The Mechanic

by Dianne

A gynecologist had become fed up with malpractice insurance and HMO paperwork, and was burned out. Hoping to try another career where skillful hands would be beneficial, he decided to become a mechanic.
He went to the local technical college, and then signed up for evening classes, attended diligently, and learned all he could.
When the time of the final exam approached, the gynecologist prepared carefully for weeks, and completed the exam with tremendous skill. When the results came back, he was surprised to find that he had obtained a score of 150%.
Fearing an error, he called the instructor, saying, “I don’t want to appear ungrateful for such an outstanding result, but I wonder if there is an error in the grade?”
The instructor said, “During the exam, you took the engine apart perfectly, which was worth 50% of the total mark. You put the engine back together again perfectly, which is also worth 50% of the mark.”
After a pause, the instructor added, “I gave you an extra 50% because you did it all through the muffler, which I’ve never seen done in my entire career.”

Ok ok.....here I am. I don’t know what happened to me as I’m certainly not busy. Guess what? I didn’t make brownies and probably am not going to make any. JL, yes I truly have daily cabin fever. I’m listening to our governor today about when things will begin to very slowly begin to open. Hair salons on May 4 maybe but only a couple in at a time and everyone in masks. I will totally contemplate it. Temp taken,,etc. yes, we have a tiny patio that I’ve never been on in 17 years. We have a tiny porch but not much. My sciatic/back is killing me. The gab med is not helping me. I have a virtual appt with dr tmrw. I had one with my Dermo today and it went really good.

We took another 45 min drive to my favorite Mexican pLace and picked up for food for Tam and James too is n Saturday. We went by her place and left the food on her driveway and then talked for about 15 min. We did the same thing last week. It gets us out anyway. Yesterday I did a Catherines online order and used $100;in gift cards. It didn’t show it in my email so I called. I waited online for two hours. The guy didn’t understand me and then he asked if I had a son or daughter that could explain it to me! I was going to hang up but didn’t want to wait another two hours! Pissed me off big time. Today I had to call the bank and was on hold for an hour since no one has a full staff. Their music is terrible.

Barb, i wonder why they are out of butter? I noticed our store was low a few weeks ago too. I ordered my groceries and picked up on Friday. They gave me an extra dozen eggs and I barely use them. It was fun having our three way face time call the other day. JL, I’m going to figure out zoom so all four of us can talk....unless one of you want to figure it out....that would be great.

Mary, how’s your doggie? What did the vet say? Will you go,to beauty shop when it opens under restriction if that’s how your state will,do it?
I’m ordering pizza for dinner tonight. If you buy one you get the second one for $4.20 for the day so I’ll be ordering.

My son is working off duty a day or so a week at the homeless shelter. They’ve moved them to our coliseum. One for 700 men and one for women. The women one is just opening today. Police dept have them full coverage on their faces and gloves.

Well I have to order my pizzas now. See ya’ all later.

Dianne, I was puzzled about the butter, too. I used to use margarine all the time, now I hate it. He hasn’t been back To the store since. He did go to the liquor store close to our house, to get diet soda. The had two liter bottles $,99 each and he drinks a lot of it, so he stocked up. He may go for a few groceries this week. We’re out of milk for his cereal.

It was really nice talking to you and Mary, even though none of us are doing anything to talk about. LOL. I’m sorry, I am not good at computer stuff. I would never be able to figure out Zoom. I did hear that it wasn’t safe from hackers, though.

J/L, Are you feeling better about the Listen to your Heart show? I’m still not sure about it. I can’t seem to remember names of the players. The format is just like Paradise, but for some reason I am not as into it. Maybe because the cast are all strangers and with Paradise, we already knew them.
Chad cooked a turkey today. We will be eating it for a few days. He rubbed the whole outside with sal, pepper, granulated garlic and onion, and herbs. It was very good.

Mary, How’s Zoie? I hope she is better. I hope your pain i going away. I hate that the older I get the more aches and pains I get.

Barb, I think zoom is ok now. All my drs and weight watchers are using it. I’ll see If I can get someone to teach me. I had two dr appts yesterday and today. My pain dr is having me take one more gabapentin at night and trazidom as needed during the day. He mentioned injections again rather than surgery. I don’t think I’m doing either. I’ve had injections three times and didn’t work. Unless he has something else in mind I’m not doing it again. I don’t plan on surgery any time soon but the pain is really bad. Your turkey sounds wonderful. We’ve had pizza the last two nights.

I got another Hawaii bag emptied today and a couple of other things. It’s kind of like Christmas opening these bags. I’d forgotten what I had bought. I wonder if I’ll ever get out again to wear any of this jewelry? Depressing. Our city is opening up some starting Friday. No restaurants or anything like that But beauty salons barbers, etc. My salon sent out an email tonight that they weren’t sure when they’d open but it was going to take awhile to get in as they are only having a couple in at a time and you sit in your car until the operator comes to get you. I’m not sure when I’ll go back. My high lites are kind of covering my grey right now for a couple of more weeks. I like my hair a little longer. I always tell her to leave it longer and she doesn’t so at least I like that part. Tammy cut James’s hair Over the weekend. He ended up with a buzz cut. He looks really different but he seemed ok with it when he was on fb. No cutting going on here!

Good morning. JL, how was early grocery shopping? Did you get everything? I’m up very early this am....:5:20...just woke up and started doing some things around here. I’m getting my afternoon chores done early. It will give me time for my nap. I had a donut for breakfast. Louis is cooking dinner and cleaning up tonight for admin day. I do all the admin around here so..... last year he got me flowers but I already got some last week from store so fixing dinner and cleaning up is good enough. I run a tight bargain around here! Lol. Luckily he’s a good sport about it. My cousin and a friend do it too...I’m sure their husbands love me!

Well I just wanted to say good morning to you all

SacBarb, Zoie is a lot better. It must have been a light sprain. She wont go up her stairs in the bedroom anymore. She bark/cries when she wants up./ I ordered a small ramp with a little landing on top. The height is close to my bed height. I have used an outdoor plastic ramp, but she would always use the stairs. I put it back up a few days ago and have been training her to use it. She is not too thrilled about it. I need to break her in before the new ramp comes in. With all the delivery issues, I don't expect it for a couple of weeks. Even her food was late. I had one day supply left when it finally arrived!

Dianne. I have been spraying some temp. dye/spray I had bought a long time ago for touch-ups. My dark hair and white roots really look ghastly!!.
I would be shocked if Jim ever cooked lol! Oh well, at least he buys pizza once a week!
your souvenir unpacking sounds fun!

Waving at Justlin!
I wonder what's up with Seaside? Every once in a while she sends me a sweet gift. I sent her some Mrs Field's cookies last week and she let me know on FB that she got them.
I remember a long time ago she disappeared for a while. I sure hope she's ok!
I would send her a letter, but I don't have her address for a while. Matthew rebuilt my computer. For some reason my on line Dymo address book didn't transfer. All of my addys are in there :( Matt will be working on that soon.

Mary, I am glad Zoie is doing better. My cats turned 5 years old this month, April 11 and 15. I wished them a happy birthday, but they didn’t seem to care.
I actually lost ALL my contacts on my phone once when I got a new one and I was devastated! I had to recreate the whole thing and it took forever. I was still working, so I had to do it in my spare time. There were quite a few that I didn’t have anywhere else and I didn’t remember until I went to call and it wasn’t there. So, I still keep an address book just in case it happens again. Nothing beats the old paper and pencil!

sacBarb said...

Dianne, LOL at you celebrating admin day. Is that the name for what used to be Secretary’s day? I remember it was in April. You are so lucky that Louis pampers you. I’m sure you reciprocate, too.
So nothing is going on here. I could use all this time to make cards or do some scrapbooking, but I am just not inspired. I love doing it with the Jennifers, and it just isn’t as much fun alone! I have a spare bedroom that could use organizing, but my energy level isn’t high enough to tackle that! So, I am keeping the kitchen and bathrooms clean and doing a little laundry here and there, and that’s about it!

J/L, How are things in the Bay Area? It’s warming up here. Our temps will be in the 80s this week. All the bulbs that Chad planted in February are coming up and some have blooms. He planted mostly lilies and I love seeing them. It doesn’t take much to get us excited! LOL Other than that, it’s been pretty boring around here!
I talked to Lynn last week and she was driving to her Aunt’s after shopping at Costco. She got some stuff for her Aunt and she was going to leave it at her door. Most of our conversation consisted of talking about people not wearing masks and not respecting social distancing. She wasn’t happy about some Costco shoppers getting too close. She seems to be doing OK, though still grieving.

Barb Yesterday was gorgeous here but now it is overcast and cool. This is life on the coast. Yesterday was fun as my neighbor across the street brought her little kids over to play in the sunshine (I'm on the sunnier side of the street). I stayed on the porch while little Autumn (4 1/2 yrs old) rolled a large yoga ball down my driveway and ran after it until it bounced off my garage door. This was absolutely hysterical to her brother, Jake, who is 15 months old. He still doesn't have walking completely under control and doesn't realize he can't run downhill without catastrophe so his poor mother spent the whole time bent over holding on to his hand as he tried to chase the ball with his sister. He just thought this whole thing was hysterical and his laughter made us laugh, too. They did this for quite a while and I found it very entertaining. It's been a while since I laughed that hard or that much. It was really the highlight of the day.

Kudos to Lynn for helping out her aunt. I don't do Costco and I can't even imagine dealing with all those people at this time. It's all I can do to be at Safeway when they open at 6 on senior days. At least there's only 20 people in there at a time. Everyone was wearing a mask and were good about the distancing. While waiting in line for the store to open, an employee came out and announced that as of yesterday morning, no one would be allowed in without a covering of the nose and mouth and if they removed it when in the store, they would be escorted out.

Mary Is Zoie on any arthritis drugs? My dog is and I get them refilled through an online vet pharmacy that my vet hospital has a relationship with. I just ordered a refill, as a matter of fact.

I'm not "friends" with Seaside and don't have a relationship with her from the Ross Blog days. I think she went to the first blog get-together but I wasn't there for that one. I do remember I used to be Just Lin until FB made me use a real name. I don't recall what I had to do to prove what my real name was. Maybe I sent pics of a couple of bills to show name of addressee to prove what my real name is. I was annoyed to have to use my real name, though.

I did a weird thing yesterday. I was baking banana-nut bread and when the timer buzzed, I opened oven door to see that it was hardly baked at all and the oven was actually off already. I don't know how I did it, but apparently I accidentally turned the oven off when I set the timer so the oven slowly got cooler and cooler. It was a little bit cooked so I turned the oven back on and set it for another half an hour. It looks great and I expect toi try it in a few minutes.

Dianne I got a call from my doctor's nurse this morning to tell me she wants to do a video appointment with me. We have it set up for late morning tomorrow. I see that I got an email now that gives me instructions to download the app for it. This ought to be interesting. I don't know if it is Zoom or not but I will let you know. My phone is set to have the screen go dark after a relatively short time in order to save battery energy. I guess I better reset that. LOL

I hope the extra dose of your meds is helping the pain. I always have extra trouble with my back the day after I've vacuumed. One more reason not to do housework. LOL

I don't get how beauty salons and barbers can do their jobs safely. If I were to go get my hair cut only, maybe with both of us wearing masks, that might work but we wouldn't be 6 feet apart. I can't see being able to wear my mask while getting my hair dyed and washed. That just wouldn't work and it would screw up my mask.

Mary2 After thinking about it, I think the first blog get-together was the one in Chicago and I was there for that. It was the first West Coast one that I did not attend but I believe Seaside did.

Just_Lin said...

Dianne2 Well, I'm not having a video appointment with my doctor after all. My computer does not have a camera and my Motorola Android phone is not compatible with the Kaiser online video app. I don't have any issues to talk about so we aren't even going to do a phone call.

Dianne said...

JL, then I don’t think zoom would work if you don’t have a camera. You don’t have an iPad, right? I don’t have a computer. I do everything on the iPad. I guess I won’t worry about learning zoom if you can’t do it. That will save me some grief as I tried to learn from my cousin for about two hours Friday afternoon. We were struggling to figure it out. Today we’re trying to figure out why Netflix gets so loud during boom things in movies. It about blows the roof off the house and then when louis turns it down he can’t her the talking. Anyone else have this issue? Randy was trying to figure it out for us tonight but he couldn’t either. Frustrating. I never thought about how our hair can be colored with mask on but they were very explicit about it. I’ll have to just see what happens. I’m more concerned about my nails that are about to fall off.

Barb, yes Admin day is the old Secretary’s Day. Heck, I do all the admin things around here. I feel like I have a job sometimes. I keep an address book too..just in case. I need to do my May cards tmrw. I’ll start forgetting peoples special day if I don’t do the month ahead. I finally finished all my Hawaii bags today and I’m missing a bag with a watch in it. I don’t know how I could be missing it as there’s no room around here to misplace a Hawaii bag.

Mary, well get this...Louis told me not to cook so much as he like a ham sandwich or cheese and crackers here and there. Never thought I’d hear that request. Maybe my cooking is gross! He’d never tell me plus I’m my own critic. How’s little Zoie doing with her new ramp,,,did you get it yet? I think I want a Alexa. I have a Siri but she only will play music that’s download but not like a radio station, etc. does yours do,that? They always say it on the radio just to ask Alexa for a certain radio station.

I’m missing my Texas Tenors. They send things to listen to over fb but I want to see them. It makes me so sad for them. Our plans were to go to Salina, Ks., in mid-September to see them but I think that will cancel. We were going to Boise, Idaho, in july for a family reunion but I think we will cancel. Looks like a boring summer and still scary. I wonder if we will ever get back to normal. I read tonight that Disneyland will probably not open til 2021. Wow! Well, guess it’s time to get ready for bed ... No,cooking as Louis has a sonic sandwich for Sunday night. I’ll have a skimpy Lean Cuisine. Night all....

Dianne said...

Ok guys....I was just telling Louis about you not having a camera JL but he said I could still do zoom and we’d hear your voice. I guess I might see if I’m a find an easy way to learn it. Louis’s daughter told me it was really easy and she could show me. Ok, just wanted to give tech update Night again

Just_Lin said...

Dianne My little Motorola Razor Android phone has a camera. I just don't know if it would be compatible with Zoom. I should get an updated phone but I don't want to have the extra monthly expense. Mostly I'm very happy with this one and it was paid off long ago.

Dianne said...

We can try it when I learn it. It’s on my to do list this week.

Mary/MI said...

Can you all either pm on FB or send text with your addresses? I am re doing my on line address book.

JustLin, I have only met Seaside once, if I remember correctly. She was very sweet.
Zoie was doing ok for a while. now she seems to be having issues with both front legs. Not big time time limping, just kind of a slower trot. I have her on oc Casaquin. I was hoping I would see some improvement by now. When I get a chance, I rub her front legs to see if I get any reaction from her pain-wise. She doesn't flinch at all. I am thinking it could be arthritis in her shoulder area. I will see if I can get the Vet to see her. They may only be taking emergencies.
Oh, btw, I have done the "oven" thing a few times lol!

SacBarb, I understand "not having ambition/motivation ". I go in spurts. I really don't have much choice with two guys and a needy dog lol! Today I had a "spurt" I washed all the bedding, swept and moped all floors, cooked a pot roast with all the veggies ,walked Zoie a tiny bit, and exercised on my recumbent bike. I may not move tomorrow lol!

Well, Talk about absentmindedness lol! I wrote Dianne's name and skipped right to SacBarb lol!!
Dianne, I loved this blog. funny
The ramp has not come. She is doing ok on the outside ramp. I have been using the "treat" method. She still prefers to go down the stairs!
I didn't know if I would like Alexa when Matthew got it for me. I love her! You do have to have Amazon Prime to get a lot of their music. You can also pair xm radio if you have it. You can ask for specific radio stations. In the morning I ask her to play "easy country". I bet I can get the Texas Tenors if they have music on Amazon. I love Arron Nevil's "Ave Maria". Good sound to wake up to. I asked Alexa to play "one hit wonders" and the first song to come up was "My Maria" I love that song lol!
I am getting to hate cooking! I miss Jim going to the Casino and buying a meal there.

JL, Seaside did go to the first BABB that Rob had at his house in Mountain View. She also co-hosted the next one which was at Judy Greenwood’s house in Brentwood. Mary, you were there with Raquel and stayed at the same hotel as Sharon and I. I had the one after that and it was a real bust. Only Rob, Judy, Lynn, and Sharon were there. JL, you were having some dental surgery the day before, so you couldn’t be there. I was so disappointed that more people didn’t make it. I think the one in Chicago was about 1 1/2 years after mine, ( mine was in Sept. and Chicago was in May) when you and I missed our flight!

How nice that you were able to interact with your neighbor and her kids and still maintain social distancing. I love watching kids play.

sacBarb said...

Dianne, Don’t even question why Louis said you don’t have to cook much! Just take it as a gift. Chad bought some London broil last time he went to Costco so I could make stew. I finally started making it yesterday and as I was frying the cut up meat, he came into the kitchen and ended up helping me. I had about 5 lbs. of meat and had two fry pans going. I plan to freeze half of it for another time because it’s so time intensive to make. It went much quicker with both of us doing it. Then it went into the crock pot. It was delish and we ate it today, too. Chad got a big loaf of sourdough bread from Boudin’s and made cheesy garlic bread. It was yummy.

sacBarb said...

Mary, I swept my kitchen floor yesterday, because I spilled flour all over when I was making the stew. After I tossed the meat in the seasoned flour, I was putting the pieces in the fry pan and I hit the handle of the pan and flour went everywhere! I should have mopped it, too, but my energy was all spent on making the stew. It seemed much easier when I was younger. I only put carrots, onions, and potatoes in with the meat, but all that washing, cutting and frying wore me out. I’ll mop it tomorrow! 😸
Does Jim play any casino games on the computer? I know it’s not the same as being there, but a friend’s husband plays on his computer and it keeps him busy. She has to watch that he doesn’t spend too much money, though.

Just_Lin said...

Barb I still don't know how we managed to miss that flight when we were waiting so long right across from the boarding gate. It takes a special talent, I guess. LOL I guess I was thinking that the Chicago meet was the first one because we all made a big deal out of how one of us could be an ax murderer. Turns out it was Bebbi. LOL I'm sorry I missed the one at your house. I forgot about the fact that I had a whole bunch of teeth pulled out at that time. You have a very good memory.

So, I had my leftover beef stew for dinner. I thought it weird that I was making stew on a warm, summery day. I guess we both thought of it at the same time. It's certainly not the kind of meal that usually comes to mind on a warm, sunny day but it is comfort food and I guess I'm looking for comfort wherever I can get it.

Just_Lin said...

Mary All the meals that you cook seem to be big deals. No wonder you are getting tired of it. Do you ever just do soup and sandwiches? Jim must be really missing his casino time and it sounds like you are missing him being at the casino, too. LOL

It sounds like you've been working a lot. I did do laundry and unclog a slow bathtub drain. Oh, I mopped the bathroom floor and swept the kitchen floor. Other than some playing with the dog, not much going on here. My back was really bothering me the other day. The muscles in my upper left arm/shoulder area are still hurt. I need to remember to just not do anything with my left arm. I should put it in a sling to force myself to comply with my own advice. LOL How is your shoulder?

Just_Lin said...

Dianne Thinking about how to get hair dyed while wearing a mask....Maybe if the hairdresser provided disposable masks that might work. I wouldn't want to get dye on my cute personal mask. My hair length is getting really annoying now and bushy above the back of my neck. It's getting more and more difficult to hide the white hair, especially in back.

I had an outing today as I had to put a couple of things in the mail. After I did that, I went to the local drug store, primarily to get foundation make-up but to make things look more legit, I also got some Salonpas patches for my lower back. Sometimes they seem to help a bit. My next outing will be Wednesday morning as I made an appointment to get my car's smog check so I can get my registration renewed by 5/18. I may do the early morning grocery shopping again on Thursday. This is now the extent of my social life. It beats being on a ventilator so I am thankful to be able to do it.
