Today I express my gratitude to the men and woman who have served our country so honorable. They fight for our Freedoms, so we can live among the land of the free, and soar with the highest of virtues. Their gift to us is unconditional, it is what they believe in. So simple to them, yet so complicated to us. For they give themselves willing, they fight for our every breath.
WW11 veteran, my dad, I am glad he served our country proud, and very grateful he is with me today. To my dad, my love, my thanks.
From every country a soldier is born, and from every country a soldier is our hero.
For our Canadian Friends the poppies are near, as they are swaying in the breeze in Flanders Fields
To all our soldiers, past, present and future. We honor you today and always.

If you are observing Remembrance Day like I am here in Canada or Vetran's Day in the US I hope everyone takes a moment to remember those who sacrificed their lives for our freedom. Also please remember those who are still making sacrifices on our behalf around the world.
After some last minute phone calls I was able to purchase a cross that my sister and I will lay, in honor of our Dad, later this morning during the Remembrance Day service here in town.
Hug a Vet today and tell them "Thank You".

IBB is up early and got first!!!
Veterans Day is always a time to stop and think about all of the men and women who have sacraficed for us here at home.
I am thankful this year that my SIL is home with his family and we can thank him in person. I know it is an especially hard day for him.
I have family members who have served in every war. One is still listed as MIA from Vietnam. There are not enough words of gratitude that I can express for them.
So pray for our brave soldiers all over the world! That includes our brave Canadian soldiers as well.
Mary MI I saw your post from yesterday and I did not think you were on a soap box. I thought it was a heartfelt plea and reminder not to lump everyone together and rightfully so! Thank you for your post.

Great blog today Carol. I also think it is worth mentioning that many men and women served our country during the wars without being in the military. They deserve our thanks and rememberance too.
Give all the Vets and current active armed forces members a hug today.
On a side note. Remember my little surgery a few weeks ago? I was in the hospital a total of 12 hours. Got the bill yesterday- which does NOT include the Interventin Radiologist or the Vascular Surgeon. Just the hospital. I almost had to be revived. It was nealy $26,000.00!! I told Mr. Goldie we should have taken that box of tissues we opened when I had to blow my nose!
I can only say that I am eternally gratefull to have insurance no matter how much I bitch about the deductible, copay and premiums. Holy Shit.
Carol- Bebbi had a pedometer that measures your steps. I just got one too, to help me so that I move more now that my legs work better. You can get it anywher they sell sporting goods- Walmart, Target, Sears, etc.

Goldie I was listening to the radio yesterday when I went to pick up Mr. Lynn D and they were talking about a Veterans Parade held here in Auburn WA last weekend.
They were talking about one of the most moving moments during the parade was the group of Gold Star Mom's. The description just made me weep. Yes I agree we need to thank anyone who works for the greater good and does public service, but all of the Mom's, Dad's, Wives and children of the current serving and past. They are the ones who hold everything together IMHO. So a huge THANK YOU to them also!
I know things that I have learned in my research from this election and from my daughter and SIL that have made me frustrated and angry on behalf of our serving men and women. I am saying a prayer today that we change things soon and take care of these people and honor them the way we should. They gave and give so much for us it is the least we can do.
Happy Remembrance Day! Happy Veterans Day! I don't believe in war being the way to solve problems, but I do support the soldiers who fight for us all. And I remember how important this day was to my Mom. Every year we went to the Remembance Day ceremonies to honor her brother who died in WWII at 19 years old. I never really understood how hard that must have been for her until I lost a sibling myself. But I can also never understand what it must have been like to say goodbye to him as he went off to war and then the worry while he was gone. And then to be there, a young teenager, when her parents got that telegram to say he was Missing In Action. My Mom passed away almost 25 years ago and I haven't gone to the ceremonies since, but I think I will go today. I kind of get it now. Uncle Lawrence, you will never be forgotten!

Vig I read your post and I hope you do go to the service today and continue to go in the coming years. Before my Dad passed away I might have gone to 6 services in my life. Since he passed away in Jan. 2000 I haven't missed a service and I vowed there would always be a wreath laid in his name. I wish we didn't have to have these kinds of services.

My Dad served in WW2 as a gunnery officer, and he is one proud veteran.
This weekend, during my customary phone call to him and my Mom, he said something that almost made me cry. The two of them are very upset about Prop 8, and my Dad said that if he were down here in CA, he'd love to march with fellow vets in my support.
Why? For a very simple reason. He fought for our freedom. Everyone's freedom.

My dad was in the Vietnam War. He went for all the wrong reasons. His dad abused him so bad that he thought he might as well join the army, how can life get any worse.
He volunteered for three tours.
He said what bothered him the most were the snakes. He said the soliders always slept with their boots on, because the little snakes would crawl into their boots.
He came back in 1967 to a country that didn't support him. It still makes him sad to this day the lack of support & respect most soliders received when they came back from Vietnam.
He was exposed to Agent Orange. He had prostate cancer at the age of 50. Right now he has type two diabetes and he is thin as a rail. He has numerous large cysts removed from all over his body and they have been cancer free.
My dad told me the other day that the war may have taken a huge toll on his mental and physical health, but it did change him in one important way.
After surviving all what he did he thought it was a sign to turn his own life around at home.
He broke the pattern that his family set before him. He broke the cycle of abuse.
Even though I'm not happy with all my dad's health problems, he sure has been blessed with great doctors at the VA hospitals.
We don't have one near us, so he has to do a lot of traveling. It has been worth the extra miles to Madison, Wisconsin or to Rockford, Il.
I have heard about the press at VA hospitals, but so far we have been very blessed with great healthcare for him.

My mom's dad was killed in WWII, and one of my brothers is in the Army, and has been deployed to Iraq twice now.
My grandpa was killed in the Phillipines and is buried at the American Cemetary in Manila.
My mom has been to visit him twice now, the last time was last year. She took some of her mom's ashes and spread them on his grave, so they could be together again.
It was very therapeutic for my mom.
The cemetary itself is beautiful, from the pictures I've seen. It is maintained and clean.

My mom tried to have his remains brought to the U.S. but for some reason, it is not allowed.
I want to pay my respects to all those who have served, and continue to serve.

Today I honor all Veterans but I especially honor my grandfather who was severely wounded at Pearl Harbor by a mortar shell. He was put with the bodies of the dead soldiers but someone came back and heard him moan. He survived and spent the remainder of his short life in a wheel chair. My grandpa passed away at the age of 53. All of his sons served in the military. My Dad made it his career for 26 years.God bless our soldiers. They are so patriotic and so brave and they protect us with their lives if need be.

Good afternoon, everyone.
You'll notice I blip off the radar from time to time. I get overwhelmed trying to catch up with comments when my life gets busy. I'll catch up eventually. :) I hope you and your loved ones are well.
I had the party for my daughter Saturday. Five girls spent the night, making it ooze over into Sunday. Good time was had by all.
My son bought his first car Sunday. A 1985 Dodge Omni, for the low, low price of $400. One owner 84,000 miles. He calls it the Gold Bullet. I think he is in love.
Yesterday my cousin died. Really shocking as she was only 38. They think it was a heart condition.
This morning, trying to snap myself out of the shocked state, I spent breakfast with the veterans at the nursing home. Most were in WWII or the Korean War.
Even those who don't recall what they watched on TV last night, still remember war as if it were yesterday. Amazing men, and one woman who was a nurse.
Today is a strong reminder to me to hold those near and dear closely. No one knows how much time any of us have left. XOXO

Thank you CAROL for your kind words and video. I seems it has been Veteran's Day in my mind and heart almost everyday since 2003. Bless them for their brave souls that they are here for us. What has broken my heart for the last 40years is the lack of enough care we take of them when they return home. So so many stories of veterans coming home and ending up living on the street. So many of them waiting months and months for financial help. So many emotionally and physically broken. We owe them absolutely EVERYTHING.

DIANNE, Jennifer is our one and only child and this is her first baby. It just blows my mind how fast the years go by when our children are growing up. My child is having a child. It isn't like I tried to keep her a child. She went to Russia in high school and lived in Zimbabwe for six months, but I guess if I were 90 and she 60 I would still see her as my child. It is hard to put into words. Was this TMI? Do I sound like a nut?

Hi everybody! Congrats on first IBB!!
Carol, I am glad several people gave you the answer to the question about my steps. Although, I don't know what they are talking about, I thought I was supposed to count them every day, all the time. It has been really hard to concentrate on anything else. Is there really a thing out there to count them for me? ;)
Carol, also, great blog. Once again, we honor those that have made the ultimate sacrifice and the ones that serve today as well. When I used to live near DC we would to to the Vietnam Veteran's memorial today or on the weekend, they always had a lot of wonderful activities to honor those who serve.
I wish I could get on here more but I have a test I was supposed to complete a month ago that I have not completed. I have committed to working on it after work, dinner, walk, etc. So now I won't be online later and if I am earlier, I hope someone asks me if I did my studying!! LOL.

I salute all our Veterans.Many have come home wounded mentally and physically. My nephew came home from Iraq a mess mentally. He was a medic and had a hard time getting awful pictures out of his mind. He is doing better now. My brother was in Vietnam & my son was in Dessert Storm.I had a niece serve in Iraq too.

After my dad did his basic training. They put him on a train and told him he was going on a boat overseas. They refused to tell him where he was going.
However, my dad figured it our real quick when the train had to stop, because there were protesters laying on the tracks.

I know it is late, and I admit I haven't read the comments yet...I will!
I wanted to address yesterdays topic.
I may be stupid, but can someone explain to me why same gender marriages will destroy the sanctity of the institution of marriage?
How will the marriage of two men or two women negate the marriage of a man to a woman?
Why are we not to celebrate the fact that there are two people that love each other, want to have a committed and monogomous realtionship?
It seems to me that the sanctity of marriage had been compromised long before the issue of same gender marriage came about. Something like 60% of heterosexual marriages have ended in divorce, so I am confused by the correlation.
What is there to be so scared of? If my friend K-Girl finds the love of her life, the woman she wants to spend the rest of her life with, for richer or poorer, in sickness and health, then why should she not be entitled to the same rights (and responsibilities) as my friends Birdee and Mr. Birdee or Goldie and Mr. Goldie?
I know these are rhetorical questions, but I just don't get it.
Sorry for the rant, but I wanted to rant yesterday ;)~

CAROL... beautiful blog. I pay hommage to all the vets, their families and friends who sacrifice so much for all of us.
And yes, I worked tonight!
My dad was in WWII. He was injured in action. One of his duties was cook. One day, as he was peeling potatoes, his buddy was keeping him company and cleaning his rifle. Yep, you guess it...shot my dad in the ass!! My dad never talked about his military service, but he also passed away when I was only 8, so I imagine it just wasn't something to discuss with a child.

LANI...congrats on the news! A baby girl...sooo sweet! I'm getting the feeling she will be one spoiled little granddaughter!!
ITEACH...thank you for your candor in sharing your dad's experiences with us. I am glad he gets good care at the VA hospital. I think it is incomprehensible that so many Vets have to continue the war when they return to get needed aid. Just not right...
