Happy Mothers Day!

Flowers for all of our Mother's

♥Patricia♥

My Mother

by Joey

Happy Mother's Day to everyone! I'd like to start off by saying that I hope everyone shows their Mother some love today and every day because they are a precious gift. Let me tell you about my Mother.

My Mom, Patricia, who we called "Mama" growing up, was born in 1950 in North Carolina. She had one sister and one brother. Her parents, my Meemaw and Papa, ran the local A & P grocery store.

My mom grew up and always worked hard. As a teenager she worked in the tobacco fields in the hot, humid air of North Carolina. She also worked at the local movie theatre where she got to enjoy that weeks' feature before the public had the chance to see it. Of course she worked at the grocery store my grandparents ran also.

She grew up and met my father, Harold. They began dating and got married, and soon thereafter, I was born. I was the first child and am the oldest of four boys. I was spoiled by my parents and grandparents, because I was the first grandchild on both sides of my family. My Dad was a mechanic. They divorced when I was ten and I always helped my Mom out with my brothers.

My Mama always worked hard and took care of my brothers and I. She was a very funny person and full of life. She always knew how to make you smile. She also played piano by ear, a gift that my little brother also inherited. She also loved to cook. Mama could whip up some of the best meals you ever put in your mouth. Maybe that's where the saying "It's so good, it'll make you slap your mama!" came from. lol

Mama loved to sing also. She sang in the church choir and eventually got me involved. Poetry was also a huge part of her life. I wished I was able to quickly get my hands on some poetry she wrote because I'd share it with you all. Maybe I'll do that for another day. She had an extraordinary gift.

I'll tell you a funny story. When my brothers and I were younger, we had a tape recorder(Yes, I dated myself, but I'm sure you all had one) or cassette recorder, whatever you'd like to call it. Well, we used to go around recording random stuff, joking, and just having fun with it. We would always try to 'sneak' and record her doing or saying something funny, but she wouldn't fall for it. She always knew we secretly had the recorder near her. She'd keep saying in a stern voice, "stop recording me!" lol

I had some of these recordings for years, even as an adult, and I ended up losing them. I'd give anything to have those back now. My Mama was a very strong person. She lived with leukemia for nine long years when the doctor only told her she would live two. She was a fighter and I grew strength in that as I got older.

As she got older, and got remarried, she was a stay at home mom. She cooked, cleaned and worked really hard to keep us four boys from destroying our home. lol
She made us do chores and do our part, and at the time, I'd say to her when she'd demand the dishes be washed, "Not now Mama". I only realized as I got older and raised my brothers why she meant she wanted them done RIGHT then and THERE. I am a lot like her today. lol

I learned many things from Mama. One was how to make gravy and cook in general. As a child, I wanted this play "cooking set" out of the S& H Greenbax catalog(remember those?), and she got it for me! I was so thrilled to get it. She started teaching me how to cook when I was nine years old. Another thing she taught me was how to shop and be frugal which I still put into practice to this day.

Using coupons was never an issue for her. She loved using them and saving money. She could sniff out a bargain like Toucan Sam could froot loops. lol

I rarely saw my Mama angry. She had to deal with unpleasant situations just as any Mother would, but she always handled them with grace and dignity.

My Mama never judged me. She tried to get me to come "out" to her in so many words, but I never had the courage. It's true for the most part that Mother's always "know". Not being my true self to her is something I regret to this day, but I know she's looking down and is proud of what her four boys have become now as men.

Remember, love and cherish your mom while you have her. Make every moment count, as you never know when God may call her home........

Good morning and Happy Mother's Day to all the wonderful mother's who play here in the nest.

Congratulations birdee on 1st, and Happy Mother's Day.

Joey, what a lovey tribute to your mother. I know she is looking down on you and is so proud of her boys. Love to you.

Oh my goodness, Shirley, such a beautiful brunch. Thank you so much. You always share your heart in such a loving way.

The surprise birthday party last night for my daughter was a huge success and so much fun. So many people I haven't seen in years.

After I finish Shirley's wonderful brunch, I'm off to church with my two children and their families, then to my son and daughter-in-law's for another exciting brunch.

Happy Mother's Day!

Morning Glories!

Birdee (((Hugs))) Congrats on First!

Shirley the table is beautiful and the food is delicious! Thank you Oh and I am wearing my owl pendant along with the owl pin that Iteach and her class sent me today!

Joey: That was the most beautiful tribute to your Mom. I know she is is proud of you and your brothers. I have no doubt about this at all!

Now those of you I have on myspace I sent out bouquets yesterday. Some said Happy Mothers Day and Some said A Friends bouquet.

While I was sending those out I realized some of our owls did not have children. This started me thinking about Mothers day and what I realized for me Mothers day is a celebration of women!!

ALL of us in one way or another has helped raise someone or raise them up and really isn't that what we all do? Whether that is being there for nieces and nephews, for sisters and friends, brothers and strangers we have a hand in peoples lives.

At least that is how I feel about all of you!

So any owl I don't have on myspace a big bouquet of Daisy's to you too!

HUGS to you!

Shirley: Thanks for the brunch! (I also loved the mimosas)!!

Happy Mother's Day to all the Owls out there. (I believe being a fur mom counts too)!

Those who aren't mothers, I hope (like Joey said) that you remember your mothers today!

I should be # 10 (my favorite number)!

Good morning!

Joey your tribute to your mama was so touching. What a wonderful story to read first thing this morning.

Thank you so much for sharing your beloved mama with us.

My mom and dad are on the road, they are driving up to Idaho to attend a reunion. I will call her later to wish her a happy mommy's day.

Shirley your brunch is awesome. You are so creative!

I am working today, so will check in later.

I continue to have major problems with Myspace. Does anyone have a guess as to why when I sign in, it foads me off and also shuts down my internet connection?

My huz was on his laptop the night before last when I signed in, and it shut his connection down, too.

It is sooo frustrating! And it only seems to happen when I am on Myspace.

I would appreciate any advice or suggestions!

Happy Mother's Day to all!

Joey - I just read your blog and I can see why you turned out to be such a warm, caring man. Your mother did a great job. I know she is proud of what she accomplished. By the way she is beautiful.

Shirley - Thank you for the beautiful brunch. As always you are a sweetheart.

Lynn - Thank you for the bouquets of flowers. I love them.

East Bay J - I am having the same trouble with myspace. It takes me 10 tries to log on. Then sometimes it kicks me off for no reason. I don't know if it is myspace or if my Safari can't support myspace. I am going to install Camino which is the P.C. equivalent of Moxilla Firefox. It is very frustrating.

I don't have much time to be on the computer today. I am leaving shortly to be with my mom. I am so happy I get to celebrate another year with her. She is in her 97th year so I know there won't be many more. I will be with her until lunch. I will have a short nap and then spend the rest of the day and evening with my children and grand children. I love Mother's Day. Have a good one. Remember your 'fur babies' as well today. They want to spend time with their "mommies" too.

Joey: Thank you for sharing your mom with us today! That was a beautiful tribute to her love and the many ways she blessed your life.

I'm in a bit of rush this morning, but I wanted to pop in quickly to share a beautiful song that always brings tears to my eyes.

It's a heart touching tribute to all moms, especially those who are no longer with us or those who we don't get to see as often as we wish we could.

Thanks again, Mom!

What a beautiful Blog and Tribute to your wonderful, precious Mother, Joey!

I was very touched by everything you wrote, and I could tell by the tender way you speak of her, how much love she gave to you and your brothers, and how much influence she had on you, personally, to become the caring, loving young man you are today. Much love to you today too!

And Shirley, I concur with SacBarb, you should pursue party planning as a career! You always set the most lovely, beautiful table, and if it is a Fiesta, it is a fun-filled table! You are a very talented woman. And the menu sounds delicious. I can't wait to fill my plate!

Miss Laurie is finally getting over her stomach virus. She ate some solid food yesterday, some mashed potatoes, and applesauce and small bites of white meat chicken. I was very proud of her! She wouldn't even look at crackers for almost 4 days!

I hope all of you have a beautiful Mother's Day. If you are alone, do something wonderful for yourself. A Bubble Bath, a nice walk in the sunshine, watch a favorite movie, order in some food. You are all in my thoughts today, and I wish each and every one of you a perfect day.

Peace and Love to All, DonnaJean

My sister and I are meeting at our parents house early afternoon to surprise our Mother with a fancy day. We have all kinds of goodies in store for her. My Mom has short term memory problems due to mini strokes and perhaps due to Parkisnons Disease or the medication so she forgets this is her special day.
This evening my B/F is taking me out to dinner. I only have furkids but they still count. Last time B/F had the florist deliver a huge boquet of red Roses from my Pekingese.
Tonight I plan to do something special for my friend. She lost her husband at Christmas in a vehicle accident and this week she buried her Mom. I have a very special gift that is going to surprise her.
Happy Mothers Day everyone.

The apple doesn't fall from the tree, as they say...and you sure seemed to have proven that. Thank you for sharing that with us.

SHIRLEY...what a lovely brunch you made for us...and the decor is beautiful. I can actually picture it and taste the delectible goodies you lovingly prepared. Thank you...and I hope your day goes well.

LYNN...what a great way to think of today...as a tribute to women, whether we are moms or not. {{hugs}} to you, my dear friend.

CAROL...thanks for asking Joey to write today's bloggy. I hope you have a great brunch with Sarah and your family. I am glad your brother is going. I am sure it will mean a lot to Sarah.

DONNA JEAN...I'm sorry Miss Laurie Elizabeth has been having so much illness lately. I am glad she is on the mend. I hope you are taking care of yourself.

To all the other OWLs that posted already, I am so glad to see you and I hope your day was special.

I was supposed to go to the Indian's game and it was a special Susan G. Komen day. We were going to be part of a human pink ribbon. But it has been pouring here. They cancelled the ribbon, and then after we got soaked for about an hour, they called the game off. I was going to go to the cemetary and visit my mom, but it was just too wet to go. But I know she knows I love her.

Have a great day, and I will visit again later.

And sorry for the rain out!

Your mom knows, she sees you♥♥♥
and I am sure she saw the rain :O)

Glad to see you here on the nest, you are missed!

CAROL...you silly girl! It would have been my pleasure to help you out and post the blogs for you. You can't bug me that easily! I am so glad today went well. I will keep my fingers crossed that next weekend goes as well! But now for the really important question...what was for brunch? Was there pork??? LOL

ZONA and MEK...can we borrow about 10 degrees? Just for a few days!!

MARY...I love fresh handmade tortillas. Are they hard to make?

My mom had 5 siblings and they were raised Orthodox. On Saturdays, the family...except my mom...would be in Temple all morning. While they were gone, my mom would take the matzo balls from the soup! Being one of the younger siblings, this assured her she got her fair share! She also was a rebel and would light the stove and fry them! (on the Sabbath, you are not allowed to actually cook anything, so the soup would be simmering on the lowest flame from Friday before sundown!) I guess I get my rebellion from her!!

DIANNE...I hope you are feeling better and were able to go home today.

Mo,if you can make pizza dough you can make tortillas. It's just tedious rolling out each one. They must be cooked one at a time. I will post my Mom's recipe in myspace later.

*****SPECIAL UPDATE*****

DIANNE IS HOME!! She was released this afternoon. They sent her home with oxygen, a nebulizer and a "ton" of pills. She still has pneumonia and is discouraged by that. She has been sleeping or relaxing most of the day. Once again she thanks everyone for their well wishes.

LYNND: DIANNE didn't get any pain pills so if you have leftovers...?? ;)

DIANNE: YAY!!!! Now rest...SWAK!

MARY...Ummm, I never said I could MAKE pizza dough!! But I would love to try the tortillas sometime. Or you could just make them and invite me over! bwahahahaha

Good Evening Everyone. I spent a very nice day with my son and DIL and her parents.

MEK: My son washed my car and filled it up with gas too. Yes, it was a really nice gift.

On a side note speaking of car washing...We have a gross-ry store that gives coupons for gas...10 cents a gallon off if you spend $50 and 25 cents off, if you spend $100. I didn't know about this promotion until yesterday when I spent $99.91 and my receipt had the 10 cent coupon on it. It also had the requirements for the higher discount. I was really pissed that the cashier didn't mention it to me. I would have bought a pack of gum, or ANYTHING, to bring it to or over $100. arrrgggghhhhh. I was still pissed when I got to my son's and I think that's why he washed my car and filled it up...to shut me up. I should try that more often.

Carol: I'm glad things went well with your brother. Hope next weekend goes well also.

Zona: Did you forget that Frank was going to be on TCM again tonight? I think he is going to be on every Sunday this month.

Dianne: So glad that you are home and on the mend. Take very good care of yourself, missy.

I hope you all had a very good day.

Zona said...

MEK: Congrats on 100!

MO: I'm sure we could spare 25 degrees...;)

SACBARB: Totally forgot...as usual!

OMG - I just switched to House Hunters - the realtor's first name is MUFFY - I thought NO WAY!!! LOL

Since I didn't watch Survivor - I'm not sure about the "final vote" - but the bats flying around whereever they were would have FREAKED me out!!!!!!!

Zona - I agree - we could give up MORE than that even!! LOL

SacBarb - glad you have a clean car and a full tank!!
