This Night Owl Blog has given so much!
It is a fun place, we don't bash and we have fun being "tedious"!
We offer advice, give love, lots of free food and an open forum which can be about anything that is important, thought provoking or just plain silly.
And sometimes we just March (some to different drummers, but all together). :)
It is not about a single person, it is about all the people on any given day blended together.....Goldie!
Hello everyone. I thought I commented on this blog, but I guess not! I have some time, so I thought I’d see what you all are up to! Guess I’ll just tell you what I have been doing. Tara had her eye surgery on Jan. 9 and is doing well, except she doesn’t like the cone. She’s able to eat her dry food OK, but every time she drinks water, she gets the bottom of the cone soaked. Then when she goes into the litter box, it gets litter stuck on it! It’s a real mess. We take her in on Thursday to get the stitches removed and I hope the cone comes off for good. Somehow, I have contracted pink eye and because I am so generous, I have shared it with Chad. Apparently, I had it for a while before I realized I should go to the doctor, so I wasn’t careful to avoid Chad. I have been using the drops prescribed and I have three more days of that. They don’t seem to be working, though! My grandson, Josh, is taking a month long vacation in Viet Nam and seems to be really enjoying it. He has sent a lot of pics. Not much else going on. I hope you all are doing well.
Hi. Thought I’d add to this blog. We have all been not great commenting these last months. I’ve been very busy with selling my car, going down to one car and changing ins companies. It’s been a pain in the butt and still is…..DMV too. Louis has pretty much decided he doesn’t want to drive much anymore. I’m surprised a month ago I asked him if he was ready to quit driving and he had a fit. Things sure changed fast. I’m going to most of his Dr appts with him now too. I’m finding it a little overwhelming but I’ll keep trying to be the caretaker. Barb, it sounds sad about your little cat. Hope she gets her cone off soon. So nice of you to,share your pink eye I wonder how u even got it? Sounds like an interesting vacation for your grandson. Did he go with anyone or on his own? My cousin recently did that trip and she went alone and said she felt very safe. I wouldn’t want to revel anywhere by myself….id get too lonely!
Mary, I was sorry your team and my team too lost our games! I thought for sure your team would win. Who r you cheering for this weekend? The Chiefs? How r things going at your house?
JL, I don’t see your comments here I’ll text unanswered let u know. It’s been freezing here like -8 etc. it got a little nicer today abut we have about 6” of snow with more expected this weekend. Yuck! Kids are all fine. The girls have been coming over and helping us and doing a few errands too for us. Very nice. It’s very weird driving Louis’s car and not my Lexus. I really miss it. It was a 2017 and we bought it about three years ago. His car is a gmc Acadia and bigger. Oh well..we’re saving money signing off for now night and bye
Dianne, my cat, Tara, has been blind in that eye for about 2 years. She seemed to be doing OK, getting around dealing with it. But, recently I noticed the eye had started to bulge and it was weeping, so I took her back to the vet and he said it should probably be removed. There was a possibility that it could burst and then it would become an emergency situation, so I decided to get it done before that happened. It was less traumatic for her this way. Tomorrow we take her to get the stitches removed and I hope the cone comes off for good. She really hates it! She is such a sweet little cat and has really handled all of this very well! I think I mentioned quite a while ago that Josh and his wife split up almost a year ago, so he did go to Viet Nam by himself. He is really enjoying his trip. He did a lot of research beforehand and had a specific agenda of what he wanted to see. He has already sent lots of pics. He’s been there since Jan 6 and will return on Valentine’s day. He says food and lodging are very cheap. I guess you’re glad Louis has decided to quit driving, although it puts more pressure on you to drive everywhere. I quit driving about two years ago and I’m not sorry, but it does limit my going out and about. I used to go shopping or other places just to get out, but now I only go out for a specific reason.
Dianne, I wrote this in the nest and it wouldn’t let me post it. Can you either copy and paste for me, or put in our texts? “Here I am! I’m on my tablet. I was busy all day. I feed and walked the dogs, did laundry, fed the birds, burned the trash, put out and bought in the garbage container ,made chocolate chip cookies, cooked supper, and all on my 46th anniversary! Jim went to the casino in spite of the bad roads. Our weather has been horrible! Single digits and snow. Schools have been closed for two days, so Matthew has been home. He cleaned my kitchen after all the cooking mess I made lol! Hopefully I can get out tomorrow. I am out of a few things. “, Mary
Barb, I so hope it’s a long time before I quit driving. If I get stuck in this house I’d die! I feel bad for your cat. Exploding eye sounds awful. Do u still see your friends? Do any of them come pick u up for lunch? I went to my dr today and we again talked about Louis and rehab. She said they can’t make him go but she’d have social worker call in a couple of days. Louis and I had a heart to heart talk tonight. She said if he’s given up they would call hospice in..she said she wasn’t suggesting it but IF I TOLD HIM EVERYTHING and it’s maybe put a little thinking into his mind…..his choice. She said his pt once a week wasn’t helping him if he didn’t do the exercises every day. I told him that too we will see what he says to social worker when she calls.
I'm on my pc. Made me "sign in" . Weird. I just clicked on the top of this page where it said "sign in". It took me right to here without using password, which I am sure I don't remember lol! I made it to the store today. The roads were much better. Temps are still under freezing. Zoie has never minded the snow or cold temps. I have to lift her to come in or she would freeze her paws off! Queenie is bigger and loves it outside too. No way I will pick her up lol! She comes in willingly. We have had a stray cat here for a couple of weeks. I haven't noticed her attacking my birds, but does eat the sunflower seeds! Once in a while I see evidence of an attack. Feathers all over the place :( . We have many hawks/birds of prey. Jim just came in from taking Queenie out for her last business. I guess she saw the cat and took off after it. Hope it got away! It has been staying in Queenie's kennel where we keep the heat lamp on. If the temps are above freezing during the day, we put her there for a few hrs. Barb, how sad about your blind cat. I hope the eye heals with no problems. My neighbors son went ti Vietnam a few years ago with his gf. They loved it. They are back now, somewhere around New England I think. He is doing something with ship/boat building/sailing. His parents visited him last summer. He took them on a long sailing voyage. They wish he would settle down and marry his girlfriend and have babies lol! I was his nanny for 5 yrs.
Hi, Ladies! I didn't realize that I hadn't posted in so long. Where does the time go? I have been preoccupied with my issues with my new glasses. Things have gotten better but still not "normal". I feel rather "untethered" from the world when I wear them, especially when I'm in a large space. The eyeglass prescription is stronger than it used to be so maybe I'll get used to it. I've had them re-checked and had the fit adjusted a few times now. I'm so OVER IT! I went to my daughter's for a week during Christmas and had a really nice time. I met her boyfriend's parents and they are really nice (thank goodness). When I took care of her dogs during November when she aNd Jason went to Australia and New Zealand, one of the dogs got sprayed by a skunk and proceeded to rub the smell all over EVERYTHING, including my comforter. Because of that, my daughter and Jason gave me gift card to get new bedding. I just got the final item delivered a few days ago and have my bed all set up now. I love it! I was able to get new everything; bed skirt, sheets, quilt, new pillows for the shams, and a cute decorative pillow. My bed has never looked so good. A few weeks ago, the artist I've taken workshops with invited me and a couple of other ladies to get together at her art studio just to fool around and experiment with some new art products. It was a blast. We had our second get-together last Friday morning and will do it again next Friday. This is a lot of fun for me plus it's nice to get to know new people. It's not easy to make friends at our age. I think I told you that my daughter has been working for the University of Oregon as an Administrative Assistant to some professors and only making half what she used to in her old job. After having no job for over a year, she was thankful for this job so he wasn't using up so much of her savings. Well, out of the blue, she got a call from an outfit she talked with last summer and they offered her a job doing what she used to do and with more money! Yay! She'll be starting that job in early February as she wanted to give the University adequate notice. I'm so happy and relieved for her. Today, I went to a birthday across the street for a 6 year old. Kids had a blast in a bouncy house. There was pizza as well as tri-tip, pasta salad, rolls and fruit and various drinks. I only stayed for less than two hours, mostly visiting with the grandparents who are my age. I left before there was cake but they brought a piece over for me. It was delicious.
Mary, be careful out there and Happy Anniversary! I wish I didn't know about your stray kitty out in the freezing cold. Now I'm going to worry about it. I don't know why it would eat birdseed unless it's really hungry. Dog's would eat birdseed but they'll eat anything.
Dianne, I'm sorry about Louis. Is he really so bad that he would need to be in hospice? I would image the repeated falls and repeated bouts of UTI have gotten him down, physically and emotionally. Big hugs to you, my friend.
Barb, I'm glad you had Tara's eye removed before it became even worse. It's good she is an indoor kitty. She will do fine with one eye. Living alone, I really need to be able to drive to get around. Fortunately, my issues with my eyeglasses has not interfered with my ability to drive in any way. I did discover that I still don't like driving on the freeway at night even after having cataract surgery. Part of that is just that I avoided doing it for so long because of the cataracts. I feel fine on the streets and coastal highway here because I'm so familiar with it.
everyone. Well, I took Tara to get her stitches out on Thursday and the good news is the stitches came out, she’s fine, however, the cone has to stay on for another week. Neither she nor I are happy about it, but the doctor just wants to make sure that she doesn’t scratch the wound and possibly open it.
JL, how nice that your daughter got offered that job. I’m sure she’s really happy about it too. Or she and her boyfriend getting really serious. , possibly thinking about getting married? How are your grandchildren doing?
Dianne, I’m so sorry Louis is not doing well. I hate the thought that they’re even talking about putting him in hospice care. The thing about that after having gone through this with my sister is they took get great care however, the main thing about Hospice is they first take them off of all of their medication except any pain meds that they may need. That was always interesting to me. They evaluated my sister every two months to see if she still needed that kind of care. You are probably very familiar with the program, since I think I remember you saying that you volunteered with a hospice program. My sister was put on hospice care in June and passed away on Nov. 5. She was 93 years old. Mary, Like JL, I am now concerned about that kitty. I would probably take it inside if it was in my yard because we have a lot of critters from the river that would harm it. None of my neighbors with cats let them go outside because of that. How is Jim doing? I still keep all of my owl buddies and their families in my prayers.
Hi glad to see everyone posting. Thanks all for your concern about Louis. I don’t think he’s ready for hospice unless he tells me he’s giving up and we have those conversations. He still has pt but only once a week and then he supposed to do exercises twice a day and ride his little pedal bike three times a week. He’s not consistent doing them. I get so tired of reminding him. I just told him your description of hospice and told him the ball is in his court. He just needs to get stable, stand straight and get so he can stand more than a minute Social worker called Friday to get the ball rolling. Primary called sat night to set up virtual with him Monday am. He finally is agreeing to going. If he wants to stay in house he needs to get better and that’s up to him. I’m glad he’s finally agreeing to go now I just hope ins approves him anyway, enough about my issues. JL. How fun u went to your daughters. It sounds like you’re doing a lot. I hope u get those glasses worked out I’m so glad she was offered a better job with more money. Very exciting. Yes, r they serious enough to maybe get married? I think your artist gatherings sound great. Plus it gets u out of the house I was asking if you have seen wicked? It disappeared when I wrote it. I’m going to hopefully post this and then start a new post
Ok thank goodness it posted. Barb, I’m sorry about the cone for another week but glad ur cat is better. I know…maybe u should wear one too and then she’d feel better. lol just an idea I’m surprised you remembered I volunteered with hospice…that was when I first retired at age 62 and now I’m 78..great memory. We r watching the game I am sort of. I wanted Washington win just for being the underdog. I’d like to see chiefs lose just because.. Barb, I was wondering how much u get out of house? I wish I could come pick u up for lunch. I was trying to think what to do for Super Bowl if Louis is in rehab. I could go to Tammy’s as she has a few over but it doesn’t start until 4:30 and that’s far to drive in the dark. I told Louis maybe I’d have a party and we laughed …first of all since dining room is gone we don’t have enough chairs. Second , all r football friends have died or too old to drive at night. I guess my party is me! Not too fun. Well, Mary missing u. Maybe we can all post more. It’s so nice to read everyone’s post. Our weather is supposed to be better starting Monday. It’s been snowing for five days lightly but enough to stay in and in the single digits. I need out. We have r neighborhood luncheon tmrw I take a few with me. It’s the last Monday of every month. Birthday people pick where we go. We usually have about 16 people. I’m trying to get to know more of my neighbors. Well, this game is a loss. Washington 23 and Eagles 48 three turnovers. Boring game. I had a shot in my shoulder and knee last week but not helping much. Anyway, that’s my couple of weeks life. Hope u all r going good. JL , your bed sounds nice. That was nice of your daughter to do that for you. Ok….im going sorry I’m so wordy. Love u all❤️
Hi there!Dianne LOL, at Barbs cone head!! I have trouble getting Jim to do anything. I hate nagging, but at times I think he is just a child! He feels tired and light headed and I ask if he has had any water. Nope, just coffee. The frig is always full of bottled water, juices and energy drinks with electrolytes. I usually take him a small glass of the Gater-aide. I wash, dry, fold and place his clothes on his desk in his bedroom and there they stay, won't make his own bed, and make his own sandwiches! I have what I call "strike days", when I don't make his breakfast, make his bed, or walk his dog etc. He actually survives these times lol! Today I did break down and made him a sandwich. Don't get me wrong, I totally sympathies with his copd. He suffers terribly from it. I watch him struggle to breath when bending over or walking, but when I see him wiping down his car from snow and heading to the casino or the VFW, ,,,, my patience takes a back seat! Dianne, light exercise & light stretches woudl be beneficial to you both. I stretch every day and some tai-chi. My hands are starting to stiffen up from arthritis, so I do a lot of hand exercises.
JL, & Barb. I can't bring the cat in because of Queenie. She already attacked it outside. She has been limping so I am sure it was injured. I have been putting out food for it. It has been sleeping in Queenie's pen, where there is straw/house, and heating lamp. I got a hold of animal control. They said they would take it if I captured it. They gave me the name of a young gal. She has set up two live traps. Queenie set one off, so we put one in the kennel. So far, no luck :(
Jl, I am glad your daughter has a new fella and you like him & his family. I am so glad you are active in your little community/neighborhood. I worry about you & JL being alone.
Barb, I forget, does your son live with you or just visits. I am so glad my son lives with us! This place would be a shambles. Jim is too cheap to hire much done. I kid him sometimes about "taking it with him when he dies". Last I said was, "just where do you want me to place all that money? at your feet or under the pillow of your head (in the coffin) LOL! I am so bad!
Time to check the live traps again. Have a great week my owletts!
Mary, my daughter has had that boyfriend for several years now. In fact, when she bought her house a few years ago, he helped her with a lot of the indoor painting and other stuff that she wanted done. Ever since she was a little kid she's been very clear that she never wanted to have kids so I don't think she ever thought of marriage as been a goal for her. She's very independent. She and her boyfriend don't live together but he spends the weekends with her. His parents live a couple of hours away outside of Portland. A few years ago, when his parents went to Europe, she and her dogs went to live at their house in order to take care of their dog while they were away.
Mary, yes my son lives with me. He moved back from Washington 6 years ago. It was originally going to be a temporary thing, but it soon became clear that I needed help doing things around the house and yard that we discussed making it permanent. It’s been working out pretty well. He was looking for a job, then my sister started having issues and was diagnosed with dementia. She lived alone and alone, and Never let anyone in her house. Then one day, Chad took something to her and got a glimpse of the inside when she opened the door a crack. He came home and told me about it and said we needed to do something to help her clean it up. That started the huge chore and he essentially became her caregiver, doing all her grocery shopping and taking her to doctor appointments, etc. She started having sundowners episodes and he would go calm her down. Sometimes that happened 3-4 times in one night. We along with her doctor, finally convinced her it wasn’t safe for her to live alone and we arranged for her to move to the board and care place. Also, I decided to quit driving and he is my chauffeur. So getting a job that could accommodate a flexible schedule seemed impossible, so he isn’t working.
Dianne, I’m so glad Louis is at the rehab place. I hope he does well and gets lots of PT. I took Tara’s cone off on Tuesday and she was so happy. She looked at me with that one eye and gave me a soft squeaky “meow.”
Dianne, I'm surprised Louis is home so quick! I hope there is improvement in his balance. How is the car problem coming?
SacBarb, I am so glad to hear that Chad is with you. Sons are the best! I would be lost without Matthew! He is a diabetic, but takes good care of himself. He has bone spurs in the back of his neck from being in Saudi in a trench for so long and sleeping on the airport runway by the oil fields. His legs are bad, but I have never heard him complain.
JustLin, I guess I forgot about your daughter's boyfriend. It's good that he is helping her. Being an independent gal is great!
Jim's sister-in-law passed away Thursday. She had been in the hospital since Christmas. She was being treated for cancer. It was between her esophagus and her stomach. She contracted a mild case of Covid, so they had to put off the cancer treatments. She couldn't eat or swallow. One of her sons ( my fave) passed away about a year ago, and the youngest son passed away in Dec. They will be a double ceremony. The have a daughter and one son left. The son is waaaaay bonkers! He had to be physically removed from his parents home by police a couple years ago. He was psychotic and threatening to his parents . He was a genius, but very delusional. If you want a taste of his personality, google "Bill Syrjala" and check out his FB page. Pretty most of what he says about his family is a lie. His parents (Jim's bro.) are loving & caring. I believe if you google "Richard Syrjala" from Boston you will see how bright he was. H was a self made hard working businessman. He is now alone in their big beautiful home. We have been there once. It is sad that Jim is unable to go to the funeral because of his copd.
