Wishing Wells

by Bebbi

Ever since I was a young child, I have always loved wishing wells. It used to be that every chance I got to throw a penny in a fountain or well and make a wish, I would. For me, wishing wells hold the hopes and dreams of my youth. Also, I loved shooting stars, picking up pennies, and any other way that you can make a wish. I do still, to this day, pick up pennies and say, “See a penny, pick it up and all the day you’ll have good luck.”

I guess that is the Disney child in me, the whimsical, wistful, naïve child who dreams of rainbows, lollipops, tooth fairies, Santa Claus, and all things magical. I think my first memory of far away lands was probably the Wizard of Oz. Also, I loved H.R. Puff ‘N stuff, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Chronicles of Narnia and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. To me, wishing wells are one of those truly mystical things. It is the Happy Magic, the good and the sweet kind that isn’t scary or ugly.

When I was at my dad’s house this past weekend, I was walking (yeah, I know, you hear about *that* enough) and came across this awesome wishing well. I have seen it before, but now I have an outlet for the thoughts and stories that turn around and around in my head! I decided I would take some pictures of it and write a little piece.

In August, when Shiann and I went to my dad’s house, I walked by that well. As I passed it, I thought that maybe, just maybe, it was a real wishing well. Just by itself, in the middle of this property, quietly waiting for someone to come along and grant any wish that one would want to make. The odd thing is, I haven’t made a wish in it yet. Actually, I hadn’t gotten really close to it until this last visit. I don’t want the disappointment that comes with finding that awesome magic that I have in my imagination isn’t real. I would rather just dream. Sometimes, fantasies are way better than the realities. I love that little sparkle of hope and innocence in me, but I will keep my fantasy and I will not go to that well and make a wish. Does that sound cynical? Maybe I should make that wish? Would you throw a penny in and make a wish?

I think the wishing wells of today are those chain emails that come around. Forward this to 10 of your closest friends and your wish will come true. Forward this, and in exactly 11 minutes and 11 seconds you will get a phone call that will change your life. Hmmmmm, I don’t usually send them. I will send them if it is a pretty picture though. Those do not fulfill my need for my wishes to come true, they just make me feel a lot of pressure that if I don’t send them, something bad is going to happen.

Frank Kafka said, “Youth is happy because it has the ability to see beauty. Anyone who keeps the ability to see beauty never grows old.” I see beauty in this old wishing well and with that, I can touch and live those hopeful moments of my innocence again. Maybe I will go and pitch a penny in it the next time I visit my dad.

Morning Glories!

Jodi you are up and got first! Yay!

Bebbi throw the penny in the well!!! Do it! I love wells and fountains to toss pennies in. No harm no foul I say. Make a wish you never know. I do have to say when I was a kid and saw all of the coin in a fountain I wondered how to scoop some of the coin up and take it home. LOL

I had no computer yesterday from the last time I posted until this morning. I was starting to panic! Had a crappy virus get through. Can I just say the people who invent these damn things need to be flogged! Generally I am not for violence but the havoc they create is a floggable offense to me!

I need to give credit where credit is due. Mr. Lynn D has been working on my computer since 3:00 am to get up and running for me!

Goldie I am so sorry about your friend. (((Hugs)))

Iteach I hope Carolyns birthday was a cake eating success!

I did not get my hair done or my upper lip restyled yesterday as my gal had to cancel at the last minute! So I need to see if I can get in today!

Yesterday was surely a trial!

Happy Birthday Delores??

If that is who Jodi is referring to in her last post? Wish you a fun filled day.

Bebbi, Great blog. I love wishing wells, too. In my senior in High School my parents moved from Los Angeles where I grew up, to Santa Maria and bought a brand new house. They moved there to fulfil a dream of theirs to own an Italian restaurant. Right after we moved in, my Dad built a 'wishing well' in the fromt yard, much like the one in your picture.

Of course it wasn't a real well. My Mom planted it with flowers, but she said it was still her wishing well, because their wish came true. Thanks for bringing back that memory for me.

Happy birthday Dee Dee.

Good morning Lynn. Thank goodness for Hubbies that know how to fix computers.

I'm off to walk Canton for his morning constitutional. I know, TMI.

Wishing all the Owls that land a great Friday. BBL

BEBBI - Go for it!!! I'm forever wishing on the first star, a fountain....ANYTHING!!! And my Mom was the one that always picked up the pennies.....but instead of what you say, she would always say...."find a penny, give it to a friend". Maybe she was willing to pass the luck onto someone else.

Waving a wing @ SACBARB & LYNN D!!!

And yes, I was referring to my friend Delores!!! :D

Lynn D said...

Good Morning SacBarb! Yes it is one of the perks of my marriage that Mr. Lynn D can fix my computer! LOL

Jodi you are still awake! Waving at you!

Good Morning Hooters!

Jodi got 1st! Congrats!

Bebbi- great blog. I love wishing wells and fountains too. I always pitch in a penny.
This summer when we were in MN for vacation we had the babies (they are 1 1/2 and 2 1/2 and I will probably call them the babies the rest of their lives)and we went to a place with a wishing fountain. I got to give them their first penny's to throw in. Brynn was a gamer, Gavin didn't want throw his. But he relented. Not sure they got the whole make a wish thing- but I made one for them.

Thanks Lynn- the bummer in all of this (besides Ed's death) is that the family planned a memorial service for him a week from tommorrow. We cant go! The kids are coming from MN to go the Badger game and I am babysitting. Also, I had invited my whole family up for a big Thanksgiving dinner (we are scattered on the actual day and Mr. Goldie and I always do volunteer work that day), plus my Mom is coming to stay the whole weekend. The service is about a 2 1/2 hour drive from us. I am really feeling bad about not being able to go.

Hope everyone has a good, peaceful day.

Forgot to say hi to Sacbarb too! Hi Lynn, Jodi and Sacbarb!!!

LYNN D - Still up.....lol!! I got to SLEEP IN til about 5am today!! It's my day off. Just puttering around the house....you know laundry, dishes.....there's always SOMETHING to do!!! I am going to make a huge pot of homemade soup and a fresh batch of apple crisp. The soup was the only recipe that I didn't get from my Mom before she died. I had watched her make it a gazillion times in my lifetime, so after a couple of times I finally got it right...even got my Dad and brother's seal of approval!!

Jodi said...

Good morning MISS GOLDIE!!

I have to go get prettied up. I'm going to go have lunch with my Grandma at her assisted living.

I'll bbl.

Lynn D said...

Goldie wish I lived closer, I would help take care of the babies so you could go. I am sure they know you are there in spirit. Love ya!

Jodi even tho I no longer have a full time job it amazes me how much there is to do everyday. I think I have a much harder time now keeping up then when I was working full time!

Gosh I can almost smell the apple crisp from here.

Good Morning All Owls.

Bebbi - I wanted to comment on the beautiful blog you wrote. I so much agree with everything you said. I believe in magic and all that it implies. I don't think chain letter have anything to do with magic and I won't send them on but I love wishing wells, "The First Star", Santa Claus and fairies.

I will be back tomorrow and I will read all the comments. Wishing everyone a wonderful day. Love, Tinka

scirish said...

Bebbi....I wish on anything!!! Well, except those stupid e-mails (wonder why I feel guilty when I delete them tho?)

I don't know if anyone has heard of this one tho. When you open a new pack of ciggys (I know...filthy habit) you turn the middle cigarette in the middle row upside down and smoke it last. As you smoke it, you make a wish. Since I just ordered herbal cigarettes to help me stop smoking (again!) maybe that should be my new wish!!

WISHING everyone a terrific day!

Good Morning/MidDay to Jodi and all who followed, and HBTDelores!

Bebbi~~"Wishing" that sense of childhood's magic stays with you forever. Love the rustic wishing well photos!

One of the highlights of working at the Pacific Science Center (built for the '62 Seattle World's Fair, adjacent to the Space Needle) when just out of college was the annual barbecue party and draining/cleaning of the many huge pools beneath the soaring white arches and fountains to collect all the 'make a wish' coins tossed by tourists and visitors. Thanks for that memory today!

(to be cont'd)

LynnD~~Seems several of us picked up the same cyber-flu bug this month....hmmmm.

SacBarb~~A family/home built around Italian food sounds to me like a 'wish come true' all by itself~~Viva Garlic Alfredo!

Goldie~~Somehow I bet your friends know you will be with them in spirit.

(Tink)~~Have a wonderful day. I think I see your sis & my mom giggling together as they sneak an early taste of birthday cake icing together.

Scirish~~How's the back today?

Tina/Zona et al~~Enjoy!

Good morning HODI,SACBARB, LYNN, GOLDIE, SCIRISH, TINA,&TINK

HODI, congrats on first and I hope you enjoy lunch with your grandma today. Your mom sounds like a kind and generous person

LYNN, It must be flu season for computers also. I had one the other day and it was the worst kind.Had to reload everything. It is such an invasion.

GOLDIE, I hope you will be feeling healed soon.

SACBARB, What a wonderful wish come true for your family. It shows that when someone is so passionate we can just about make anything happen. I do hope you will pick up Canton's constitutional :).

SCIRISH, I need to stop the bad habit along with you.

TINK, I know you probably won't be back today, but my prayers are still with you. Thanks for letting me know.

BEBBI, Thank you for the wonderful blog. I am a dreamer. Sometimes we need to get lost in our dreams, and wishing wells, and fairy tales. It helps to balance the realities of live that too often are not pleasant. I think we all needed your story by today. So thanks again.

I hope all of you have a pleasant day and all who follow on the nest.

P.S. One of my favorite movies in "Three Coins in a Fountain".

Hi guys!
Just popping in to say we made it back safely from our wonderful vacation. Still unpacking and doing mounds of laundry so no time to read comments or catch up on blogs just yet but hopefully I will in the next couple of days before going back to work on Monday. I didn't want y'all to think we forgot about you!

Goldie, Your friends will know you are there in spirit.

Tina, where not_in_UT are you?

Scirish, I have never heard that before.

Bon, Yes we had lots of good Italian food which is why I look like I do. My parents were in their mid 50s when they embarked on this new career and opened the first pizza place in Santa Maria. It was very popular and it enabled them to live comfortably in their old age. They both lived to be 91.

Tina~in_ut said...

lol sacbarb~ I'm sitting in Zona's house hitting her! :)~

sacBarb said...

Lani, Yes, I pick up Canton's leavings. He has a nifty container attached to his leash that holds small plastic bags in a roll, so I just pull out a little bag and scoop it up. I have noticed, however, that some people do not pick up after their dogs and that is just RUDE!

It is supposed to get to 93 here today so we are going to the dog beach. Gonna enjoy the breeze and walk in the surf.

BBL.

Bebbi Great blog and what charming photos of the wishing well! I don't recall ever being near a real wishing well but I find fountains hard to resist. It's fun to recapture a bit of the magic I believed in as a child.

What a amazing quote!

It is funny how one object, or song, or quote, or anything can trigger a childhood memory and all our wonderful dreams... It is like the wishing well had magic in it. And as a child I felt the same way..

Kudos, Bebbi
