Winter...fun or not?

by Shirley

Winter brings the anticipation of this for some...

and the fear of this for others.

It is amazing to me how one season can mean so many different things to so many different people. Winter is the season of snow and Christmas. The anticipation of that first snowfall and how beautiful it is. The first snow day from school or work. Putting lights up for the holidays and trying to out do the nieghbor's lights. Shopping for that perfect gift. Baking that perfect christamas cake or cookie. Skating on an outdoor pond or playing hockey at the local rink. Going skiing and sliding or even trying snowboarding. Just a simple walk in the woods on a bright, crisp winter day. So many things to enjoy for young and old.

However some of us hate this time of year. The stress of the holidays can be unbearable for some. With winter weather comes high heating bills. Family loss is particularly difficult during holidays. Icy sidewalks and driveways cause particular concerns for those of us afraid of falling. While some are watching Christmas classics on TV, others are glued to the weather channel looking for a break in the icy conditions just to go grocery shopping.

I use to like winter and hated summer. As I have grown older and more paranoid I now prefer summer over winter.

How about you?

SHIRLEY - Great blog!! I really don't mind winter. It's just after 100 + inches of snow last season, I'm not really looking forward to that mess this year!!

SCIRISH - Congrats on first!!

IBB - I bet you'll be so busy today.....have fun....NOT!!!

I hope everyone has a great Monday!!

Good Morning!

SHIRLEY: I actually like winter, but I have a totally different perspective because I live in Arizona. Our summers are so hot, that we can't wait for it to cool down. Winters are also very mild here..the temperatures rarely get down to freezing. I know when my friends that live in cold climates tell me about snow, ice and freezing temps..I worry about them, so I can understand how you feel.

Anyone that wants to escape the cold and snow...I have two extra rooms!

Just trying on a holiday outfit!!!

I figured if I couldn't escape the snow....maybe I should embrace it!!!

ITEACH - Have you finished Breaking Dawn yet? I finished it yesterday....OMG, OMG, OMG!!! I cried it was so good!!!

I just started reading The Secret Life of Bees this morning. Has anyone else read this?

Just got back from taking the kids to school....time for another cup of coffee and to put another log on the fire!! It's crazy windy outside this morning....not looking forward to going out and shoveling the driveway. Thankfully I have wonderful neighbors that have blown the sidewalk for me!!

Zona said...

SCIRISH: Congrats on FIRST!

IBB: I'm not a fan of mountain driving in summer or winter..and I'm the passenger!

JODI: If you get 100+ inches of snow..I'm sending you a ticket! ;)

SHIRLEY: Wonderfully written blog..thank you!!

Zona said...

JODI: YAY for the sidewalk blowing neighbors!! ;)

Love your avatar!! Embrace the snow..LOL!!

Zona...Your winter weather sounds divine, but I don't think I could take the summer there. Although I have heard the heat is different in AZ (I guess because the humidity is lower?) it still sounds way tooo hot!

We had sleet and snow yesterday, but it is all gone this morning. I am sooo not ready for this...

Jodi said...

SCIRISH - We got 2 inches yesterday, and another 3-6 forcasted for Wednesday. I guess it's here to stay. :(

ZONA - I'll hold you to that!!!

JODI: You got it!! :)

IBB: It's in the 70's in the daytime..50's at night.

G'morning, Shirley!!~~Can we choose Spring/Autumn over either Summer or Winter?

We had a really mild Summer this year so it wasn't bad. Winters are usually mild, too, but entirely too many gray days for my S.A.D...and we are more likely to have a white Valentine's Day than a white Christmas. That's just WRONG!

Snow, for me, is like an eagerly anticipated houseguest. You prepare for it and can't wait for it to arrive. The first day is all beauty and excitement. The second day is cozy and relaxed. The third day, you just want it to move on already!

Happy CyberMonday All!!! (cont'd)

I just got caught up on yesterday's comments...We had a houseful yesterday...Most of them unexpected, it was fun, but I am enjoying the quiet this morning. My house is a wreck and I should be straightening, but it will be there later.

Jodi said...

SCIRISH - You are so right....I should be folding socks and undies!!!

scirish said...

Zona....I get wicked Migraines also and take Imitrex for them, which is VERY expensive. I was out of it when I got my last one (while in the process of switching Doctors) and my SO gave me two cayenne pepper capsules (the "cool" kind) and they worked!!! I was freakin AMAZED!

scirish said...

Jodi...arrrgg....I don't want to even look in the laundry basket

Bon'O said...

Aahhh, coffee.....time to cybershop! IBB~~I'm doing my part...won't bring you ANY packages today! It's all about Amazon.com for me. I've had such good experiences with them in the past, and was pleased last year when I bought the FlipVideo and they immediately refunded my account when they lowered the price two weeks later. (They wrap beautifully, too...and free-shipping!)

Scirish...#1. Shirley, what's the score?

Jodi~~You need to post some snow pics for us...including you sitting on on Frosty's lap! You might want to slip on some leggings first, though. You still have some from the 80's, right?

Zona~~Please send guestroom specs, so I can select one for.......how 'bout early May?

Zona said...

SCIRISH: Cayenne pepper?? I've never heard of that..but I'm willing to try it! Thank you!! :)

Thanks also to JODI, DIANNE, IBB and VIG for your concern last night. I'm much better..just a bit dizzy.

Morning Glories!

Scrishy is back and got first!

Shirley yep the love hate winter affair at my house. Love the clothing for winter. Love the first snow and really here we rarely get days and days of snow more like two or three day and then the rain comes and it melts.

What I dread now is the winter wind storms we have been getting for about the last 5 years. They are wicked! Year before last the wind took so many trees down in our area we were without power for 4 days. Used to be that when the power went out it was kind of fun. Reading by lamplight, the quiet with no TV or other electronic white noise in the back ground etc... but after 4 days of no showers, unable to flush toilets (as we have a well for our water and has an electric pump)no heat etc... You start to get very pissed off and cranky and it is no longer fun. I am no even counting the damage it has done to our roof in the past.

So yes lately winter because one big worry!

Jodi loved the Secret life of Bees! Great book!

Good morning Ibb,Zona and Bono!

Good Morning Hooters!

Scrishy, what can I say- congrats on 1st for today and forever..LOL :)

Shirley, I hate winter. I love about one day of it when the lights are lit, the snow is pretty and thats it. The picture of the leg in a cast? Been there done that on the ice!!!!! But truth be told I did it in the summer once too- :)

I think part of it is the lack of sunlight. I think that makes things tougher emotionally for a lot of people. I detest going home from work in the dark at 4:30 in the afternoon. Oh, and driving in this crap? Yikes.

Jodi- great blog yesterday by the way!!!!!!!! I was not on - busy doing other stuff. Thanks for the coffee and glazers!!!!!

Hope everyone has a good day.

Good morning!

Congrats on first, Scirish! I've been away for a few days--did your procedure work? I know you said you had to wait to see if it did. I hope so!

Shirley, I so agree with you! I now prefer summer although winters here are much milder than what I'm used to so they aren't so bad. It's funny how your body changes though--what felt mild in MD (50's) feels cold to me now! LOL

And, I'm always afraid of falling, too! I'm not that old yet but I have a thing about that! I'm always telling my parents to watch their step, etc. I drive them crazy.

Jodi, I loved The Secret Life of Bees. I want to see the movie--not sure if it's out of the movie theater yet.

Happy December 1st. The rush is on. Whatever your weather is today I hope you are having a good day.

I finished decorating my bedroom yesterday. Today I am going to do the garland and lights in the hall, down the stairs and the tree with the red lights at the bottom. That is my plan, whether I get to it or not depends on my energy level after I have my morning English tea.

Bon'O - I agree with you completely. There is nothing like that first snow falling. It is so beautiful for a day. The next day you want to go somewhere and you wonder if it's safe. By the third day the novelty is over and we all would prefer the rain. Everyone is saying "At least you don't have to shovel it". A White Christmas is lovely but then no-one wants to travel in it. I guess we just don't get enough to become seasoned drivers in the snow.

I love every month except January. That month I could easily sleep right through like the bears do.

I will be back later. Have a great day everyone.

Whabbear - Thanks for the kind words in area 51.

VIG - I am so happy you can go to Mexico for Christmas. My thoughts will be with you as you get through the first Christmas without your dear brother.

Jodi....loved, loved, loved the Secret Life of Bees book and loved, loved, loved, loved the movie too! A few Christmases ago, someone else got it for Christmas, and I commandeered it and spent all of Boxing Day (day after Christmas!) reading it! So good! And the movie was one of the best ones I have seen in a very long time! But warning, if you are going to see it, take a whole box of kleenex!

Shirley...I live in the one part of Canada that gets very little snow (gets alot of rain though!)and is one of the reasons I live here. I think you get some really bad storms in Nova Scotia and a lot of snow, so I don't blame you for feeling about winter the way you do. At this point very early in the season, it seems to be a warmer winter this year on the west coast (I was out at a Christmas tree light up festival last night in capri pants and a running jacket...no toque, no mitts, no big old winter coat...unheard of!!!), how is it on the east coast so far?

Tink...I see you are up and about! Are you doing more decorating today?

Have a marvelous Monday everyone!

Tinkatia said...

It was my friend VIG who stepped on me. It wasn't my counting skills after all.

VIG - I didn't get to see the tree festival so you must tell me all about it. Yes, it is mild here at the moment. However, one never knows when a cold front may come down from the Arctic. If it does it only lasts a few days so that is one of the nice reasons for living here. I am decorating all day today.

I just Googled 'Bobolink', and the description is quite fitting, since I live in the grass (both kinds!) capital of the country and am kinda black underneath (reverse-enherited it, from my daughter)...
"A distinctive bird of open grasslands, the Bobolink is the only American bird that is black underneath and white on the back." :-)

Shucks, catching up at work with no time to read everyone's comments but wanted to comment on today's blog.

I've always loved wintery weather because I've never lived somewhere where I have to experience it in the long-term. In Austin & Dallas it might get icy around February but it only lasted a day or two at best and we got a paid holiday from work. What’s not to like about that?

Snow has always felt magical to me … as an adult vacationing in Tahoe in January or seeing a late season snowfall when we visited NYC in March/2004, as a child visiting my grandparents in NJ for Christmas or on one Christmas Eve when my dad was stationed at an air base in England.

Ask me again after we spend next winter in Oklahoma City and I may have a completely different answer for you.

Have a great day owl friends. I hope I get a chance to check in with you later in the day!

Good morning from Las Vegas!

Shirley. I used to hate winter until I retired. The 40 mile drive to work was very stressful for me. I worked nights and would have to scrape layers of ice & snow off my car before leaving. I had to get a hotel room a couple times because the stress was too much for me esp. the ice. I slid into a culvert once and landed upside down in icy water. I was hanging by my seat belt.
Now if the weather is bad I just stay put! I drive a jeep, but still am very cautious.

Whabbear it was 70 here in Vegas yesterday. today should be the same. LOVE IT!!

I prefer summer mostly because I can get out more, garden, swim, ride my bike, walk my dogs without fighting them to put booties on their stupid feet. LOL!

Congrats on 1st Scirish!

Good morning/afternoon to IBB, Jodi, Zona, Bon'O, Lynn D, Goldie, Mek, Sandie, Tinka, VIG, Whabbear, No Newz, Outatuune and Mary.

When I had a car I didn't really mind driving in snow. During snow storms I would purposely go out to see how hard it was to drive around. There are two hills in my town that I knew if I could get up them in a storm I was OK. I always knew how to handle my car, but it was the other idiots on the road that sometimes made me nervous.

I remember driving my sister back to university one day in a storm (two hour drive each way under normal conditions) and on the way back the only way I could tell which side of the road I was on is if I met another car. If they were coming directly at me I knew I was on the wrong side of the road. It took me about four hours to get home that day.

My sisters and I went cross country skiing one time . I was sore for a week after, but it was a really nice afternoon. Cold, but bright and sunny. That was probably 20 years ago or so. I guess I didn't always hate winter.

My fear of falling my stem from the fact the when we were young and Dad took us to an outdoor pond in the woods to skate on my older brother and sister would push me out onto the ice first to make sure it was safe. I was scared I would fall through, but I never did.

Thank you everyone for your comments on my blog today. I may put a light or two up yet before Christmas.

Hey hooters!

Happy Monday!

Congrats once again to Scirish, you and Lynn are very close (I am impressed at the exact count, Shirley!)

I don't get up early enough to be in the competition!

Shirley, great blog. I mostly don't like winter because I feel like a slug. Too cold to do anything, so easier to stay in and snack and be lazy.

We don't get snow here, but it does get very cold, even freezing. We normally get lots of rain, and I hate driving in it.

The things about winter I do like are making soups and things in the crock pot, using the fireplace, and down comforters on the bed!

My favorite is spring/summer, when it's warm enough to swim, yet not blistering hot. We don't get the heat like our Arizona owls, but it is not uncommon for upper 90s-low 100s here.

Zona, hope your headache is better. The cayenne pepper idea sounds good, let us know if it worked for you!

VIG, the beach in Mexico over the holiday sounds AMAZING! Can you picture just laying back in a beach chair, an umbrella over you, some good music, and bar service?

GOOD MORNING/AFTERNOON TO ALL PRESENT AND FUTURE.

I am sitting here weather-less in Pacifica! Growing up in SF I didn't even know there were 4 seasons until I heard Vivaldi's composition of the 4 Seasons. :) We had a lot of fog at the coast during the summer and that used to depress me. Winter gets a little colder, but no snow and not even very much rain. I love the rain and I am so envious when any of my OWLFRIENDS talk about all the rain they are having. I do have to add that my heart breaks for anyone who experienced any of the flooding this year. It was horrible beyond belief. We have had days lately that feel like summer, and that is so wrong.
This time of year is a very sentimental time, as I remember back when my parents and grandparents were here. I think I may have said before that it brings a smile and a tear. To my OWLFRIENDS who have lost some one so recently, my heart is with you. And, for any who might be depressed know that I will hold a little of it in my heart for you.

Lani said...

Well, I just realized it isn't even still morning on the west coast.

Thank you SHIRLEY for your post this morning.

HODI, We know you will EMBRACE just about any one or anything, but must you display it in public? :) And now you even have the neighbors blowing! And, out side in public!

I need to start taking notes as I am reading comments, as by the time I finish I can't remember who said what or who has the headache etc. Then I am afraid I will leave someone out.
ZONA, LYNN &SCIRISH, I hope you all feel better. If I left someone out I am sorry.

Hi...Well, I love the winter and fall. My most favorite months are from September until January. I like winter more now that I don't have to drive in it every day. I really love the fall the most but I don't care for heat so winter is my second best. Good blog SHIRLEY and so true about both sides of the coin on the weather. Do you get a lot of snow there where you live? Our snow doesn't usually last on the streets that long. It is in the mountains mostly. We had a lot of snow on Saturday and Sunday but today it is 50 with sunshine and dry streets. We have our days but not too bad.

SCIRISH: What did your doctor have to say today? I wish they could find something to help you feel better.

LYNND: How the heck did you get hives? Do you know what caused them? Feel better.....

Very impressive list SHIRLEY. I guess I will need to go to bed early to beat some of those early bird owls!

BONO: I am going to go on Amazon and try it out. I spent an awful lot of time online last night and not ordering anything. It was a big waste of time.

I went to lunch with a couple of friends today and now came by my daughter's house to drop off a couple of things and see the girls. I needed a couple of granddaughter fixes!

Shirley(NCC-1701) said...

For some of you that have asked, here in Nova Scotia the snowfall amount can vary drasticly. Yarmouth (which is an hour away to the west) can have a bad storm and Liverpool (which is about 45 minutes away to the east) can have a bad storm and all we get here is a light dusting. That happened a couple times last winter.

What bothers me the most is black ice. Any wet spot on the pavement could be a potential ice patch. That's why I'm always checking the temperature. If it's hovering around freezing I stay put if I can. I would much rather walk on snow than ice.

The storm we had last week gave us about 20cm (9 inches) but it's all gone now. It was 13C (55F) here today but it rained.

LynnD, yes Saxby is really bad news. I don't believe his elevator goes to the top floor.

Sarah Palin was in Augusta today. Needless to say I just couldn't find the time to see her. ;)

Yes, hubby and I will be voting, even though I am so sick of the smear campaigns both candidates have been constantly running.

SHIRLEY...great blog. My perspective on winter has drastically changed over the years. I don't really care for it! I do like not sweating my face off, but to then freeze my ass off isn't fun either! I am deathly afraid of falling. Before, if I fell, then I laughed and got up. Now I fear, with my back problems if I fall I will never be able to get up...or walk. I also fear driving, but have no choice, so I do it, but I panic if anyone is too close behind me. The fear of getting rear ended is huge. Since my financial situation changed, I don't much like the holidays either.

I guess I vote or fall and spring!

LYNN...hope you are feeling better.

I don't like the winter at all, actually I hate it. With the winter comes winter gloom, and snow, yuck! It just seems my body craves the sun.

I am much more happier in the spring/summer...

Thanks for your blog today, and loved the pictures who used...

Perfect...

Good evening Owls.

I have been busy today running errands and ♪♪DECORATING♪♪ It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas♪♪♥

Shirley, I don't hate winter, but I prefer fall or spring. Since I have lived in Sac, it has only snowed once and everyone freaked. We actually got about 3 inches of snow and it lasted about 24 hours. However, we are only about 90 minutes from Tahoe, which is great for skiing in the winter. So it is nice that if we want snow we can go to it, but then leave it, too.

sacBarb said...

Scirish, congrats on #1, again. I hope the doc can find a way to ease your pain.

Jodi, Good for you for embracing the snow-man.

LynnD, Are your hives the cause of your eye swelling?

MEK & Zona, We don't really have seasons either. And we do get HOT in the summer but not for long periods of time like in AZ.

Waving a wing to all the other Owls. I need to finish decorating. BBL

So now I have my Christmas cards, but what am I doing? Looking at Nova Scotia in my atlas. I will look up more on the Internet. SHIRLEY, can you see the US from your house? :)

I have only been in heavy snow one time. I missed seeing the earth under my feet. When we came down off the mountain and into Auburn it was so wonderful to see the beautiful red earth.

Great blog. I enjoy the Holiday season and try to keep in mind that it is a religious Holiday and to keep it all in perspective. I don't care for winter or summer. I prefer spring and fall.
Shirley what about an electric blanket to wrap up in. I keep an electric blanket on my bed and an electric throw on the sofa and stay bundled up under them to keep the chill off. I also using a heating pad for my feet and I drink lots of hot tea and hot chocolate. When I was living in Germany the cold weather never got to me. One summer it was 45 degrees over there and we wore coats. The skies seemed to be gray much of the time. I don't think I could deal with it now.
Have a great evening everyone!
EBJ ...
give Paula & Poe a kiss and a cracker from me and Cinnamon!

IBB~~Thanks for the reminder! I checked earlier, but it was too foggy. Isn't the next time going to be 2050-something?

EBJ~~It's NEVER too late to lunch with a blog-buddy. Come on up! Sounds like I'm s.o.l. on the apple crisp, though....bummer. I knew I should have copied that recipe.

Jodi~~Maybe you could copy/paste it to our old recipe-sharing blog(4/25)?

Dreama it isn't the cold that I mind. I sleep with a fan on me all year round. I mind the ice and slippery conditions. It's beautiful to look at, I just don't want to be in it.

Dianne~~Also forgot to ask you if you found any Amazon deals today. I spent a good portion of the afternoon there, and was quite disappointed. I did get a couple things, but I think Amazon may be going the way of greedy eBay. SAD.

Shirley~~Here I thought that was the moon in your adorable avatar. It's actually you throwing a snowball at us?

Shirley, I was thinking more along the lines of using electric blankets to cut down on the high energy bills. That was the only idea I could think of while I'm busy multi tasking. In Germany we had space heaters in each room so when we weren't using a room we could just turn particular ones off.
I fell and busted my ass so I bought those griped sole boots.
You're right. It is beautiful to look at as you mentioned but the ice is another story.
Good night. It's way past my bedtime!

SLANI & BON*BON - I emailed the recipe to you both on ms. I also took BON*BON'S advice and posted the recipe on the 4/25 blog.

EAST BAY J - Glad you liked the apple crisp!!!

I hope everyone has a great Tuesday. Off to go get prettied up for work!!

Sorry Dreama I misunderstood your post. That is a good idea to help with heating costs. Fortunately my heat is included in my rent, but my mum uses propane. One bill last winter was over $800.00. We have tried to convince her to use an electric blanket but she has herself convinced she will electricute herself. I told her that unless she uses it in the bathtub that isn't going to happen. She still isn't convinced.
