Eggnog

by Shirley
The word itself does not have much appeal, the guttural sound and the thought of drinking egg doesn't sound very appetizing to most.  There are differing opinions as to the origin of the name for this famous drink.  One version says that nog derives form an Old English word for strong beer, hence "noggin".  Another version attributes the name to Colonial America where colonists referred to thick drinks as "grog" and eggnog as "egg-and-grog".  Either way, we know it today as Eggnog.

It is believed that the eggnog tradition began in Europe as an adaptation of the various milk and wine punches often served at social gatherings.  In the 17th century, eggnog was used as a toast to one's health and was consumed by the well-to-do of society as milk and eggs were scarce commodities in Europe.

When the brew was brought to the "New World," colonists added a new twist, rum.  The rum Americans could get from the Caribbean was considerably less expensive than the other liquors shipped from England.  And so, along with the readily available supply of milk and eggs in the colonies, the rum version quickly became a popular drink for people of all classes.

As a rich, spicy and (oh yes) alcoholic drink, eggnog soon became a familiar item during the holiday season across the growing nations.  Each region would adapt the drink to their personal tastes.  Even George Washington devised his own version of the brew which only the most courageous would partake using rye whiskey, rum and sherry.

In the south, Southern taste replaced rum with bourbon.  And when the brew reached Latin America even more adaptations were made; in Puerto Rico, coconut juice or milk was added, in Mexico eggnog became a harder liqueur to be sipped with the addition of Mexican cinnamon and rum or grain alcohol, and in Peru it was made with the Peruvian pomace brandy called pisco.

The basic recipe for eggnog has not changed of the years (eggs beaten with sugar, mile, cream and some kind of spirit) and remains a favorite for holiday parties.  Whatever the variation of the popular holiday drink, it is sure to be a winner with most of your holiday guests.  however, for those who wish to go "nogless," there are other warm spirited drinks that are sure to be a hit as well and lift everyone's holiday spirits.

So, do you serve eggnog at your Christmas parties?  Do you like eggnog?  Do you spike your eggnog?  Do you make your own or do you buy it?

Morning glories,

Shirley we buy it and I don't drink it. I think it tastes vile. :)

Here is an update on baby Eva. I am heading out again today and will be gone most of it. I did post two pictures of Eva on FB.

Thank you everyone for your thoughts and prayers. EBJ I hope everything works out for you goddaughter and Deedee I am sorry for your loss. :(

I was gone all day yesterday. They released my daughter from Capital medical so she could go to Mary Bridge to be with Eva.

They did not do a C-section they actually cut up her abdomen to get Eva out quickly because of the distress they were reading on the monitor. So Leah is in rough shape right now to.

They aren't yet sure what is causing the seizures but since they put in the breathing tube and upped the seizure meds she is stable right now. They are being very careful about over stimulation as it seems to trigger an episode. Friday they are doing an MRI on on brain to check for any permanent brain damage.

They will also have to experiment, like take out her breathing tube to see if that sets off a seizure, lower her meds etc.... to try to find out what works and what doesn't.

The neurologist says that some of her symptoms are common with a traumatic birth and is reassuring that she will continue to get better but will have to take meds for a while.

We hope to know more after the MRI.

Heading out later today to take my daughter some clothing. They do have a facility called the tree house that has set up a room for her and Eva's Dad. Ritchie can stay there to but I think that would be to much for my daughter right now so we are taking care of him. I am taking him up with me today to see Mom and Dad and his new sister.

SHIRLEY - I was never a fan of eggnog, but as I've gotten older, I do enjoy a small glass. We sell it every year during the holidays....and always sell out!! I am a fan, however, of Tom n' Jerry's!! Its a frozen eggnog mix that you and a shot of rum, brandy and hot water to. I like to sprinkle nutmeg over it....mmmmm!!! Goes down sooooo good!!

LYNN - Continued healing thoughts and prayers for baby Eva ♥ I saw the pics of fb....what a little beauty!! I think you're smart to take care of Ritchie...I'm sure your daughter has enough to focus on right now. Love to you all ♥

Love, indeed! Lynn D, you freaked me out when I read that they were doing an MRI to check for permanent brain damage! All the best to you and everybody involved here... this is really heavy.

Shirley: I love Egg Nog, and we did serve it at my Christmas Party. But the big hit for me this year has been mulled wine! People scarfed it up, and I made it for the first time at my sister's annual family get-together at her place in Toronto... and it was a big hit there too!

Shirley, I do like it but I get the lower fat kind and I haven't had any this year. I only like to have a little and I like watching my weight more...ha ha. That stuff is RICH.

LynnD, I'm sorry you're going through this trial with your family, but if I were your daughter, I'd be quite thankful you were around.

Eggnog. Eggnog, rum and nutmeg. Am I the only one who knows nutmeg is a drug? Yep, you can get high on nutmeg. Give it a whirl. Let me know how you all do.

Whab, sorry you're under the weather. Have some eggnog. With lots of nutmeg.

Hiya, Jodi!!

Lynn...I was just commenting on that accident....I didn't know them...

Just commenting on how hard it is to understand why children suffer...it just seems so wrong....

DeeDee, those shoes!! I've a friend... French. He does sound for movies. It was a scene with Brazilian dancing. Now I don't know Brazilian dancing, but the two French guys did. So on with the stilettos and over to the sound stage they went.

There's nothing like two "distinguished" French guys dancing in stilettos on a stage together.

Mr Z got a mountain bike as part of a 12 Days of Christmas thing at work. Of all the prizes he could have won, he got a bike..lol! Not being a bike rider, he asked me what he should do with it. I told him to bring it home..I could try it out..he just laughed and laughed. When he realized I wasn't laughing he said "Seriously?" Well no..not after you almost pulled a muscle laughing about it!! I think he's going to ask his boss about re-gifting it to someone in his dept. by picking another name out of a box. That's probably the best idea for everyone..I mean, me on a bike..lol..

JODI: Dang..I wish he'd won a Segway! ;)

Evening everyone!! I had to pull out the hasmat suit again cause there are too many sick people here. Not the mentally sick ones, (cause a hasmat suit won't help me against them), the physically sick people. I hope you all get better soon...this suit is hot as hell! Not something a fat woman with pre-menopause should be wearing! ijs.

I'm surprised with you guys. I thought more of you would like eggnog. I like making it myself, but I don't put alcohol in it. For me the thought of milk and alcohol together is just gross! YUK!!!

Tina have a nice visit with the in-laws!

DeeDee again with the shoes! Is this what you drink your eggnog out of? Did you see pictures of the $11 million christmas tree that was decorated with diamonds and jewels? When I saw it I pictured you having something similar!

DeeDee said...

yes Shirley I saw the tree and no I do not drink out of shoes!!

I want to know more about these "mentally ill" people that your hazmat suit doesn't protect you from!

and that 40 ft tree!! I don't involve myself in vulgar displays of wealth!

Shirley(NCC-1701) said...

DeeDee did you misplace your 24K gold glasses or are they just for counting your money?

Shirley(NCC-1701) said...

As far as the mentally sick people go...well...lets just say they know who you...I mean they are!
