As most of you know, I gave blood on Friday. This is something that I began doing with my Dad when I turned 18. I have to admit I was shocked when I looked at my card and my last donation had been in 2004!! I have been the recipient of a blood transfusion, and know all too well what a gift it is. The night my youngest son was born was an exciting night, but also one of the scariest of my life. About an hour after I gave birth I thought I was just napping, but my hubby couldn't wake me up. Long story short, I was bleeding out, and the only way my Dr. could save my life was by doing an emergency hysterectomy. Six units of blood and 2 units of frozen plasma later, I woke up in the ICU. Thank God someone had given blood, because it truly saved my life.As we approach this holiday season, please consider giving blood. It only takes about an hour of your time. Back in the day you got maybe cheese and crackers along with a cookie afterwards, but yesterday they had pizza and you got to take home a bag of bagels from Panera Bread!!!
According to the American Red Cross every 2 seconds someone in America needs blood. The American Red Cross serves as the bridge between over 4 million generous blood donors and millions of patients in need each year. All you have to do is go to www.givelife.org to find your nearest Red Cross Chapter or a blood drive near you!!

This blogs timing is so appropriate after the conversation I had with my son last night. He is an EMT as you know and he lives in one town and works in another, about 15 minutes away.
He was called at 5 am yesterday to go to the hospital in the town he lives and pick up blood to bring to the hospital where he works. It was the fastest way for them to get it and it was needed immediately. He jumped out of bed and did just that, thus starting his 15 hour day of work.
Hope you all have a great day. Mr. Goldie is going back hunting for the weekend, so I am going to start decorating the house for Christmas.

Jodi thank you for the reminder! I have not given blood in awhile. The last time I went my iron was to low so they would not let me donate. Time to try again!
I too have had a blood transplant that helped save me! I had a tubal pregnancy and was bleeding internally. After they started the surgery they found out I had so much blood pooled in my body from the tube tearing that they did not have a choice. I don't remember how much they gave me but I know it was quite a bit.
So you are right it is very important that we take the time to give back!

Great blog Jodi!!...I really hate giving blood as my veins are very tiny and roll around...kinda like they are doing their own version of the wave..reading the stories from you and Lynndeeeee puts that in perspective though...I guess I will have to try. I wonder if they have butterfly needles???? Or if they will agree to use them? They work much better for me, but I know they make the blood flow slower...how many tubes do they take anyway?? Ok, I'm all skittish already and not even anywhere near a needle..I have had some really horrible people take blood...It's like they were drilling for oil in there....
The brave holiday shoppers headed out at 3:30 this morning and are now upstairs snoring away....They didn't bring any bags in...maybe I should go out and "clean" the car???
BTW...Inspired by Just Lin's smoking blog, I have spoken to a Certified Hypnotist in my area...He says I will walk out of one session a non-smoker. He explained how this all works very well, but I was wondering if any of the owls have any experience with Hypnosis?
I appear to be talking to myself, which is not all that unusual I suppose......

Back for a minute. Just read an article that a Wal-Mart employee in Long Island was trampled to death at this mornings opening, also a woman customer miscarried in the same rush. This is crazy. I blame the retailers for causing these frenzies on the day after Thanksgiving.
It is disgraceful and sorry gang I think this practice of special deals at certain times with limited stock should be banned.
No one should lose their life because of a damn sale. IMHO!
Ok done ranting. This just terribly upset me.

MEK I know I could not believe what I was reading. These people stampeded and even took the doors off the hinges. The story was so graphic. That man died a horrific death.
I am going to do some online shopping and the rest at the outlet malls during the week. Any thing else locally. If there are crowds I am out of there. Can't take it at all.
Those of you that have yours done already amaze me. I think every year I will be done and then I never get it finished. It seems like it just creeps up and pow, crap it is here already??
Ok...now I have a complex...I leave and everyone starts talking....
OMG!!! Lynndeee...that is so awful! My SO and his daughter went out this morning, but they ended up going to stores in strip malls which they said were not too bad. They were going to go to Best Buy in the huge mall but there was a line to PARK....So they just skipped it.
The strange thing is they go out "just for fun"...This does not sound anything like fun to me...
Hummfff...I seem to have cleared the nest again...

Hope you are having a great day after Thanksgiving.
I have a busy day ahead. I am helping my brother-in-law sort through the room of presents that my sister bought through the years and tucked away. Some things will go to the family and the rest to the Salvation Army. Then it's off to the lawyer to sign the Agreement for Sale on my mom's house. It will be an emotional day so I may not be back until tomorrow.

Ok, I am going to crow a bit. I am done and have been done shopping. Wrapped, bagged, bowed and even have the stocking stuffers done. I pick up stuff all through the year as I go and if the holidays come and I decide I can't use it- I donate it to the giving trees at the mall. I did the bulk of my shopping earlier in Nov and am glad for it. Did alot of online this year when I was laid up after surgery too. Thats the way to go!!
On the news last night they showed people camping out already (6 pm news) at Best Buy for the 4 am opening today! You would have to be giving me a 42 inche flat screen for $10.00 to get me to do something like that! Then only if I was drinking....:)
You are never going to believe where I am....my office!! I am not working today, but I was looking for an address that was in my desk so I came to get it. Then I turned on the computer, then I checked the market, then I went to email and here I still sit an hour later!! I am leaving right now.
The table is safe. Mr. Goldie left for hunting until Sunday night ;(

JODI: Loved your blog today. I commend you for giving blood...what a selfless thing to do. My dad had a special something or other in his blood that made it universal, and he donated regularly. I never have though. I don't know why. I take aspirin everyday for arthritis, along with other meds, and just figured the blood bank folks would run the other way screaming if they saw me coming! After reading your blog though, I'm going to at least call and talk to them about donating.
I'm glad you got the transfusion you needed to save your life JODI, because you have made such a positive impact on so many people. Especially me. I know..."SNAP"!! ;)

LYNND: I'm actually going to brave the shopping scene today. That story about Wal-Mart is horrible! It seems to happen every year, and I'm shocked each time. We only shopped that early one time..we'll never do it again.
SCIRISH: My veins dive...like they know that needle is coming and hide! (I always imagine that siren you hear in the movies when a submarine submerges) I usually leave the doctor's office after blood tests with both arms and the backs of both hands bandaged!
MEK: I'm going to MEKals today..I wonder if there'll be anything left?? lol..
CPGEM: Best Buy is crazy the day after Thanksgiving. Mr. Z and I braved the crowds one year..and have never done it again. Nuts.

I went out and braved the crowds. Ever since my Mom died, I do the shopping for my Dad (for my kids). To make this easier, I had the kids go online and pick out what they wanted. Got Jake done within a 1/2 hour @ Kohl's, and got Sam & Tim done at the mall. I was home in 2 hours!! I think the worst part was just finding a parking space!!!
TINA - I thought of you today. I saw a See's Candies cart at the mall. Who knew we had that here? I hope you get your pic!!!
BON - The sammich sounds great!!! There was only 11 people for dinner yesterday, and we had a 33 pound bird. Holy cow....my bil raised it. I've never seen one so big!!

Jodi...love this blog. So inspiring and important! Giving blood is something I feel passionate about. One pint can save three lives. My Mom who was a nurse, always volunteered at the blood donor clinics in my home town and instilled in me the importance of donating blood and I try to give when I can. Going to Mexico means I can't give for a year after though, because of possible exposure to maleria...so thanks for the reminder, Jodi..I have to make an appointment to donate before I go away.

Jodi, I love your blog today and I hope it inspires more donors. My middle son and I have both 'O' negative blood which is the universal donor. In addition, my son's blood has another property that makes it rare, so he gets called by the blood bank when they need his blood. We both have been regular donors.
In February 2007, this same son had some polyps removed during a colonoscopy (sp?) and the next day he was taken to the hospital because he was bleeding. Long story short, he was given 6 units of blood before they got it stopped. So he also saw the end result of blood donations.
Thanks so much for writing this blog to remind us all of the importance of this voluntary act.
Goldie, congrats on #1. You are up very early. I also buy throughout the year for Christmas (and birthdays, too). I have learned that I have to keep all these gifts in one area of my house so I don't forget what I have bought. But I don't wrap anything until after Thanksgiving.
LynnD, I just heard about that Walmart employee on the news. I agree with you that the retailers cause this frenzy and the practice should be banned.

Jodi, great blog! My son was so proud, he was able to give (with my permission) for his first time last week. My first time was in high school also, and it made me a life-long donor. It's a good habit to start early. By the way, that's when I learned Oreos and orange juice do not taste good together.
Thank you all for the wonderful comments on my Wednesday post. I was traveling, wish I could have responded then. Amazingly enough, we arrived at 7 on the dot. I didn't miss a minute of the show. But I was freaking out a little. We are still in Missouri and will be here until Monday.
I was so disappointed with Rosie Live. I think she was trying too hard, trying to cram too many ideas into one show, I don't know. I hope NBC saw enough numbers to give her another chance.
There's a houseful here (14) and writing is impossible. I stayed up really late, waiting for everyone to fall asleep so I could get a train of thought going.

I'm sorry I bothered you guys with that other sketch idea. I do thank you for reading and offering your constructive criticism. It is still my favorite, but just not right for that show. Who knows, maybe the dynamics will change a little and it will fit well one day.

Hodi, What a thoughtful blog. Years ago I went to give blood with some friends of mine and when they took my temperature they looked at me like I was there to kill everyone. It turned out that I had a fever of 102 and didn't know it. They were irritated that I was there with a fever. Hard as it is to believe, I felt absolutely fine. I must have been a lot tougher in those days. Sometime later I was going to try again, but was told since I had Mononucleosis in the past I could never give blood. That was years ago and since then maybe the rules have changed. So, thanks to Hodi I will check into it.

Retailers ARE irresponsible and have created this mayhem. It makes me so mad! Especially when they know they only have 1 or 2 of an item. They take advantage of the desperation of the poor. Rich people don't do this stuff, just poor people who need the deals.
Did you hear about the lady in California? A single mother of three who wanted a WII for her children for Christmas. She entered a radio station contest called: Hold your Wee for a Wii. SHE DIED! She died of water poisoning because she wasn't allowed to pee or she would lose the contest. She won the contest, went home and a couple of hours later her children no longer had their mother.
Don't even get me started on the way that retailers and other people take advantage of desperate individuals. It just really pisses me off.
There should be laws to protect people from this craps. GRRRRRrrr!

Bebbi, That happened right here in Sacramento on one of our local stations. It was really sad and the radio station didn't really take responsibility, but they did fire the jocks. However, she wasn't a single mother and her children are very young. Her husband brought a lawsuit against the station, but I never heard the outcome. This happened last year right before Christmas. It was very sad.

It looks like they did sue. That really made me sad because it was something I would have done. AND, a nurse called in and told them they could die from doing it.

HODI...i wish i could say i too was a donor, but for some reason unbeknownst to me, i never have. i am thankful for those who do. i have in the past organized a blood drive for an employee's son that needed many transfusions with his many surgeries. Thank heavens mr. hodi got the docs in time to save you. {{hugs}}

Donating blood is such a selfless, generous thing to do.
When I worked in the NICU, we depended on donors heavily, as many of our premies needed blood transfusions.
They could only be given O neg, CMV neg blood. So we were very thankful for those who were regular donors for our little angels.

Our company left late this afternoon, so MR. EBJ and I are relaxing, and enjoying the quiet. We had a houseful of company last night, and lots of food and drink.
Poe was in a bitchy mood, he sat in his cage most of the evening, with his attitude problem! haha.
He did come out and redeem himself when the desert was served, and he wanted a bite of pie!

Great blog and I'm also glad your husband was there. I've needed transfusions in the past and so greatfull there was blood for me.
I haven't given blood in the last four years, but I think it's time I look into doing it again.

Bebbi, The lawsuit was filed by one of the most prestigious law firms in Sac. One of the kids does look older. I do remember that she had one child around a year old and I was wrong about it being before Christmas. It was right after Christmas. And the nurse wasn't the only one to call and tell them how dangerous it was, but they dismissed all the callers.
Mo, Yes the shock jocks do go too far and I don't understand how they get away with the things they do. Just because the contestants sign a release doesn't mean the station can put their life in jeopardy IMO.

I haven't done much of anything today and even took a nap. You would think I was the one that did all the work yesterday instead of my DIL. We had a great day with the kids and family and eating.
MrD went shopping a little this afternoon to a couple of stores. He said he spent more time in line than he did shopping and driving. I was lucky again this year as my daughter and her friend went at 4AM and I just gave my list to her. I didn't really find very many things this year that I "had" to have for gifts. The grandkids are getting to the point that they want gift cards now...already. I am sad no Barbies this year.
Well, I think I will watch some tv and get ready for bed again. I got cleaned up and dressed to go and meet my brother and sil for dinner and now home again and btw...MEK...It is snowing so beautiful out here right now. It really is the first snow at our house and it was even getting slippery on the way home.

In the past I was so much better about giving blood.
The whole process makes me sick to my stomach everytime.

I have rare blood, so that is what keeps me going. My blood is A- which that it self is not rare. The part is rare is that have antigens missing that should be there. That is what was explained to me in a letter from the Red Cross.

I have the video set for private, which I thought meant it can only be viewed by my myspace friends. I really did not want it viewed by any other than my friends.
I have to go back and look at how to edit it so its viewable to friends...

(Nov. 28) - NBC had high hopes for 'Rosie Live,' her variety special airing the night before Thanksgiving. But the show tanked, tying for the evening's lowest-rated program.
5 million viewers tuned in for the program, according to The Hollywood Reporter's James Hibberd, with the program earning a 1.2 preliminary adults 18-49 rating.
According to THR, NBC had high hopes for the special and planned to expand the program into a series should viewers re-embrace the decades-old variety format. Other networks, too, were watching closely since several are developing variety shows of their own.
"There's a notion that the climate is right for the genre to make a comeback," emailed one executive at a rival network. "I guess we now know what not to do, thanks to Rosie."

So many of you inspire me to lose weight. I have been cutting out so much fatty food. And, you have inspired me to get busy with Christmas shopping. I told HODI I do buy a few things early, then end up giving them to the person. I always get excited to give gifts.

Oh my gosh....i'm a little late~
Great Blog Hodi~ I thought for years that since I took medication, that i couldn't give blood~ They come to my work at least once a quarter and for some reason, I asked about the medicine I take. I was really surprised that I could give blood. Well......after I did, I was white as a sheet....they made me stay laying down, and later my boss told me never to give it again. I scared her to death. She didn't even want me driving home~ I waited 2 hours before driving because I felt so awful! I've had blood drawn my whole life....it's something I'm used to....I guess they just took more than my body was willing to give up~ :)~
Today is my favorite day off of the entire year! Hubby and I go shopping! But we don't usually leave the house until 2pm! Today we went to see a special screening of Bolt and took the kids. The guy who was the voice of Rhino was there and gave a little talk beforehand and we got to meet him afterward. Very cute movie~ Then we dumped the kids off at home and shopped until 9:30pm~ The stores weren't crowded and we didn't have to wait in long lines~ It was fun....and we're done~

Oh....and my phone isn't working right....so i took it in to t-mobile and they swapped out the sim card! Silly me thought that they would move all my junk to the new sim card! I lost most of my phone numbers~ So pissed~ I guess I'll live....I know how to get a hold of my mom and mil~
