Bear and Huz, Rosie, K_Girl and all of our other dear friends who should have the same rights to marry as anyone else.

Thank you for your honest responses! I know this is a subject that most feel very strongly about - whether for or against. But I knew that we would respect each others opinions and so appeciate that you have!
Yes, I did write this for Whabbear and for Joey and for KGirl and for anyone who is not afforded the same rights as the majority. For whatever reason. And I know that historically it has taken those that are not impacted directly to get on board and to fight for the rights of those that have been marginalized. Hence, my question, if you believe that banning love and marriage, however that might look, is wrong...what are YOU going to do about it!

MEK, I was guilty of tunnel vision in this election... I was so focussed on Prop 8 here in California that I ignored your proposition, and the one in Florida.
I've been doing my homework on them since last Tuesday, though, and there's no question that this issue is national... not confined to California. I watched a YouTube video of an interview with two Arizona politicians, one pushing the proposition, one opposed to it, but neither one would address the core issue.
The interviewer asked the supporting politician how a gay marriage would negatively impact HIS marriage, and he outright ducked the question, simply refusing to answer it.
And then there's Florida. OMG! JAX, if you're reading this, if you look at the breakdown, by county, only one... one!... Monroe County (which encompasses the Keys and Key West), had more No than Yes votes. Many of the rural counties went more than 90% Yes.
What is going on here? Why are the majority of people across the country still convinced that I and my fellow gays and lesbians are a clear and present threat to them, their way of life, and their children's well being?

Yes, I did see that! It sickens me.
I do believe that they had the wording rather confusing and I know that 1 of my neighbors voted 'yes' and thought she was supporting gay marriage until I corrected her. She felt horrible. I also wonder how many others may have done that.
I do find it apalling that any human being could vote to keep another human being from not having equal rights.
We are all different, yet the same. We are all one and should be equal.

OK, VIG, thanks so much for letting a bit of politics intrude on the nest today! And in answer to your challenge, here's four concrete things you can do, Owls:
1. If you're a Republican, and vote for Republican candidates for state offices, please write them a letter stating your opposition to their position on gay rights. Virtually all the Republican members of the California assembly came out in support of Prop 8, and I suspect the same was true of Republicans in Arizona, Florida, and Arkansas (which I didn't mention in my last post, but which passed an incredibly shameful ban on adoption rights for unmarried couples).
2. If you attend a church that preaches support for anti-gay measures and anti-gay legislation, please make your opposition to those positions known, both to the church hierarchy, and to your own priest or minister. Talk to them, and let your opinion be heard.
3. I suspect there's hardly a single owl in the nest who is in favor of legislated prejudice and bigotry towards me, Huz, Kgirl, or anyone. However, the numbers from this election speak loud and clear. There can't be too many degrees of freedom between you and people in your everyday lives who DO support anti-gay legislation and constitutional amendments, who DO think that Kgirl and I are intrinsically morally disordered individuals who doesn't deserve the same human rights as they do.
I'm talking your husbands here, owls. I'm talking your siblings, and their families. Your friends and your neighbors. Your co-workers.
Talk to them. Talk to the ones you know feel this way. Let them know how you feel about it, and why.
4. March in solidarity with us! This coming weekend, a national day of protest is being planned, with public marches happening clear across the country.
Get involved! Find out where your local march is taking place, and join it!
Because one thing is crystal clear from the outcome of last week. We gays and lesbians can't do this alone. If you straight folks, the overwhelming majority, don't come to see this as continuation of a civil rights struggle that you support, just as strongly as you supported the civil rights movement for African Americans and Women, we shall never overcome.

VIG this is such a great blog. I watched the election returns closely last week, and was shocked that Prop. 8 was passing.
Most everyone I know was against it, and it was so sad to watch it pass by such a close margin.
Prop. 2 passed by a landslide (which I was very happy about). Prop. 2 allows farm animals raised for food the luxury of being able to turn around or spread their wings.
The animals won rights, why didn't the humans?

I agree with every Owl who has written ahead of me. This voting no on Prop 8 breaks my heart because everyone should have equal rights in this day and time except for criminals. I had been there listening to Wabbear in chat making his wedding day preperations and I was so happy for him. Last week I went to my Chiropracter and my PT was trying to tell me why the church feels a same sex wedding is wrong. My PT rambled on and on until I finally had to be rude and just tell him to please shut up.I don't like to talk to someone that way but we were just bickering back and forth and my opinions do count. I'm not that eloquent with words so to Prop 8 and those who vote yes I just say "bite me". Seriously I will continue to sign petitions and add my name to all of the lists that PozMikey and others bulletin out. I have a cousin who is Gay. My best friend growing up, God rest his soul was Gay and I have friends who have Gay siblings. They deserve to all be treated with respect and the same rights as others.

I grew up in SF and have gay friends including my own brother. I have always been so grateful to have been raised in a city that is very diversified, filled with people from all over the world. Since the Castro turned into a mostly gay neighborhood many years ago it became a wonderful, safe place filled with great shops. I'm sorry. I guess I am rambling, but this topic makes me remember back to how I have always felt and every time I do think about it I just can't under stand why people think the way they do. My mistake is forgetting the rest of California doesn't necessarily think like the Bay Area.
One thing the republicans now realize is if they want to succeed they need to get out of peoples bedrooms. Churches need to get out of peoples bedrooms also. Churches are the main culprit as so many hand out agendas for voting. Another words if you are a good christian you need to follow our rules. People really do follow like sheep.
FEAR &IGNORANCE are the ENEMY. I certainly don't understand what the YES people mean when they say RESTORE TRADITIONAL MARRIAGE vote yes. Did traditional marriage go somewhere?
I do write often to my representatives regarding issues. I don't know how much that will help at this point. There are protests all over and I that is something I could do. Maybe I am fooling myself, but I keep hearing that possibly the vote could be over turned.
Our own govener has changed his thinking, and now supports same sex marriage. He is quoted in todays SF newspaper.

VIG Wonderful blog today and I really like the video you picked.
I think the main problem is that so many people believed the Prop 8 ads and their scare tactics. I didn't see enough of a campaign against those lies. It seems to me that the main groups that voted for Prop 8 are the groups most involved with their churches and they believed that Prop 8 would force their churches to perform ceremonies they didn't believe in or else lose their tax free status. I do not happen to be religious but I understand why people would resist anything they believed would be a threat to their church. Frankly, I don't think the No on Prop 8 campaign did a good job of correcting the lies being put out on the air waves. My friends and family all voted against Prop 8 as did everyone I talked to except for one acquaintance and she was misinformed that a) her church would be threatened, and b) that civil unions provide the same rights and protections as marriages.
I meant to write "tax exempt status" not "tax free" but my post is too long to delete and rewrite. :)

Well, I am back from my appointment and I got shot (flu) and now I have to pack for my trip to San Diego tomorrow.
I still have not been able to view the video. But I can tell you I have STRONG feelings about Prop 8. My 83 year old Uncle is gay and he and his partner have been together for over 37 years. He lived with us for a while while he was going to UCLA for his Masters degree and I was never aware of the prejudice against gay people because he was always just one of us.
Bear, I have talked to people at church about Prop 8 but I haven't talked to the priest. I will take your advice and discuss it with him. I don't understand the prejudice of 'Christians" because they believe that we were all made by God and God loves us all, so why would he want any of us treated differently?
Maybe I can take the grand dog and join one of those marches in SD this weekend.
I second all the comments that have already been made, especially J/L's. I also think not enough emphasis was made to dispel the propaganda (lies) put forth by the group in favor of Prop 8.

I have always been a supported of anyone who is in love, whatever the relationship is, as long as one is happy that is all that matters to me.
I can't for the life me understand how anyone or anything can dictate who qualifies as a married couple, state nor religion should not do this. It should be a personal choice and right for everyone.
I do believe one day, all will be able to marry no matter the circumstances. I have to believe that, I have to have hope...

Vig, great blog. I have written to Whabbear expressing my feelings on this passionate issue. It breaks my heart to see him and all concerned being hurt by this.
No disrespect to anyone here, but in my experience,Republicans and "Christians" are not the only ones not backing this proposal. In my area there are many ignorant people of all ages, nationalities, Christians non Christians, the "older generations, I even have a gay friend who thinks that legal marriage between gays & Lesbians are not necessary!
I say this because #1 I am Christian, #2 I am a Republican, and #3 I am pro Gay marriages.
You might be surprised how many Christian/Republicans are supporters. So please don't pigeon hole us..

Mary Thank you for writing your last comment and reminding us that we can't make assumptions about how an individual may have voted based on their religion or political affiliations. We are all individuals. Just like I found it surprising that the Forty-Niners former QB, Steve Young, who happens to be Mormon, had several signs posted on his house and in his yard AGAINST Prop 8.

MARY, You are right. We shouldn't put people in categories. I know that is how I sounded this morning, but didn't mean to imply every Republican or church goer was in favor of yes on 8. I too am Christian and voted NO on 8. Many Democrats voted yes. My irritation is with the Republican party, not the republican population. Thank you for what you wrote, as it is a reminder to watch how one words comments.

It's people like Carol and yourself, the Republicans and Catholics in the nest, who may be able to help us the most in this struggle! Elected Republican and Catholic church leaders can easily dismiss the views of someone like myself, a left coast democratic atheist, but they will listen to you! My hope is that you might work to help us change minds WITHIN the church, and WITHIN the Republican Party, by working from the inside.

I too am surprised at the Proposition 8 vote and things need to change, as we are all created equal. I also agree with Mary that there are more Republicans/Christians (of which I am also one) that support same sex marriages, than don't. IMHO Yes, those that do not, need to be enlightened, but we can not be compartmentalized as all having the same opinions.
I agree with you Whabby, this issue needs addressing, and as proven by past history, i.e. The emancipation of all slavery. I know, a very strange comparison, but it is parallel with proving a positive end result.
It WAS the religious leaders and white women who can take credit for the emancipation of all slavery in 1838. Their actions, after much hard work, finally drew enough attention to set forth congress to place into law the much needed freedom of all slavery in this country. So maybe all the planned marching and rallies will help. I surely hope so.
In closing, I agree with you Whabby, and the love in your heart felt for another human being.

President Lincoln was was an anti-slavery Republican when he took office in 1860 and with the help of many staunch supporters he abolished slavery here in 1865.

World War 1 ended on the 11th hour of the 11th month in 1918. We have two minutes of silence at 11:00 tomorrow at all the Remembrance Day ceremonies across Canada. Is it the same in the U.S.A.? Just wondering.

Dianne, My son and DIL are going on a cruise for a week so I am going to stay at their house with my grand dog. I'll be back on the 20th. I will probably be unplugged while I am gone.

If you are observing Remembrance Day like I am here in Canada or Vetran's Day in the US I hope everyone takes a moment to remember those who sacrificed their lives for our freedom. Also please remember those who are still making sacrifices on our behalf around the world.
After some last minute phone calls I was able to purchase a cross that my sister and I will lay, in honor of our Dad, later this morning during the Remembrance Day service here in town.
Hug a Vet today and tell them "Thank You".
