Remembering D-Day

June 6, 1944

by Tina~in_ut

The Mayors of Grandcamp and Cricqueville, join veteran Rangers Len Lomell and Jack Kuhn and the two daughters of Col. Rudder, in a wreath-laying ceremony to honor departed Rangers.

I realize there are many stories from D-Day and many heroes, but I want to tell you about one event from that day that is of particular interest to me. I can’t believe how little I know about WWII and the many sacrifices and acts of heroism that were carried out by our young, brave soldiers during the D-Day invasion. In school, I either didn’t pay much attention during class, or we just didn’t cover WWII in depth. In any case, I want to tell you about Pointe du Hoc.

On June 6, 1944, during the pre-dawn hours, Companies D, E, and F of the 2nd Ranger Battalion, led by Lt. Colonel James E. Rudder, began their mission to scale the sheer cliffs at Pointe du Hoc in order to take out the six 155mm guns set in casemates along the Normandy coastline. The German stronghold had been bombed repeatedly in the weeks prior to the invasion, but it was thought that the guns still posed a threat and needed to be neutralized. The 225 men were to land at the base of Pointe du Hoc by 6:30am and signal for reinforcements by 7:00am, but they found themselves off course and landed 40 minutes late. Using ropes and ladders, they were to scale the 100 foot cliffs while under enemy fire. They had a heck of a time because the ropes were soaked and slippery, but they persevered and were still able to climb up the cliff in record time and most of the men were at the top within 15 minutes.

At the top, the men found that the guns had been moved and the landscape looked like the moon…..filled with craters from the bombing. This worked to their advantage as they were able to use the craters for cover and immediately began to shoot at the Germans. A smaller group of men moved out to find the guns. They had been moved about a mile inland facing Utah Beach. The men destroyed the guns one by one using thermite grenades. Their mission was a success and it was only 9:00am.

One of the guns discovered inland

Lt. Col Rudder set up his command post near the edge of the cliffs and the men went on the defensive. They had expected reinforcements to arrive, but because of their late arrival at Pointe du Hoc, the reinforcements were re-deployed to Omaha Beach. For two days, Rudder’s Rangers held off the German counterattacks and were finally relieved around noon on June 8th by troops from Omaha Beach. Of the 225 men who set off the morning of the 6th, no more than 90 were able to continue the fight and nearly 80 lost their lives. Rudder himself sustained wounds but carried on despite them.

Colonel Rudder's HQ on the edge of the cliff

Every year at this time, thousands of people visit Normandy and attend ceremonies to honor those who served. Families of those who gave their lives and even some of the veterans themselves attend. Friends of mine took their granddaughter this week. Another friend is there today. And yet another wishes she was there. Why? To show respect for the men who courageously fought to liberate Europe.

The Mayors of Grandcamp and Cricqueville, join veteran Rangers Len Lomell and Jack Kuhn and the two daughters of Col. Rudder, in a wreath-laying ceremony to honor departed Rangers.

If you ever get a chance to visit France, make it a point to visit Normandy. When you see the enormous dagger monument out on the Pointe, remember Lt. Col. Rudder and his Rangers and all that they, and men just like them, have done for our country.

Beautiful blog today. I personally knew a man (the grandfather of last weeks wedding groom) who fought on the beaches of Normandy. I have heard some incredible stories and know that there were stories that would never be told just as incredible.

Bless all our service men who fought then and who are fighting today.

Congrats on 1st AGAIN Joey! Good morning to you and to all the Hooters who are coming in after this post.

Morning Glories!

Joey got first again!!! Wahoo!

Tina: Thank you for the informative blog this morning. I am always grateful for our men and women in uniform!

I always seem to stop and watch documentaries about World War II. There is such a rich history and courageous stories that have come out of that war. Really amazed how people pulled together and the strength they all showed.

Bon: from area 51. I have been reading the online news about Ebay but have not caught any tv news. Was it about them losing their court case to Hermes?

BarbWa: You are and were so beautiful!

Iteach: Positive thoughts of you flying. I am a nervous flyer too!

Mary/Jamie: LOL Jamie who the heck is Jamie?? Read the post and realized it was you! Hmmm I thought did she decide on a name change before her European trip?? Is she an international jewel thief? hehehehe

Good morning to all who post after me.

Sorry about the deleted comment. When I got back to the computer my post was still in the box. Why? I don't know. I clicked on 'publish' only to discover it had already gone through. These little kinks mystify me.

Good Morning night.owls.sb and East Bay J. I am off to read Tina's blog. It looks interesting.

Barbara_in_COviaWA said...

OK...no one else.
So just to cover my bases I'll say what others say...

Good Morning to everyone who shows up after I post!

My grandfather served in WWII. He doesn't talk about it. He doesn't go to any of the reunions, or celebrations. According to my mom, he seemed to just want to put it all behind him. He has said very little. All I knew for years was that he was in the Navy in the South Pacific. He told my dad once that he had to pick up dead bodies out of the ocean and once he went to grab a guy and all it was was his head. Just a few years ago he finally told someone else in the family that they had to sneak onto islands in the middle of the night and crawl into holes and caves and find where the Japanese were. I'm thinking that my grandfather probably had to deal with hand-to-hand combat and has never gotten over having to take someones life. In my eyes, he has always been such a gentle, caring man. I can see how he could never get over anything like that.

Tinkatia said...

Thank you Tina for such an inspiring piece of work. You have made us think today. We learned a lot about WW11 in school but to us it was just numbers. I remember learning that almost 133,00 troops from England, Canada and the United States landed on D- day. Twelve thousand young men were killed that day. The tragedy was so large we couldn't even fathom it so we just memorized the numbers. You read a story about Lt. Col Rudder and you realize there were thousands of stories.

Barbara - My grandfather also served in the war and he would never talk about it either. He was gassed and it was life changing. He still lived to be 70 but his health was never good. Now we have our men and women out there again. It is so sad. Wasn't it WW 1 that was supposed to be the war that ended all wars? Will we never learn?

Zona - Your QOTD gave me my first laugh today. Thank you.

Jennifer said...

Tina: WOW! That was a very good blog! I agree with Carol that you worked very hard on it! Thanks for sharing it with us.

My mother told me that her father was in the war and he came back an alcoholic (and he wouldn't talk of it either). I never knew him because he became a very abusive man and so my grandmother left him when her children were still small.

I do feel for our soldiers who had (and have) to see so many disturbing things that no human should ever have to see!

I pray we can end all our conflicts soon so all our soldiers can come home alive.

I am very grateful to all those who have given up their lives and fought for our freedoms.

Tina: What an interesting blog. I hated history in school so I didn't retain anything. Now I watch the History channel a lot because it fascinates me. Maybe because I was alive when so much of it happened. (I am really old) Thanks so much for all the research that must have taken to write about this memorable day.

What I forgot to say was great blog TINA!

The man I spoke of earlier who fought on Normandy on D-Day later died (5 years ago) on D-Day. His wife said that it was perfect, because no matter how much life they lived after that day, a part of him had already died on D-Day.
He and his wife and buddies from the war did go back to services twice. She said that it would take weeks for him to get back to "himself" after those visits.

I see Ms. MEK snuck in and took 25! lol, good job

Good Morning Owls!

I missed you all yesterday, as I was at the zoo with the kindergarten classes... and it was raining! We had a lot of fun, but at the end of the day I called hubby and told him, "I am NOT cooking dinner tonight. I have a date with a bath tub and a few ibuprofin!" I came home, got the kids a snack and went upstairs. I was chilled to the bone and aching from walking on concrete while telling the 6 boys to slow down, hurry up, stop climbing on the fences, .... it was a DAY!

I am going to get some breakfast and I will try to come back again. Just wanted to pop in and say HI to everyone.

Mary/MI said...

Glynis~ You were a real trooper! Now jump in the tub and have Calgon "take you away".

MEK~Are you de-bugged yet?

Time for me to finish laundry and mop floors. How exciting!

Tinkatia said...

Jennifer - Excellent work. You not only passed. You got an "A". Now where is Joey's assignment? He is such a sweet boy but sometimes a little irresponsible. Keep trying Joey. I love you too.

Glynis - Oh how I remember those boys on the field trips. I would wake up on field trip days excited thinking it was going to be such a fun day. I would come home more tired than if I had taught round the clock. Do you find that true for you Iteach?

Tinkatia said...

Joey - I checked back and I saw you started but didn't finish your assignment. Keep at it Lad.

I did not go to Normandy. When I was in France I stayed in Paris however with my Host Of Nations club we did got see Ann Frank's house and toured it and we also went to a church that had sketetons stacked up behind bars who were victims of the Holocaust. There was hundreds of them and it was sad.
My grandpa was hit by a mortar shell at Iwo Jima. They put his body with those of dead soldiers. They later found a pulse. He did live until the age of 53 parylized in both legs and one arm. He never complained and lived out his life with a smile on his face and love for us all and grateful to be with us.
My Dad had 2 deployments to an unpopular war. I hate how he was treated and how all of us children were treated by doped up hippies. My dad was always very patriotic and he loved America. He didn't want to leave us behind to go to a war but it was his job. Our soldiers are brave. They were brave then. Wives and children of the soldiers serving were treated like shit which is sad. I learned at a tender young age to be strong and hang tough.
Glynis
CanadianGirl, Wabbear, Trey, etc were all in chat and asked about you. I mentioned that I saw you on Myspace making cookies. LOL. Wabbear was discussing his wedding plans. Go Wabby!

Hi Everyone!

TINA: Thank you so much for this fascinating blog. I had never before heard of the battle at Pointe du Hoc. I wasn't much of a History fan in school, and WWII seems so far away when you're 16.

Reading now about Rudder's Rangers...I realize what an incredibly important role they had in the D-Day invasion.

My neighbor served in WWII at Anzio. He still has trouble talking about it. He enlisted at 19and they put him into the medical corps. He knew nothing about being a corpsman. I have seen this man cry even now, because his fellow soldiers had injuries that were so severe he couldn't help them. His wife has told me he still has nightmares and wakes up screaming.

Thank you again, TINA for such a powerful blog. I will forever remember it and give thanks to those that fought on D-Day.

Tina thank you for your blog. My father served in WW11. He never talked about it much. He did say that he drove a jeep for a general in England. He also told me he saw a grave full of children's corpes. I'm not sure where that was. I wished I had talked to him more about the war. Something I regret not doing. Someone that he served overseas with has gone to Europe many times and attended many memorial services. Dad was asked to go but always declined. He never joined the Legion or participated in any Remenbrance Day services. He would go to the cenotaph after the service. I think it was just too raw for him. He said he never once regretted serving his country and like so many other service men and women he was buried in his uniform as per his request.

Have a good weekend everyone.

Hey everyone. I am back from the DMV and it only took three hours. I am reading Eat, Pray, Love and I brought it along with me, but I couldn't concentrate on reading because there were two guys sitting next to me that were scoping out all the women in the place and making comments about each one. So naturally, I had to look up each time they moved on to another woman. LOL

TINA - Thank you for the history lesson today......you wrote a beautiful blog....for a very special person.

My Grandfather served in WWII. He was a cook in the South Pacific....so I'm not sure he really saw all the horrors others saw. My Grandfather died when I was 5 so I really never had a chance to ask him about any of his experiences. 2 years ago when my Grandma moved off the farm, she found his Navy uniform and the flag they used to drape his coffin at his funeral. My brother had a beautiful box built to hold both the flag and the uniform.

My first thought on the pic was IBB!!! Now I'm not so sure....maybe EAST BAY J?

I hope everyone has a great Friday night!!!

Joey - Yes my spelling is according to the Oxford English Dictionary. We were taught at St. Ann's the English spelling of words. They were actually marked "incorrect" if we spelled the words the American way. That isn't the case now. But then-
"practice" was the noun and
"practise" was the verb and you had better not mix them up.
-The past tense of "spell" was
"spelt".
-"program" was "programme"
-"or" words were "our"
-Words with "z" pronounced "zed" not "zee" were spelt with an "s".
Americans must have started out with the English spelling when they first arrived but as a new country they had every right to do things their own way. I still spell the way I was taught except for "z" words. "Recognise" does not look correct to me so I use the American "Recognize". My first computer was programmed with British spelling and it kept telling me all my "z" words (and there are a lot of them) were incorrect.
That's enough of that. On to more interesting topics. Like who is the "beauty of the day?"

I haven't a clue so I am going to guess Ibebold just so I can be in the game.

Jodi said...

TINKA - That's very sweet of you.....but not very becoming for a "quackwhore"!!! lol!! What movie are you going to watch tonight?

Tinkatia said...

Jodi - Hush - Don't call me that in front of my students. They will be very disillusioned, especially Joey. You know how sensitive he is. It would not be good if he found out his Miss Tinka had clay feet.
Did you send that duck picture with the red shoes to Tina? I know she would love that. Don't send it to my daughter however. I censure very closely what picture comments go to her myspace. She doesn't know it but I have the power to delete what I don't think is appropriate for her young eyes.

goldie said...

No clue who the pic is of, but she is pretty.

Zona- if you lost your snapper I will have to come 'thimp' you.

Jodi- I see you didn't blow away today. Holy snikkies it was windy!

So tomorrow is the lovely outdoor wedding, in the fricking heat, humidity, chance of severe weather and wind. Anyone want to go in my place?? Mr. Goldie is a good date.

Tinkatia said...

Jodi - I forgot to answer your question. I am going to watch
"French Kiss" again. Zona sent it to me and I have only watched it once. It's really a good movie.

I better get going.....have to pick Sam up from her first "formal" dance.

TINK - I did share it with TINA....and no, I did not put in on ZONA'S page.....we wouldn't want to shock her!!! :P

Hey GOLDIE!!! Had to drive out to Cottage Grove to MR. JODI'S job site.....freakin' mother of pearl left is insulin at home.....it's not like he has to shoot up 3 times a day, or has been doing this for over 30 years!!! Where was I going with this? Oh yeah, the wind was horrible on the beltline.....and do you think that would slow anyone down? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! Have fun at the wedding.....I'm sure you'll look great all windblown.....kind of like Farrah!!! :P

Wow!! I love all the education that goes on here in the nest. First a history lesson, and now spelling and grammar!

Tinkatia said...

Having nothing better to do I checked all the comments and only Tina and Barbara in Wa guessed correctly. Tina had it right away. Barbara waffled a bit but decided on Lynn. Mek knew who it was and wasn't saying. I said I knew who it was after Carol told us but I was fibbing. Glynis had the funniest guess. She said it was Joey. That's twice today my boy has been wounded. First he's a brown noser and now he looks like a girl. Way to go girls. The poor boy is going to need therapy.

Tinkatia said...

Jennifer - Didn't you hear? We are known as the educational blog.

Jennifer said...

Tink: I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE "French Kiss"!!! I think I can relate to "Kate" and the flying thing (as I have never flown)!

My Polish friend, Mirek, reminds me of the character that Kevin Klein plays. He's very "blunt" and often speaks his mind (quite openly) the way "Luc" does!

I own this movie and watch it over and over again! I KNEW we had similar tastes!

...And similar tastes as Zona too!!

Tina~in_ut said...

I'm three for three~ yay!!!

jennifer and tinka~ you both are cracking me up~

Jennifer said...

Tink:
I wish I knew this before I spent so much on college loans! I could have had a FREE ride! LOL!! ; )

Speaking of "education", can anyone tell me how to get rid of garder-snakes?! They have been "invading" my yard and porches for the last couple of summers! I now see one is nesting between where the foundation and my porch meet! ICK! That will scare away the company! PLUS....I am PETRIFIED to walk out in my own yard!!!

ICK!!!

I have tried the "snake be gone" and it didn't seem to work (it smelled like moth balls)! Anyone else have a remedy they can share?!

Jennifer said...

Tina~in_ut said...

uh.....Tink~ if you are monitoring Zona's page and deleting the naughty comments, who is deleting the naughty comments that she posts on other peoples pages.....(like the last one she JUST LEFT ME!!!!) :)~

goldie said...

jennifer and tink are french kissing?

I don't think Joey looks like a brown nosing girl.

Snorted my soda at the windblown look. Yeah right, all 12 fine thin hairs on head will be going in different directions. And my skirt will be blowing up and I am going to be cussing and it won't be pretty. I will just have to get drunk at the reception. Yup, thats its- and bring a comb.

Jennifer said...

Well, my pizza is here, and I think I will put in a movie myself. Not sure what yet....

I'll check back in later...

Carol: So sorry to see you have the "curse" right now! I am so glad I don't have to worry about that anymore. I can empathize though as I used to have it bad!

I know it's weird, but a heating pad on my FEET would help! (Maybe due to pressure points?) My mom always had me do that...and it did help! (Along with TONS of Ibuprofen)!!!

Tinkatia said...

Jennifer - I thought by our messages we had similar tastes. Isn't it funny how many times we can enjoy watching the same movie? I get something different out of them each time. My daughter, Cara, does the same thing. My son-in-law thinks we are wasting our time as he has never watched a movie twice. He doesn't know what he's missing. Your description of "French Kiss" makes me want to put it on right now so I think I will be bidding you all adieu. I will check back later because right now I don't know where my daughter, Zona, is right now.

Tina - Three for Three eh? What inside information are you getting may I ask? Also I have a feeling you are trying to malign my daughter's reputation. Dianne tried that too back on 100 day when she described Zona-my-Baby's behaviour as being inappropriate. I told her then and I will tell you now that I do not believe my little one behaves in anyway that is disrespectful. I refuse to believe it. She is a perfect daughter in all ways.

Now I must get that movie on. Be good little owls.

Tinkatia: Thanks for thinking of me! It's been a busy day!

As soon as I read and viewed the photos from today's blog, I was forcefully reminded of a photo that Ryan Macdonald, Ross's friend, put up on his travel blog a couple of days ago.

It's a photo of some artwork on the wall of a brick structure that shows signs of damage from the war. The art is a painting of a man apparently hanging himself.

Ryan asked us what it evoked, and I posted a comment about what it evoked in me.

To read about the thousands killed on both sides on D-Day evoked exactly the same thoughts!
