Burma Shave

by SacBarb

To My Old-As-Dirt Friends & Relatives who qualify as "old as dirt".

For those who never saw any of the Burma Shave signs, here is a quick lesson in our history of the 1930's and '40's.

Before there were interstates, when everyone drove the old 2 lane roads, Burma Shave signs would be posted all over the countryside in farmers' fields.  They were small red signs with white letters. Five signs, about 100 feet apart, each containing 1 line of a 4 line couplet......and the obligatory 5th sign advertising Burma Shave, a popular shaving cream.

Hello HOoters.

I hope everyone is having a good day.

Just_Lin said...

Barb Thanks for the blog today. I was just a tyke so probably saw these but wasn't really reading them.

I continue to have sneezing fits and scratchy throat. I need to get over this and be in tip top shape by Sunday. I stayed home today and even took a nap.

sacBarb said...

J/L, I hope you feel better for your cruise. Congratz on your Giants win!

Just_Lin said...

Barb So far, no sneezing today but still have a sore throat and swollen glands. I blame this all on being at Kaiser on Monday. Hey, there are sick people there! On that note, I did get bone density results and I do have some bone loss. My doctor emailed me to get 1200 mg of calcium a day, preferably by diet and only by supplement if needed. This is tricky as I'm supposed to limit dairy due to my borderline kidney issues and there's only so much broccoli I can eat in a day. On the bright side, my lab work looked good and my kidney values are improved.

sacBarb said...

J/L, I have the same issues you have with depleted bone density and the kidney issues. I have opted for taking supplements because, while I like broccoli, I don't eat it every day and like you, I can only eat so much. My doc told me if I take supplements, I should also take magnesium to help with the absorption of the calcium.

Just_Lin said...

Barb Fairly recently, I've been taking Vitamin D which is to help absorb calcium, also.

Waving a wing from bed!

Jodi said...

BARB - Cute blog, but alas I am only a child ;)

Jodi said...

SLIN - Better get more rest. That would be the pits to be cruising while sick. Say hi to Liz for me!!

Dianne/Denver said...

Hi...I remember as a child on vacations reading those signs all the time. I'm old. They were fun to read again...thanks Barb.

JL..Time to make our annual bet on the game Sunday. They say the tickets are the most expensive tickets this week. The game is here. Hope you feel better before Sunday and have fun on your cruise. Remember ...GO BRONCOS!!!!'

Jodi, are you all well now? Hope so...Little child. Are you working this weekend?

I take prescription VITD once a week..calcium every day as I don't get it in diet at all. Guess i should drink more kaluha and milk drinks.

Tomorrow we are once again going to football games in the morning ..two of them, late lunch with my brother and then over to Tammy's to take homecoming pictures of both girls. Busy day. I have hunk on Sunday my friend and I are going to see The Judge. Louis and I went to the cheap movie last night to see Into The Storm about a tornado. It is as kind of like Twister. It was actually a really good movie. We'd been wanting to see it for a long time

Mary..Hi...you must be busy. I see you sneaking around FB.

Barb, what are you up to this weekend? Been to any more movies?

We mailed our ballots today so maybe some of the phone calls will stop!

Not much else going on. Everyone have a good weekend.

Just_Lin said...

Dianne I mailed in my ballot today, too. I won't be watching any football Sunday as that is the day my daughter and I are flying down to Long Beach. I'm still sneezing and have a scratchy throat. I really want this to be gone.

Just_Lin said...

HOdi I'll say "hi" to Liz for you. At least I will try to remember to. My mind is like a sieve these days. Maybe it's the lack of calcium. LOL

Jodi said...

DIANNE - Yes to both! Feeling better and it's my weekend to work. Sam and Nate saw The Judge on Tuesday night, and she said it was really good!

Jodi said...

SLIN - Do I need to mail you cheese curds to help the cause? ;)

Dianne/Denver said...

Is Sam back with her boyfriend? I think his name was Nate?

Jodi said...

DIANNE - They just got back together this week. He has really turned around. Taking some classes and got a job at a bank. His diabetes is under better control, and he has even gained some weight. Things are looking up!

Dianne/Denver said...

Jodi, good I hope it works out for them are you good with it?

Dianne/Denver said...

Jodi, good I hope it works out for them are you good with it?

Jodi said...

DIANNE - I'm fine with it. He makes her happy! As long as he continues this positive path.

Mary/MI said...

Our roads never had these signs, but have seen them while traveling. I loved reading them.

jl, get better already!! I know you don't have time for that shit lol! I love cruisin'. Have fun!!

Barb, I have all kinds of vitamins. I keep forgetting to take them!

Dianne, yes I have been busy! I have been on the road a lot, visiting friend in Vet home, saying goodbye to snowbirds, weddings,VFW stuff, getting ready for my trip, yada yada yada! Tonight we are going to a Mex. dinner at our VFW.

I have been dealing with sinus stuff and a weird pain in the left side of my neck. I think it is some form of arthritis. It has hurt ever since my Chiro cracked my neck a few months ago. Motrin and "Biofreeze" lotion seem to help, just not for long!

Time to get ready . Have a great week end all!!!

Just_Lin said...

Mary Sounds like another trip to your chiro is warranted. Enjoy your dinner even though it won't be anywhere as good as what you make at home.

Just_Lin said...

HOdi Good for Nate! I hope he stays on the positive path regardless of if things work out for he and Sam or not. She must have scared him straight. LOL

Just_Lin said...

Dianne I won't be seeing the game but you know I will be rooting for the Niners in spirit.

Just_Lin said...

My printer bit the dust today.

sacBarb said...

Dianne, I am making cards with the Jennifers on Sunday. We hope to start our Christmas cards.

sacBarb said...

J/L, I hope you are well for your cruise.

Bummer about your printer.

sacBarb said...

Mary, I hope you will be able to relax on your trip to Spain. When do you leave?

Just_Lin said...

Barb I've still got the creeping crud. At least I don't feel bad.

I'm packed. Over-packed as usual. LOL

Jodi said...

MARY - Too bad you're not on Oahu. I bet Mr. Yee could fix you up!! Love BioFreeze. Paul and I both use it. How was your dinner?

Jodi said...

SLIN - Imagine that....you overpacking ;) Sorry about your printer. Have a great trip pretty lady ♥

Jodi said...

BARB - Can't wait to see what you come up with. Love your Christmas cards!

sacBarb said...

Jodi, We don't have a design yet. I'm lobbying for a more simple card with fewer elements. The past few years have had 12-16 elements and that is VERY labor intensive. But we'll see how the other two vote! ;)

Dianne/Denver said...

We did if!!!! Beat the 49ers by a lot and. Peyton broke Bretts record for touchdowns. It was quite a game and perfect weather. We already play again Thursday night. ..San Diego. Important game to win. Do...JL owes me a million dollars for our bet on the game. Wait until she comes home and finds out. Hee hee

Barb..I love your cards too. No pressure there. They are always so nice.

Jodi, glad Nate has turned things around. Hope it stays that way for her sake. It's so hard.

Mary, is it almost time fo you to go? I'm thinking you said November.

I have started my Christmas shopping and ordered and received my cards so I'm kind of ahead of things.

Well,I'm falling asleep. Went to see The Judge today. It was really good. I'd recommend it. Next Is Gone Girl.

Jodi said...

DIANNE - Good day for football....Packers and Broncos won!! (by a lot!!!) and congrats to Peyton Manning!

Jodi said...

BARB - Sometimes simple is the most beautiful! Hoping to get the kids together for a pic before Jake's surgery so I can get cards ordered. I have next weekend off, so hopefully we can do it then!

Jodi said...

Best get prettied up for work!!

Have a great day HOoters ♥

sacBarb said...

Dianne, I want to see the Judge. Saw Gone Girl last week and liked it a lot. I read the book and it stayed pretty true to the book. I hate when I see a movie after reading the book and they make big changes in the story line or characters.

sacBarb said...

Jodi, well, we have a design and it is very different than anything we have done before. We got all the elements cut out yesterday. Now we just have to put them all together.

Jodi said...

BARB -I'm sure it will be stunning!

Jodi said...

Just waiting for Alex (my old boss) and Dustin to pick me up. We're going to go watch bowling and have a few beers!! I had to work this weekend, so couldn't go out for Dustin's birthday. Cheers!!!

Mary/MI said...

JL, you were right. The dinner was nothing like mine. I hated the rice! She through in everything in but the kitchen sink! Her oven baked enchiladas were soggy/mushy! The tacos were ok, you can't hurt them much lol!

Barb and Hodi, I leave on voting day. We don't fly out until 2pm, so I should get my votes in before I go.

Barb, don't forget me ! I hope I am on your card list :)
I wish I was talented enough to make cards. I can barely "make it" to the store lol!

Dianne, yay for the Broncs!
I can barley keep up with Birthday, wedding Anniv.sympathy, and new baby cards and gifts, to even think of Christmas lol!! You go girl!!

Jodi said...

What is this having to prove I'm not a robot?!!? TINA?

Jodi said...

Back to work for me today. I had a fun day off yesterday. Breakfast with Sam and lunch with a friend before her and her hubby head back to Arizona for the winter.

Have a great day HOoters ♥

Jodi said...

Pretty quiet in here. What are you all doing this week?

Dianne/Denver said...

Yea Broncos. We beat San Diego tonight!!! We are 6-1 but are next three games are on the road.

I'm not doing much. My usual lunches took Tammy to lunch today. Her birthday is tomorrow and she is busy every night. We will go to dinner next week and washed my grey away today. Tomorrow meeting a friend for Chinese lunch and have a dr appt Louis is going to my older grandsons game but I wont be able to go. On Saturday we will go to the two other boys games.

My friend is turning 60 and having a little gathering at the casino Sunday for brunch and gambling so going to that for the afternoon. Those are my plans. How about you?

JL should be coming home pretty soon. Hope she started feeling better on her cruise.

Barb, are you busy working on your cards? What are you doing for your Birthday?

Well, that's about it. Our weather has been in the 80's and beautiful every day. Record highs for October...love it!!!

Mary/MI said...

Yay Dianne!! :)
Sorry Barb :(

I have been hunkard down since my walking the dog the other day. My sinuses flared up big time! The winds were blowing all sorts of farmer's plowing crap, neighbor spraying on his tree farm (evergreens)and of course all the leaves coming down.
Tomorrow I get my nails did, and next week I get my roots done did lol!!
Dianne, I think our roots are on the same growth rate lol!!

Jodi said...

DIANNE - Congrats on the win!! Going to be near 70 this weekend! Hoping to take a drive to look at the fall colors. We are at peak here!

Jodi said...

MARY - Hope you feel better before you take off! What color did you get your "nails did"?

sacBarb said...

Dianne, I've done some work on my cards, but I've been pretty busy this week. Yesterday I took lunch to a former employee who just had back surgery. She was only in the hospital for four days. They sure don't keep people in the hospital for very long these days.

Today I went to lunch with one of the Ya Ya's (high school mate)to celebrate my birthday. I don't know what the family is doing yet. We are waiting to find out when Dean's knee replacement surgery will be scheduled.

sacBarb said...

J/L, I hope you felt better on your cruise so you could enjoy it.

sacBarb said...

Mary, Gettin' all spruced up! ;)

sacBarb said...

Jodi, I love to drive in the country to see the fall colors. Loved the beautiful pic of the tree you posted on FB.

Jodi said...

BARB - Thank you! This is my favorite time of year. The colors are gorgeous right now! I only wish I had my camera back. I had taken it in to The Camera Company in Madison in July. They sent it in to Olympus under warranty, and I still don't have it back. Ugh!! Have a good weekend lady!

Dianne/Denver said...

Boy Jodi, doesn't that seem like a long time for the camera place to still be working on your camera? It does to me...four months!!

Our colors have peaked here but are still very pretty. Hope you get that drive in, Jodi. You have the weekend off, right?

Barb, so your son has to get a knee replaced..yuck. I'm glad those days are over although as we know, he will feel so much better.

Mary, don't get sick!!! You gals can't be sick before your trips. Go get drugs...fast!!

Just_Lin said...

Hi, HOoters! I'm b-a-a-a-ck!

I had a very nice t8me with my daughter and my cold didn't spoil anything. I have a lingering cough but no big deal.

We had fun on Catalina Island. We spent a couple hours with a potter and we each made three tiles which she will now fire for us and ship to us. It was a cool, fun way to spend some time. We also tootled around on the island in a rented gold cart. It was fun and funny. I felt like I was on Mr. Toad's Wild Ride at Disneyland.

We also went to Ensenada and I will say that one trip there is enough. My daughter and I did both purchase rings there, however. I also bought my daughter a very pretty Swovorski (sp?) crystal bracelet as her birthday present which is coming up on Nov. 1.

Otherwise, the big events were losing money in the ship casino and choosing what courses to have at our meals.

Just_Lin said...

Dianne Don't you realize that if I'm not watching the game then it doesn't count?

Just_Lin said...

HOdi That's the trouble with warranties; they take their sweet time getting around to fulfilling their obligation. Is there a number you can call to check on it?

Just_Lin said...

Mary I do absentee ballots and got mine mailed in before my trip. It makes life easier.

Just_Lin said...

Barb Your cards are always great. I can hardly wait to see what design you settled on this time.

Dianne/Denver said...

Oh no you don't jl..that's not the football rule. Get that check In the mail. We whopped you big time!!

Glad you had fun and your cold wasnt an issue. I love buying jewlery. Your trip sounds like my kind of trip. I've been to Catalina and loved it quite some time ago. Ok...time for you to go to the post office...times a wasting.

I do mail in ballots too. It's so much easier. They say if you get them in quick your phone calls will slow down.

Jodi said...

DIANNE - Yes, it's my weekend off. I'm getting my hair cut this morning at 8:30, then I am picking up and delivering Angie's Dads birthday gift. Angie is my friend that lives in Kauai. Her Dad lives in Oregon, and I'm only too happy to help her. I'm thinking after that I will take that drive.

Jodi said...

SLIN - Welcome back! Sounds like you and Liz had a fun trip. Can't wait to see the tiles you created! I think I will make a call to the place ai dropped my camera off at. Part of the reason it took so long is their fault. They didn't send it in until almost 2 months after I dropped it off. And that was because I called. Not happy!

Just_Lin said...

We finally got some decent rain during the night. Maybe that will bring our Giants good luck later today.

sacBarb said...

Dianne, I got my ballot in early and I still get many political phone calls each day. I got one the other day asking if I was a registered voter. When I said yes, the woman asked if I registered as a Democrat, Republican, or Independent and I said "yes, (pause) one of those. Then she said "thanks" and hung up. It made me laugh. I guess she figured out that she wouldn't get a straight answer from me and gave up.

sacBarb said...

J/L, Welcome home! Glad your cold didn't slow you down. We had a little rain last night, but not nearly enough.

sacBarb said...

Jodi, How sweet of you to deliver your friend's gift to her Dad.

Jodi said...

SLIN - Glad you got some rain! Go Giants!

Jodi said...

BARB - I haven't gotten any of those pesky calls. Now emails on the other hand....OY!!

Jodi said...

Paul called earlier and asked if I was up to a date night. I so am!! Not sure what we will be doing. Maybe he will be up to finally going dancing! *fingers crossed*

sacBarb said...

Jodi, your date night comment was #69 - fitting!

sacBarb said...

I'm having a lazy day. The weather is beautiful and I should be outside enjoying it, but no, I'm just veggin' inside!

Jodi said...

BARB - I didn't even notice...and yes it was ;) We didn't end up going dancing. The place we would've gone didn't have a decent country band playing. We did go to our fav diner and had prime rib! It was so good! We took advantage of an empty house and had some "alone time"!

Jodi said...

I did take a drive today. After dropping Sam off at work, I headed to Waukesha. Paul's insurance is having screenings (fasting test for lipids and sugar) and we will save $600 next year. This means we won't have to pay a deductible. This is huge for us. After work tomorrow, I have to stop at his dr's office and have them fill in the results of his latest test. Being a type 1 diabetic, he has both of these done twice a year.

Jodi said...

I looked forward to our weather for the week. Continued gorgeous fall weather til Tuesday (high of 70°), but by the end of the week, the predicted high is only going to be 42°. About Wednesday I will have to dig out the flannel sheets!

Have my coffee ready for the morning and our chili dip ready for the game tonight. GO PACKERS!

Just_Lin said...

Barb I'm not sure if I get those calls or not since I don't answer the phone unless it's someone I recognize. I am getting tons of emails, however.

Just_Lin said...

HOdi Woo hoo for "alone time". I'm glad you two are keeping the romance alive. Love me a good prime rib dinner!

Just_Lin said...

I drove over to the East Bay today to meet my daughter and retrieve my dog who was staying at her house with her boyfriend while we were gone. I met her at a dog park. I guess my dog and her's had a very active time there because my dog has been exhausted all day.

Jodi said...

SLIN - Working really hard at keeping it alive. The kids are all so busy that I've found we really need to reconnect again. But he is still the one that gives me butterflies, so it's totally worth the effort!

Mary/MI said...

Hi all! I just got up from a nap. I rarely take them, but Zoie and I were exhausted! Jim had a very active "talking in his sleep last night! He seems to be talking to his old buddy Bruce a lot. Bruce has been gone over 3 yrs. They sure have colorful language too lol! The worst is when his arms and legs start flailing around wildly! Zoie and I cling to our edge of the bed lol! He finally settled down about 4:00 am. All this seems to run in his family. I need to set up the twin bed I bought the summer. I just need to clean out the spare room. It seems to be a "catch all!"

My Niece Jaimie slipped on a wet pier off Lake Michigan while helping a friend take professional pics. She is doing a lot of interning in that field and doing some weddings for extra money.
I saw the ex-ray of her foot. nasty! I have not heard from anyone since her surgery this afternoon. She doesn't own a car. She walks or bikes to work in Grand Rapids. I worry about her because of her mugging a few years ago.Now she will be needing transportation to work. Oye Vey!

My neighbor Jim is doing very well considering all he has been through! I visited him Saturday . It was odd seeing him with just a stump where is leg was. I know he couldn't help it, but her kept moving it and massaging it. A little unnerving trying not to stare. He had a visit from a man who has had both legs removed and wearing prosthesis. It seemed to have lifted his spirits to hear what this young man has gone through! He will eventually have to have the other leg removed (just above the knee). He is still in danger of getting infection.
Kind of makes me appreciate my legs, pain and all!

Jim and I did DJ and Karaoke at the American Legion Sat night. It was a lot of fun even with a couple of drunk gals. I swear women are the worst lol!
I get my roots done tomorrow, go to the Credit union to get a separate Visa debit card to take on my trip, and do a little shopping. The rest of the week is mostly packing, cleaning and cooking up some prepared meals for these helpless men lol!
Well, I am tired just reading my post! Time to relax on my FB farm :)

sacBarb said...

Mary, I got tired reading your post, too. You are such a busy bee. I bet if you didn't do all that cooking of prepared meals for those guys, they would find some way to subsist. I'm sure they wouldn't starve! They are just spoiled! ;)

sacBarb said...

J/L, I usually don't answer the phone if I don't recognize the number, but sometimes it's very close to a number I think I recognize, or it has an area code from San Diego or Seattle and I think it might be one of my kids using another phone. I have stopped doing that and now I wait for the answering machine to come on. If it's someone I know, I answer, but if it's one of 'those' calls, they usually don't leave a message. It took me a while to learn that!

sacBarb said...

Jodi, Things do change when you become empty nesters or at least when the kids get old enough to not be home much. I remember asking my Hubby what we were gonna do when the kids were all gone and he said, "walk around nekkid and have sex where ever we want!" Unfortunately, we never found out what that would have been like.

Jodi said...

MARY - I hope your niece's recovery goes well. How exciting to be going on a trip! Paul finally agreed to go to Kauai to Angie's wedding next August. He thinks we are just going for a "long weekend"....snort. Well, he can fly home Sunday night, but I am heading to Oahu for a few more days! I told Sam to save her pennies and meet me there for her 21st birthday!

Jodi said...

BARB - Tomorrow is never promised. This is why I'm making the best of the time we have!! Oh, and HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! Do you have anything fun planned?

sacBarb said...

Jodi, You are so right about tomorrow not being promised. We have to make the most of today!

Thanks. Going to celebrate with the family on Friday night with dinner at Maggiano's. We finally got one in Sac and it just opened in September. I've been to one in North Carolina when I was visiting a cousin a few years ago and the food was delish, so we're going to try it.

Dianne/Denver said...

Happy Birthday, Barb. Thinking about you today and wishing we could go to lunch to celebrate. Hey, I'd even buy!!! We are going to Maggianos next week for days too. I haven't been there in a long time. We have two of them here.

Jodi, I'm surprised Paul is going to Hawaii with you but so glad. It can be like a little honeymoon. Sounds like you had a fun date night. I remember those kind of...

Mary, I hope your niece gets wel soon. We always have someone to worry about, don't we? No wonder we have grey hair. Looks like you have your time mapped out for you before you leave. I think Louis would like to be married to you..all that cooking you do even when you're gone. Matter of fact----I think I'd like to be married to you.

JL, how did your shoulder hold up on the cruise? It wasn't your slot ma home shoulder was it? Oh and btw, the check has not arrived yet. You may want to check on that mail situation

Went gambling Sunday with a group for my friends bday. I did pretty good and lost a dollar by the end. It was a fun afternoon.

Tonight we are taking my daughter to dinner for her birthday. She finally has a free night to fit us in as she's bern quite busy now that her creepy boyfriend is gone.thank goodness and happier too. She's been celebrating her bday for a week. She takes after her mom.

That's about it from Bronco country (Denver) have a good day.

Mary/MI said...

Dianne, You made me lol!!
Looks like you are a busy gal too!

Barb, I too wish we could get together on your B-Day! I would even put up a good fight over the tab lol!!

Jodi, you still need to go dancing! Don't make me come over there lol!

Barb ib WA/CO, Your house looks wonderful! Really cozy looking!

JL, any pics of your trip? What didn't you like about Ensenada? I have never been there.

sacBarb said...

Hellooooo. Where is everyone? Too busy getting ready for Halloween? I haven't had trick or treaters for the last 5 years, so I didn't buy any candy. I won't be home this year anyway. My family has decided to celebrate my birthday that night, so I'll be eating dinner at Maggiano's.

I hope you are all OK.

Mary/MI said...

All is well here Barb. I have been busy getting ready for my trip and visiting peeps before I go.
I visited my Niece Jaimie today. Except for the pain, she seems to be doing well. She will have the rod holding her broken bones in place removed soon, but the screws will be staying. I asked if I could bring her anything. She asked for incense and herbal tea. Not a simple task her in the boonies lol! I did find them in Grand Rapids at the International Market, about 8 miles from where she is staying (with her Mom). She is a Vegan. I hope my Sister can handle that lol!

Tomorrow is more running around. Have a great week end all!!!

Just_Lin said...

Hello, HOoters! Sorry I've been MIA but I've been pretty sick since Sunday afternoon and literally needed to visit the bathroom every 10 minutes or so. By Day 4, I was concerned enough to call the doctor. Mine is out of town but the one who responded asked for a stool sample. My friend, Jane, took it in for me since I couldn't. Now THAT'S a good friend. I was also advised to take Imodium and that has been a lifesaver. I actually feel like a human being today went out and picked up my mail that was held while I was away and did some grocery shopping.
