Secret to a Long Marriage

by Dianne

An older gentleman goes into a bar and hears the other patrons discussing the ups and down of marriage.

"Next week my wife and I will celebrate our fiftieth anniversary," he tells them.

"That's great. What's your secret for a long and happy marriage," one asks.

"Well, you have to do nice things for your wife."

"Such as?"

"Well, for our twenty fifth anniversary I took her to Italy ."

"That is nice. What are you going to do for your fiftieth?"

"I'm going back to visit her."

Dianne LOL @ the blog. I bet that wife has been having a fine time in Italy without the husband.

I hope you are having a nice easy drive to Cheyenne today. Is that where you go to gamble? It sounds like you have plenty of fun things planned for your June vacation. Isn't it nice to have a trip to look forward to? I'll have to think of something to do after the Vegas trip.

I was awakened in the night with the sound of heavy rain. It has stopped for now but I think we are supposed to have showers off and on for the rest of the day. Next week looks like nice weather. I'm glad for that as my daughter will be flying on Tuesday to go back east for work. I can't remember if she is going to Wisconsin or Minnesota. I hope there won't be any more bad weather back there during the two days she'll be gone. I'll be taking care of her two dogs. Did I already write about that? I can't remember.

I've been really lazy lately. I think it's this weather. I just want to hunker down and binge watch tv shows or read. Oh, and eat, unfortunately.

Barb Well, you've got the ball rolling on the new flooring. Good for you. My house isn't as big as yours and I need new flooring, too, but am stalling about it due to cost. That's great that you won't have to worry about boarding your cats.

I was thinking the other day about when we were all on Ross's blog and how late at night we were hanging out at our computers until the wee hours. I would still be fully dressed until I went to bed. What a difference a decade makes. Now I put on nightgown and robe right after taking the dog out for the last time in the evening at around 10. Most nights I go to bed right after Colbert's monologue unless there's a guest I have special interest in. Even then, I can always catch it the next day since I am recording it.

I see that Arie the Bachelor and Lauren are traveling around the world having a grand old time. Good for them. I guess that's one way of getting away from all the flack here at home. By the time they get back, the public won't care so much that he chose the wrong woman first.

Mary I am so glad that things are going well for Jim. He is so lucky to have you to take care of him and keep him in line. I'm sure you are looking forward to your upcoming vacation. You definitely deserve a get-away.

Here you all are!
Jim can drop me off in Italy anytime lol!

Dianne,Sorry you're not feeling well! Sinus crap sucks! Your vaca sounds like fun!
I didn't know you were meeting up with Bebbi. I miss you all so much!

Barb, wow, what a project you have lined up! We have only one room left without carpet. That is our bedroom. Jim wants it left in. Cold feet in the morning I guess lol!
My floors are mismatched. I would love to redo them all in one style.
I cracked up about your "toe dream!" Condom??? LOL!!

Justlin, Jim has been smoke free for 22 days! Zoie and I can now sit and watch tv with Jim in the living room! Have rarely done that due to the smoke. I am anxious to wash windows and walls. It will wait until after my vaca.
I rarely watch late night shows anymore. I just don't know all the young guests they have. I look in the paper t.v. guide to see if there are any entertainers I know. Guess I am just getting too old lol!

This morning I took Queenie for a long walk. Jim was hedging about taking her because it was so windy. I told him I would do it. I am always very careful because of the rough terrain in the back of our property. I usually take the neighbors well beaten path. Not this time! Bad mistake! I thought I was being so careful! I was walking slow and using my hickory walking stick when my foot caught on something prolly a creeping vine, and instantly down I went..hard! I heard a snap and thought I broke something. I laid there for a few minutes when all of a sudden here comes Queenie to the rescue, or so I thought! She seemed to be checking me over with all of her licks! Grabbed my favorite stocking cap, and off she ran! I realized I couldn't just lay there all day and rolled myself to a nearby tree and propped myself up after making sure I hadn't broken anything. Queenie turned around to see me up and headed back to the house. I limped back, fed and watered her and put her in the kennel. I went looking for my fave. cap. I had seen Queenie chewing like crazy on it before I fed her! Well, I found it and odd as it may be, there wasn't a thread pulled on it! She always demolishes anything put in her mouth! I told Jim maybe she was hanging on to eat to take to him in case I couldn't get back. Who knows?
I am thinking the "snap" I heard may have been the scar tissue around my knee breaking. I always seem to hurt my bad knee!
I iced it up, took Motrin and went to get a mani/pedi. I am sure I will be sore by morning. Thank God I didn't break my hip or re-damage my knee!
Sorry about the novel lol!

Just_Lin said...

Mary Oh, I'm so sorry you fell. It sounds like it was a bad one. Thank goodness you didn't break anything. Geez! Did you have your phone with you so you could call for help if you needed it? Maybe Queenie was going to make like Lassie and take your cap back to Jim to show him you were in trouble. No? LOL Well, I'm glad you were able to get back home on your power, slow and gimpy as it may have been. I bet that massage chair felt good after all that.

Mary/MI said...

Justlin, I forgot to take my phone. I always preach to Jim to keep his phone with him, duh, lol!
I can't wait until Jim takes back his doggie duties! He has been out a couple of times and even walked her a bit. He has been doing it less I noticed. He says he feels week. I reminded him that the home care nurse told him that he would feel that way until his body got used to the meds. I wish he would move more! He is milking this thing too much lol! All medical peeps said he can do anything he wants as long as he takes the meds. I told him I intended to take it easy today and keep my feet up. He didn't make any moves to feed and water Queenie. I finally bundled up and did it. I even walked her a bit. The fresh air did me good. I called the place that usually takes Queenie so I wouldn't have to worry about her or Jim while I was gone. Unfortunately with spring break that week, she was full up! I am on her waiting list.
Jim has a lot of home therapists coming next week. I hope to squeeze in a massage somewhere.
Have a great Sunday!!

J/L, It was supposed to rain here yesterday, but we had a beautiful day, so Michelle and I went to the flooring stores and I was having bouts of apoplexy at the cost. Finally, at the third store we went to, I asked about a sample I liked a lot and it was on SALE. I told the guy helping us that was my favorite word after FREE! He didn't laugh. Probably heard that a million times. Anyway, I asked him about an additional discount since I need 1875 sq. ft. which I happen to know is more than the standard order. He gave me an additional $.30 off and an additional $.25 off the underlayment. It doesn't sound like much, but every little bit helps. I don't have a start date yet, but the contractor and I are going to talk about it tomorrow. I am anxious to get started, but I have a lot of work to do beforehand. I have to pack up everything on the tops of all the furniture. I have started, but I tire easily and my fibro is really flaring. I have ordered some CBD oil without THC and hopefully it will help with the pain and give me some energy. Caryn Franson is taking it and it's helping her a lot, so I got it from the same place. It won't be here for a week, though. Anyway, the new floor will be in before we go to LV.

I watch Colbert's monologue, too, then I change to The Tonight show and I usually stay up through Seth Meyers' monologue and "A Closer Look" segment. He and his writers really have a good take on the current state of U.S. affairs. So, I still say up til the wee hours. I try to sleep until about 9am when I feed the cats. I trained them early not to bug me too early and they are really good about it. They usually sleep until about 9am right along side me.

Mary, I'm so glad you are going to get to go on your trip. You really need to relax after all you have been doing lately. Good for Jim and not smoking. And YOU need to really take care when you are walking the dogs. I know how it is to walk on uneven terrain and even with a walking stick, it isn't easy. Try to stay on more even turf! Even though we are both short and don't have far to fall, it still can do some severe damage! LOL

sacBarb said...

Dianne, LOL at the blog. If you have to be left by your husband, Italy isn't a bad place to do it! Is your toe all healed yet? I hope it isn't hurting. Your June trip sounds like it will be fun. How long are you going to be gone? I'm really looking forward to going to Vegas with Linda and Lynn. I've never seen Elton John and I'm looking forward to that, too.

Hi....we are back home from cheyenne, wy, early today. I woke up at 7 and LOUIS was already awake so we went to the hotel breakfast early and headed home. We had really nice weather.

JL, no Cheyenne is not where we go gambling. Cheyenne is about three hours from here. We met our friends for dinner at their country club and which was very nice. We then went to see The Texas Tenors. You might remember them from America’s Got Talent a long time ago. They came in second and have been touring ever since. We’ve seen them in Branson a couple of times. The show was wonderful. Our friends loved them and they recd lots of standing ovations....all kinds of music. It was such a fun night. They won’t be back in Branson until the end of June..darnit. I think I’m officially a groupie. We go gambling in Blackhawk in colorado which is only about an hour or so from here. I wish you would come visit and I’d take you there. I hope the weather is nice for your daughter. It doesn’t sound like we are going to have a nice week. They are saying March will go out like a lion here. It is fun to have a trip to look forward to I’m the not too far future. I’m really looking more forward to Hawaii cruise in January!

Barb, oh boy it sounds like you have a real project ahead of you. It will be really nice when all finished. It’s just preparing for it that I wouldn’t like either. Don’t hurt yourself working too much. Take rests. Glad you recd some discounts and a sale. Did you like the sample when you got home? You’ll have to take pictures when all done. At least it sounds like you have a plan. You’re not dreaming about my toe condom lately, are you?

Mary, how are you feeling? Wow, be careful. You don’t want to go on a trip with a broken bone. It’s very soon now. So glad to hear Jim is doing better. So glad also that he’s sticking with no smoking. I hope he keeps strong with it.
We will have lunch in June with Bebbi when we go see LOUIS’s daughters. They live in the same city. I go at 7:30 AM (too early ) to the PA for this sore throat and sinus or whatever tomorrow .. my throat is really scratchy.

I stay up until about 11:30 at night. Tonight I watched three 48 Hours I had recorded. I really like that show. Soon I will start watching This Is Us. Ok time to start getting ready for sleep.

Just_Lin said...

Dianne Well, I was up bright and early this morning as my daughter was dropping off her dogs at 7:30. She's flying to Milwaukee. The weather is nice here but I don't know what it's like there. Even though I have a king size bed, it will be crowded for me the next couple of nights.

This Is Us is a great show. It has great writing and I really like all the characters.

So what's happening with your sore, scratchy throat? I know my allergies have been acting up lately which sets off my asthma. I guess it's because it's spring and it's been kind of breezy, carrying the pollen all over. We're supposed to have nice weather all week and then maybe more rain next week.

Yesterday I got a mammogram. The squishing seemed tighter and more uncomfortable than usual but maybe that's faulty memory. Anyway, after that I went to Kohl's and tried on some blouses, tops, and jeans. The only thing I ended up with is one blouse which is the least important thing I need. My hunt continues.

Just_Lin said...

Barb You are really on a roll with that flooring. I can hardly wait to see it. You're right that every little discount helps, especially when you multiply it by as many feet as you are dealing with.

I wonder if that oil would help my sciatica. I seem to be too lazy to do the exercises consistently like I should. I know it would be better if I'd lose some of this darn weight. I have regained everything I lost except for a few pounds. I'm very disgusted with myself.

My dog doesn't wake me up but now that I have my daughter's two dogs, the chihuahua usually needs to go out to pee at around 6:30 a.m. so I guess I'll be stumbling out of bed early for the next couple of days.

Just_Lin said...

Mary When I walk my dog, even just around the neighborhood, I take my phone. Ever since the day that I tripped and fell in the street (LOL), I have been really good about taking it. I didn't need it that day but if I would have broken something I would have needed to call a friend for help. My dog didn't even look particularly concerned so she wouldn't be any help at all.

I hope you can get Queenie into the kennel while you're away. I know it would take that worry off your mind. I suspect Jim would step up and do what was needed if he knew you wouldn't be doing it for him. What about Matthew? Can he lend a hand with that, too?

Hi...had my first ever bone density test today. It sure was easy. I had to lose weight before i could have it done. Didn’t do much today...had lunch with a friend and got tax info together to work on this week. We had a medicare supplement person come and talk with us last night. We also filed for LOUIS ‘s medicare yesterday. Now we just wait. Snowed about 2” last night but roads dry today and very pretty out.

JL, hope your daughter had nice weather for flying. Yes, that’s a lot of dogs on your bed. Does your dog get Jealous? He’s so used to having you all to himself. The dr gave me an anti-biotic yesterday for sinus and cough pills. I really don’t notice the cough pills helping much.
I think I asked you before, but do you ever order clothes on line? If it’s a local store, then you can take it back rather than having to mail it back.

I was wondering about that oil too. My lower back always hurts so much. I’d sure be able to walk better. You’ll have to let us know, Barb.

Yes Mary, Take that phone with you everywhere. Did you get Quennie into a kennel yet?

FINALLY had a 4 pound loss today. I’m struggling up and down. I was going to meet my grandson for dinner but by 3:30 it was turning into a blizzard. I headed home and it took an hour and a half to get there. By the time I got to my end of town it was raining. It was a very slow drive. Will have to reschedule next week with Tristan.

JL, how are you doing with the dogs? I hope this weather passes over your daughter.

Barb, you still working on those roms?

Mary, how many days until you leave? Very soon.

Mary/MI said...

Hi all! I leave this Sat morning, early. I have not even started packing! I have not had time for myself. I have been preparing meals and baking to make sure Jim eats a decent meal. Honestly he really is lazy!
I have not heard from the kennel, so I guess Queenie will be at Jim's mercy lol!
Matthew has been down with a bug, I know he will do all he can to make sure the dogs are ok. He must have picked up the bug from one of his customers.I kind of put Zoie in his hands.
Jim doesn't have a lot of patience with her when it comes to taking her out. I feel better knowing Matthew is in charge of her. If she doesn't want to go the way Jim wants to go he pulls on her! I cringed when he told me she slipped her collar the other day when I was getting my hair done. He must have tugged pretty hard for the color to have come off! I scolded him and told him if he hurt her enough to have to go to the Vet, he would be in trouble with me and the law! Seriously!
I finally put my foot down and told him to start taking care of Queenie. He has been babying himself way too much. The physical therapist is making him do exercises and walking outside instead of just sitting all day! Yay! He keeps complaining that he gets winded, well duh, he needs to build up his stamina and lungs. All therapists said it was a mild stroke complicated because of all the years he smoked! Anyone else would have been up and around earlier. Hopefully while I am gone hr will step up his game and get on with life. I know he is discouraged because he is not allowed to drive. Matt and I and many of his buddies are more than willing to see that he gets where he wants to go. He mentioned to one of the therapists that he was going to get a buddy to take him to the casino, she said, no way, you are "home bound" , which means he can only go to places like the pharmacy, post office etc, short trips or Medicare will cut off all the home care. I didn't even know that! I think he will survive another month at home, doing what he usually does, nothing lol!
I guess I too can be impatient! I wouldn't be so hard on him if I hadn't heard from all the therapists that he is very lucky there was no paralysis and can be back to his "normal" soon if he does what they say!

JL, I cracked up at your "Three dog night!" I hope I answered your questions at the top. I wanted to make sure I get in at least on more blog before I get busy..busier!

Dianne, "Snow?". We are supposed to get a bit the day I leave. Good timing. I should be in mid are about that time!

SacBarb, I know! You would think being short would come in handy when it came to falls! I still don't know I did it. I was being so careful, even thinking at the time, "I need to be careful!" lol! I have been sore all week, but doing better with Jim taking over Queenie duty. Matthew seems better today.

sacBarb said...

Dianne, I got the CBD oil in the mail yesterday and started taking it right away. I asked Caryn how long it was before she saw results and she said she started sleeping better in a couple of days, but it took a little longer for the pain to go away. I'll let you know how it goes for me. I really hope it helps with the pain very soon because I have a lot to do before they start doing the floors. They plan to start on April 9th @ 8:00 am. I have to have all the tops of the furniture cleared. I'm going to have to stack boxes in the Laundry room, kitchen and bathrooms. It's going to be very crowded. Then after the floors are done, I have to put it all back! Ughhhhh

sacBarb said...

Mary, I bet Jim will be just fine while you are away. When you are there he knows he can count on you to do what he doesn't do, but when you are gone, he will have to step up! Try not to worry about what's going on at home while you are gone. I know that's easier said than done!

sacBarb said...

J/L, The very reason I got cats was so I didn't have to get up early and let a dog out to pee. I even trained my cats to sleep later and not eat until 9:00 am. They are really good about it, too. I loved the pic you posted of "three dog night." I really did a LOL. So, when you come here in May, I will have all new floors. I am really excited about making this change. I don't plan on doing anything else to my house for quite a while! I am not only exhausted, but my budget won't allow for anything else for a long time!

Just_Lin said...

BarbThat's a lot of work that you have to do to box stuff up. Will Dean be able to help you, especially with heavier stuff like the computer? Don't forget to mark your boxes so you know what box of stuff goes to what room. That's a really big undertaking. Exciting, too.

We've been having hot weather this week. Well, hot for us, anyway. Even my daughter complained about it when she returned yesterday and picked up her dogs. She's used to much warmer weather where she lives. The dogs were very good and didn't wake me up too early, really. No body woke me up at 6:30 like they do when they are home. It turns out that that is more of a habit than a true need. I did learn something new while the dogs where here and that is how much my dog drools when she has to wait while I mix up three bowls of food. All of them get a little wet food mixed in with dry and my daughter's dogs also have meds mixed in with theirs. Anyway, my dog isn't used to waiting so long and the drooling was ridiculous.

Just_Lin said...

Mary Are you packed yet? I don't really pack until the day before a trip, anyway, although I might have a few things sitting out on the dresser that I'm afraid I might forget to take. I do have a list made, too, to remind myself to bring extra shoes or something like that. I think the only things I really get squared away ahead of time are medications, jewelry and hair stuff. My hair stuff goes in a hanging doohickey so I can just hang it in my own bathroom for a couple of days and use stuff out of it until my trip. My travel hair dryer is one of the things I'll having setting out on a dresser so I won't forget it.

Speaking of hair..... I had a hair appointment on Wednesday and cut my hair short again. I totally couldn't deal with the length it had gotten to when trying to grow it longer. Also, it took longer to dry and style it and I was annoyed with that. With my hair hanging down along the sides of my face, I just felt droopy.

Just_Lin said...

Dianne My daughter's dogs were only here for one night. On the first night, much to my surprise, her dogs did not come into my bedroom with me and stayed out on the couch instead. The second night was a different story. At first they stayed out in the living room but then around 4:30 the chihuahua came into my room making huffing noises at me so I put him up on the bed. Then the lab mix came in about 15 minutes later so I directed her onto the bed, too. They both wanted to sleep right next to my body, plus the lab mix wanted her nose positioned under my hand. I definitely felt crowded that night. Everybody was really well behaved, though, so I have no real complaint.

This afternoon I am dropping my car off for a smog certificate. Once I do that, I'll go across the street to the shopping center and go to my usual breakfast/lunch place and eat and read while I wait for my car.

It's going to be another warm day here but late next week we are expecting rain again. I'm glad about that as we really need it.

Hi...Happy Easter weekend. Anyone have plans for the weekend? We are going to brunch with Tammy and family Sunday and then LOUIS and I will go visit my brother at the nursing home. Barb and I are going to go see I Can Only Imagine movie tomorrow and late lunch. Hopefully, we will have nice weather. Today I worked on our taxes and have everything all totaled and ready for tax appt on Monday. Boy,that was quite a job..especially medical.

Barb, this is a dumb question but do you rub the oil on or What? I’m not to updated on these things. I sure hope it makes you feel better soon. Is anyone going to help you with all this packing? It seems like a lot for you to do by yourself. Be so careful. I sure hope you will take some pictures....maybe when JL is there.

JL, boy your bed sounded crowded! I don’t think I’d like that but then I’m not much of a pet person. I have all our hotel reservations made for our trip to Branson and Louisville in June. All the shows booked too. I’m such a planner. I could never start packing the night before a trip. As you all know it takes me forever to,pack even for overnight. I have a running list too for both of us or we'd forget everything. What’s a smog certificate? I haven’t heard of it before now. Are you going to post a new picture with your new hairstyle? I’m trying to grow mybdides longer too and the back short. My hair is just so thin after having years of thick hair.

Mary...off you go tomorrow morning on your long awaited and well deserved trip. I sure hope you enjoy yourself and the warm weather. Relax and don’t worry about home things ...your son is there to be the caretaker. I think Jim will do fine.

Dianne I see my post made no sense. First I said the dogs were with me only for one night then I proceeded to describe the sleeping arrangements for both nights. Not sure where my head was at but obviously they spent two nights. It's good that I have a king size bed. My dog sleeps next to me and has her own pillow which she puts her head on. I guess it's a good thing that I have no love life. LOL

Here in California, when your car is over 10 years old, you have to have it checked out every other year to make sure it isn't emitting smog into the air. It's required in order to get it registered and my registration is due in mid May so I thought I'd go ahead and get it taken care of now. My car passed wit flying colors and the results are sent to the DMV electronically. Maybe they have that requirement in Colorado, too, but you are always leasing newer cars so never have to deal with it. My car is a 2005 Prius.
